5. Assessment of the Interaction between Pesticide Applications and Heavy Metals Content in Soils and Plants.

Abstract

Soil and plant contamination with pesticides and heavy metals have significant effects on human health. There may be an interaction effect (synergistic or antagonistic) between them that can increase the risk of their presence in certain amounts. A pot experiment was conducted using four pesticides (acetamiprid, emamectin benzoate, imidacloprid, and thiamethoxam) applied on Lew mallow (Chorcoruis olitorus) plants grown on contaminated and uncontaminated soils. Some heavy metals and pesticide residues were determined. Treating plants with different pesticides increased the soil content of pesticide residues, and the increases were much higher in previously contaminated soils compared with the uncontaminated ones. Soil content of pesticide residues in contaminated soil can be arranged in descending order as follows: acetamiprid > thiamethoxam > imidacloprid > emamectin benzoate with increases by 707, 373, 287, and 124%, respectively, compared to the control. The highest antagonism was found between Acetamiprid and soil Zn, Emamectin benzoate and soil Pb, Imidacloprid and Mn in soil and plant, Thiamethoxam and plant Zn. The highest synergistic relationships were found between Acetamiprid with Pb and Ni in plant, emamectin benzoate with Mn and Cd, in soil and plant’s Mn, imidacloprid and plant Zn, thiamethoxam and Pb in soil and Cd in plant. Abstract

This paper reports the first study of phyco-remediation of cyantraniliprole, a second-generation diamide insecticide with high toxicity and persistence in aquatic environments, using the green microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Cultures of C. reinhardtii were treated with four concentrations of cyantraniliprole (0, 25, 50, and 100 ppm). The removal efficiency, antioxidant responses, and biomass composition of the microalga were measured after 1 h and one week of exposures. C. reinhardtii was able to remove cyantraniliprole from the medium by biodegradation, biotransformation, bioaccumulation, and bio-adsorption mechanisms, achieving up to 87.0% removal within 1 h and 84.5% after one week. The microalga also maintained acceptable levels of enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidants, indicating its tolerance to cyantraniliprole stress. Moreover, some treated cultures (especially those with 25 and 50 ppm cyantraniliprole) showed enhanced specific growth rate, and biomass productivity compared to control cultures. In addition, those with 50 and 100 ppm cyantraniliprole showed enhanced carbohydrate and lipid concentrations compared to the control cultures. These results suggest that C. reinhardtii is a promising candidate for bioremediation of cyantraniliprole-contaminated water and biofuel production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is uncertain whether individualisation of the perioperative open-lung approach (OLA) to ventilation reduces postoperative pulmonary complications in patients undergoing lung resection. We compared a perioperative individualised OLA (iOLA) ventilation strategy with standard lung-protective ventilation in patients undergoing thoracic surgery with one-lung ventilation.

Abstract

The neonicotinoid insecticide sulfoxaflor is widely used in Egypt. This work assessed the safety of using sulfoxaflor in squash to consumers, along with the residue behaviour. Supervised field trials were conducted to investigate the dynamics and terminal residues of sulfoxaflor in squash under Egyptian field conditions for several agricultural practices, including worst-case scenarios. A QuEChERS-based protocol coupled with LC-MS/MS was employed to measure residues in squash fruits; the limit of quantitation was successfully validated at 0.01 mg/kg. Sulfoxaflor residues reduce in squash fruits via a first-order decay process, with a calculated half–life (t1/2) of 6.13 days and significant degradation (88.5%) after 14 days. During harvest, the terminal residues of sulfoxaflor were ranged from 0.365 to 1.611 mg/kg and from 0.576 to 1.865 mg/kg on sampling days of 3, 7 and 14 days when applied 2-3 times at single or double recommended dose, respectively. A consumer risk assessment was performed employing the FAO/WHO approach; the risk quotients (RQs) were ≤0.0102, and hence; no significant health risks associated with consumption of squash treated with sulfoxaflor were identified. 19. Effect of Stepwise Lung Recruitment Maneuver on Oxygenation, Lung Mechanics and Lung Injury Biomarkers During Lung Resection Surgery: A Prospective Randomized Controlled Single Blinded Study.

Abstract

One lung ventilation for lung resection surgery may affect oxygenation, impair lung mechanics and increase the incidence of acute lung injury. Lung recruitment maneuver may improve these conditions. This study was a prospective randomized controlled single blinded clinical trial. Forty patients scheduled for elective lung resection surgeries using one lung ventilation under general anaesthesia were randomly allocated into two groups. Control (C) group was subjected to conventional mechanical ventilation of tidal volume of 8 ml/kg and 5 ml/kg for total lung ventilation (TLV) and one lung ventilation (OLV), respectively, and PEEP of 5 cmH2O and (LR) group which was subjected to stepwise lung recruitment twice: The first lung recruitment (LR1) was performed after (OLV) to the dependent lung, while the second lung recruitment (LR2) was performed after resuming (TLV). Arterial blood gases, lung mechanics and serum tumor necrosis factor alpha were recorded at multiple time points during the study. The proposal and raw data were registered on PACTR as PACTR202001518687696. There was a significant decrease in PaO2/FIO2 during OLV baseline in comparison to TLV baseline (P = < 0.001*) in both groups. While, in LR group, there was a significant increase in PaO2/FIO2 and dynamic compliance during OLV-20 min after recruitment (P = <0.001*), during TLV-20 min after recruitment (P = < 0.001*) and during TLV-end (P = <0.001*). TNF-⍺ level was significantly higher in control group 1 h after surgery and 24 h postoperative. Stepwise lung recruitment maneuver improved oxygenation parameters and lung mechanics during lung resection surgery and decreased the expression of lung injury biomarkers. Abstract

The acephate-degrading microbes that are currently available are not optimal. In this study, Burkholderiasp. A11, an efficient degrader of acephate, presented an acephate-removal efficiency of 83.36% within 56 h (100 mg·L–1). The A11 strain has a broad substrate tolerance and presents a good removal effect in the concentration range 10–1600 mg·L–1. Six metabolites from the degradation of acephate were identified, among which the main products were methamidophos, acetamide, acetic acid, methanethiol, and dimethyl disulfide. The main degradation pathways involved include amide bond breaking and phosphate bond hydrolysis. Moreover, strain A11 successfully colonized and substantially accelerated acephate degradation in different soils, degrading over 90% of acephate (50–200 mg·kg–1) within 120 h. 16S rDNA sequencing results further confirmed that the strain A11 gradually occupied a dominant position in the soil microbial communities, causing slight changes in the diversity and composition of the indigenous soil microbial community structure.

24. Efficacy of the New Herbicide Clomazone Against Weeds in Potato (Solanum tuberosumL.), Its Effect On Quality and Its Residues in Tubers and Soil

Abstract

Weeds represent a main limiting factor in potato production. In this study, the efficacy of clomazone against broadleaf and grass weeds in potato was assessed. Its effect on yield and quality and its residues in tubers and soil were also determined. Two field experiments were conducted on potato cultivar “Spunta” in winter 2020 and 2021. Treatments comprised clomazone sprayed preemergence at 1152 g a.i ha−1, hand hoeing, and unweeded control. Clomazone showed an excellent performance against broadleaf and grass weeds compared to the unweeded and hoed plots. Foliar phytotoxicity symptoms were observed in the potato plants and appeared to negatively affect their growth during the two seasons. The herbicide increased the tuber yield and the sugar and starch contents compared with the untreated control, but to a lower extent than the hoeing treatment. The clomazone residues in soil and tubers were determined using HPLC-DAD. Data revealed that no detectable residues (< 0.01 mg.kg−1) of clomazone were found in either tubers or the soil at harvest time. The results suggest that clomazone is a potential alternative herbicide to metribuzin for the effective control of weeds in potato and could be integrated with manual hoeing as a useful tool. However, more research is needed on the safety and efficacy of clomazone under different conditions, in different situations, and in other potato varieties.

Abstract

Background: Cereal grains are an important for the nutrition of both humans and animals, and contribute to the nutrition cycle in different ways. Chemical contaminants are important to be monitored in food due to their direct effects on human health. Objective: This work aimed to monitor some of the hazardous chemical contaminants i.e., organochlorines (OCs), pyrethroids, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in wheat and barley grains of European origin during 2019. Method: Samples were collected consecutively during the season and the QuEChERS technique (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe) followed by GC-tandemmass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) analysis was used in the extraction and cleaning up for all analyzed compounds. The method was verified, and a recovery study was performed at two spiking levels: 0.01 and 0.05 mg/g. RSD(%), LOD, and LOQ were calculated. Recovery ranged from 78.70-104.00% for all compounds at both levels at RSD 2.16-11.76%. Fat, moisture, protein, and specific weight contents of both grains of all studied origins were also recorded. Results: Results revealed that all detected pesticides were lower than the estimated maximum residue limits (MRLs). Few congeners of PCBs and PAHs were detected in the most of origins with tiny amounts but no estimated MRLs for it in cereal grains to be compared. Conclusions: None of the analyzed OCs were detected except endosulfan-I which was detected in some wheat samples from Ukraine and Poland, and some barley samples from Latvia, but still lower than the MRL. Abstract

The objectives of this study were to determine the residues of chlorothalonil which was sprayed with a recommended dose on tomato, pepper, soil under and the nearest water source and to examine the decline and safety. Recovery for tomato and pepper fruits ranged from 88.27% to 108.01%, 79.81% and 102.57% for soil and nearest water source, respectively. Limit of detection and quantification were 0.01 and 0.05 mg kg−1 respectively.The field trial was carried out in El-Sharkia Governorate, Egypt. Samples were randomly collected at pre-harvest intervals (PHI) of 0 day (1 h), 1, 3, 7, 10, and 15 days, respectively. A gas chromatography micro-electron capture detector method was used to detect residue levels. The data showed that the initial deposits were 2.86, 4.01 mg/kg in tomato and pepper, 0.89, 1.43 mg/kg in soil under tomato and pepper, respectively. The half-lives were found to be 1.79 and 1.83 days for tomato and pepper, respectively, while they were 1.63 days and 2.28 days in soil under tomato and pepper, respectively. Abstract

Tomato is an economically important vegetable crop which is attacked heavily by insect pests leading to reduction of yield and quality of the fruits. Field experiments were carried out to investigate the dissipation of methomyl (a common insecticide) used mainly on tomato fruits. LC-MS/MS coupled with the QuEChERS method were used for the determination of methomyl. The results showed that the recovery using matrix-matched standards ranged from 87.8 to 101.3%, with relative standard deviation of 2.5 to 7.5%. Kinetics equation, Log R = log R0 - 0.434 Kt, was used to calculate the rate of degradation in tomato, soil and water. Residue half-life calculated using kinetic rate ranged from 1.95 to 1.63 days in tomato and soil, respectively. From the results it was concluded that tomato fruits can be safely harvested for consumption after 15 days of application based on estimated preharvest interval (PHI). 34. Toxicity of Fipronil and Emamectin Benzoate and Their Mixtures Against Cotton Leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis(Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) With Relation to GABA Content

Abstract

Fipronil and emamectin benzoate (EMB) are effective insecticides for controlling cotton leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis. Fipronil works by blocking gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA) gated chloride. In contrast, EMB is activating GABA transporters. The objectives of our study were to assess relative toxicity of the technical fipronil and EMB alone and in mixture against S. littoralis. In addition, the GABA content was simultaneously determined using HPLC. Technical fipronil and EMB and their mixtures were applied topically to the fourth-instar larvae, and their LD50values were estimated after 48 h. Results demonstrated that the LD50for EMB applied alone was 0.751 ng/larva which was much less than for fipronil 7.271 ng/larva. Each of the two insecticides alone showed a significant decrease in GABA content at LD10, LD25, and LD50doses, while their mixtures induced GABA levels. The highest potentiation was observed when both insecticides were in a mixture at the ratio of LD10:LD10which was associated with higher increase in GABA levels. Moreover, the weight of the alive larvae was less than that was in the untreated control. However, all mixtures exhibited potentiation effect, except for the mixture of fipronil at LD50with EMB at LD10, LD25, and LD50that had antagonistic effect correlated with the lowest decrease in GABA level. Results suggested that lower doses of both insecticides in a binary mixture had potentiation effect against S. littoralis. This mixture could be used in combination as field application for successful and effective control of S. littoralisand would also help in managing insecticide resistance.

Abstract

Thiophanate-methyl is an effective fungicide on several food crops. In the present study, dissipation of residue levels of thiophanate-methyl in apple and strawberry fruits under open field conditions were studied using high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD).The extraction and clean-up were conducted by QuEChERS method. The limit of quantitation and detection were 0.01 and 0.003 mg/kg, respectively. The results suggest that the thiophanatemethyl dissipation curves followed the first order kinetics and its half-life values were (1.01) and (1.26) days for apple and strawberry, respectively. The residues in apple and strawberry were below the codex maximum residue limit (MRL) (0.5 and 0.1 mg/kg) after 8 and 4 days of the application, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
