1. Two Bacterial Bioagents Boost Onion Response to Stromatinia cepivora and Promote Growth and Yield via Enhancing the Antioxidant Defense System and Auxin Production

Abstract

White rot, caused by Stromatinia cepivora (Anamorph: Sclerotium cepivorum Berk), is a serious soil-borne disease of the onion that restricts its cultivation and production worldwide. Herein, we isolated and characterized a plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium Stenotrophomonas maltophilia from healthy onion roots and an endophytic bacterium Serratia liquefaciens from healthy bean leaves. Both isolates showed strong fungistatic activity against S. cepivora using the dual culture and culture filtrate methods. This effect might be due to the presence of several volatile compounds, especially menthol in both culture filtrates as shown with a GC-MS analysis. Additionally, the root drench application of cell-free culture filtrates of S. maltophilia and S. liquefaciens significantly reduced the incidence and severity of white rot disease on treated onion plants, which was associated with the activation of both enzymatic (POX and PPO) and non-enzymatic (phenolics and flavonoids) antioxidant defense machineries of S. cepivora-infected onion plants. Moreover, the culture filtrates of both bacterial bioagents remarkably enhanced the growth (as expressed by root length, plant height, and number of leaves) and yield parameters (as indicated by bulb circumference, fresh weight of the bulb, and bulb yield per plot) of treated onion plants under field conditions during two successive seasons (2020/2021 and 2021/2022). This might be because of a reduced disease severity and/or the accumulation of the main auxin, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), and its precursor, the amino acid tryptophan. Our findings suggest that both bioagents might be utilized as eco-friendly alternative control measures to reduce the utilization of chemical fungicides entirely or partially for the safer production of onion in S. cepivora-infested soils.

Abstract

This work is a study to evaluate the effect of some botanicals-based food mixtures added to sucrose syrup and offered to honeybee colonies on the development of Varroa infestation, brood rearing activity and clover honey yield during 2016/2017. The experiments were performed in the apiary of Faculty of Agriculture, Zagazig University. Summarized results are as follow: The rate of Varroa infestation increased gradually during summer season until recording the highest value in November. The food mixture composed of lemon juice + garlic extract reduced significantly the rate of Varroa infestation as compared to the control in all s.easons of the year by 37.02-55.40%. The mixtures composed of parnove extract + orange juice and thyme extract + orange juice reduced significantly the rate of Varroa infestation during the period extended from February to August, recording the range of 35.82 - 45.47 and 34.78-48. 13% reduction, respectively. The highest brood area (inch2 ) was recorded during summer season followed closely by that of spring season, whereas the least activity was noticed in autumn season. The food mixture composed of lemon juice + garlic extract induced the highest brood rearing activity in all seasons of the year. The mixture of pamove extract + orange juice came in the second class. On the other hand, the mixture composed of thyme extract+ orange juice showed the least brood rearing activity, being lower than the control. The mean clover honey yield recorded 5.00, 1.70, 6.50 and 4.00 kg/colony in 2016; 3.90, 2.00, 5.60 and 1.50 kg/colony in 2017 which offered the additive mixtures of pamove extract + orange juice, thyme extract + orange juice, lemon juice + garlic extract and sucrose syrup (control), respectively. Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate effect of different level of probiotic supplementation to ruminant rations, using in-vitro batch culture technique to determine degradation and fermentation parameters. In vitro experimental ration was formulated, the ration consisted of 40% alfalfa hay and 60% concentrate feed mixture. Three level of probiotic supplementation (106, 108, 1010 cfu/kg DM) were evaluated. DM and total gas production as well as fermentation parameters of the incubated samples were determined after 24 hrs. of fermentation. Slightly increases (P>0.05) in in-vitro dry matter degradability were observed for the ration supplemented with probiotics bacteria at different levels (106,108 and 1010 cfu/ kg DM) compared to control ration. Probiotics bacteria supplementation with different level (106,108 and 1010 cfu/ kg DM) led to significant (P<0.001) increases in organic matter degradability and total gas production per sample and per g DM, OM, NDF and ADF compared to the not supplemented ration (control ration), and no significant differences were observed among the different levels of probiotics supplementation. Significant increase in total volatile fatty acid concentration after 24 hours' incubation period compared to the not supplemented ration. On the other hand, the treatment supplemented with probiotic recorded lower ammonia concentration compared to the control group. It could be concluded that, adding probiotics bacteria supplementation to experimental ration resulted increase DM and OM degradability and using dose 106 CFU/kg DM feed is sufficient to induce improvement in degradability and fermentation parameters. Abstract

Background - Pregnant women with a mechanical heart valve (MHV) are at a heightened risk of a thrombotic event, and their absolute need for adequate anticoagulation puts them at considerable risk of bleeding and, with some anticoagulants, fetotoxicity. Methods and Results - Within the prospective, observational, contemporary, worldwide Registry of Pregnancy and Cardiac disease (ROPAC), we describe the pregnancy outcome of 212 patients with an MHV. We compare them with 134 patients with a tissue heart valve and 2620 other patients without a prosthetic valve. Maternal mortality occurred in 1.4% of the patients with an MHV, in 1.5% of patients with a tissue heart valve (P=1.000), and in 0.2% of patients without a prosthetic valve (P=0.025). Mechanical valve thrombosis complicated pregnancy in 10 patients with an MHV (4.7%). In 5 of these patients, the valve thrombosis occurred in the first trimester, and all 5 patients had been switched to some form of heparin. Hemorrhagic events occurred in 23.1% of patients with an MHV, in 5.1% of patients with a tissue heart valve (P<0.001), and in 4.9% of patients without a prosthetic valve (P<0.001). Only 58% of the patients with an MHV had a pregnancy free of serious adverse events compared with 79% of patients with a tissue heart valve (P<0.001) and 78% of patients without a prosthetic valve (P<0.001). Vitamin K antagonist use in the first trimester compared with heparin was associated with a higher rate of miscarriage (28.6% versus 9.2%; P<0.001) and late fetal death (7.1% versus 0.7%; P=0.016). Conclusions - Women with an MHV have only a 58% chance of experiencing an uncomplicated pregnancy with a live birth. The markedly increased mortality and morbidity warrant extensive prepregnancy counseling and centralization of care.

9. Studies on the effects of aspartame on memory and oxidative stress in brain of mice.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The dipeptide aspartame (N-L-alpha-aspartyl-Lphenylalanine, 1-methyl ester; alpha-APM) is one of the most widely used artificial sweeteners. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of repeated administration of aspartame in the working memory version of Morris water maze test, on oxidative stress and brain monoamines in brain of mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Aspartame (0.625, 1.875 or 5.625 mg/kg) was administered once daily subcutaneously for 2 weeks and mice were examined four times a week for their ability to locate a submerged plate. Malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), nitric oxide levels (the concentrations of nitrite/nitrate) and glucose were determined in brain. RESULTS: Only at the highest dose of 5.625 mg/kg, did aspartame significantly impaired water maze performance. The mean time taken to find the escape platform (latency) over 2 weeks was significantly delayed by aspartame 5.625 mg/kg, compared with the saline-treated control group. Significant differences occurred only on the first trial to find the escape platform. Significant increase in brain MDA by 16.5% and nitric oxide by 16.2% and a decrease in GSH by 25.1% and glucose by 22.5% occurred after treatment with aspartame at 1.875 mg/kg. Aspartame administered at 5.625 mg/kg significantly increased brain MDA by 43.8%, nitric oxide by 18.6% and decreased GSH by 32.7% and glucose by 25.8%. Aspartame caused dose-dependent inhibition of brain serotonin, noradrenaline and dopamine. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest impaired memory performance and increased brain oxidative stress by repeated aspartame administration. The impaired memory performance is likely to involve increased oxidative stress as well as decreased brain glucose availability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

10. Impact of certain oil-seed cakes or powder in comparison with oxamyl or urea on Meloidogyne incognita infecting eggplant.

Abstract

A pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the influence of certain oil-seed cakes i.e. fennel, sesame, anise or plant dry seed powder of red pepper as soil amendments in comparison with oxamyl or urea on controlling Meloidogyne incognita infecting eggplant seedlings under greenhouse conditions at 27 ± 5°C. Results indicated that all tested materials significantly improved the growth of eggplant and suppressing the number of galls, females and egg masses of M. incognita as compared to nematode alone. Moreover, anise oil-cake gave the best growth of total plant fresh and dry shoot weights as percentage increase (160.8 and 64%) followed by sesame oil-cake (143.5 and 64%), respectively. However, the highest values of percentage reduction for number of galls (64.2%), females (58.5%) and egg masses (55.7%) on eggplant roots were achieved by sesame-oil-cake application, followed by anise-oil-cake treatment with values of 63.0, 59.6 and 51.1% for the same nematode criteria, respectively. Meanwhile, oxamyl or urea treatment showed remarkable reduction percentages for nematode parameters tested. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
