This paper investigates the influence of thermal pretreatment on kinetic parameters based on four kinetic models: Modified Gompertz, transference and logistic functions and first order equation. The kinetic modeling was applied on experimental results of previous study on producing methane from anaerobic digestion of Recycled Pulp and Paper Sludge (RPPS) under mesophilic conditions. We observed that the thermal pretreatment improve considerably improved the kinetic parameters mainly the methane production rate and the lag phase. Indeed, it can be noted that methane production rate μ increases significantly from a value of 4.72 to 16.27 Nml/h using logistic function for 1 g VS/L added load. Then the lag phase parameter λ has dramatically decreased from 5.46 to 1.04 h using logistic function for 1,5g VS/L added load. This means that the thermal pretreatment of RPPS accelerates the methane production process and saves time.

The aim of this research was to design a solar heated system to enhance the anaerobic digestion treatment at mesophilic condition for the UASB (Up flow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket) digester system, the solar energy absorbed by flat plate collectors was transferred to heat storage tanks, which continuously supplied an anaerobic reactor with water at a maximum temperature of 37°C. For this purpose, we have developed two models for a 70 l bio-digester coupled to a solar thermal system (low temperature) using the TRNSYS (Transient System Simulation) platform. The thermal performances and the dynamic behavior of the systems under the climatic conditions of the city of Kenitra-Morocco are studied and the two designs were compared between each other in order to optimize the systems which have an excellent thermal performance. Sludge from a Moroccan dairy industry, constitute a source of organic matter ranging between 74 to 95%. Assessment of methane production in batch reactor at 38°C in laboratory scale according to three dilutions showed promising results. The co-digestion gave 11 times more methane production for BS and 3 times for PCS given by the mixture M3 at dilution 4 compared to mono-digestion that gave respectively 5.6 and 20.79mlCH4STP/gVS in substrate without dilution. Significant synergy between BS, PW and LDP was observed. In contrast, PCS showed a low synergy with these co-substrates. The TS and VS abatement exceeds 83% and 86% respectively for M3. Vinasse, a byproduct of ethanol production from sugarcane, is a rich organic matter and poses environmental challenges due to its high pollutant content. Effective biomethane production from vinasse can mitigate its environmental impact by converting organic matter into a useful energy source while reducing its pollutant load. The biomethane production by anaerobic digestion (AD) process of the vinasse byproduct was examined on a laboratory scale. In this regard, several loads from 0.5 to 7 g VS/L were investigated to assess AD performance and methane production. This study investigated how two separate factors, namely the load and hydraulic retention time (HRT), affect both cumulative methane production (CMP) and methane yield (Y CH4 ). This investigation utilized a response surface methodology known as the central composite design (RSM-CCD). Statistical analysis of variance (ANOVA) was employed to evaluate the effectiveness of the model generated. Thus, the model's fit, Y CH4 has a maximum R 2 value of 0.9759. The results revealed an astounding level of agreement between the experimental data and the proposed model. The RSM results revealed maximum CMP and Y CH4 values of 409.82 ml and 178.95 ml/g VS respectively, obtained for optimum load values of 2.17 g VS/L and HRT of 15 h. The results emphasize the environmental and economic significance of AD, providing a sustainable waste management solution that helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and organic pollution. Additionally, it generates valuable biogas and biofertilizers, presenting economic opportunities through renewable energy production and resource recovery. Anaerobic digestion (AD) has the potential to catalyse the shift from a linear to a circular economy. However, effective treatment and management of both solid (DSF) and liquid (DLF) digestate fraction treatment and management require adopting sustainable technologies to recover valuable by-products like energy, biofuels, biochar, and nutrients. This study reviews state-of-the-art advanced technologies for DSF and DLF treatment and valorisation, using life cycle assessment (LCA) and techno-economic analysis (TEA) in integrated digestate management (IDM). Key findings highlight these technologies' potential in mitigating environmental impacts from digestate management, but there's a need to improve process efficiency, especially at larger scales. Future research should prioritize cost-effective and eco-friendly IDM technologies. This review emphasizes how LCA and TEA can guide decision-making and promote sustainable agricultural practices. Slaughterhouse waste (SHW) poses significant environmental challenges due to its complex composition. In response, a novel review exploration of anaerobic digestion (AD) as a means of valorising SHW within the context of the circular economy (CE) is presented. The physicochemical properties of individual SHW, representing key parameters for the correct management of the AD process, are scrutinized. These parameters are further connected with identifying suitable pretreatment methods to enhance biogas production. Subsequently, the review examines the diverse technologies employed in the AD of SHW, considering the complexities of mono- or co-digestion. Various AD systems are evaluated for their effectiveness in harnessing the substantial biogas production potential from SHW, encompassing key parameters, reactor configurations, and operational conditions that influence the AD process. Moreover, the review interestingly extends its scope to the recovery and management of digestate, the by-product of AD. Along with the digestate composition, strategies for various utilization of this by-product are discussed. Anaerobic co-digestion of residual cabbage and cauliflower mixed at a ratio 1:1 (w/w) was investigated in two continuously stirred tank reactors under mesophilic conditions to ensure stability and enhanced methane generation. The experiments, including start-up, inoculum acclimatisation and treatment of the waste mixture, were carried out over a 65-day period. The characterisation results showed that the residual mixture contained a high proportion of total Kjeldahl nitrogen (around 37 g N/kg dry weight). The maximum value of methanogenic yield potential was found to be 250 L STP /kg VS (volatile solid) added, at STP conditions (0°C, 1 atm), by loading organic substrate at a concentration of 1 g VS/L, while its biodegradability was 60%. However, instability of the biomethanisation process was observed after 17 days, which might be a consequence of the high concentration of nitrogen in the reactors. The evaluation of the kinetics of the valorisation process revealed that the waste mixture studied can easily be biodegraded through anaerobic co-digestion.

The anaerobic digestion (AD) has become an alternative source and an attractive treatment method. Up-flow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) digester has been designed to treat the Recycled paper mill wastewater (RPMW) in Morocco. This paper provides a research on anaerobic digestion of RPMW using UASB technology. The UASB digester was designed following the characterization of wastewater and the feed rate, with the volume of 70 liters. The UASB reactor treating the RPMW was operated for 130 days with minimal overload problems. The experiments were carried out in the mesophilic temperature (37 °C) at different organic loading rates (OLR). A daily analysis was performed to ensure the efficiency of the digester. In this study, the AD experiment was performed in continuous mode with an effluent inlet flow rate equal to 1 L/h. Using the optimal OLR value 5.18 g COD/Ld and with an effluent 5,7 g COD/L, a biogas yield of 92 N mL/g COD removed (at normal temperature and pressure) was obtained during the RPMW anaerobic treatment. The reactor was operated at an optimal hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 15.14 h with a biogas production volume of the optimal value 62.5 L/d. These results indicate that RPMW can be effectively treated in a UASB reactor with the advantage of producing biogas. Objective: The main objective of this study is the evaluation of RPPW anaerobic digestion feasibility at laboratory scale under Mesophilic condition. The experiment is conducted using a two-stage biofilm digester of 5 L capacity with mobile support material., Results: Anaerobic treatment of wastewater from recycled pulp and paper industry in Morocco was tested using a laboratory-scale anaerobic biofilm digester that operated under mesophilic conditions over a 70-day. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) efficiency, volatile and total solid (VS, TS) elimination of the substrate during the process were: 78%, 52% and 48% respectively. The system was stable throughout its operating cycle with an optimum pH (7.24), alkalinity (1750 mg CaCO 3 /L) and a volatile fatty acid value (760 mg/L). The experimental daily biogas production measured reaches a value of 5 L/day with a composition of 71% methane, 27.6% carbon dioxide, 0.2 oxygen and 7713 ppm of the H 2 S. The study results show that the anaerobic biofilm reactor is a suitable technique for recycled pulp and paper wastewater (RPPW) treatment. The reactor shows high performances in terms of process stability, removal efficiency (> 70%) and biogas production., Conclusion: Anaerobic digestion is an efficient waste treatment technology that uses natural anaerobic decomposition to reduce the volume of waste while producing biogas. However, research is needed to strengthen microbial metabolism, biochemistry and the functioning of the rector to improve biogas production. The RPPW AD experiment with biofilm digester technology was stable throughout the operation period. The digester knows an overloaded in the last phase of the experiment which leads to an inhibition of biogas production.

Sewage sludge is a hazardous waste, which must be managed adequately. Mesophilic anaerobic digestion is a widely employed treatment for sewage sludge involving several disadvantages such as low methane yield, poor biodegradability, and nutrient imbalance. Tomato waste was proposed as an easily biodegradable co-substrate to increase the viability of the process in a centralized system. The mixture proportion of sewage sludge and tomato waste evaluated was 95:5 (wet weight), respectively. The stability was maintained within correct parameters in an organic loading rate from 0.4 to 2.2 kg total volatile solids (VS)/m(3) day. Moreover, the methane yield coefficient was 159 l/kg VS (0 °C, 1 atm), and the studied mixture showed a high anaerobic biodegradability of 95 % (in VS). Although the ammonia concentration increased until 1,864 ± 23 mg/l, no inhibition phenomenon was determined in the stability variables, methane yield, or kinetics parameters studied.

Mesophilic anaerobic digestion is a treatment that is widely applied for sewage sludge management but has several disadvantages such as low methane yield, poor biodegradability and nutrient imbalance. In this paper, we propose orange peel waste as an easily biodegradable co-substrate to improve the viability of the process. Sewage sludge and orange peel waste were mixed at a proportion of 70:30 (wet weight), respectively. The stability was maintained within correct parameters throughout the process, while the methane yield coefficient and biodegradability were 165 L/kg volatile solids (VS) (0 degrees C, 1 atm) and 76% (VS), respectively. The organic loading rate (OLR) increased from 0.4 to 1.6kg VS/m3 d. Nevertheless, the OLR and methane production rate decreased at the highest loads, suggesting the occurrence of an inhibition phenomenon.
