Abstract

This study explored basic psychological needs (BPN) experiences, motivation to continue living, and psychological well-being in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients during adjuvant treatment. Qualitative data from 30 participants (ten CRC patients, ten relatives and ten healthcare professionals) were collected by performing two sets of semi-structured interviews. Three categories were identified: (a) BPN frustration, (b) hope as a source of motivation, and (c) sources of hope. This last category included several subcategories: positive attitude, religious faith, positive medical feedback, knowing that they were going to receive a short-term chemotherapy, and being aware that other patients were in a worse condition. CRC patients felt their basic psychological needs were thwarted during adjuvant treatment. However, hopeful thoughts were reported as relevant sources of motivation to live, which positively impacted on patients' psychological well-being. 20. A Self-Determined Exploration of Adolescents' and Parents' Experiences Derived from a Multidimensional School-Based Physical Activity Intervention

Abstract

Purpose: Adolescents' and parents' experiences within a multidimensional school-based physical activity intervention grounded on self-determination theory were explored. Method: Qualitative data from 29 adolescents (aged 15-17 years) and three parents on behalf of the total students' families were collected via participant observation (research diary), semistructured interviews, and focus groups. Results: Adolescents perceived that the application of motivational strategies, based on self-determination theory, satisfied their basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness, favored self-determined motivation, and gave rise to adaptive consequences (improved physical activity knowledge, creation of affective bonds, and increased leisure-time physical activity). These results were supported by the information reported by the students' parents. Discussion/Conclusions: The findings support the implementation of self-determination theory-based multidimensional interventions to promote adolescents' physical activity participation. This study also presents several motivational strategies which could be useful for the design and implementation of future school-based physical activity interventions.

Abstract

PurposeMethodsResultsConclusionCancer-related fatigue (CRF) is the most common and debilitating symptom experienced by breast cancer survivors (BCS) following treatment. The influence of genetics on CRF has been sparingly investigated. This article aims to explore the suggested impact of the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) Val158Met genotypes on fatigue and to evaluate the effect on other potentially related patient-reported outcomes such as quality of life, diet, pain, or emotional facets; and also the effect on objective variables such as, heart rate variability (HRV), physical activity (PA), and biomarkers (cortisol, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, and noradrenaline).A total of 79 BCS who had finished their treatment participated in this study. COMT genotypes were categorized as Val/Val, Val/Met, or Met/Met. PERFORM questionnaire was utilized to evaluate CRF. PA and HRV were objectively measured. The rest of the variables was assessed by questionnaires.BCS with Met/Met genotype reported higher levels of fatigue (p = 0.031), compared to those with Val/Met or Val/Val genotypes. No additional associations were found with other self-reported variables, HRV, PA, or the analysed biomarkers. The findings suggest that BCS with Met/Met genotype exhibit more elevated levels of fatigue.Genetic factors could have a role in the pathogenesis of CRF. Abstract

This study aimed to determine the time elapsed since the last dental care visit and its associated factors among older adults in Peru from 2019 to 2021. This was an analytical cross-sectional study utilizing secondary data analysis. The population comprised 210,862 records of older adults from 2019 to 2021, with a final sample of 11,215 records. The dependent variable was the time elapsed since the last dental care visit, while the independent variable was the year, with population characteristics included as covariates. Both bivariate and multivariate analyses were employed. The mean time elapsed since the last dental care visit was 7.93 years (SD = 8.03) in 2019, 7.93 years (SD = 7.28) in 2020, and 7.76 years (SD = 8.01) in 2021, with non-statistically significant difference between medians (p =.050). Hierarchical multiple linear regression analysis indicated that a model incorporating year, health, geographic, and socio-demographic characteristics demonstrated a greater determination coefficient (R 2% =.90) and validity (p <.001). The mean time elapsed since the last dental care visit among older adults in Peru was 7.93 years in both 2019 and 2020, and 7.76 years in 2021; geographic characteristics, wealth index, and age were identified as associated factors. Abstract

The process of examiner calibration is an essential step in all epidemiological research, as it aims to ensure uniform interpretation, understanding, and application of the instrument to be used. This ensures that the data collected will be valid and reliable. This study aimed to determine the differences in concordance in dental caries calibration across three dental specialties. The population consisted of 45 dentists, divided into three groups: 15 general dentists working in the public sector, 15 dentists specializing in Dental Public Health, and 15 dentists specializing in Restorative and Aesthetic Dentistry. The calibration process was carried out in three stages: theory, calibration using photographs, and calibration on natural teeth, performed by the gold standard. In the first validity process, a statistical difference was only found between the Kappa values of the inter-examiner calibration process using photographs. For the evaluation of teeth, in the second validity process, 33.33% (n = 15) of the participants achieved "almost perfect agreement." Abstract

The current study focused on processes underlying Cuban students' academic performance. Using path analyses, the model examined the relations between family relationships and academic performance mediated by belongingness and moderated by sex differences among Cuban medical students (N = 613; M age = 21.39, SD = 2.05). Findings indicated that improved family relationships significantly predicted increased belongingness to the field of medicine for both male and female students. The relation between belongingness and academic performance was only significant for male students. Abstract

Subjective well-being (SW) is understood as the personal judgment that an individual has about their value, perception, and level of satisfaction with respect to his or her life and existence. The present study had the purpose of understanding how pandemics have affected subjective well-being; therefore, the objective was to determine the subjective well-being of the staff at a teaching dental center in a COVID-19 epidemiological surveillance system between the years 2020 and 2022. A cross-sectional design was applied and was based on data from two records of the Centro Dental Docente of the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, Lima, Peru, between the years 2021 and 2022. The results show that the mean SW did not significantly vary (p = 0.114) between 2021 (69.32; SD = 19.92) and 2022 (63.16; SD = 29.87). At a bivariate level, significant associations were also observed between SW and multiple variables such as the diagnosis and type of COVID-19, vaccination, contact with COVID-19 patients, systemic conditions, body mass index, educational level, gender, and age. Meanwhile, according to the regression analysis, not having COVID-19 was positively associated with higher levels of subjective well-being. This study highlights the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental and emotional states of dental healthcare personnel, emphasizing the need for strategies to mitigate stress and anxiety in such critical work environments. Abstract

Despite remarkable improvement in the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) care continuum, the rate of late diagnosis of HIV and HCV in high-income countries remains unacceptably high. Testing relies mainly on primary care physicians' identification of risk factors. We aimed to adapt an analogic to an online questionnaire to help HIV and HCV screening and perform a pilot study to assess its accuracy and acceptability. We used the Delphi method to adapt a previously validated analogical questionnaire to a user-friendly online tool. It aimed to identify participants who should be screened for HIV or HCV and those who should be referred for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). We then designed a proof-of-concept pilot study from July to October 2022 to test its feasibility and suitability for use on a larger scale and to assess its accuracy in identifying patients at risk for HIV or HCV or with indication for PrEP. The final questionnaire consisted of 37 questions. A total of 142 participants provided informed consent, and 102 completed the questionnaire: 41 random patients recruited at the primary care level, 10 participants recently diagnosed with HIV, 20 participants with HIV on follow-up, 21 participants from the PrEP program, and 10 patients diagnosed with HCV. The tool adequately indicated the need for testing in more than 98% of participants with confirmed HIV/HCV infections or in the PrEP program. Furthermore, it adequately assessed PrEP referral in 94% of participants already on PrEP or with known HIV infection. Participants were highly satisfied with the tool, and 98% of them recommended its use. A self-administered web-based tool to identify patients who should be tested for HIV or HCV or referred to PrEP could simplify patient selection and help reduce late diagnosis.
