OBJECTIVE: In Türkiye, anti-tobacco legislation (Law No. 4207 on the Prevention and Control of Harms of Tobacco Products) aims to ensure a “tobacco-free” life for current and future generations. Thus, there are observations of violations in the hospitality sector. In this study, we aimed to observe the status of hospitality venues’ violation of the law in 11 different cities in Türkiye. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This descriptive study examined 772 hospitality venues in Ankara, Burdur, Diyarbakır, Giresun, Hatay, İstanbul, İzmir, Kars, Kayseri, Samsun, and Zonguldak between August 1 and October 10, 2023. The Google Forms survey, Microsoft Excel, and IBM SPSS Statistics (Version 23) programs were used for data collection, entry, and analysis. A logistic regression model was used to understand the associations between non-compliance and the characteristics of the venues. RESULTS: During the observation of indoor spaces, tobacco products were used in 282 venues (37.1%). Non-compliance in bars, pubs, traditional coffee houses, and hookah cafes was statistically significantly higher than in the other venue types [odds ratio (OR)= 3.031, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.699 to 5.408, P < 0.001]. The presence of a retractable roof and/or side wall (OR=5.362, 95% CI: 3.518 to 8.173, p < 0.001), later hour observations (OR= 2.120, 95% CI: 1.399 to 3.212, p < 0.001), and the existence of outdoor venues where smoking is permitted (OR= 3.165, 95% CI: 2.170 to 4.617, p < 0.001) also increased indoor violations. CONCLUSION: The findings provided scientific evidence that violations of Turkish anti-tobacco legislation exist in hospitality venues. The public authorities are advised to play their vital role in preventing violations in indoor spaces.

Objective: A limited number of studies focus on pharmacy technicians (PT) and their knowledge level regarding migraines. The present study aimed to determine their level of awareness and knowledge regarding migraines and migraine treatment. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine in Kayseri, Türkiye. It was conducted from February 2019 to May 2019 and completed with the participation of 324 PTs (75.8% response rate). Forms containing questions about the diagnosis of migraines, the characteristics, and the treatments were administered to the PTs in person and then evaluated by a neurologist. Results: The ratio of PTs who knew of a drug therapy that reduced migraine attacks was 10.2%. Most PTs (85.2%) had no training in migraine treatment and obtained knowledge from their work experience. Ninety-one participants (28.1%) recommended medication to patients who visited the pharmacy due to headaches. When asked about the drug they recommend for migraines, 29.6% suggested ergotamine, 26.9% suggested analgesics, and 15.7% suggested triptans. Conclusion: The results of this study revealed that PTs working in pharmacies that support primary care services might not have sufficient awareness and knowledge about migraine treatments, and appropriate training should be provided on this subject.

Amaç: Ülkemizde yaşlı nüfus artmakta ve yaşlılık dönemi sorunları da giderek önem kazanmaktadır. Yaşlı bireylerin zihinsel sağlıkları ve beslenme durumları birbiriyle ilişkilidir ve özenle ele alınmalıdır. Bu çalışmada 65 yaş üstü bireylerde depresyon ve malnutrisyon oranları, depresyonu etkileyen faktörler ve malnutrisyon-depresyon ilişkisi araştırılmıştır. Yöntem: Çalışma; Kayseri ili Hacılar ilçesinde 65 yaş ve üzerinde olan 101 kişide yapılmıştır. Olası depresyon tanımlaması için Geriatrik Depresyon Ölçeği (GDÖ), beslenme durumu tespiti için Mini Nutrisyon Anketi (MNA), yüz yüze görüşme yöntemiyle sorgulanmıştır. Bulgular: Araştırmaya alınan 101 kişinin yaş ortalaması 73.63 ± 5.74 (min:65-max:94) yıldır. Grubun %83.2’si halen kendi evinde yaşamakta olup, %74.3’ünde en az bir kronik hastalık mevcuttur. Depresyon puanlarına göre %7.9’unun depresif yakınmaları mevcuttur. Depresyon puanı ortalaması: 10,26 ± 5,48 (min:1-max:23) dir. Kadınlarda, aylık ortalama eğitim ve geliri düşük olanlarda, kronik hastalığı olanlarda, diyet uygulayanlarda depresyon puanları daha yüksektir. Beslenme puanlarına göre %4.0’ünde malnutrisyon, %66.3’ünde malnutrisyon riski mevcuttur. Depresyon puanı ile yeme puanı arasında ilişki vardır. Beslenme puanı düştükçe (malnutrisyon), depresyon puanı (depresyona doğru) artmaktadır. Sonuç: Depresyon puanları kadınlarda, düşük eğitim ve gelir düzeyi olanlarda, kronik hastalık varlığında ve beslenmesi kötü olan yaşlı bireylerde yüksekti. Yaşlılık döneminde depresyon ve beslenme bozukluklarının birbirine yol açabilen durumlar olarak çok yönlü ele alınması gerektiği sonucuna varılmıştır. Anahtar Kelimeler: Yaşlılık, depresyon, malnutrisyon The Relationship between Malnutrition and Depression in People Aged Over 65 Years Objective: The nutritional status and mental health of elderly people are related to each other and must be handled carefully. In this study we evaluated the rates of depression and malnutrition, factors affecting depression and the relationship between malnutrition and depression. Method: A hundred and one people aged over 65 and living in Hacılar town of Kayseri city were included in this study. The Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) and Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) scale were used for evaluating depression and nutritional status, respectively.Results: According to the elderly person’s depression scores, 7.9% were depressive. The average depression score was 10.27 ± 5.48 (min:1-max:23). Depression scores were high for women, low income and presence of chronic disease. Based on the malnutrition score, 4.0% had malnutrition and 66.3% had risk of malnutrition. There was a correlation between depression and nutrition scores; as the depression score increases (depression) the nutrition score decreases (malnutrition). Conclusion: Depression scores were higher for women and in relation to low income, low educational status, presence of chronic disease and bad nutritional status of the elderly person. Thus, it may be concluded that depression and nutritional disorders must be handled as multifaceted issues that may affect each other. Key Words: Aged (elderly), depression, malnutrition

Aim: At the present day osteoporosis is an important subject of public health concern. Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disorder, which is characterized by increased bone fragility and increased fracture risk. The aim of this study was to evaluate women’s knowledge and attitude about osteoporosis. Patients and Method: The study was performed in 2006 at Kayseri Melikgazi Health Group Headship’s 14 village clinic area on 800 women over 18 years old who accepted to join this study. İt is performed by home visits with a descriptive questionnaire which concernes knowledge, attitude and risk factors about osteporosis. Results: Women merge in the study, 74.6% is at 18-49 age group, 49.0% is first and second degree graduated, 83.5% is housewife and 29.8% is at menaposis. Summary: Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the epidemiological characteristics of tularemia outbreak and the effect of climate variability on this outbreak in Kayseri. Methods: The outbreak places, infection dates, source of infection, and the number of cases were recorded and analyzed. This information was obtained from the Regional Public Health Department. Climate data were supplied by the Regional Meteorological Service. Results: The first case in Sariz was recorded in 2005. Thereafter, 2 cases were reported in 2006 and 1 case in 2007. During 2010, 21 cases were recorded in 7 towns, 62 cases in 2011 and 27 cases in 2012. A total number of 110 cases were recorded in 12 out of 16 towns in Kayseri Province between 2010 and 2012. The majority of cases were seen in the north-eastern, east and south-eastern parts of Kayseri Province; located in higher altitudes (over 1000 m from sea level). It was accepted that the outbreak was originated from water sources and was confirmed by few number of water samples collected from outbreak areas. Considering climate variations, the outbreak occurred between 1988 and 2009 during a dry, low humid, high temperature period after rainy season. Conclusion: A tularemia outbreak was observed between 2010 and 2012 with the initiation of rainy years. High temperature for a long period accompanied by low rainfall and low humidity may affect the vector's biology and initiate a tularemia outbreak in high plateaus in Kayseri Province and around.
