Nuclear reactions drive the stellar evolution and contribute to the stellar and galactic chemicals abundances. New determinations of the nuclear reaction rates for key fusion reactions of stellar evolution are now available, paving the way to improved stellar model predictions. We explore the impact of new C12+C12 reaction rates for massive stars evolution, structure, and nucleosynthesis during core carbon-burning phase. We analyse the consequences for stars of different masses including rotation-induced mixing. We computed a grid of massive stars at solar metallicity using the stellar evolution code GENEC. We explored the results using three different references for the rates, with or without rotation. We study the effect in terms of evolution, structure, and critical mass limit between intermediate and massive stars. We explored the consequences for nucleosynthesis during the core C-burning phase by means of a one-zone nucleosynthesis code. We confirm the significant impact of using the recent nuclear reaction rates following the hindrance hypothesis as well as the mass-dependent effect of a resonance at 2.14 MeV. This impacts the characteristics of the core of stars from the C-ignition and during all the core C-burning phase. The change of rates modifies the central nucleosynthesis during the core C-burning phase, resulting in an underproduction of s-process elements. The correct and accurate determination of the nuclear reaction rates, with especially the existence and location of resonances, impacts stellar evolution in many aspects affecting the model predictions. The choice of the nuclear reaction rates reference for the C12+C12 fusion reaction changes significantly the behaviour of the core during the C-burning phase. In addition to being spectacular objects, Very Massive Stars (VMS) are suspected to have a tremendous impact on their environment and on the whole cosmic evolution. The nucleosynthesis both during their advanced stages and their final explosion may contribute greatly to the overall enrichment of the Universe. Their resulting supernovae are candidates for the most superluminous events and their extreme conditions also lead to very important radiative and mechanical feedback effects, from local to cosmic scale. We explore the impact of rotation and metallicity on the evolution of very massive stars across cosmic times. With the recent implementation of an equation of state in the GENEC stellar evolution code, appropriate for describing the conditions in the central regions of very massive stars in the advanced phases, we present new results on VMS evolution from Population III to solar metallicity. Low metallicity VMS models are highly sensitive to rotation, while the evolution of higher metallicity models is dominated by mass loss effects. The mass loss affects strongly their surface velocity evolution, breaking quickly at high metallicity while reaching the critical velocity for low metallicity models. The comparison to observed VMS in the LMC shows that the mass loss prescriptions used for these models are compatible with observed mass loss rates. In our framework for modelling rotation, our models of VMS need a high initial velocity to reproduce the observed surface velocities. The surface enrichment of these VMS is difficult to explain with only one initial composition, and could suggest multiple populations in the R136 cluster. At a metallicity typical of R136, only our non- or slowly rotating VMS models may produce Pair Instability supernovae. Context. Asteroseismic studies showed that cores of post main-sequence stars rotate slower than theoretically predicted by stellar models with purely hydrodynamical transport processes. Recent studies on main sequence stars, particularly Gamma Doradus ($\gamma$ Dor) stars, revealed their internal rotation rate for hundreds of stars, offering a counterpart on the main sequence for studies of angular momentum transport. Aims. We investigate whether such a disagreement between observed and predicted internal rotation rates is present in main sequence stars by studying angular momentum transport in $\gamma$ Dor stars. Furthermore, we test whether models of rotating stars with internal magnetic fields can reproduce their rotational properties. Methods. We compute rotating models with the Geneva stellar evolution code taking into account meridional circulation and the shear instability. We also compute models with internal magnetic fields using a general formalism for transport by the Tayler-Spruit dynamo. We then compare these models to observational constraints for $\gamma$ Dor stars that we compiled from the literature, combining so the core rotation rates, projected rotational velocities from spectroscopy, and constraints on their fundamental parameters. Results. We show that combining the different observational constraints available for $\gamma$ Dor stars enable to clearly distinguish the different scenarios for internal angular momentum transport. Stellar models with purely hydrodynamical processes are in disagreement with the data whereas models with internal magnetic fields can reproduce both core and surface constraints simultaneously. Conclusions. Similarly to results obtained for subgiant and red giant stars, angular momentum transport in radiative regions of $\gamma$ Dor stars is highly efficient, in good agreement with predictions of models with internal magnetic fields., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. 16 pages, 17 figures, 1 appendix

The $^{26}$Al short-lived radioactive nuclide is the source of the observed galactic diffuse $\gamma$-ray emission at 1.8 MeV. While different sources of $^{26}$Al have been explored, such as AGB stars, massive stars winds, and supernovae, the contribution of very massive stars has never been studied. We study the stellar wind contribution of very massive stars, i.e stars with initial masses between 150 and 300 M$_\odot$, to the enrichment in $^{26}$Al of the galactic interstellar medium. We discuss the production of $^{26}$Al by studying rotating and non-rotating very massive stellar models with initial masses between 150 and 300 M$_\odot$ for metallicities Z=0.006, 0.014, and 0.020. We confront this result to a simple Milky Way model taking into account both the metallicity and the star formation rate gradients. We obtain that very massive stars in the Z=0.006-0.020 metallicity range might be very significant contributors to the $^{26}$Al enrichment of the interstellar medium. Typically, the contribution of the winds of massive stars to the total quantity of $^{26}$Al in the Galaxy increases by 150\% when very massive stars are considered. Very massive stars, despite their rarity, might be important contributors to $^{26}$Al and overall very important actors for nucleosynthesis in the Galaxy., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Under appropriate technical assumptions, the simple-loop theory allows to deduce various types of asymptotic expansions for the eigenvalues of Toeplitz matrices generated by a function $f$. Independently and under the milder hypothesis that $f$ is even and monotonic over $[0,\pi]$, matrix-less algorithms have been developed for the fast eigenvalue computation of large Toeplitz matrices, within a linear complexity in the matrix order: behind the high efficiency of such algorithms there are the expansions predicted by the simple-loop theory, combined with the extrapolation idea. Here we focus our attention on a change of variable, followed by the asymptotic expansion of the new variable, and we adapt the matrix-less algorithm to the considered new setting. Numerical experiments show a higher precision (till machine precision) and the same linear computation cost, when compared with the matrix-less procedures already presented in the relevant literature. Among the advantages, we concisely mention the following: a) when the coefficients of the simple-loop function are analytically known, the algorithm computes them perfectly; b) while the proposed algorithm is better or at worst comparable to the previous ones for computing the inner eigenvalues, it is extremely better for the computation of the extreme eigenvalues.

This work presents new $^{12}$C + $^{12}$C reaction rates in the form of numerical tables with associated uncertainty estimation, as well as analytical formulae that can be directly implemented into stellar evolution codes. This article further describes the impact of these new rates on C-burning in stars. We determine reaction rates for two cross-section extrapolation models: one based on the fusion-hindrance phenomenon, and the other on fusion-hindrance plus a resonance, and compare our results to previous data. Using the GENEC stellar evolution code, we study how these new rates impact the C-burning phases in two sets of stellar models for stars with 12 M$_{\odot}$ and 25 M$_{\odot}$ initial masses chosen to be highly representative of the diversity of massive stars. The effective temperatures of C-burning in both sets of stellar models are entirely covered by the sensitivity of the present experimental data, and no extrapolation of the rates is required. Although, the rates may differ by more than an order of magnitude for temperatures typical of C-burning, the impacts on the stellar structures during that phase remain modest. This is a consequence of the readjustment of the stellar structure to a change of nuclear reaction rate for reactions important for energy production. For the hindrance case, the C-burning phase is found to occur at central temperatures 10\% higher than with the hindrance plus resonance rate. Its C-burning lifetime is reduced by a factor of two. This model, nevertheless, loses more entropy than the other one thus enters earlier into the degeneracy regime which will impact the last stages of the evolution at the pre-core collapse time. The hindrance model produces up to 60% more neon. The impact of the different rates on the s-process occurring during the C-burning phase is modest, changing final abundances of s-processed elements by at most 20% (cobalt)., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

3D hydrodynamics models of deep stellar convection exhibit turbulent entrainment at the convective-radiative boundary which follows the entrainment law, varying with boundary penetrability. We implement the entrainment law in the 1D Geneva stellar evolution code. We then calculate models between 1.5 and 60 M$_{\odot}$ at solar metallicity ($Z=0.014$) and compare them to previous generations of models and observations on the main sequence. The boundary penetrability, quantified by the bulk Richardson number, $Ri_{\mathrm{B}}$, varies with mass and to a smaller extent with time. The variation of $Ri_{\mathrm{B}}$ with mass is due to the mass dependence of typical convective velocities in the core and hence the luminosity of the star. The chemical gradient above the convective core dominates the variation of $Ri_{\mathrm{B}}$ with time. An entrainment law method can therefore explain the apparent mass dependence of convective boundary mixing through $Ri_{\mathrm{B}}$. New models including entrainment can better reproduce the mass dependence of the main sequence width using entrainment law parameters $A \sim 2 \times 10^{-4}$ and $n=1$. Spectroscopic studies of Galactic O and B stars show that many stars with masses above 8 M$_{\odot}$ are observed in the HR diagram just beyond the Main-Sequence (MS) band predicted by stellar models computed with a moderate overshooting. This may be an indication that the convective core sizes in stars in the upper part of the HR diagram are larger than predicted by these models. Combining stellar evolution models and spectroscopic parameters derived for a large sample of Galactic O and B stars, including brand new information about their projected rotational velocities, we reexamine the question of the convective core size in MS massive stars. We confirm that for stars more massive than about 8 M$_{\odot}$, the convective core size at the end of the MS phase increases more rapidly with the mass than in models computed with a constant step overshoot chosen to reproduce the main sequence width in the low mass range (around 2 M$_{\odot}$). This conclusion is valid for both the cases of non-rotating models and rotating models either with a moderate or a strong angular momentum transport. The increase of the convective core mass with the mass obtained from the TAMS position is, however, larger than the one deduced from the surface velocity drop for masses above about 15 M$_{\odot}$. Although observations available at the moment cannot decide what is the best choice between the core sizes given by the TAMS and the velocity drop, we discuss different methods to get out of this dilemma. At the moment, comparisons with eclipsing binaries seem to favor the solution given by the velocity drop. While we confirm the need for larger convective cores at higher masses, we find tensions in-between different methods for stars more massive than 15 M$_{\odot}$. The use of single-aged stellar populations (non-interacting binaries or stellar clusters) would be a great asset to resolve this tension., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

Apsidal motion in massive eccentric binaries offers precious information about the internal structure of the stars. This is especially true for twin binaries consisting of two nearly identical stars. We make use of the tidally induced apsidal motion in the twin binary HD152248 to infer constraints on the internal structure of the O7.5 III-II stars composing this system. We build stellar evolution models with the code Cl\'es assuming different prescriptions for the internal mixing occurring inside the stars. We identify the models that best reproduce the observationally determined present-day properties of the components of HD152248, as well as their $k_2$, and the apsidal motion rate of the system. We analyse the impact of some poorly constrained input parameters, including overshooting, turbulent diffusion, and metallicity. We further build 'single' and 'binary' GENEC models that account for stellar rotation to investigate the impacts of binarity and rotation. We discuss some effects that could bias our interpretation of the apsidal motion in terms of the internal structure constant. Reproducing the observed $k_2$ value and rate of apsidal motion simultaneously with the other stellar parameters requires a significant amount of internal mixing or enhanced mass-loss. The results suggest that a single-star evolution model is sufficient to describe the physics inside this binary system. Qualitatively, the high turbulent diffusion required to reproduce the observations could be partly attributed to stellar rotation. Higher-order terms in the apsidal motion are negligible. Only a very severe misalignment of the rotation axes could significantly impact the rate of apsidal motion, but such a high misalignment is highly unlikely in such a binary system. We infer an age estimate of $5.15\pm0.13$ Myr for the binary and initial masses of $32.8\pm0.6$ M$_\odot$ for both stars., Comment: 16 pages, A&A accepted

Grids of stellar models are useful tools to derive the properties of stellar clusters, in particular young clusters hosting massive stars, and to provide information on the star formation process in various mass ranges. Because of their short evolutionary timescale, massive stars end their life while their low-mass siblings are still on the pre-main sequence (pre-MS) phase. Thus the study of young clusters requires consistent consideration of all the phases of stellar evolution. But despite the large number of grids that are available in the literature, a grid accounting for the evolution from the pre-MS accretion phase to the post-MS phase in the whole stellar mass range is still lacking. We build a grid of stellar models at solar metallicity with masses from 0.8 $M_\odot$ to 120 $M_\odot$, including pre-MS phase with accretion. We use the {\sc genec} code to run stellar models on this mass range. The accretion law is chosen to match the observations of pre-MS objects on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. We describe the evolutionary tracks and isochrones of our models. The grid is connected to previous MS and post-MS grids computed with the same numerical method and physical assumptions, which provides the widest grid in mass and age to date. Numerical tables of our models and corresponding isochrones are available online.

Extended MS turn-offs are features commonly found in the colour-magnitude diagrams of young and intermediate age (less than about 2 Gyr) massive star clusters, where the MS turn-off is broader than can be explained by photometric uncertainties, crowding, or binarity. Rotation is suspected to be the cause of this feature, by accumulating fast rotating stars, strongly affected by gravity darkening and rotation-induced mixing, near the MS turn-off. This scenario successfully reproduces the tight relation between the age and the actual extent in luminosity of the extended MS turn-off of observed clusters. Below a given mass (dependent on the metallicity), stars are efficiently braked early on the MS due to the interaction of stellar winds and the surface magnetic field, making their tracks converge towards those of non-rotating tracks in the HRD. When these stars are located at the turn-off of a cluster, their slow rotation causes the extended MS turn-off feature to disappear. We investigate the maximal mass for which this braking occurs at different metallicities, and determine the age above which no extended MS turn-off is expected in clusters. Our models predict that the extended MS turn-off phenomenon disappears at ages older than about 2 Gyr. There is a trend with the metallicity, the age at which the disappearance occurs becoming older at higher metallicity. These results are robust between the two codes used in this work, despite some differences in the input physics and in particular in the detailed description of rotation-induced internal processes and of angular momentum extraction by stellar winds. Comparing our results with clusters in the LMC and Galaxy shows a very good fit to the observations. Context: The observations of solar-like oscillations in evolved stars have brought important constraints on their internal rotation rates. To correctly reproduce these data, an efficient transport mechanism is needed in addition to meridional circulation and shear instability. Aims: We study the efficiency of the transport of angular momentum during the subgiant phase. Results: The precise asteroseismic measurements of both core and surface rotation rates available for the six Kepler targets enable a precise determination of the efficiency of the transport of angular momentum needed for each of these subgiants. These results are found to be insensitive to all the uncertainties related to the modelling of rotational effects before the post-main sequence phase. An interesting exception in this context is the case of young subgiants (typical values of log(g) close to 4), because their rotational properties are sensitive to the degree of radial differential rotation on the main sequence. These young subgiants constitute therefore perfect targets to constrain the transport of angular momentum on the main sequence from asteroseismic observations of evolved stars. As for red giants, we find that the efficiency of the additional transport process increases with the mass of the star during the subgiant phase. However, the efficiency of this undetermined mechanism decreases with evolution during the subgiant phase, contrary to what is found for red giants. Consequently, a transport process with an efficiency that increases with the degree of radial differential rotation cannot account for the core rotation rates of subgiants, while it correctly reproduces the rotation rates of red giant stars. This suggests that the physical nature of the additional mechanism needed for the internal transport of angular momentum may be different in subgiant and red giant stars., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present an analysis of the relatively low mass ($\sim2400$~M$_{\odot}$), $\sim800$~Myr, Galactic open cluster, NGC~2818, using Gaia DR2 results combined with VLT/FLAMES spectroscopy. Using Gaia DR2 proper motions and parallax measurements we are able to select a clean sample of cluster members. This cluster displays a clear extended main sequence turn-off (eMSTO), a phenomenon previously studied mainly in young and intermediate age massive clusters in the Magellanic clouds. The main sequence of NGC~2818 is extremely narrow, with a width of $\sim0.01$ magnitudes (G$_{\rm BP} - $ G$_{\rm RP}$), suggesting very low levels of differential extinction. Using VLT/FLAMES spectroscopy of 60 cluster members to measure the rotational velocity of the stars (Vsini) we find that stars on the red side of the eMSTO have high Vsini ($>160$~km/s) while stars on the blue side have low Vsini ($<160$~km/s), in agreement with model predictions. The cluster also follows the previously discovered trend between the age of the cluster and the extent of the eMSTO. Through the modelling of near-infrared photometry of star plus disk systems with the codes BEDISK/BERAY, we successfully describe the WISE photometric characteristics of Be stars in five young open clusters, NGC 663, NGC 869, NGC 884, NGC 3766 and NGC 4755, broadly studied in the literature. WISE photometry allows previously known Be stars to be detected and to find new Be candidates which could be confirmed spectroscopically. The location of Be stars in the WISE colour-magnitude diagram, separates them in two groups; active (Be stars hosting a developed circumstellar disk) and quiescent objects (Be stars in a diskless phase), and this way, we can explore how often stars are observed in these different stages. The variability observed in most active variable Be stars is compatible with a disk dissipation phase. We find that 50 percent of Be stars in the studied open clusters are in an active phase. We can interpret this as Be stars having a developed circumstellar disk half of the time. The location of Be stars with a developed disk in the CMD require mass loss rates in agreement with values recently reported in the literature. For these objects, we expect to have a tight relation between the equivalent width of the H{\alpha} line and the mass of the disk, if the inclination is known. We study the pulsational properties of rapidly rotating main-sequence B-type stars using linear non-adiabatic analysis of non-radial low-frequency modes taking into account the effect of rotation. We compare the properties of prograde sectoral $g$ and retrograde $r$ modes excited by the $\kappa$ mechanism at the Fe opacity peak with the newly discovered period-luminosity relation that is obeyed by a group of fast-rotating B-type stars in the young open cluster NGC 3766. The observed relation consists of two sequences in the period versus magnitude diagram, at periods shorter than 0.5 days. We find that this property is consistent with similar period-luminosity relations predicted for excited sectoral prograde $g$-modes of azimuthal orders $m=-1$ and $m=-2$ in fast-rotating stars along an isochrone. We further show that some of the rapidly rotating stars that have photometric variability with periods longer than a day may be caused by $r$-mode pulsation predicted to be excited in these stars. One fast-rotating star, in particular, shows both short and long periods that can be explained by the simultaneous excitation of $g$- and $r$-mode pulsations in models of fast-rotating stars., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Context: Constraints on the internal rotation of red giants are now available thanks to asteroseismic observations. Preliminary comparisons with rotating stellar models indicate that an undetermined additional process for the internal transport of angular momentum is required in addition to purely hydrodynamic processes. Aims: We investigate how asteroseismic measurements of red giants can help us characterize the additional transport mechanism. Methods: We first determine the efficiency of the missing transport mechanism for the low-mass red giant KIC 7341231 by computing rotating models that include an additional viscosity corresponding to this process. We then discuss the change in the efficiency of this transport of angular momentum with the mass, metallicity and evolutionary stage. Results: In the case of the low-mass red giant KIC 7341231, we find that the viscosity corresponding to the additional mechanism is constrained to the range 1 x 10^3 - 1.3 x 10^4 cm^2/s. This constraint on the efficiency of the unknown additional transport mechanism during the post-main sequence is obtained independently of any specific assumption about the modelling of rotational effects during the pre-main sequence and the main sequence (in particular, the braking of the surface by magnetized winds and the efficiency of the internal transport of angular momentum before the post-main-sequence phase). When we assume that the additional transport mechanism is at work during the whole evolution of the star together with a solar-calibrated braking of the surface by magnetized winds, the range of nu_add is reduced to 1 - 4 x 10^3 cm^2/s. In addition to being sensitive to the evolutionary stage of the star, we show that the efficiency of the unknown process for internal transport of angular momentum increases with the stellar mass., Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Massive star evolution remains only partly constrained. In particular, the exact role of rotation has been questioned by puzzling properties of OB stars in the Magellanic Clouds. Our goal is to study the relation between surface chemical composition and rotational velocity, and to test predictions of evolutionary models including rotation. We have performed a spectroscopic analysis of a sample of fifteen Galactic O7-8 giant stars. This sample is homogeneous in terms of mass, metallicity and evolutionary state. It is made of stars with a wide range of projected rotational velocities. We show that the sample stars are located on the second half of the main sequence, in a relatively narrow mass range (25-40 Msun). Almost all stars with projected rotational velocities above 100 km/s have N/C ratios about ten times the initial value. Below 100 km/s a wide range of N/C values is observed. The relation between N/C and surface gravity is well reproduced by various sets of models. Some evolutionary models including rotation are also able to consistently explain slowly rotating, highly enriched stars. This is due to differential rotation which efficiently transports nucleosynthesis products and allows the surface to rotate slower than the core. In addition, angular momentum removal by winds amplifies surface braking on the main sequence. Comparison of the surface composition of O7-8 giant stars with a sample of B stars with initial masses about four times smaller reveal that chemical enrichment scales with initial mass, as expected from theory. Although evolutionary models that include rotation face difficulties in explaining the chemical properties of O- and B-type stars at low metallicity, some of them can consistently account for the properties of main-sequence Galactic O stars in the mass range 25-40 Msun, Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures + appendix , A&A accepted

$Context.$ Pulsating stars are windows to the physics of stars enabling us to see glimpses of their interior. Not all stars pulsate, however. On the main sequence, pulsating stars form an almost continuous sequence in brightness, except for a magnitude range between $\delta$ Scuti and slowly pulsating B stars. Against all expectations, 36 periodic variables were discovered in 2013 in this luminosity range in the open cluster NGC 3766, the origins of which was a mystery. $Aims.$ We investigate the properties of those new variability class candidates in relation to their stellar rotation rates and stellar multiplicity. $Methods.$ We took multi-epoch spectra over three consecutive nights using ESO's Very Large Telescope. $Results.$ We find that the majority of the new variability class candidates are fast-rotating pulsators that obey a new period-luminosity relation. We argue that the new relation discovered here has a different physical origin to the period-luminosity relations observed for Cepheids. $Conclusions.$ We anticipate that our discovery will boost the relatively new field of stellar pulsation in fast-rotating stars, will open new doors for asteroseismology, and will potentially offer a new tool to estimate stellar ages or cosmic distances., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A Letters

Key physical ingredients governing the evolution of massive stars are mass losses, convection and mixing in radiative zones. These effects are important both in the frame of single and close binary evolution. We use the Geneva Syclist isochrone models that include the effects of stellar rotation to investigate the role that rotation has on the resulting colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) of young and intermediate age clusters. We find that if a distribution of rotation velocities exists within the clusters, rotating stars will remain on the main sequence (MS) for longer, appearing to be younger than non-rotating stars within the same cluster. This results in an extended main sequence turn-off (eMSTO) that appears at young ages ($\sim30$~Myr) and lasts beyond 1~Gyr. If this eMSTO is interpreted as an age spread, the resulting age spread is proportional to the age of the cluster, i.e. young clusters ($<100$~Myr) appear to have small age spreads (10s of Myr) whereas older clusters ($\sim1$~Gyr) appear to have much larger spreads, up to a few hundred Myr. We compare the predicted spreads for a sample of rotation rates to observations of young and intermediate age clusters, and find a strong correlation between the measured 'age spread' and the age of the cluster, in good agreement with models of stellar rotation. The post main-sequence evolution of massive stars is very sensitive to many parameters of the stellar models. Key parameters are the mixing processes, the metallicity, the mass-loss rate and the effect of a close companion. We study how the red supergiant lifetimes, the tracks in the Hertzsprung-Russel diagram (HRD), the positions in this diagram of the pre-supernova progenitor as well as the structure of the stars at that time change for various mass-loss rates during the red supergiant phase (RSG), and for two different initial rotation velocities. The surface abundances of RSGs are much more sensitive to rotation than to the mass-loss rates during that phase. A change of the RSG mass-loss rate has a strong impact on the RSG lifetimes and therefore on the luminosity function of RSGs. At solar metallicity, the enhanced mass-loss rate models do produce significant changes on the populations of blue, yellow and red supergiants. When extended blue loops or blue ward excursions are produced by enhanced mass-loss, the models predict that a majority of blue (yellow) supergiants are post RSG objects. These post RSG stars are predicted to show much smaller surface rotational velocities than similar blue supergiants on their first crossing of the HR gap. The position in the HRD of the end point of the evolution depends on the mass of the hydrogen envelope. More precisely, whenever, at the pre-supernova stage, the H-rich envelope contains more than about 5\% of the initial mass, the star is a red supergiant, and whenever the H-rich envelope contains less than 1\% of the total mass the star is a blue supergiant. For intermediate situations, intermediate colors/effective temperatures are obtained. [Abridged] We aim to improve the understanding of Cepheids from an evolutionary perspective and establish the role of rotation in the Cepheid paradigm. In particular, we are interested in the contribution of rotation to the problem of Cepheid masses, and explore testable predictions of quantities that can be confronted with observations. Evolutionary models including a homogeneous and self-consistent treatment of rotation are studied in detail during the crossings of the classical instability strip (IS). The dependence of several parameters on initial rotation is studied. These parameters include mass, luminosity, temperature, lifetimes, equatorial velocity, surface abundances, and rates of period change. Several key results are obtained: i) mass-luminosity (M-L) relations depend on rotation, particularly during the blue loop phase; ii) luminosity increases between crossings of the IS. Hence, Cepheid M-L relations at fixed initial rotation rate depend on crossing number (faster rotation yields greater luminosity difference between crossings); iii) the Cepheid mass discrepancy problem vanishes when rotation and crossing number are taken into account, without a need for high core overshooting values or enhanced mass loss; iv) rotation creates dispersion around average parameters predicted at fixed mass and metallicity. This is of particular importance for the period-luminosity-relation, for which rotation is a source of intrinsic dispersion; v) enhanced surface abundances do not unambiguously distinguish Cepheids occupying the Hertzsprung gap from ones on blue loops (after dredge-up), since rotational mixing can lead to significantly enhanced Main Sequence (MS) abundances; vi) rotating models predict greater Cepheid ages than non-rotating models due to longer MS lifetimes. We study how tides in a binary system induce some specific internal shear mixing, able to substantially modify the evolution of close binaries prior to mass transfer. We construct numerical models accounting for tidal interactions, meridional circulation, transport of angular momentum, shears and horizontal turbulence and consider a variety of orbital periods and initial rotation velocities. Depending on orbital periods and rotation velocities, tidal effects may spin down (spin down Case) or spin up (spin up Case) the axial rotation. In both cases, tides may induce a large internal differential rotation. The resulting tidally induced shear mixing (TISM) is so efficient that the internal distributions of angular velocity and chemical elements are greatly influenced. The evolutionary tracks are modified, and in both cases of spin down and spin up, large amounts of nitrogen can be transported to the stellar surfaces before any binary mass transfer. Meridional circulation, when properly treated as an advection, always tends to counteract the tidal interaction, tending to spin up the surface when it is braked down and vice versa. As a consequence, the times needed for the axial angular velocity to become equal to the orbital angular velocity may be larger than given by typical synchronization timescales. Even though it is broadly accepted that single Be stars are rapidly rotating stars surrounded by a flat rotating circumstellar disk, there is still a debate about how fast these stars rotate and also about the mechanisms involved in the angular-momentum and mass input in the disk. We study the properties of stars that rotate near their critical-rotation rate and investigate the properties of the disks formed by equatorial mass ejections. We used the most recent Geneva stellar evolutionary tracks for rapidly rotating stars that reach the critical limit and used a simple model for the disk structure. We obtain that for a 9 Msun star at solar metallicity, the minimum average velocity during the Main Sequence phase to reach the critical velocity is around 330 km/s, whereas it would be 390 km/s at the metallicity of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Red giants or supergiants originating from very rapid rotators rotate six times faster and show N/C ratios three times higher than those originating from slowly rotating stars. This difference becomes stronger at lower metallicity. It might therefore be very interesting to study the red giants in clusters that show a large number of Be stars on the MS band. On the basis of our single-star models, we show that the observed Be-star fraction with cluster age is compatible with the existence of a temperature-dependent lower limit in the velocity rate required for a star to become a Be star. The mass, extension, and diffusion time of the disks produced when the star is losing mass at the critical velocity, obtained from simple parametrized expressions, are not too far from those estimated for disks around Be-type stars. At a given metallicity, the mass and the extension of the disk increase with the initial mass and with age on the MS phase. The availability of asteroseismic constraints for a large sample of stars from the missions CoRoT and Kepler paves the way for various statistical studies of the seismic properties of stellar populations. In this paper, we evaluate the impact of rotation-induced mixing and thermohaline instability on the global asteroseismic parameters at different stages of the stellar evolution from the Zero Age Main Sequence to the Thermally Pulsating Asymptotic Giant Branch to distinguish stellar populations. We present a grid of stellar evolutionary models for four metallicities (Z = 0.0001, 0.002, 0.004, and 0.014) in the mass range between 0.85 to 6.0 Msun. The models are computed either with standard prescriptions or including both thermohaline convection and rotation-induced mixing. For the whole grid we provide the usual stellar parameters (luminosity, effective temperature, lifetimes, ...), together with the global seismic parameters, i.e. the large frequency separation and asymptotic relations, the frequency corresponding to the maximum oscillation power {\nu}_{max}, the maximal amplitude A_{max}, the asymptotic period spacing of g-modes, and different acoustic radii. We discuss the signature of rotation-induced mixing on the global asteroseismic quantities, that can be detected observationally. Thermohaline mixing whose effects can be identified by spectroscopic studies cannot be caracterized with the global seismic parameters studied here. Massive stars played a key role in the early evolution of the Universe. They formed with the first halos and started the re-ionisation. It is therefore very important to understand their evolution. In this paper, we describe the strong impact of rotation induced mixing and mass loss at very low $Z$. The strong mixing leads to a significant production of primary nitrogen 14, carbon 13 and neon 22. Mass loss during the red supergiant stage allows the production of Wolf-Rayet stars, type Ib,c supernovae and possibly gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) down to almost Z=0 for stars more massive than 60 solar masses. Galactic chemical evolution models calculated with models of rotating stars better reproduce the early evolution of N/O, C/O and C12/C13. Metal-free stars are assumed to evolve at constant mass because of the very low stellar winds. This leads to large CO-core mass at the end of the evolution, so primordial stars with an initial mass between 25 and 85 Msol are expected to end as direct black holes, the explosion energy being too weak to remove the full envelope. We show that when rotation enters into play, some mass is lost because the stars are prone to reach the critical velocity during the main sequence evolution. Contrarily to what happens in the case of very low- but non zero-metallicity stars, the enrichment of the envelope by rotational mixing is very small and the total mass lost remains modest. The compactness of the primordial stars lead to a very inefficient transport of the angular momentum inside the star, so the profile of Omega(r) is close to Omega r^2 = const. As the core contracts, the rotation rate increases, and the star ends its life with a fast spinning core. Such a configuration has been shown to modify substantially the dynamics of the explosion. Where one expected a weak explosion or none at all, rotation might boost the explosion energy and drive a robust supernova. (Abridged) Rotation has been shown to play a determinant role at very low metallicity, bringing heavy mass loss where almost none was expected. Is this still true when the metallicity strictly equals zero? The aim of our study is to get an answer to this question, and to determine how rotation changes the evolution and the chemical signature of the primordial stars. We have calculated 14 differentially-rotating and non-rotating stellar models at zero metallicity, with masses between 9 and 200 Msol. The evolution has been followed up to the pre-supernova stage. We find that Z=0 models rotate with an internal profile Omega(r) close to local angular momentum conservation, because of a very weak core-envelope coupling. Rotational mixing drives a H-shell boost due to a sudden onset of CNO cycle in the shell. This boost leads to a high 14N production. Generally, the rotating models produce much more metals than their non-rotating counterparts. The mass loss is very low, even for the models that reach the critical velocity during the main sequence. Due to the low mass loss and the weak coupling, the core retains a high angular momentum at the end of the evolution. The high rotation rate at death probably leads to a much stronger explosion than previously expected, changing the fate of the models. The inclusion of our yields in a chemical evolution model of the Galactic halo predicts log values of N/O, C/O and 12C/13C ratios of -2.2, -0.95 and 50 respectively at log O/H +12 = 4.2., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A (English not corrected)

(abridged) Fast stellar rotation is currently the most promising mechanism for producing primary nitrogen in metal-poor massive stars. Chemical evolution models computed with the inclusion of the yields of fast rotating models at a metallicity $Z=10^{-8}$ can account for the high N/O abundances observed in normal metal-poor halo stars. If, as believed, intermediate mass stars did not have enough time to contribute to the interstellar medium enrichment at such low metallicities, the above result constitutes a strong case for the existence of fast rotators in the primordial Universe. An important result of stellar models of fast rotators is that large quantities of primary 13C are produced. Hence, our goal is to investigate the consequence of fast rotation on the evolution of the 12C/13C ratio in the interstellar medium at low metallicity. We predict that, if fast rotating massive stars were common phenomena in the early Universe, the primordial interstellar medium of galaxies with a star formation history similar to the one inferred for our galactic halo should have 12C/13C ratios between 30-300. Without fast rotators, the predicted 12C/13C ratios would be $\sim$ 4500 at [Fe/H]=-3.5, increasing to $\sim$ 31000 at around [Fe/H]=-5.0. Current data on very metal-poor giant normal stars in the galactic halo agree better with chemical evolution models including fast rotators. We determine which are the mechanisms accelerating the surface of single stars during the Main Sequence evolution. We have computed 112 stellar models of four different initial masses between 3 and 60 M_sun, at four different metallicities between 0 and 0.020, and with seven different values of the ratio Omega/Omega_crit between 0.1 and 0.99. For all the models, computations were performed until either the end of the Main Sequence evolution or the reaching of the critical limit. The evolution of surface velocities during the Main Sequence lifetime results from an interplay between meridional circulation (bringing angular momentum to the surface) and mass loss by stellar winds (removing it). The dependence on metallicity of these two mechanisms plays a key role in determining for each metallicity, a limiting range of initial masses (spectral types) for stars able to reach or at least approach the critical limit. Present models predict a higher frequency of fast rotating stars in clusters with ages between 10 and 25 Myr. Very massive primordial stars ($140 M_{\odot} < M < 260 M_{\odot}$) are supposed to end their lives as pair-instability supernovae. Such an event can be traced by a typical chemical signature in low metallicity stars, but at the present time, this signature is lacking in the extremely metal-poor stars we are able to observe. Does it mean that those very massive objects did not form, contrarily to the primordial star formation scenarios? Could they avoid this tragical fate? We explore the effects of rotation, anisotropic mass loss and magnetic fields on the core size of a very massive Population III model, in order to check if its mass is sufficiently modified to prevent the pair instability. We obtain that a Population III model of $150 M_{\odot}$ with $\upsilon/\upsilon_{\rm crit}=0.56$ computed with the inclusion of wind anisotropy and Tayler-Spruit dynamo avoids the pair instability explosion., Comment: to be published in the conference proceedings of First Stars III, Santa Fe, 2007

We propose the Wind of Fast Rotating Massive Stars scenario to explain the origin of the abundance anomalies observed in globular clusters. We compute and present models of fast rotating stars with initial masses between 20 and 120 Msun for an initial metallicity Z=0.0005 ([Fe/H]=-1.5). We discuss the nucleosynthesis in the H-burning core of these objects and present the chemical composition of their ejecta. We consider the impact of uncertainties in the relevant nuclear reaction rates. Fast rotating stars reach the critical velocity at the beginning of their evolution and remain near the critical limit during the rest of the main sequence and part of the He-burning phase. As a consequence they lose large amounts of material through a mechanical wind which probably leads to the formation of a slow outflowing disk. The material in this slow wind is enriched in H-burning products and presents abundance patterns similar to the chemical anomalies observed in globular cluster stars. In particular, the C, N, O, Na and Li variations are well reproduced by our model. However the rate of the 24Mg(p,gamma) has to be increased by a factor 1000 around 50 MK in order to reproduce the whole amplitude of the observed Mg-Al anticorrelation. Although the theoretical study of very low metallicity (Z) and metal-free stars is not new, their importance has recently greatly increased since two related fields have been developing rapidly. The first is cosmological simulations of the formation of the first stars and of the reionisation period. The second is the observations of extremely metal poor stars. In this paper, we present pre-supernova evolution models of massive rotating stars at very low Z (Z=1e-8) and at Z=0. Rotation has a strong impact on mass loss and nucleosynthesis. Models reaching break-up velocities lose up to ten percents of their initial mass. In very low Z models, rotational and convective mixing enhances significantly the surface content in carbon, nitrogen and oxygen (CNO) when the star becomes a red supergiant. This induces a strong mass loss for stars more massive than about 60 solar masses. Our models predict type Ib,c supernovae and gamma-ray bursts at very low Z. Rotational mixing also induces a large production of CNO elements, in particular of primary nitrogen. The stellar wind chemical composition is compatible with the most metal-poor star know to date, HE 1327-2326, for CNO elements. We investigate the effect of new stellar models, which take rotation into account, computed for a metallicity Z = 10^{-8} on the chemical evolution of the earliest phases of the Milky Way. These models are computed under the assumption that the ratio of the initial rotation velocity to the critical velocity of stars is roughly constant with metallicity. This naturally leads to faster rotation at lower metallicity, as metal poor stars are more compact than metal rich ones. We find that the new Z = 10^{-8} stellar yields have a tremendous impact on the interstellar medium nitrogen enrichment for log(O/H)+12 < 7 (or [Fe/H]< -3).We show that upon the inclusion of the Z = 10^{-8} stellar yields in chemical evolution models, both high N/O and C/O ratios are obtained in the very-metal poor metallicity range in agreement with observations. Our results give further support to the idea that stars at very low metallicities could have rotational velocities of the order of 600-800 km s^{-1}., Comment: 4 pages, A&A Letters (accepted)
