Aims: The prevalence of iron deficiency (ID) in newly diagnosed heart failure (HF) and the progression of ID in patients after initiation of HF therapy are unknown. We aimed to describe the natural trajectory of ID in patients with new onset HF during the first year after HF diagnosis, assessing associations between ID, clinical factors, and quality of life (QoL). Methods and results: A prospective cohort of patients with new onset HF in hospitals or outpatient clinics at five major hospitals in Stockholm, Sweden, during 2015–2018 were analysed with clinical assessment, electrocardiogram, blood samples including iron levels, Minnesota living with heart failure questionnaire (MLHFQ), and echocardiogram at baseline and after 12 months. Of 547 patients with new‐onset HF, 482 (88%) had complete iron data at baseline. Median age was 70 years (interquartile range 61–77) and 311 (65%) were men; 55% of patients had ejection fraction (EF) ≤ 40%, 19% had EF 41–49%, and 26% had HF with preserved EF (HFpEF) [Correction added on 26 June 2024, after first online publication: The 'Mean age was 70 years' has been corrected to 'Median age was 70 years' in this version.]. At baseline, 163 patients (34%) had ID defined as ferritin <100 μg/L or ferritin 100–299 μg/L and transferrin saturation <20%. After 12 months of follow‐up, 119 (32%) had ID of the 368 patients who had complete iron data both at baseline and after 12 months and did not receive intravenous (i.v.) iron during follow‐up. During the first year after HF diagnosis, 19% had persistent ID, 13% developed ID, 11% resolved ID, and 57% never had ID, consequently 24% changed their classification. Anaemia at baseline was the strongest independent predictor of ID 1 year after diagnosis [odds ratio (OR) 3.91, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.88–8.13, P < 0.001], followed by HF hospitalization (OR 2.21, 95% CI 1.24–3.95, P < 0.01), female sex (OR 2.04, 95% CI 1.25–3.32, P < 0.01), HFpEF (OR 1.96, 95% CI 1.13–3.39, P < 0.05), and diabetes mellitus (OR 1.92, 95% CI 1.06–3.48, P < 0.05). ID was associated with low QoL at baseline (MLHFQ score mean difference 7.4 points, 95% CI 3.1–11.7, P < 0.001), but not at follow‐up. Conclusions: About one third of patients with new onset HF had ID both at the time of HF diagnosis and after 1 year, though a quarter of the patients changed their ID status. Patients with anaemia, HF hospitalization, female gender, HFpEF, or diabetes mellitus at baseline were more likely to have ID after 1 year implying that these should be carefully screened for ID to find those in need of i.v. iron treatment. - Abstract
This paper is based on a study of 20 kilo animal bones, which were recovered from an excavation in 1994 in the quarter of Gruvan 3, Jönköping. The purpose of this essay was to investigate changes in animal husbandry and activity, related to animal bones, at the site during the period from AD 1000–1600. Osteological methods have been used to determine age, gender and height of the most common domestic animals, which are cattle (Bos taurus), sheep/goat (Ovis aries/Capra hircus) and pig (Sus domesticus). Some differences have been seen in the distribution of the domestic animals in the material from different time periods. Cattle has been the most common animal followed by sheep/goat and pig. The osteological material has also shown similarities with other materials from medieval Swedish towns based on the age, gender and height of cattle, sheep/goat and pig. The material from the later part of the investigated period has contained an increasing amount of bone fragments from crafting.

AimsExtracellular vesicles (EVs) were investigated as potential biomarkers associated with heart failure (HF) pathophysiology in patients undergoing elective coronary artery bypass surgery characterized by HF phenotype. Materials and methodsPatients with preoperative proxy-diagnoses of HF types i.e., preserved (HFpEF; n = 19) or reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF; n = 20) were studied and compared to patients with normal left ventricular function (n = 42). EVs in plasma samples collected from the coronary sinus, an arterial line, and from the right atrium were analyzed by flow cytometry. We studied EVs of presumed cardiomyocyte origin [EVs exposing Connexin-43 + Caveolin-3 (Con43 + Cav3) and Connexin-43 + Troponin T (Con43 + TnT)], of endothelial origin [EVs exposing VE-Cadherin (VE-Cad)] and EVs exposing inflammatory markers [myeloperoxidase (MPO) or pentraxin3 (PTX3)]. ResultsMedian concentrations of EVs exposing Con43 + TnT and Con43 + Cav3 were approximately five to six times higher in coronary sinus compared to radial artery indicative of cardiac release. Patients with HFrEF had high trans-coronary gradients of both Con43 + TnT and Con43 + Cav3 EVs, whereas HFpEF had elevated gradients of Con43 + Cav3 EVs but lower gradients of Con43 + TnT. Coronary sinus concentrations of both Con43 + TnT and Con43 + Cav3 correlated significantly with echocardiographic and laboratory measures of HF. MPO-EV concentrations were around two times higher in the right atrium compared to the coronary sinus, and slightly higher in HFpEF than in HFrEF. EV concentrations of endothelial origin (VE-Cad) were similar in all three patient groups. ConclusionCon43 + TnT and Con43 + Cav3 EVs are released over the heart indicating cardiomyocyte origin. In HFrEF the EV release profile is indicative of myocardial injury and myocardial stress with elevated trans-coronary gradients of both Con43 + TnT and Con43 + Cav3 EVs, whereas in HFpEF the profile indicates myocardial stress with less myocardial injury.

- Abstract
This paper is a study of the Swedish fornborg Torsburgen on Östergarnslandet, Gotland. This is the largest fornborg on Gotland and it has an area of 112 hectares. The northern, eastern and western parts of the plateau, on which Torsburgen is lying, has natural cliffs of up to 30 meters, while there in the southern part is a two-kilometer-long wall. During the 1980´s a part of the wall was excavated in an attempt to date the construction. The conclusion was, that it had many different building stages. The earliest find was dated to the later Roman Iron Age (AD 200-400) and that period is therefore also the focus of this paper. The aim of this paper is to explain different hypotheses of why this wall was built (for what reason) and what purpose did it fulfill in society. Archaeological finds from Gotland, dated to the period of the later Roman Iron Age, often show connections to the Roman Empire and therefore the construction could be a result of influences from that part of the world. It is however, with today’s knowledge, not possible to point out one specific reason why the wall of Torsburgen was built and for what reason they needed to fortify the area of 112 hectares. It could have been an invading force, but it could just as likely have been a need of a hideout to protect the inhabitants on the island from an invading force. Other hypotheses are that it could have been a place for religious practice or a hideout for exiled people, which some people claim that an episode in the Gotlandic legend Gutasagan is about. Hopefully archaeological finds in the future could lead to new knowledge and maybe result in an answer of why this monument is standing there.

- Abstract
The objective of this study was to explore the stated importance of promoting healthy lifestyle habits (alcohol, eating habits, physical activity and tobacco) by healthcare professionals, and to what extent these attitudes were translated into clinical work. In 2014, healthcare professionals (n = 251) from cardiology departments in two hospitals in Stockholm, Sweden, participated in a cross-sectional descriptive questionnaire-based survey. The questionnaire included topics regarding stated importance and clinical work undertaken to promote healthy lifestyle habits. Personal and organisational factors of potential importance, expectations and future work were also explored. To analyse differences in stated importance and clinical work within and between lifestyle factors, comparisons of proportions were performed with 99% confidence intervals (CI). Relationships between stated importance and clinical work were investigated using logistic regression. The majority of healthcare professionals stated that it was 'very important' to promote healthy lifestyle habits among patients in general (69%-94%) and in their own clinical work (63%-80%). Despite this, always asking questions (18%-41%) or providing counselling (11%-23%) regarding lifestyle habits was reported to be rare. Overall, tobacco cessation was considered the most important behavioural change and was more often included in clinical work compared to promoting physical activity, healthy eating habits and limiting alcohol use. Clinical work was mainly influenced by to what extent the healthcare professional perceived clear organisational routines and objectives. In conclusion, we observed a gap between stated importance and clinical work in the promotion of healthy lifestyle habits among healthcare professionals. There were differences between lifestyle factors, indicating that work with tobacco cessation is the most established. Our results suggest that in order to promote patients' lifestyle habits in line with e, At the time of Amanda Ek's dissertation this article was a manuscript., Ischemisk hjärtsjukdom

23. Si thickness influence on subthreshold currents at high temperatures in FDSOI CMOS

- Abstract
Fully depleted silicon-on-insulator (FDSOI) CMOS with thick buried oxide (BOX) can operate at higher temperatures compared to bulk CMOS. This work demonstrates, both experimentally and through simulations, that the subthreshold characteristics (off-state leakage current, beak and subthreshold swing, SS) are greatly improved at high temperatures by reducing the Si thickness (t(si)) in FDSOI CMOS. Fabricated N and PFET devices exhibit low I-leak < 300 pA/mu m and close to ideal subthreshold swing (SS<132 mV/dec) at 300 degrees C. TCAD simulations closely match measured data and show that electrostatic control of the Si layer is key to achieve close to ideal SS and low I-leak. With proper gate electrodes FDSOI CMOS can achieve an I-off< 1nA/mu m at 300 degrees C for both P and NFETs. This result shows that FDSOI CMOS can find use as low power control logic at high temperatures., Part of proceedings: ISBN 978-1-6654-3745-5QC 20220523

Aim: We present the baseline characteristics of the PREFERS Stockholm epidemiological study on the natural history and course of new onset heart failure (HF) aiming to improve phenotyping focusing on HF with preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (HFpEF) pathophysiology. Methods and results: New onset HF patients diagnosed in hospital or at outpatient HF clinics were included at five Stockholm hospitals 2015–2018 and characterized by N‐terminal pro brain natriuretic peptide (NT‐proBNP), biomarkers, echocardiography, and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (subset). HFpEF [left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) ≥ 50%] was compared with HF with mildly reduced LVEF (HFmrEF; LVEF 41–49%) and with HF with reduced LVEF (HFrEF; LVEF ≤ 40%). We included 547 patients whereof HFpEF (n = 137; 25%), HFmrEF (n = 61; 11%), and HFrEF (n = 349; 64%). HFpEF patients were older (76; 70–81 years; median; interquartile range) than HFrEF (67; 58–74; P < 0.001), more often women (49% vs. 30%; P < 0.001), and had significantly higher comorbidity burden. They more often had atrial fibrillation, hypertension, and renal dysfunction. NT‐proBNP was lower in HFpEF (896; 462–1645 ng/L) than in HFrEF (1160; 563–2370; P = 0.005). In HFpEF, left ventricular (LV) diameters and volumes were smaller (P < 0.001) and septal and posterior wall thickness and relative wall thickness higher (P < 0.001). E/é ≥ 14 was present in 26% of HFpEF vs. 32% of HFrEF (P = 0.017) and left atrial volume index > 34 mL/m2 in 57% vs. 61% (P = 0.040). HFmrEF patients were intermediary between HFpEF and HFrEF for LV mass, LV volumes, and RV volumes but had the highest proportion of left ventricular hypertrophy and the lowest proportion of elevated E/é. Conclusions: Phenotype data in new onset HF patients recruited in a broad clinical setting showed that 25% had HFpEF, were older, more often women, and had greater comorbidity burden. PREFERS is well suited to further explore biomarker and imaging components of HFpEF pathophysiology and may contribute to the emerging knowledge of HF epidemiology. - Abstract
Control of defects at or near the MOS interface is paramount for device performance optimization. The SiC MOS system is known to exhibit two types of MOS defects, defects at the SiO2/SiC interface and defects inside of the gate oxide that can trap channel charge carriers. Differentiating these two types can be challenging. In this work, we use several electrical measurement techniques to extract and separate these two types of defects. The charge pumping method and the ultrafast pulsed I-V method are given focus, as they are independent methods for extracting the defects inside the gate oxide. Defects are extracted from low voltage n-channel MOSFETs with differently processed gate oxides: steam-treatment, dry oxidation and nitridation. Ultrafast pulsed I-V and charge pumping gives comparable results. The presented analysis of the electrical characterization methods is of use for SiC MOSFET process development.

- Abstract
BACKGROUND: In prevention, sedentary behaviour and physical activity have been associated with risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality. Less is known about associations with utilization of hospital care. AIM: To investigate whether physical activity level and sedentary behaviour prior to cardiac ward admission can predict utilization of hospital care and mortality among patients with cardiovascular disease. METHODS: Longitudinal observational study including 1148 patients admitted and treated in cardiac wards in two hospitals. Subjective reports of physical activity levels and sedentary time prior to admission were collected during inpatient care and categorized as low, medium or high. The associations between physical activity level and sedentary time with hospital stay, readmission and mortality were analysed using linear, logistic and Cox regressions. RESULTS: Median hospital stay was 2.1 days. One higher step in the physical activity level, or lower sedentary time, was related to an approximately 0.9 days shorter hospital stay. Sixty per cent of patients were readmitted to hospital. The risk of being readmitted was lower for individuals reporting high physical activity and low sedentary time (odds ratios ranging between 0.44 and 0.91). A total of 200 deaths occurred during the study. Mortality was lower among those with high and medium physical activity levels and low sedentary time (hazard ratios ranging between 0.36 and 0.90). CONCLUSION: Both physical activity level and sedentary time during the period preceding hospitalization for cardiac events were predictors of hospital utilization and mortality. This highlights the prognostic value of assessing patients' physical activity and sedentary behaviour., Ischemisk hjärtsjukdom

High-temperature electronics find use in extreme environments, like data logging in downhole drilling for geothermal energy production, inside of high-temperature turbines, industrial gas sensors and space electronics. The simplest systems use a sensor and a transmitter, but more advance electronic systems would additionally require a microcontroller with memory. Silicon carbide (4H-SiC) integrated circuits target high-temperature electronics, although the current integration level is low due to immature process technology and non-volatile memory has not been demonstrated. SiC CMOS would allow highly dense integrated circuits for microcontrollers and random access memory (RAM). Ferroelectric capacitors could serve as high-temperature non-volatile memory devices. In this work, significant efforts have been taken to develop a SiC CMOS process and ferroelectric capacitors. SiC CMOS is challenging and mostly unexplored technology. A recessed channel transistor design was investigated. Several key challenges in the SiC CMOS process was identified, leading to a polyoxide-based field oxide, a deposited gate-dielectric process, reproducible Ni-Al semi-salicide contacts to p-type SiC, and a high-temperature CMP enabled two-level TiW-based metallisation. Self-aligned cobalt silicide contacts were investigated, and was found to produce low-resistance ohmic contactsto n-type SiC. Inverters and ring oscillators that operate at 200 °C were achieved in this recessed channel SiC CMOS process. It was found that steam-treating the gate oxide interface produced both NMOS and PMOS transistors that could be used for circuits. However, the reliability suffered due to poor PMOS performance. Wafer-level statistical measurements of interface trap density was performed on NMOS transistors treated by steam, dry oxygen and nitrided by nitrous oxide. A deposition and etch process for ferroelectric capacitors, using vanadium-doped bismuth titanate as ferroelectric material, was developed. High-temperature operation was demonstrated, and several scalability challenges for the etched process was identified. The implication of this thesis is that while operational recessed channel SiC CMOS was demonstrated at high temperature, more promising technologies like ion implanted bulk transistors should be investigated instead, due to the numerous difficulties in optimising both NMOS and PMOS with this recessed channel design. The presented recessed channel process technology can be used to fabricate short channel length NMOS-logic. Ferroelectric capacitors is a good candidate for high-temperature non-volatile memory applications, although more work is needed in the CMOS integration. QC 20190428

Digital electronics in SiC find use in high-temperature applications. The objective of this study was to fabricate SiC CMOS without using ion implantation. In this letter, we present a recessed channel CMOS process. Selective doping is achieved by etching epitaxial layers into mesas. A deposited SiO2-film, post-annealed at lowtemperature and re-oxidized in pyrogenic steam, is used as the gate oxide to produce a conformal gate oxide over the non-planar topography. PMOS, NMOS, inverters, and ring oscillators are characterized at 200 °C. The PMOS requires reduced threshold voltage in order to enable long term reliability. This result demonstrates that it is possible to fabricate SiC CMOS without ion implantation and by low-temperature processing., QC 20190428

Abstract Background C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute phase protein that can activate various immune cells and bind to certain Fcγ receptors. The latter may compete with the binding of IgG antibodies to these receptors and could thereby interfere with the antigen-specific immune response. Polymorphisms in the promoter region of the CRP gene have been strongly associated with the plasma concentration of CRP. The known lower susceptibility to malaria in the Fulani ethnic group, as compared to their sympatric neighbours in Africa, has been linked to different genetic backgrounds. The present study was performed to investigate if polymorphisms in the CRP gene could contribute to the lower susceptibility to malaria seen in the Fulani ethnic group. Methods The CRP -717 T>C, -286 C>T>A, and +1444 C>T polymorphisms were analysed in asymptomatic Fulani and non-Fulani individuals from Mali and Sudan using Pyrosequencing T and TaqMan r MGB probes. Results The rare -286 A allele, previously shown to be associated with increased CRP expression and plasma levels, was shown to be more frequent in the non-Fulani ethnic groups as compared to the sympatric Fulani ethnic group both in Mali and Sudan. The common -717 T allele was more prevalent in the non-Fulani ethnic group compared to the sympatric Fulani ethnic group, but only in Mali. The parasite prevalence was increased for the -286 A allele, but not for the -717 T allele. No differences regarding genotype frequency or parasite prevalence were seen for +1444 C>T. Conclusion This study indicate that CRP may play an important role in the immune responses to malaria, and that the -286 C/T/A CRP polymorphism may be a contributing factor to the lower susceptibility to malaria seen in the Fulani.

Background: Ticagrelor is a recommended P2Y
12 receptor inhibitor after acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Its superiority has been suggested to rely on pleiotropic effects beyond platelet inhibition. Experimental studies indicate that ticagrelor may protect from ischemia-reperfusion injury but no data are available from such studies on patients. This study aimed to determine if chronic ticagrelor treatment protects against endothelial ischemia-reperfusion injury in patients with a previous ACS. Methods: Patients with a previous ACS were studied with flow mediated dilatation of the left brachial artery to determine the degree of endothelial ischemia-reperfusion injury before and after discontinuation of ticagrelor treatment, which had been continuous since 1 year. Each patient underwent 3 identical examinations. The first examination (Visit A) was at the end of ticagrelor treatment and the following 2 (Visit B and C) were after cessation of this treatment with an interval of 2 to 4 weeks. Results: Ischemia and reperfusion induced significant impairment of endothelial function at all 3 occasions (absolute decline in flow mediated dilatation 3.0% ± 0.7 at Visit A (P < 0.001), 1.9% ± 0.9 at Visit B (P < 0.05) and 1.9% ± 0.4 at Visit C (P < 0.0001)). However, there was no difference in the degree of endothelial ischemia-reperfusion injury or baseline endothelial function between the visits. Conclusion: Chronic ticagrelor treatment in patients 1 year after an ACS does not protect against endothelial ischaemia-reperfusion injury. Nor is it associated with better basal endothelial function compared to after discontinuation of treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
Most semiconductor devices require low-resistance ohmic contact to p-type doped regions. In this work, we present a semi-salicide process that forms low-resistance contacts (~10-4 Ω cm2) to epitaxially grown p-type (>5×1018 cm-3) 4H-SiC at temperatures as low as 600 °C using rapid thermal processing (RTP). The first step is to self-align the nickel silicide (Ni2Si) at 600 °C. The second step is to deposit aluminium on top of the silicide, pattern it and then perform a second annealing step in the range 500 °C to 700 °C., QC 20181108

Heart failure (HF) management is suboptimal in Sweden despite available evidence-based guidelines. To improve HF treatment, a comprehensive HF management program (4D project) was implemented in the Stockholm County (>2.1 million inhabitants). Design. A standardized care program centralized at five hospital-based HF clinics was implemented in 2014–2017. We registered from 2012 to 2017: (1) numbers of referrals and visits to HF clinics, (2) numbers of hospital admitted patients per million inhabitants, (3) dispensed HF medications after admission, and (4) covariate-adjusted 1-year all-cause mortality or HF readmission. Results. Yearly visits to the five HF outpatient clinics increased 3.4 times from 3,372 to 11,527. Dispensed HF drug prescriptions increased, in particular, for readmitted patients, compared to 2012 (p<.0001). Total number of hospital admitted HF patients as well as new-onset or readmitted HF patients decreased by 16, 13, and 20%, respectively (p <.0001). The combined 1-year mortality or HF readmission over the period was 48% (n = 17,124/35,880) and improved per year (HR 0.98 [0.97–0.99], p <.001) from 2012. Conclusion. A comprehensive standardized care HF management program including expanded HF clinics was associated with improved evidence-based medication, reduced HF hospitalization, and improvement of the combined outcome of 1-year mortality or HF readmission in Stockholm. A self-aligned nickel (Ni) silicide process for n-type Ohmic contacts on 4H-SiC is demonstrated and electrically verified in a wafer-scale device process. The key point is to anneal the contacts in two steps. The process is successfully employed on wafer-level and a contact resistivity below 5×10-6 Ω·cm2 is achieved. The influence of the proposed process on the oxide quality is investigated and no significant effect is observed. The proposed self-aligned technology eliminates the undesirable effects of the lift-off process. Moreover, it is simple, fast, and manufacturable at wafer-scale, which saves time and cost. Signal Processing ,Signalbehandling ,Digital signal processing ,feedback suppression - Abstract
When a speaker is addressing an audience, a PA system consisting of a microphone and a loudspeaker is often used. If the microphone picks up too much of the loudspeaker energy, acoustic feedback in the form of an unwanted characteristic howling can occur. Limes Audio is a software company that specializes in improving sound quality in digital communications, mainly conference telephony, and has developed a reference product, the Magneto mixer, to demonstrate the capability of their software TrueVoice. The company now wishes to expand the field of usage for the Magneto mixer to enable it to work as a microphone mixer in PA scenarios, and for this, a feedback suppression feature is needed. This master’s thesis aims at surveying the market and the literature in the field and specifying the requirements for a feedback suppression feature. Three methods for suppressing howling feedback are evaluated through simulations and compared in terms of maximum stable gain (MSG) and subjective listening experience. The method that performed the best based on these criteria was acoustic feedback cancellation with a 5 Hz frequency shift on the loudspeaker signal. This method makes use of an adaptive filter to model the acoustic feedback path and to remove the feedback component from the microphone signal. In the simulations, the method was able to increase the stable gain by approximately 10 dB while maintaining a good sound quality.

The goal of this study is to research how the digitalization of a table top gameaffects the game and its gameplay. We are researching this by first havingparticipants play chess, and online chess, and the interviewing them about theirexperiences with the both games. The main effects of digitalization are inputcontrols. When digitalizing a table top game, there is one thing that the designercannot control at all, which is, the necessity of input controls. However, thedesign for these controls is up to the designer. When digitalizing a game, therules ted to get enforced by the programming. Mistakes that could be committedin the table top version are no longer possible due to the rule enforcementcaused by the programming. It is also possible to use the digital realm to yourbenefit by adding features such as highlighting in chess, which is only possible inthe digital version. Immersion is also affected by the digitalization; the possiblelack of a visible and present opponent can alter how the players experience thegameplay.

This thesis is part of the Working On Venus (WOV) project. The aim of the project is to design electronics in silicon carbide (SiC) that can withstand the extreme surface environmen of Venus. This thesis investigates some possible computer memory technologies that could survive on the surface of Venus. A memory must be able to function at 460 °C and after a total radiation dose of at least 200 Gy (SiC). This thesis is a literature survey. The thesis covers several Random-Access Memory (RAM) technologies: Static RAM (SRAM), Dynamic RAM (DRAM), Ferroelectric RAM (FeRAM), Magnetic RAM (MRAM), Resistive RAM (RRAM) and Phase Change Memory (PCM). The Electrical Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory, Flash memory and SONOS are also covered. Focus lies on device- and material-physics of the memory cells, and their extreme environment behaviour. This thesis concludes with a discussion on technology options. The technologies are compared for their suitability for extreme environment. The thesis gives a recommendation for which memory technologies should be investigated. The final recommendation is to investigate SRAM, SONOS, FeRAM and RRAM technologies for high temperature applications. EEPROM (eng.
