Abstract: The Pacific ocean-bottom seismometer (OBS) Research into Convecting Asthenosphere (ORCA) experiment deployed two 30-station seismic arrays between 2018 and 2020—a US contribution to the international PacificArray project. The “Young ORCA” array deployed on ∼40 Ma central Pacific seafloor had a ∼68% data recovery rate, whereas the “Old ORCA” array deployed on ∼120 Ma southwest Pacific seafloor had a ∼80% recovery rate. We detail here the seismic data quality, spectral characteristics, and engineering challenges of this experiment. We provide information to assist users of this dataset, including OBS orientations and tables of daily data quality for all channels. Preliminary analysis illustrates the utility of these data for surface- and body-wave seismic imaging.

SUMMARY: We conduct a thorough analysis of seismic and acoustic data purported to be from the so-called 'interstellar meteor' which entered the Earth's atmosphere off the coast of Papua New Guinea on 2014 January 08. Previous work had suggested that this meteor may have been caused by an alien spacecraft burning up in the atmosphere. We conclude that both previously reported seismic signals are spurious—one has characteristics suggesting a local vehicular-traffic-based origin; whilst the other is statistically indistinguishable from the background noise. As such, previously reported localizations based on this data are unreliable. Analysis of acoustic data provides a best-fitting location estimate which is very far ($\sim$ 170 km) from the reported fireball location. Accordingly, we conclude that material recovered from the seafloor and purported to be from this event is almost certainly unrelated to it, and is likely of more mundane (non-interstellar) origin. We review the previously compiled seismic magnitudes for underground nuclear explosions at the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Novaya Zemlya Test Site, and analyze these data in the context of published details about individual tests and official Russian reports of annual cumulative explosive energy release at the test site. We derive relationships between teleseismic body wave magnitudem b and explosive yield Y by predicting the yield of each test usingm b and minimizing the difference between predicted and reported annual cumulative yield. A linear relationship between mb and logY with a slope of 0.82 provides a good fit to the annual total yield, with a root mean square (rms) misfit of 0.095 logY units. A spectral magnitude relationship based on the explosion source model of Mueller and Murphy (1971) with a single-free-parameter provides a slightly better fit. For the 10 tests for which individual yields can be directly deduced from the official reports, the rms misfit of reported yields is less than 0.1 logY units or about 25%. More complex relationships that differentiate between the northern and southern test areas, or take account of variations in the scaled depth of burial, do not provide substantially better fits to the reported yields. Earthquake moment tensors and centroid locations in the catalogue of the Global CMT (gCMT) project, formerly the Harvard CMT project, have become an essential resource for studying active global tectonics, used by many solid-Earth researchers. The catalogue's quality, long duration (1976–present), ease of access and global coverage of earthquakes larger than about Mw 5.5 have transformed our ability to study regional patterns of earthquake locations and focal mechanisms. It also allows researchers to easily identify earthquakes with anomalous mechanisms and depths that stand out from the global or regional patterns, some of which require us to look more closely at accepted interpretations of geodynamics, tectonics or rheology. But, as in all catalogues that are, to some extent and necessarily, produced in a semi-routine fashion, the catalogue may contain anomalies that are in fact errors. Thus, before re-assessing geodynamic, tectonic or rheological understanding on the basis of anomalous earthquake locations or mechanisms in the gCMT catalogue, it is first prudent to check those anomalies are real. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate that necessity in the eastern Himalayas and SE Tibet, where two earthquakes that would otherwise require a radical revision of current geodynamic understanding are shown, in fact, to have gCMT depths (and, in one case, also focal mechanism) that are incorrect. Measurements of fundamental-mode (FM) surface waves along the minor arc are impacted by overtone interference. This interference is primarily due to major-arc overtones for Rayleigh waves and minor-arc overtones for Love waves. In both cases, interference contaminates measurements of phase and amplitude and can introduce bias in seismic images. Here, we use synthetic seismograms computed via normal mode summation to probe how interference can vary as a function of the surface wave group velocities, source mechanism and depth, which control the relative excitation of the FM and overtones, and period. By comparing seismograms that include all overtones to those that include only the FM, we can quantify the interference, i.e. how the presence of the overtones perturbs the FM phase and amplitude. We compare the strength of this interference to calculations of excitation of the overtones and FM. We show that these calculations explain well the varying strength of interference for different source mechanisms and depths. Notably, these calculations illuminate source depths where Love wave overtone excitation is quite low and therefore interference is unusually weak, and depths where Rayleigh wave FM excitation is low and therefore interference is unusually strong. Our analysis also reinforces the dependence of the interference on the FM and overtone group velocities. For Love waves, this results in weak minor-arc overtone interference at long periods and, for continental paths, short periods. For Rayleigh waves, the differing overtone and FM group velocities and the relative excitation of the overtones and FM explain rapid variations in the strength of Rayleigh wave major-arc overtone interference as a function of epicentral distance. We then show that real data are affected by the relative excitation of the FM and overtones. We find that errors in Rayleigh wave phase velocities determined at the EarthScope USArray stations are larger when the ratios of overtone to FM excitation are larger. We also find a dependence of phase velocity error on excitation ratio for Love waves, and we identify the presence of major-arc overtone interference in Love wave measurements. Our results highlight opportunities for more nuanced quality control of surface wave measurements. The relative excitation ratio of the overtones and FM may be a better criterion for event selection than source depth, allowing deeper events that well excite FMs to be included and shallower events with large overtone excitation to be excluded.
