Insights about service improvement in a transit network can be gained by studying transit service reliability. In this paper, a general procedure for constructing a transit service reliability diagnostic (Tsrd) diagram based on a Bayesian network is proposed to automatically build a behavioural model from Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) and Automatic Passenger Counters (APC) data. Our purpose is to discover the variability of transit service attributes and their effects on traveller behaviour. A Tsrd diagram describes and helps to analyse factors affecting public transport by combining domain knowledge with statistical data.

This paper reports on the design, organisation and evaluation of a Semantic Web application designed to deliver a collaborative tagging and navigation system for a digital online museum. The key technical features of our application-called the Virtual Museum of the Pacific-centre on a browsing and retrieval interface based on formal concept analysis, query-extension for text search over a concept lattice, an extensible distributed data model to support collaborative tagging and its Web Services implementation. The objective of the project was to provide a practical demonstrator of an formal concept analysis-based system for browsing museum content, while reporting on its impact to the organisational environment and its relevance among stakeholder groups. This paper presents its key design features, an analysis of our collaboration with the Australian Museum and the results of two independent requirements gathering and usability evaluation sessions. 2012 Springer-Verlag.

In this paper, we describe a distributed systems and Web Services Architecture that supports a content management and collaborative tagging system for a Webbased cultural heritage site. The site uses Formal Concept Analysis to infer semantic associations between objects and drive the navigation of its collection, and we promote an extension of its capability by rendering such functionality via Web Services. The Web Services architecture supports a system called the Virtual Museum of the Pacific – a content and knowledge acquisition tool that permits the machine synthesis of formal concepts and provides a Rich Internet Application in which to display and navigate them. The Web Services also permit the extensible association of digital objects by inducing new attributes and relationships from museum meta-data, and allows for the ability for users and stakeholders to upload, annotate and attach rich media, YouTube or Vimeo links, and voice narratives to the objects. By rendering these capabilities as an open API, we encourage a connected and open approach to the sharing of cultural heritage and provide platform for further research and development – making our application well suited for mobile devices, Web-based mashups, and data exchange between collection databases.

Within the cultural informatics community, there is a strong desire to mine and understand relationships within and among collections of objects. In this paper we describe a case study of applied Formal Concept Analysis to cultural heritage and art collections. We base our inter-disciplinary research on our development of a navigation frame work that drives the Virtual Museum of the Pacific - an FCA-based application that employs a conceptual neighbourhood paradigm for browsing concept lattices. We also utilise a feature called conceptual similarity that allows users to search for similar objects and hence promote knowledge discovery of the objects within the collection. We describe how we can construct a meaningful information space derived from museum documentation while considering complexity and associated performance issues of large formal contexts. We report the resulting lattice structure,user experience and relevance of our FCA-based application in browsing and exploring objects from a cultural domain. Our research is an applied case study of term extraction and context creation based on data-sets from the Australian Museum and Powerhouse Museum collections.

Location-based services feature prominently in many digital ecosystem designs. In this paper we present the design of a mobility digital ecosystem for public transportation and campus area networks. We describe four context-aware applications that encourage users to disclose their location: a public transport passenger tracking application; a route-based car-pooling application; an on-campus location-based social networking 'assistant' and a virtual art-gallery tour guide. The location-based service applications offered are intended to drive users into the digital ecosystem and in so doing they share data about their location. This location data can be used to provide value-added services to the users and optimise overall system behaviour. In this paper, we present the architectures of these four applications and address issues concerning privacy, location-identity and uniform standards developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). Our applications provide environments that encourage individual interaction and engagement that are self-regulating and self-evolving: these are the key characteristics of a digital ecosystem.

This paper describes the Art Collection Ecosystem – an application that allows users to tag and serendipitously browse content using Formal Concept Analysis. Within this application, tags are derived from meta-data of artworks within an existing asset management system and are classified according to theories derived from social tagging behaviour.We present past and recent iterations of its design, where it is evaluated as a contextual comparison to a popular image tagging application, Flickr. Through the process of iterative design and user evaluation, we produce results are of interest to any applied research and development that involves the exploration of digital library content using concept lattices.

The Virtual Museum of the Pacific is a social media platform for a digital ecosystem, which enables a variety of user communities to engage with the Pacific Collection of the Australian Museum. The success of the system depends on facilitating the development of culturally relevant folksonomies and encouraging a conversation between online communities. In this paper we explore the relationships between stakeholders, folksonomy and taxonomy, to reveal the design strategies which inform this digital ecosystem. Our analysis defines the scope for the social tagging component of our information model and discusses how users might interact with objects (in terms of their knowledge base) and also contribute to ongoing taxonomic definitions. Given its capacity to span both collection management and community access issues, we contend that the Virtual Museum of the Pacific is a significant model for online community interaction in the contemporary museum environment.

Interoperability in healthcare is a requirement for effective communication between entities, to ensure timely access to up to-date patient information and medical knowledge, and thus facilitate consistent patient care. An interoperability framework called the Health Service Bus (HSB), based on the Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) middleware software architecture is presented here as a solution to all three levels of interoperability as defined by the HL7 EHR Interoperability Work group in their definitive white paper “Coming to Terms”. A prototype HSB system was implemented based on the Mule Open-Source ESB and is outlined and discussed, followed by a clinically-based example.

Interoperability between health informatics standards enables new best-ofbreed solutions to evolve from legacy health information systems, and enables a healthcare data model to evolve and be enriched. In this paper we show that a lightweight XSLT framework can be used to achieve interoperability between HL7 versions 2 and 3 and HL7 version 3 and OpenEHR. We present the necessary transformations between terminology and structure in these standards as an exercise in ontology mapping. We discuss our experience with respect to clinical observation messaging.

The Australian Museum's ethnographic collection consists of 110,000 objects from Indigenous Australia (33%); Pacific (50%) and Asia, Africa and the Americas (17%). The Pacific islands collection comprises approximately 60,000 objects and is the largest collection in an Australian public museum. This Collection is of international importance to several communities with complementary interests:-Indigenous communities have a specific interest in preserving and strengthening their cultural heritage both in the host countries and wherever the communities have migrated to. -For anthropologists access to collections, regardless of location, is key to the understanding and preservation of artefacts of many geographically dispersed collections. -The general public can learn from and contribute to the body of knowledge which will develop from having an active online community..Coming from this perspective, the Australian Museum is developing tools for unlocking this collection. The Virtual Museum of the Pacific (VMP) is one such initiative. VMP is an innovative tool based on qualitative, collection database content to navigate through the AM's Pacific Collections and thus increase access. The pilot project due for completion in October 2009 trials the application of concept lattices to the navigation, display and annotation of an initial 400 objects from Australian Museums Pacific Collections. The presentation will showcase this project and explore broader issues including tagging and annotating, user generated content by the broader Pacific creator and diasporic communities and Intellectual Property issues.

The Virtual Museum of the Pacific is a Digital Ecosystem that engages members of several communities, each with their own ontological relationships with the Pacific Collection of the Australian Museum. The Virtual Museum of the Pacific is intended to support on-line community interaction using social-media technologies to extend the annotation of objects to suit the stakeholder’s own needs. The success of the system depends on leveraging the diffusion of language and encouraging a conversation between on-line communities. In this paper we explore the relationships between stakeholders, folksonomy and taxonomy, to reveal the design forces on our digital ecosystem. Our analysis defines the scope for the social tagging component that progresses the design of our data model and gives us some confidence that we are capturing the right data for the system’s development into the future.

SearchSleuth is a program developed to experiment with the automated local analysis of Web search using formal concept analysis. SearchSleuth extends a standard search interface to include a conceptual neighborhood centered on a formal concept derived from the initial query. This neighborhood of the concept derived from the search terms is deco- rated with its upper and lower neighbors representing more general and specialized concepts respectively. In SearchSleuth, the notion of related categories which are themselves formal concepts is also introduced. This allows the retrieval focus to shift to a new formal concept called a sibling. This movement across the concept lattice needs to relate one formal concept to another in a principled way. This paper presents the issues concerning exploring and ordering the space of related categories.

Healthcare information is composed of many types of varying and heterogeneous data. Semantic interoperability in healthcare is especially important when all these different types of data need to interact. Presented in this paper is a solution to interoperability in healthcare based on a standards-based middleware software architecture used in enterprise solutions. This architecture has been translated into the healthcare domain using a messaging and modeling standard which upholds the ideals of the Semantic Web (HL7 V3) combined with a well-known standard terminology of clinical terms (SNOMED CT).

he paper presents a new border algorithm for making the covering relation of concepts explicit for iceberg concept lattices. The border algorithm requires no information from the formal context relying only on the formal concept set in order to explicitly state the covering relation between formal concepts. Empirical testing is performed to compare the border algorithm with a traditional algorithm based on the Covering Edges algorithm from Concept Data Analysis.

This paper investigates the scalability of applying Formal Concept Analysis to large data sets. In particular we present enhancements based on an existing spatial data structure, the RD-Tree, to better support both specific use with Formal Concept Analysis as well as generic multidimensional applications. This paper describes the first hand experiences of the electronic point of care (ePOC) project team and the project management and research and development issues that emerged over the course of a collaborative 3 year eHealth project. The paper highlights that despite the best of intentions by project managers, researchers and developers, a technologically innovative concept is no guarantee of project success. Issues beyond the project team's control that occurred during the life of the ePOC project included industry partner restructures, changes in data feeder systems and evolving health messaging standards. A series of proactive mitigation strategies deployed by the project team illustrate how the process of adopting a dynamic systems project management approach can help address unforeseen issues as they arise and derive maximum benefits to all stakeholders.
