Flash radiography of large hydrodynamic experiments driven by high explosives is a diagnostic method in use at many laboratories. A major contributor to the practical resolution obtained by this point-projection technique is the size of the source spot. A variety of techniques for measuring spot size are in use at the different laboratories, as are different definitions of spot size. Additional metrics in common use at Los Alamos National Laboratory are considered here, and compared with those previously discussed in J. Opt. Soc.

The new Scorpius linear induction electron accelerator is under development for multi-pulse flash radiography of large, explosively-driven hydrodynamic experiments. Beam physics from the cathode to the target was examined with computer simulations, including envelope, ray-trace, and particle-in cell (PIC) codes. Beam instabilities investigated included beam breakup (BBU), image displacement, diocotron, parametric envelope, ion hose, and the resistive wall instability. Beam corkscrew motion and emittance growth from beam mismatch were also studied. The results of these simulations is documented in a series of reports. In this report the computer codes and physical models used for these simulations are described. The conclusion of this study is that Scorpius will produce and accelerate a beam with radiographic quality equivalent to the present accelerators at Los Alamos National Laboratory if the same engineering standards and construction details are upheld.

Scorpius is a new multi-pulse linear induction accelerator (LIA). It is presently planned for Scorpius to accelerate four 2-kA electron pulses to 20 MeV from an injected energy of 2 MeV. The goal of Scorpius is to deliver a multi-pulse electron beam with quality sufficient for use in flash radiography of large-scale explosively-driven experiments. Beam physics has a profound effect on the quality of multi-pulse radiographs. Beam halo or asymmetry causes emittance growth, which enlarges spot size, thereby degrading resolution. Beam centroid motion due to instabilities is especially problematic. High-frequency motion blurs the radiographic spot size, thereby degrading resolution. Low-frequency motion causes pulse-to-pulse wandering of the source spot, thereby degrading registration of successive radiographs. We use a wide range of tools to investigate potential beam physics problems associated with Scorpius. In addition to analytic theory and experimental data from our operational LIAs, we use a number of reliable beam dynamics computer codes. These include both beam envelope and particle in cell (PIC) codes.

The Dual-Axis Radiography for Hydrodynamic Testing (DARHT) facility at Los Alamos was developed for flash radiography of large hydrodynamic experiments.Both axes now routinely produce radiographic source spot sizes having full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) less than 1 mm. The beam canonical angular momentum contributes to spot size, and it is minimized by using a shielded source of electrons.An ideal shielded source creates the beam in a region where the axial magnetic field is zero, thus the canonical momentum is also zero, since the beam is born with no mechanical angular momentum.It then follows from Busch's theorem that the canonical angular momentum is minimized at the target, at least in principal. In the DARHT accelerators, the axial magnetic field at the cathode is minimized by using a solenoid with reverse polarity to cancel out whatever solenoidal beam transport field exists there. This is imperfect in practice, because of radial variation of the total field across the cathode surface, solenoid misalignments, and long-term variability of solenoid fields for given currents. This article quantifies the relative importance of canonical momentum in determining the focal spot, and establishes a systematic methodology for tuning the bucking coils for minimum spot size.

The 74-cell DARHT-II long-pulse linear induction accelerator (LIA) was commissioned in its final configuration in 2007-2008. The final accelerated beam parameters were 2 kA, and greater than 17 MeV in a pulse flat to better than +/- 1% for more than 1.6 micro-s. This report details the tuning of the LIA, diagnostics used, and measurements of the beam parameters.

The Dual-Axis Radiographic Hydrotest (DARHT) facility uses bremsstrahlung radiation source spots produced by the focused electron beams from two linear induction accelerators (LIAs) to radiograph large hydrodynamic experiments driven by high explosives. Radiographic resolution is determined by the size of the source spot, and beam emittance is the ultimate limitation to spot size. Some of the possible causes for the emittance growth in the DARHT LIA have been investigated using particle-in-cell (PIC) codes, and are discussed in this article. The results suggest that the most likely source of emittance growth is a mismatch of the beam to the magnetic transport, which can cause beam halo.

Using a particle-in-cell (PIC) code, we investigated the possibilities for emittance growth through the quadrupole magnets of the system used to transport the high-current electron beam from an induction accelerator to the bremsstrahlung converter target used for flash radiography. We found that even highly mismatched beams exhibited little emittance growth (< 6%), which we attribute to softening of their initial hard edge current distributions. We also used this PIC code to evaluate the accuracy of emittance measurements using a solenoid focal scan following the quadrupole magnets. If the beam is round after the solenoids, the simulations indicate that the measurement is highly accurate, but it is substantially inaccurate for elliptical beams.

The dual-axis radiography for hydrodynamic testing (DARHT) facility at Los Alamos National Laboratory uses two electron linear-induction accelerators (LIA) to produce the source spots for perpendicular flash radiographs of a dynamic experiment.Manipulating the beam current is a means for adjusting the dose, and one way to do this is to change the size of the cathode. This article describes simulations undertaken to develop scaling laws for use as design tools in changing the Axis-1 beam current by changing the cathode size.

Beam dynamics issues are assessed for a new linear induction electron accelerator being designed for flash radiography of large explosively driven hydrodynamic experiments. Special attention is paid to equilibrium beam transport, possible emittance growth, and beam stability. It is concluded that a radiographic quality beam will be produced possible if engineering standards and construction details are equivalent to those on the present radiography accelerators at Los Alamos.
