Abstract

Big data provides researchers with valuable sources of information for studying demographic behavior in the population. One such source is the texts posted by social network users on various demographic issues. This study utilizes methods for automatically extracting user opinions from the “VKontakte” social network. The extracted texts are then classified using the Conversational RuBERT neural network model to investigate opinions related to reproductive behavior in the population. The classification process addresses two consecutive problems. Firstly, it aims to identify whether a user’s comment contains argumentation. Secondly, if an argument is present, it seeks to determine its type within the context of the “personal-public” dichotomy. To search for arguments and classify their types, six experiments were conducted, varying the dataset and the number of classes. The method employed for automatic extraction and classification of user opinions on the “VKontakte” social network has demonstrated the ability to accurately classify users’ comments, identifying the presence of argumentation and categorizing the arguments within the “personal-public” dichotomy. This enables the identification of personal and social attitudes, values, stories, and opinions, thus facilitating the study of reproductive behavior.

2. Gut Bacteriomes and Ecological Niche Divergence: An Example of Two Cryptic Gastropod Species

Abstract

Symbiotic microorganisms may provide their hosts with abilities critical to their occupation of microhabitats. Gut (intestinal) bacterial communities aid animals to digest substrates that are either innutritious or toxic, as well as support their development and physiology. The role of microbial communities associated with sibling species in the hosts’ adaptation remains largely unexplored. In this study, we examined the composition and plasticity of the bacteriomes in two sibling intertidal gastropod species, Littorina fabalis and L. obtusata, which are sympatric but differ in microhabitats. We applied 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding and shotgun sequencing to describe associated microbial communities and their spatial and temporal variation. A significant drop in the intestinal bacteriome diversity was revealed during the cold season, which may reflect temperature-related metabolic shifts and changes in snail behavior. Importantly, there were significant interspecies differences in the gut bacteriome composition in summer but not in autumn. The genera Vibrio, Aliivibrio, Moritella and Planktotalea were found to be predominantly associated with L. fabalis, while Granulosicoccus, Octadecabacter, Colwellia, Pseudomonas, Pseudoalteromonas and Maribacter were found to be mostly associated with L. obtusata. Based on these preferential associations, we analyzed the metabolic pathways’ enrichment. We hypothesized that the L. obtusata gut bacteriome contributes to decomposing algae and detoxifying polyphenols produced by fucoids. Thus, differences in the sets of associated bacteria may equip their closely phylogenetically related hosts with a unique ability to occupy specific micro-niches.

5. Value of statistical life in Russia based on microdata

Abstract

Value of statistical life (VSL) is a widely used instrument for risk monetizing towards public policy planning in many developed countries. In Russia, due to the lack of data required for calculations, there are practically no credible estimates comparable in terms of methodology used, while those that are obtained using a different methodology hereupon differ significantly in magnitude. In our research, the value of statistical life in Russia is estimated using the comparable to foreign studies’ methodology, based on the RLMS-HSE survey microdata, the Russian (Rosstat) data, and the U.S. (BLS CFOI) data on occupational risks for 2018. The basic idea of this approach is to determine the willingness of employees to accept compensation for occupational risk. The resulting estimates of the VSL are in the range from 366,2 to 497,6 million rubles (2018). These values are significantly higher than all available estimates for Russia obtained using a different methodology but comparable to the corresponding values calculated with a similar methodology for the United States, considering the difference in GDP per capita at PPP.

6. Value of statistical life in Russia: Estimates based on panel microdata for 2010–2020

Abstract

The novelty of this research is that there are provided first estimates of the value of statistical life in Russia, considering wage differential for occupational risks, based on the analysis of panel data (2010–2020). The resulting estimates of VSL in Russia adjusted for two‐way effects are in the range of 231.7 and 288.3 mln rubles that are considerably lower than ones obtained with pooled regression (397 mln) and between‐estimator (420.6 mln) and comparable with corresponding values for the USA (11.4–11.6 mln US dollars).

7. Does the value of human life in Russia increase with age and higher levels of education?

Abstract

Estimates of the value of life, reflecting society’s preferences regarding the choice between safety and money, are key indicators for state management in areas such as healthcare, transport, demographic policy, and environmental protection. This article is a logical continuation of the previous research presenting the initial estimates of the value of life in Russia based on analysis of the revealed preferences about employment in industries associated with high fatality risks. In addition to the previous results, this study provides a new theoretical model explaining the logic of choosing employment considering fatality risks and offers estimates of the value of life across educational and age groups. The empirical part of the paper is based on the RLMS HSE data for the period from 2010 to 2020; the author uses panel regression with random effects. The analysis shows that the average value of life in Russia is 287 million rubles, varying from 241 to 450 million rubles depending on levels of education achieved, and considering age value of life ranges from 329 to 349 million rubles (in those groups for which estimates are significant). Possible explanations for this variability are related to the human capital factor, which changes with age and education level. At the same time, the impact of human capital on the value of life can be both positive and negative.

8. POSSIBILITIES FOR RISK ASSESSING IN PATIENTS WITH ACUTE CORONARY SYNDROME OLDER THAN 75 YEARS

Abstract

The aim of the study was to assess the possibility of using risk assessment scales for adverse outcomes in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) of older age groups. Materials and methods. The study included 988 patients with ACS who were followed up within 1 year after discharge from the hospital as part of the ORACLE II study. The average age of patients was 61.7±4.22 years, 582 (58.9%) men, 405 (40.1%) women. Results of the study: Within 1 year of observation, death from any causes was recorded in 52 (8.2%) patients younger than 75 years old and in 89 (26.6%) patients older than 74 years; coronary outcomes - in 80 patients (12.4%) under the age of 75 years and in 80 patients (23.3%) aged 75 years and older. Any adverse outcome, including atherothrombotic events and bleeding, was recorded during the year in 148 (43.1%) patients of the older age group and in 211 (32.7%) patients under 75 years of age. In patients younger than 75 years, when predicting the risk of death using the GRACE risk score, the area under the ROC curve was 0.794, in the group of patients over 75 years old it was only 0.575, which indicates a low diagnostic value. Similar data were obtained regarding the risk of coronary events. The Russian RECORD scale had the best predictive ability with respect to the prognosis of mortality in patients older than 75 years. the area under the ROC curve was 0.691, as well as in predicting repeated ischemic events in both subgroups. Conclusions: widely used scales for assessing the prognosis of mortality and recurring ischemic events, which well predict the prognosis in patients under 75 years of age in a group of patients older than 75 years have low prognostic value. The highest score in the older age group may have a risk score scale RECORD.

Abstract

BACKGROUND There were gaps between guidelines and practice when surgery was the only treatment for aortic stenosis (AS). OBJECTIVES This study analyzed the decision to intervene in patients with severe AS in the EORP VHD (EURObservational Research Programme Valvular Heart Disease) II survey. METHODS Among 2,152 patients with severe AS, 1,271 patients with high-gradient AS who were symptomatic fulfilled a Class I recommendation for intervention according to the 2012 European Society of Cardiology guidelines; the primary end point was the decision for intervention. RESULTS A decision not to intervene was taken in 262 patients (20.6%). In multivariate analysis, the decision not to intervene was associated with older age (odds ratio [OR]: 1.34 per 10-year increase; 95% CI: 1.11 to 1.61; P = 0.002), New York Heart Association functional classes I and II versus III (OR: 1.63; 95% CI: 1.16 to 2.30; P = 0.005), higher age adjusted Charlson comorbidity index (OR: 1.09 per 1-point increase; 95% CI: 1.01 to 1.17; P = 0.03), and a lower transaortic mean gradient (OR: 0.81 per 10-mm Hg decrease; 95% CI: 0.71 to 0.92; P < 0.001). During the study period, 346 patients (40.2%, median age 84 years, median EuroSCORE II [European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation II] 3.1%) underwent transcatheter intervention and 515 (59.8%, median age 69 years, median EuroSCORE II 1.5%) underwent surgery. A decision not to intervene versus intervention was associated with lower 6-month survival (87.4%; 95% CI: 82.0 to 91.3 vs 94.6%; 95% CI: 92.8 to 95.9; P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS A decision not to intervene was taken in 1 in 5 patients with severe symptomatic AS despite a Class I recommendation for intervention and the decision was particularly associated with older age and combined comorbidities. Abstract

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder with a prevalence of 1/200-1/500 in the general population. The aim of the study was to assess the specific features of coronary angiography in young patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and FH diagnosed using Dutch Lipid Clinic Network (I) and Simone Broome Register (II) criteria. 224 pts with early onset of ACS who underwent coronary angiography were selected (≤ 55 years of age for men and ≤ 60 years of age for women). Two, three vessel disease/left coronary artery (LCA) impairment was observed in 12 of 13 (92,3%) pts with definite/possible FH (I, p=0,036) and in 28 of 29 (96,6%) pts with probable FH (II, p=0,001). In patients with family history of cardiovascular disease three ves-sel disease or LCA impairment was observed in 54 of 73 (74%) pts (p=0,024). Comparing two groups of patients with LDL over and below 4,6 mmol/l (the concentration was obtained by ROC analysis) it was shown that 20 of 29 (69%) and 58 of 144 (40,3%) pts (p=0,036) respectively had culprit vessel thrombosis. Thus, we can suppose that in pts with higher LDL level atherosclerotic plaque rupture is observed more frequently in case of ACS. Therefore, it has been shown that multivessel and LCA stem impairment in young patients with ACS and FH is associated with both main factors used for not genetic FH diagnosis: high LDL cholesterol level and family history of cardiovascular disease.
