Cancer, a global health threat, demands effective diagnostic solutions to combat its impact on public health, particularly for breast, colon, and lung cancers. Early and accurate diagnosis is essential for successful treatment, prompting the rise of Computer-Aided Diagnosis Systems as reliable and cost-effective tools. Histopathology, renowned for its precision in cancer imaging, has become pivotal in the diagnostic landscape of breast, colon, and lung cancers. However, while deep learning models have been widely explored in this domain, they often face challenges in generalizing to diverse clinical settings and in efficiently capturing both local and global feature representations, particularly for multi-class tasks. This underscores the need for models that can reduce biases, improve diagnostic accuracy, and minimize error susceptibility in cancer classification tasks. To this end, we introduce ResoMergeNet (RMN), an advanced deep-learning model designed for both multi-class and binary cancer classification using histopathological images of breast, colon, and lung. ResoMergeNet integrates the Resboost mechanism which enhances feature representation, and the ConvmergeNet mechanism which optimizes feature extraction, leading to improved diagnostic accuracy. Comparative evaluations against state-of-the-art models show ResoMergeNet's superior performance. Validated on the LC-25000 and BreakHis (400× and 40× magnifications) datasets, ResoMergeNet demonstrates outstanding performance, achieving perfect scores of 100 % in accuracy, sensitivity, precision, and F1 score for binary classification. For multi-class classification with five classes from the LC25000 dataset, it maintains an impressive 99.96 % across all performance metrics. When applied to the BreakHis dataset, ResoMergeNet achieved 99.87 % accuracy, 99.75 % sensitivity, 99.78 % precision, and 99.77 % F1 score at 400× magnification. At 40× magnification, it still delivered robust results with 98.85 % accuracy, sensitivity, precision, and F1 score. These results emphasize the efficacy of ResoMergeNet, marking a substantial advancement in diagnostic and prognostic systems for breast, colon, and lung cancers. In image segmentation for medical image analysis, effective upsampling is crucial for recovering spatial information lost during downsampling. This challenge becomes more pronounced when dealing with diverse medical image modalities, which can significantly impact model performance. Plain and standard skip connections, widely used in most models, often fall short of maintaining high segmentation accuracy across different modalities, because essential spatial information transferred from the encoder to the decoder is lost. Inspired by these limitations, the Attention-Embedded Deep UNet (ATEDU-Net) is presented here, an innovative framework designed and tested on diverse medical image modalities, including X-ray, breast ultrasound, and retinal fundus images. ATEDU-Net features a unique architecture that combines progressive context refinement modules (PCRM) and global context modules (GCM) within a U-shaped network structure with Convgroup blocks which facilitate the integration of convolutional operations. This allows ATEDU-Net to autonomously capture rich spatial details and crucial contextual information from input images. The GCM captures essential contextual information for informed decision-making, while the PCRM enhances feature attention, resulting in precise and robust segmentation. The experimentation and analysis demonstrate that ATEDU-Net promises to be a powerful tool for medical professionals, aiding in the early detection of chest-related diseases, accurate localization of breast tumors, and early identification of eye diseases. This, in turn, contributes significantly to the formulation of optimal therapeutic strategies, enhancing patient care and outcomes. Liver disease diagnosis is pivotal for effective patient management, and machine learning techniques have shown promise in this domain. In this study, we investigate the impact of Polynomial-SHapley Additive exPlanations analysis on enhancing the performance and interpretability of machine learning models for liver disease classification. Our results demonstrate significant improvements in accuracy, precision, recall, F1_score, and Matthews correlation coefficient across various algorithms when polynomial- SHapley Additive exPlanations analysis is applied. Specifically, the Light Gradient Boosting Machine model achieves exceptional performance with 100 % accuracy in both scenarios. Furthermore, by comparing the results obtained with and without the approach, we observe substantial differences in the performance, highlighting the importance of incorporating Polynomial-SHapley Additive exPlanations analysis for improved model performance. The Polynomial features and SHapley Additive exPlanations values also enhance the interpretability of machine learning models by capturing complex feature interactions, enabling users to gain deeper insights into the underlying mechanisms driving the diagnosis. Moreover, data rebalancing using Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique and parameter tuning were employed to optimize the performance of the models. Public safety is a critical concern, typically addressed through security checks at entrances of public places, involving trained officers or X-ray scanning machines to detect prohibited items. However, many places like hospitals, schools, and event centres lack such resources, risking security breaches. Even with X-ray scanners or manual checks, gaps can be exploited by individuals with malicious intent, posing significant security risks. Additionally, traditional methods, relying on manual inspections and conventional image processing techniques, are often inefficient and prone to high error rates. To mitigate these risks, we propose a real-time detection model - EnhanceNet using a customized Scale-Enhanced Pooling Network (SEP-Net) integrated into the YOLOv4. The innovative SEP-Net enhances feature representation and localization accuracy, significantly contributing to the model's efficacy in detecting prohibited items. We annotated a custom dataset of nine classes and evaluated our models using different input sizes (608 and 416). The 608 input size achieved a mean Average Precision (mAP) of 74.10% with a detection speed of 22.3 Frames per Second (FPS). The 416 input size showed superior performance, achieving a mAP of 76.75% and a detection speed of 27.1 FPS. These demonstrate that our models are accurate and efficient, making them suitable for real-time applications.

The UNet architecture, which is widely used for biomedical image segmentation, has limitations like blurred feature maps and over- or under-segmented regions. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel network architecture called MACCoM (Multiple Attention and Convolutional Cross-Mixer) - an end-to-end depthwise encoder-decoder fully convolutional network designed for binary and multi-class biomedical image segmentation built upon deeperUNet. We proposed a multi-scope attention module (MSAM) that allows the model to attend to diverse scale features, preserving fine details and high-level semantic information thus useful at the encoder-decoder connection. As the depth increases, our proposed spatial multi-head attention (SMA) is added to facilitate inter-layer communication and information exchange, enabling the network to effectively capture long-range dependencies and global context. MACCoM is also equipped with a convolutional cross-mixer we proposed to enhance the feature extraction capability of the model. By incorporating these modules, we effectively combine semantically similar features and reduce artifacts during the early stages of training. Experimental results on 4 biomedical datasets crafted from 3 datasets of varying modalities consistently demonstrate that MACCoM outperforms or matches state-of-the-art baselines in the segmentation tasks. With Breast Ultrasound Image (BUSI), MACCoM recorded 99.06 % Jaccard, 77.58 % Dice, and 93.92 % Accuracy, while recording 99.50 %, 98.44 %, and 99.29 % respectively for Jaccard, Dice, and Accuracy on the Chest X-ray (CXR) images used. The Jaccard, Dice, and Accuracy for the High-Resolution Fundus (HRF) images are 95.77 %, 74.35 %, and 95.95 % respectively. Aiming at early detection and accurate prediction of cardiovascular disease (CVD) to reduce mortality rates, this study focuses on the development of an intelligent predictive system to identify individuals at risk of CVD. The primary objective of the proposed system is to combine deep learning models with advanced data mining techniques to facilitate informed decision-making and precise CVD prediction. This approach involves several essential steps, including the preprocessing of acquired data, optimized feature selection, and disease classification, all aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of the system. The chosen optimal features are fed as input to the disease classification models and into some Machine Learning (ML) algorithms for improved performance in CVD classification. The experiment was simulated in the Python platform and the evaluation metrics such as accuracy, sensitivity, and F1_score were employed to assess the models' performances. The ML models (Extra Trees (ET), Random Forest (RF), AdaBoost, and XG-Boost) classifiers achieved high accuracies of 94.35%, 97.87%, 96.44%, and 99.00%, respectively, on the test set, while the proposed CardioVitalNet (CVN) achieved 87.45% accuracy. These results offer valuable insights into the process of selecting models for medical data analysis, ultimately enhancing the ability to make more accurate diagnoses and predictions.

Interpretable machine learning models are instrumental in disease diagnosis and clinical decision-making, shedding light on relevant features. Notably, Boruta, SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations), and BorutaShap were employed for feature selection, each contributing to the identification of crucial features. These selected features were then utilized to train six machine learning algorithms, including LR, SVM, ETC, AdaBoost, RF, and LR, using diverse medical datasets obtained from public sources after rigorous preprocessing. The performance of each feature selection technique was evaluated across multiple ML models, assessing accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score metrics. Among these, SHAP showcased superior performance, achieving average accuracies of 80.17%, 85.13%, 90.00%, and 99.55% across diabetes, cardiovascular, statlog, and thyroid disease datasets, respectively. Notably, the LGBM emerged as the most effective algorithm, boasting an average accuracy of 91.00% for most disease states. Moreover, SHAP enhanced the interpretability of the models, providing valuable insights into the underlying mechanisms driving disease diagnosis. This comprehensive study contributes significant insights into feature selection techniques and machine learning algorithms for disease diagnosis, benefiting researchers and practitioners in the medical field. Further exploration of feature selection methods and algorithms holds promise for advancing disease diagnosis methodologies, paving the way for more accurate and interpretable diagnostic models.

Recent research indicates that early detection of breast cancer (BC) is critical in achieving favorable treatment outcomes and reducing the mortality rate associated with it. With the difficulty in obtaining a balanced dataset that is primarily sourced for the diagnosis of the disease, many researchers have relied on data augmentation techniques, thereby having varying datasets with varying quality and results. The dataset we focused on in this study is crafted from SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP)-augmentation and random augmentation (RA) approaches to dealing with imbalanced data. This was carried out on the Wisconsin BC dataset and the effectiveness of this approach to the diagnosis of BC was checked using six machine-learning algorithms. RA synthetically generated some parts of the dataset while SHAP helped in assessing the quality of the attributes, which were selected and used for the training of the models. The result from our analysis shows that the performance of the models used generally increased to more than 3% for most of the models using the dataset obtained by the integration of SHAP and RA. Additionally, after diagnosis, it is important to focus on providing quality care to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients. The need for proper management of the disease state is crucial so as to reduce the recurrence of the disease and other associated complications. According to the World Health Organization, an estimate of more than five million infections and 355,000 deaths have been recorded worldwide since the emergence of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Various researchers have developed interesting and effective deep learning frameworks to tackle this disease. However, poor feature extraction from the Chest X-ray images and the high computational cost of the available models impose difficulties to an accurate and fast Covid-19 detection framework. Thus, the major purpose of this study is to offer an accurate and efficient approach for extracting COVID-19 features from chest X-rays that is also less computationally expensive than earlier research. To achieve the specified goal, we explored the Inception V3 deep artificial neural network. This study proposed LCSB-Inception; a two-path (L and AB channel) Inception V3 network along the first three convolutional layers. The RGB input image is first transformed to CIE LAB coordinates (L channel which is aimed at learning the textural and edge features of the Chest X-Ray and AB channel which is aimed at learning the color variations of the Chest X-ray images). The L achromatic channel and the AB channels filters are set to 50%L-50%AB. This method saves between one-third and one-half of the parameters in the divided branches. We further introduced a global second-order pooling at the last two convolutional blocks for more robust image feature extraction against the conventional max-pooling. The detection accuracy of the LCSB-Inception is further improved by employing the Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) image enhancement technique on the input image before feeding them to the network. The proposed LCSB-Inception network is experimented on using two loss functions (Categorically smooth loss and categorically Cross-entropy) and two learning rates whereas Accuracy, Precision, Sensitivity, Specificity F1-Score, and AUC Score were used for evaluation via the chestX-ray-15k (Data_1) and COVID-19 Radiography dataset (Data_2). The proposed models produced an acceptable outcome with an accuracy of 0.97867 (Data_1) and 0.98199 (Data_2) according to the experimental findings. Chest X-ray (CXR) is becoming a useful method in the evaluation of coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19). Despite the global spread of COVID-19, utilizing a computer-aided diagnosis approach for COVID-19 classification based on CXR images could significantly reduce the clinician burden. There is no doubt that low resolution, noise and irrelevant annotations in chest X-ray images are a major constraint to the performance of AI-based COVID-19 diagnosis. While a few studies have made huge progress, they underestimate these bottlenecks. In this study, we propose a super-resolution-based Siamese wavelet multi-resolution convolutional neural network called COVID-SRWCNN for COVID-19 classification using chest X-ray images. Concretely, we first reconstruct high-resolution (HR) counterparts from low-resolution (LR) CXR images in order to enhance the quality of the dataset for improved performance of our model by proposing a novel enhanced fast super-resolution convolutional neural network (EFSRCNN) to capture texture details in each given chest X-ray image. Exploiting a mutual learning approach, the HR images are passed to the proposed Siamese wavelet multi-resolution convolutional neural network to learn the high-level features for COVID-19 classification. We validate the proposed COVID-SRWCNN model on public-source datasets, achieving accuracy of 98.98%. Our screening technique achieves 98.96% AUC, 99.78% sensitivity, 98.53% precision, and 98.86% specificity. Owing to the fact that COVID-19 chest X-ray datasets are low in quality, experimental results show that our proposed algorithm obtains up-to-date performance that is useful for COVID-19 screening.
