Abstract

Several experimental studies are conducted to explain the eight-beam five-cavity S-band multiple-beam klystron (MBK) with a 6% bandwidth and 3.2 GHz center frequency. The device is shown to be highly accurate and efficient and hence can be used in hardware implementation.

Abstract

The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) is an accelerator-based neutron source being built in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, by the U.S. Department of Energy. The SNS will provide the most intense pulsed neutron beams in the world for scientific research and industrial development. CPI is supporting the effort by providing 550 kW pulsed klystrons for the superconducting portion of the accelerator. A total of 73 units are on order. The primary output power requirements are 550 kW peak, 49.5 kW average at 805 MHz, with an electron beam-to-rf conversion efficiency of 65% and an rf gain of 50 dB. Abstract

The purpose of this program was to develop two advanced development model high power amplifier tubes specifically for troposcatter communication application. Varian Associates was awarded a single contract to develop a klystron model tube and a klystrode model tube. Critical elements of the specification for the two tubes were (a) power output l0xw, (b) 10 MHz electronics bandwidth, (c) 750-980 MHz tuning range and (d) efficiency 50%. The challenge for the klystron design was to be able to maintain efficiency in excess of 50% over the full 10 MHz bandwidth. This was accomplished with an eight cavity design. The klystrode challenge required designing a new grid shape that integrates a converging electron beam with a cavity with a minimal magnetic field focusing. Results of the program were that basically most of the performance specifications were demonstrated. However, the klystron showed a sharp drop-off in power at 840 MHz due to a second harmonic cavity mode. The klystrode has considerably less gain than the existing klystron and thus additional RF drive is required.

Abstract

We present initial experimental results from the successful operation of a 600-kW peak, fundamental-mode multiple-beam klystron (MBK). The eight-beam device operates at a cathode voltage of ∼45 kV and a total beam current of ∼32 A with an axial guiding magnetic field of 1.8-2.2 kG. In the absence of radio-frequency (RF) drive, the measured beam transmission is in excess of 99%; at a driven frequency of 3.25 GHz, the measured beam transmission at saturation is ⩾97%, where the four-cavity circuit generates a peak power of ∼600 kW with an electronic efficiency of 40%. The measured beam transport and RF performance are in excellent agreement with predictions made by the three-dimensional gun/collector code, MICHELLE, and the large-signal klystron code, TESLA. The accuracy of the design codes enabled the achievement of a working device in a single hardware design pass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
