The Maker Movement is a social and material movement aspiring to lower the barriers to participation in technology construction. Material engagement, learning, and collaboration are important values in the maker movement. Aspiring to further the understanding of makerspaces as places for meaningful collaborations, this research asks how tools and materials mediate the collaboration between father and child in the makerspace? Based on a case study comprising three workshops designed to support father-child collaboration in a social neighborhood, this research presents an in-depth video interaction analysis of father-child collaborations. Although relying on a small sample of father-child pairs (n=2), this research depicts situations in which computational tools and creative materials shape individual actions and social and collaborative interactions. The results inform a discussion of the makerspace as a meaningful place for social interaction and the material implications on improvisation, articulation of ideas, and sharing of tasks.

I Danmark har vi i de seneste 10 år implementeret makerspaces på museer, kulturhuse og biblioteker. Her kan borgere uden tekniske forudsætninger lære, udtrykke sig kreativt, samarbejde og udvikle fællesskaber omkring teknologi. Ligesom biblioteker bygger makerspaces på idealer om tilgængeliggørelse, fællesskab og deling, men de udfordrer også konventionelle måder at tænke information og rum i et bibliotek. Denne artikel baserer sig på resultaterne af et igangværende ph.d.-projekt, hvor undertegnede bl.a har interviewet 13 makerspacebrugere og 15 biblioteksansatte med berøring med makerspaces og gennemført to længerevarende observationsstudier i hhv. Tingbjerg Kulturhus og Vordingborg Bibliotekernes makerspace. Artiklen fortæller om biblioteksmakerspaces set fra brugernes og personalets perspektiv.

As the novelty of makerspaces in libraries slowly fades, this study examines how participation, expertise, and embeddedness in the library organization and surrounding community are sustained in library makerspaces. Based on interviews with makerspace practitioners in 13 Danish libraries, practices of maintaining, scaling, replicating, and evolving library makerspaces are analyzed. The findings propose a variety of practices and tensions concerning sharing ownership with user communities; scaling and prolonging users’ participation; building expertise through documentation, repetition, and sharing; collaborating with local community partners; and embedding makerspace practices into existing library practices, resources, and values. The results inform a discussion of participation, expertise, and embeddedness, which are distilled into three guiding principles that can help libraries reflect and address the sustainability of their makerspace over time.

Makerspaces have spread to libraries in recent years, to promote equitable access to technologies, expand services, and encourage participation and learning. In this paper, scaffolding of learning is studied from the perspective of library makerspace practitioners. On the basis of interviews in six Danish libraries, we analyze formal, non-formal, and informal activities and identify seven ways of scaffolding. Three challenges are discussed: (a) fostering community while ensuring inclusion in informal activities, (b) avoiding to stifle creativity in short-term activities, and (c) finding the role of the library in formal activities. We propose actions to overcome these challenges, such as encouraging scaffolds across formal, non-formal and informal learning activities and addressing the educational role of the library.

This report addresses changes in population size in five species of diving ducks breeding and wintering in the Baltic Sea. Declines in breeding Greater Scaup, Eider and Velvet Scoters on the Baltic coast are verified. Long-tailed Ducks and Eiders have declined in winter. Breeding Eiders have declined in Norway. Monitoring programs in all Nordic countries are partly inadequate for detecting changes in numbers of birds both in winter and during breeding, but large-scale trends appear reliable. The reasons for the declines observed are largely unknown. For breeding Eiders in the northern part of the Baltic Sea a change in predation regimes on the breeding islands may be important. If the negative trends are to be stopped, a deeper understanding of the drivers involved and better knowledge about the ecological status of the Baltic Sea food webs utilized by the diving ducks are needed.

1. Monitoring of the ecosystem of Lake My´vatn, Iceland, since 1975 has revealed extreme fluctuations in important food web components, such as chironomids and cladocerans, with amplitudes of several orders of magnitude and a period of 5–8 years. This study uses sediment cores from the lake to examine if the food web fluctuations appear in the microfossil record of the sediment. 2. Dating was achieved by means of a combination of 137Cs and volcanic tephra and was fine-tuned by wiggle-matching of chironomid microfossil and monitoring data. 3. Cladocera exuviae and chironomid egg capsules in the uppermost 34 cm of sediment were compared with the monitoring record that consisted of 30 years of window trap catches of flying chironomids and a 16-year record of chydorid Cladocera caught in activity traps. 4. The observed chironomid and cladoceran population fluctuations were reflected in the sediment record of chironomid eggs and of the exuviae of three of seven cladocerans: Alonella nana, Alona rectangula and Eurycercus lamellatus, which also had the most extreme fluctuations in the monitoring data (3–4 orders of magnitude). Chydorus sphaericus, and to some extent Alona quadrangularis and Acroperus harpae, showed regular fluctuations in the core that the monitoring did not reveal. Density of subfossil chironomid eggs correlated positively with that of larval head capsules but not with other microfossils. 5. This study shows a reasonably good correspondence between the fossil records of chironomids and cladocerans on the one hand and biomonitoring data on the other. The results pave the way for an extension of the food web history to much earlier time intervals of the ecosystem, allowing the study of long-term variation in the food web dynamics, including the impact of climatic variation and other external forcing. The results also indicate the usefulness of chironomid egg capsules in palaeolimnological studies.
