We revealed the processes for the activation, mechanically induced self-sustaining reaction (MSR) and crystal growth of Ag in the mechanochemical reduction of AgCl with Al by in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction.

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the nature of the proposed metal-metal bonding in the tetranuclear cluster Ni4(NPtBu3)4, which features four nickel(I) centers engaged in strong ferromagnetic coupling. High-resolution single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction data collected at 25 K provide an accurate geometrical structure and a multipole model electron density description. Topological analysis of the electron density in the Ni4N4 core using the quantum theory of atoms in molecules clearly identifies the bonding as an eight-membered ring of type [Ni-N-]4 without direct Ni-Ni bonding, and this result is generally corroborated by an analysis of the energy density distribution. In contrast, the calculated bond delocalization index of ∼0.6 between neighboring Ni atoms is larger than what has been found for other bridged metal-metal bonds and implies direct Ni-Ni bonding. Similar support for the presence of direct Ni-Ni bonding is found in the interacting quantum atom approach, an energy decomposition scheme, which suggests the presence of stabilizing Ni-Ni bonding interactions with an exchange-correlation energy contribution approximately 50% of that of the Ni-N interactions. Altogether, while the direct interactions between neighboring Ni centers are too weak and sterically constrained to bear the signature of a topological bond critical point, other continuous measures clearly indicate significant Ni-Ni bonding. These metal-metal bonding interactions likely mediate direct ferromagnetic exchange, giving rise to the high-spin ground state of the molecule.

By the fine manipulation of the exceptional long-range germanium-telluride (Ge─Te) bonding through charge transfer engineering, we have achieved exceptional thermoelectric (TE) and mechanical properties in lead-free GeTe. This chemical bonding mechanism along with a semiordered zigzag nanostructure generates a notable increase of the average zT to a record value of ~1.73 in the temperature range of 323 to 773 K with ultrahigh maximum zT ~ 2.7. In addition, we significantly enhanced the Vickers microhardness numbers ( H v ) to an extraordinarily high value of 247 H v and effectively eliminated the thermal expansion fluctuation at the phase transition, which was problematic for application, by the present charge transfer engineering process and concomitant formation of microstructures. We further fabricated a single-leg TE generator and obtained a conversion efficiency of ~13.4% at the temperature difference of 463 K on a commercial instrument, which is located at the pinnacle of TE conversion.

Melamine is a precursor and building block for graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) materials, a group of layered materials showing great promise for catalytic applications. The synthetic pathway to g-CN includes a polycondensation reaction of melamine by evaporation of ammonia. Melamine molecules in the crystal organize into wave-like planes with an interlayer distance of 3.3 Å similar to that of g-CN. Here we present an extensive investigation of the experimental electron density of melamine obtained from modelling of synchrotron radiation X-ray single-crystal diffraction data measured at 25 K with special focus on the molecular geometry and intermolecular interactions. Both intra- and interlayer structures are dominated by hydrogen bonding and π-interactions. Theoretical gas-phase optimizations of the experimental molecular geometry show that bond lengths and angles for atoms in the same chemical environment (C−N bonds in the ring, amine groups) differ significantly more for the experimental geometry than for the gas-phase-optimized geometries, indicating that intermolecular interactions in the crystal affects the molecular geometry. In the experimental crystal geometry, one amine group has significantly more sp 3-like character than the others, hinting at a possible formation mechanism of g-CN. Topological analysis and energy frameworks show that the nitrogen atom in this amine group participates in weak intralayer hydrogen bonding. We hypothesize that melamine condenses to g-CN within the layers and that the unique amine group plays a key role in the condensation process.

Hydrogen-bonding parameters are modelled with different methods of quantum crystallography. The underlying model assumptions are analysed and related to the refinement results., Although hydrogen bonding is one of the most important motifs in chemistry and biology, H-atom parameters are especially problematic to refine against X-ray diffraction data. New developments in quantum crystallography offer a remedy. This article reports how hydrogen bonds are treated in three different quantum-crystallographic methods: Hirshfeld atom refinement (HAR), HAR coupled to extremely localized molecular orbitals and X-ray wavefunction refinement. Three different compound classes that form strong intra- or intermolecular hydrogen bonds are used as test cases: hydrogen maleates, the tripeptide l-alanyl-glycyl-l-alanine co-crystallized with water, and xylitol. The differences in the quantum-mechanical electron densities underlying all the used methods are analysed, as well as how these differences impact on the refinement results.

Two-dimensional (2D) boron monosulfide (BS) nanosheets are predicted to have several stable phases and unique electronic structures, endowing them with interesting attributes, including superconducting, thermoelectric, and hydrogen storage properties. In this paper, we report the experimental realization of 2D BS nanosheets by the physical exfoliation of rhombohedral boron monosulfide (r-BS). Moreover, we demonstrate the facile separation of a mixture of 2D BS nanosheets and the r-BS powder in acetonitrile; the former were selectively separated as a dispersion in the supernatant, whereas the latter remained in the precipitate. In addition, density functional theory calculations reveal a clear dependence of the bandgap energy (Eg) on the number of layers of stacked BS nanosheets, where Eg for BS nanosheets is approximately 1.0 eV higher than that for r-BS. Atomic force microscopy, cathode luminescence, ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy, and excitation emission matrix experiments revealed a consistent bandgap difference of approximately 1.0 eV between the BS nanosheets and r-BS. We also demonstrate the applications based on the properties that originated from the difference in the bandgap between r-BS and BS nanosheets using photoelectrochemical current switching. These results indicate that the nanosheet bandgap can be tuned to a desired value by controlling the number of stacked 2D BS nanosheets. Therefore, BS nanosheets are promising non-metal 2D materials for applications requiring bandgap control, such as electronics and photocatalysis.

Glass-forming metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have novel applications, but the origin of their peculiar melting behavior is unclear. Here, we report synchrotron X-ray diffraction electron densities of two zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), the glass-forming Zn-ZIF-zni and the isostructural thermally decomposing Co-ZIF-zni. Electron density analysis shows that the Zn−N bonds are more ionic than the Co−N bonds, which have distinct covalent features. Variable-temperature Raman spectra reveal the onset of significant imidazolate bond weakening in Co-ZIF-zni above 673 K. Melting can be controlled by tuning the metal–ligand and imidazole bonding strength as shown from thermal analysis of nine solid-solution CoxZn1−x-ZIF-zni (x=0.3 to 0.003) MOFs, and a mere 4 % Co-doping into Zn-ZIF-zni results in thermal decomposition instead of melting. The present findings demonstrate the key role of the metal–ligand bonds and imidazolate bonds in controlling the delicate balance between melting and decomposition processes in this class of ZIF compounds.

One defining feature of spinel compounds is their ability to accommodate a high degree of tailorable point defects, and this significantly influences their physical properties. Standard defect models of spinels often only consider metal atom inversion between octahedral and tetrahedral sites, thereby neglecting other defects such as interstitial atoms. In addition, most studies rely on a single structural characterization technique, and this may bias the result and give uncertainty about the correct crystal structure. Here we explore the virtues of multi-technique investigations to limit method and model bias. We have used Pair Distribution Function analysis, Rietveld refinement and Maximum Entropy Method analysis of Powder X-ray Diffraction data, Zn edge Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure, and solid-state $^{27}$Al Nuclear Magnetic Resonance to study the structural defects in ZnAl$_2$O$_4$ spinel samples prepared by either microwave hydrothermal synthesis, supercritical flow synthesis, or spark plasma sintering. In addition, the samples were subjected to thermal post treatments. The study demonstrates that numerous synthesis dependent defects are present and that the different synthesis pathways allow for defect tailoring within the ZnAl$_2$O$_4$ structure. Resonance-assisted hydrogen bonds (RAHBs) are exploited in chemical synthesis or serve as models for biologically relevant proton-transfer reactions [K. T. Mahmudov and A. J. L. Pombeiro, Chem. – Eur. J., 2016, 22, 16356–16398]. Their properties depend on the position of the hydrogen atom between donor and acceptor atoms. In the intramolecular RAHB of hydrogen maleate salts, this position is strongly influenced by the counter cation and varies from highly asymmetric to perfectly symmetric. This compound class is therefore ideally suited to investigate the factors determining geometry and electron density of intramolecular RAHBs. Here, it is shown that Hirshfeld atom refinements (HARs) of X-ray diffraction data of different hydrogen maleate salts can accurately and precisely match the hydrogen atom positions obtained from neutron diffraction and are independent of the model used for the hydrogen atom displacement parameters. Thus, the simplest, i.e. isotropic, HAR model can be used to locate hydrogen atoms also in bridging positions. In contrast, the determination of electron-density parameters with X-ray constrained wavefunction (XCW) fitting requires anisotropic, highly accurate hydrogen atom displacement parameters.

Understanding the mechanism of the insulator–metal transition (IMT) in VO2 is a necessary step in optimising this material's properties for a range of functional applications. Here, Rietveld refinement of synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction patterns is performed on thermochromic V1−xWxO2 (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.02) nanorod aggregates over the temperature range 100 ≤ T ≤ 400 K to examine the effect of doping on the structure and properties of the insulating monoclinic (M1) phase and metallic rutile (R) phase. Precise measurement of the lattice constants of the M1 and R phases enabled the onset (Ton) and endset (Tend) temperatures of the IMT to be determined accurately for different dopant levels. First-principles calculations reveal that the observed decrease in both Ton and Tend with increasing W content is a result of Peierls type V–O–V dimers being replaced by linear W–O–V dimers with a narrowing of the band gap. The results are interpreted in terms of the bandwidth-controlled Mott–Hubbard IMT model, providing a more detailed understanding of the underlying physical mechanisms driving the IMT as well as a guide to optimising properties of VO2-based materials for specific applications.

Static structure factors and charge density for metallic aluminum were investigated by periodic calculations using atom-centered Gaussian-type basis sets with the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) functional implemented in the CRYSTAL14 package and X-ray constrained wave function (XCW) fitting. The effects of additional diffuse d and f basis functions on structure factors were compared with synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and quantitative convergent electron beam diffraction data. Changes in structure factors from an independent atom model at 022, 113, and 222 reflections introduced d and f basis functions similar to those of the experimental data. The XCW fitting was applied to different sizes of aluminum clusters. The charge density features for a 50-atom cluster clearly demonstrated electron accumulation at tetrahedral sites and electron depletion at octahedral sites. The resolution dependence of the XCW study suggests that structure factors of the five lowest resolution reflections with 0.1% accuracy were indispensable for determining the detailed bonding description in the case of metallic aluminum.

Supramolecular chemistry under mechanochemical conditions has drawn attention because it can induce low-solubility molecules to self-assemble, although most of the reported examples have been limited to two-component systems. We applied mechanochemical synthesis to achieve multimolecular self-assembly in more challenging three-component systems. The produced crystals showed multicolor solid-state luminescence depending on the components when exposed to UV light. Optical outputs and X-ray diffraction studies were used to examine the self-assembling behavior in greater depth. Using synchrotron radiation, in situ X-ray diffraction permitted direct observation of the milling process, which started the self-assembly process within 1 min. This research emphasizes the importance of multicomponent molecules with optical functions and self-assembling behavior and offers the possibility of developing more complicated multicomponent crystals and organic solid solutions for advanced materials.

The vapochromic single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformation of a highly luminescent Pt

Glass-forming metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have novel applications, but the origin of their peculiar melting behavior is unclear. Here, we report synchrotron X-ray diffraction electron densities of two zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), the glass-forming Zn-ZIF-zni and the isostructural thermally decomposing Co-ZIF-zni. Structural disorder, highly effective in reducing thermal conductivity, is important in technological applications such as thermal barrier coatings and thermoelectrics. In particular, interstitial, disordered, diffusive atoms are common in complex crystal structures with ultralow thermal conductivity, but are rarely found in simple crystalline solids. Combining single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction, the maximum entropy method, diffuse scattering, and theoretical calculations, here we report the direct observation of one-dimensional disordered In1+ chains in a simple chain-like thermoelectric InTe, which contains a significant In1+ vacancy along with interstitial indium sites. Intriguingly, the disordered In1+ chains undergo a static-dynamic transition with increasing temperature to form a one-dimensional diffusion channel, which is attributed to a low In1+-ion migration energy barrier along the c direction, a general feature in many other TlSe-type compounds. Our work provides a basis towards understanding ultralow thermal conductivity with weak temperature dependence in TlSe-type chain-like materials., Disordered, diffusive atoms are rarely found in simple crystalline solids. Here, the authors observe one-dimensional disordered diffusion channel in a simple chain-like thermoelectric InTe with ultralow thermal conductivity.

A hydrothermal reactor for nanoparticle synthesis was designed and constructed for in-situ synchrotron radiation powder diffraction experiment at SPring-8 BL02B2 beamline. The oscillation measurement with a piston vibrator in the system contributed to measurement of homogeneous intensity distribution of Debye Scherrer ring. In-situ powder diffraction study of CeO2 nanoparticle synthesis was described to show the performance of the reactor. Three-dimensional diagram using pressure, temperature and size of CeO2 nanoparticles was determined by the system. The pressure and temperature dependence of particle formation speeds, lattice constants, and particle sizes was clearly determined as a reproducible result. A sensitive response of the cell volume by applying additional 7 MPa pressure was observed in the supercritical condition, whereas there were almost no volume changes in the liquid phase by applying additional 10 MPa pressure. The present in-situ system will be used to optimize the synthesis condition of functional nanoparticles.

MgAgSb-based materials are ideal candidates for thermoelectric applications due to several advantages, such as rich elements, low cost and excellent mechanical robustness. Recently, the all-scale hierarchical architecture and strong anharmonicity in bonding are realized as effective strategies to reduce the lattice thermal conductivity greatly. Here, a design of the all-scale hierarchical architectures, in which the phonon is scattered by the high density of grain boundaries, dislocation, stacking faults, twin boundaries and nanopores, and enhancement of Gruneisen parameter have been demonstrated in reducing the lattice thermal conductivity of MgAgSb materials in the whole temperature range, resulting in an ultralow lattice thermal conductivity ∼ 0.45 W m−1 K−1 at 473 K. Furthermore, the carrier concentration and mobility are also optimized by Zn-doping and heat-treating. The simultaneous optimization of electrical and thermal transport properties contributes to a tremendous enhancement of average ZT to about 1.3 in the range from 323 K to 548 K (the maximum ZT is about 1.4 at 423 K) in the sample Mg0.97Zn0.03Ag0.9Sb0.95 with heat-treating for 10 days. The method we designed not only boosts the thermoelectric application of MgAgSb-based materials but also enables a synergetic strategy for designing thermoelectric materials with high thermoelectric performance.

International audience; Copper-based chalcogenides with tetrahedral framework structures have been attracting increasing attention as environmentally friendly thermoelectric materials. A representative group of such thermoelectric chalcogenides is the Cu26A2M6S32 (A = V, Nb, Ta; M = Ge, Sn) family of colusites, which exhibit low electrical resistivity, a large Seebeck coefficient, and low thermal conductivity; these properties are necessary for efficient thermal-to-electronic energy conversion. Here, we show the impact of crystal structure on the lattice thermal conductivity of colusite with A = Nb, M = Sn. The crystal structure can be modified by controlling the cationic compositions and the deficiency in the sulfur content as Cu26−xNb2Sn6+xS32−δ. The Cu/Sn ratio is found to be the key parameter for exsolution into distinct phases with ordered and disordered arrangements of cations. For the ordered-structure phase, sulfur sublimation induces atomic-scale defects/disordered states including interstitial defects, anti-site defects, and site splitting, which function as strong phonon scatterers, and the lowest lattice thermal conductivity of ∼0.5 W K−1 m−1 is achieved for the modified ordered structure. This finding provides a simple approach to modifying the crystal structure of thermoelectric chalcogenides via the loss of anions to reduce their lattice thermal conductivity.

Recently, thermoelectric lead-free selenides have attracted great attention due to their earth-abundant, low-cost and environment-friendly characteristics. Here we report a new strategy to simultaneously enhance the electronic transport properties and reduce the thermal conductivity of polycrystalline SnSe2. By combining weak van der Waals bonding with the mobile behavior of Ag+ ions, the carrier concentration is optimized over a wide temperature range, which can be attributed to the dynamic Ag+-intercalation into the van der Waals gap from the Ag+ ion reservoir AgSnSe2. On account of additional electrical bridges between interlayers contributed by the intercalated Ag+ ions and weak anisotropy, an exciting high power factor of up to ∼7.46 μW cm−1 K−2 at 789 K is achieved along the pressing direction. In addition, the thermal conductivity is simultaneously reduced to ∼0.57 W m−1 K−1 at 789 K, owing to numerous line defects, phase interfaces, twin boundaries, dislocations and intercalated atomic layers generated after Ag introduction, as well as the anharmonic vibration of Ag+ ions. As a result, a record peak ZT of ∼1.03 at 789 K is realized along the pressing direction, which is ∼1.6 times larger than the highest reported value (0.63) of polycrystalline SnSe2 and even comparable to that of p-type polycrystalline SnSe. This study opens a new way to achieve ultra-high thermoelectric performance, especially in layered materials.

The single-component molecular conductor [Pt(dmdt)2] is a sought-after ambient-pressure molecular Dirac electron system, which exhibits a high temperature-insensitive conductivity and temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility nearly vanishing below 120 K. First-principles DFT calculations reveal that Dirac cones emerge along the a* direction, and form Dirac nodal lines.

Physical review letters 126(11), 117403 (1-6) (2021). doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.126.117403, Ultrafast changes of charge density distribution in diamond after irradiation with an intense x-ray pulse (photon energy, 7.8 keV; pulse duration, 6 fs; intensity, 3×10$^{19}$ W/cm$^2$) have been visualized with the x-ray pump–x-ray probe technique. The measurement reveals that covalent bonds in diamond are broken and the electron distribution around each atom becomes almost isotropic within ∼5 fs after the intensity maximum of the x-ray pump pulse. The 15 fs time delay observed between the bond breaking and atomic disordering indicates nonisothermality of electron and lattice subsystems on this timescale. From these observations and simulation results, we interpret that the x-ray-induced change of the interatomic potential drives the ultrafast atomic disordering underway to the following nonthermal melting., Published by APS, College Park, Md.

The crystal interaction density is generally assumed to be a suitable measure of the polarization of a low‐molecular weight ligand inside an enzyme, but this approximation has seldomly been tested and has never been quantified before. In this study, we compare the crystal interaction density and the interaction electrostatic potential for a model compound of loxistatin acid (E64c) with those inside cathepsin B, in solution, and in vacuum. We apply QM/MM calculations and experimental quantum crystallography to show that the crystal interaction density is indeed very similar to the enzyme interaction density. Less than 0.1 e are shifted between these two environments in total. However, this difference has non‐negligible consequences for derived properties., The polarization of a drug molecule in an enzyme environment can be approximated by the polarization of the same molecule in its small‐molecule crystal structure. The degree of similarity is quantified in this study for a model compound of the protease inhibitor loxistatin acid in its interaction with cathepsin B by using interaction densities and interaction electrostatic potentials.

Physical review letters 128(22), 223203 (2022). doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.128.223203, Transient structural changes of Al$_2$O$_3$ on subatomic length scales following irradiation with an intense x-ray laser pulse (photon energy: 8.70 keV; pulse duration: 6 fs; fluence: 8×10$^2$ J/cm$^2$) have been investigated by using an x-ray pump x-ray probe technique. The measurement reveals that aluminum and oxygen atoms remain in their original positions by ∼20 fs after the intensity maximum of the pump pulse, followed by directional atomic displacements at the fixed unit cell parameters. By comparing the experimental results and theoretical simulations, we interpret that electron excitation and relaxation triggered by the pump pulse modify the potential energy surface and drives the directional atomic displacements. Our results indicate that high-resolution x-ray structural analysis with the accuracy of 0.01 Å is feasible even with intense x-ray pulses by making the pulse duration shorter than the timescale needed to complete electron excitation and relaxation processes, which usually take up to a few tens of femtoseconds., Published by APS, College Park, Md.
