Background: As life expectancy and morbidity related to chronic disease increase, the baby boomers will be called upon to provide care to aging members of their family or to be care recipients themselves. Purpose: Through the theoretical lens of the life course perspective, this review of the literature provides insight into what characteristics of baby boomers separate them from previous caregiving cohorts and how these characteristics will affect family caregiving. Methods: A systematic process to identify literature was completed using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Results: Findings suggest multiple emerging trends related to caregiving, including (1) increasing use of digital technology for information gathering and support, (2) more diversity among caregivers and care recipients, (3) strained finances and loss of entitlements, (4) more complex care and care management, (5) demand for public policies related to caregiving, and (6) balancing work, family, chronic disease, and caregiving. Discussion: Examining the literature related to family caregiving and baby boomers through a life course perspective offers a unique and more complete understanding of emerging trends related to chronic disease management. Translation to Health Education Practice: These emerging trends offer health educators implications for strategies and best practices intended to support those involved in family caregiving.

Background: Despite the multitude of available resources, family caregivers of those with chronic disease continually underutilize support services to cope with the demands of caregiving. Several studies have linked self-identification as a caregiver to the increased likelihood of support service use. Purpose: The present study reviewed the literature related to the development of family caregiver identity. Methods: After a systematic process to locate literature was completed, content analysis was conducted to determine major themes related to the development of caregiving identity. Results: Findings suggest that there are multiple factors related to the development of family caregiver identity, including role engulfment and reversal, loss of shared identity, family obligation and gender norming, extension of the former role, and development of a master identity. Discussion: Considering the role of identity in human behavior, health professionals can address the underutilization of support services by family caregivers of those with chronic disease by understanding the influences on the development of caregiver identity. Translation to Health Education Practice: This literature review will assist health educators in addressing the underutilization of support services by family caregivers of those with chronic disease.

College life is an exciting time for thousands of emerging adults on campuses across the nation. It is also an opportunity for students to engage in behaviors that can impede personal health. Numerous studies link personal health and wellness to academic achievement.1-3 The core mission of most institutions of higher education (IHEs) is academic success. Health promotion supports this mission by creating healthy learning environments. Due to structural and financial constraints operating at different levels within university systems, health promotion efforts typically focus on quantity and less on quality.4,5 As IHEs come under increased scrutiny in terms of student retention and operating within shrinking budgets, outcome-based funding may soon direct health promotion programming. This leads to the critical need for health promotion on campuses to understand best practices. To aid IHEs, several initiatives have been launched by the American College Health Association (ACHA). This article describes the efforts of one IHE to plan, implement and evaluate campus health promotion activities.

The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate the Family Caregiver Identity Scale (FCIS), an instrument designed to measure the extent to which an individual identifies with the family caregiver role. The process of instrument development outlined in the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing was combined with Dillman's four stages of pretesting. This was a multistage, iterative process, including several revisions based on feedback from experts, interviews, and pilot testing. Factor analyses were performed to test the hypothesized model of caregiver identity. A version of the FCIS consisting of 18 items was created and demonstrated initial evidence of validity. The FCIS will enable gerontological professionals to assess caregiver identity. The absence of caregiver identity is a factor in caregivers not accessing support services. This study contributes to the growing body of research connecting caregiver identity and support service utilization by caregivers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite consistent evidence to suggest that participating in leisure is associated with perceived health status among older adults, there have been few attempts to determine the possible underlying mechanisms in this relationship, including the role of quality of life (QoL). This study examined the role of perceived quality of life in the relationship between leisure and perceived health in older women. Correlations, regression, and mediation analysis were conducted on data from the Woman's College Alumnae Women's Health Study. Results indicate that QoL partially mediates the relationship between leisure and perceived health in older women. Findings further establish the link between leisure and perceived health with QoL playing an important role in the relationship. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the differences in satisfaction with an adult day program between shortand long-term clients. Content analysis of clinical notes and records of 40 clients of a dementia-specific adult day center was conducted. Four themes emerged from clients (N = 15) who had been enrolled for 1 year or less: interest in program, appropriateness of program, adjustment to program, and communication regarding program. Three themes emerged from clients (N = 25) who had been enrolled over a year: assurance, seeking support, and assistance with decision-making beyond or outside of day center, and contentment. Caring for a family member with Alzheimer's disease and related dementia has been recognized as a source of stress that can negatively impact the health and well-being of the caregiver. Coping strategies for the family caregiver may help him or her diminish this impact. Growing attention has been focused on the relationships between religious coping, stress, and health outcomes among family caregivers. For this article, the literature was examined in an attempt to understand religion as a source of support and means of coping among individuals providing care to a family member with Alzheimer's disease and related dementia.
