Quasi two-dimensional MOF/graphene oxide heterostructures are synthesized using a MHz frequency acoustotemplating method. The composite exhibits two-orders of magnitude higher supercapacitance compared to its 3D HKUST-1/graphene oxide counterpart.

Owing to their large surface area and high uptake capacity, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted considerable attention as potential materials for gas storage, energy conversion, and electrocatalysis. Various strategies have recently been proposed to manipulate the MOF surface chemistry to facilitate exposure of the embedded metal centers at the crystal surface to allow more effective binding of target molecules to these active sites. Nevertheless, such strategies remain complex, often requiring strict control over the synthesis conditions to avoid blocking pore access, reduction in crystal quality, or even collapse of the entire crystal structure. In this work, we exploit the hydrodynamics and capillary resonance associated with acoustically-driven dynamically spreading and nebulizing thin films as a new method for ultrafast synthesis of swordlike Cu3(1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate)n (Cu-BTC) MOFs with unique monoclinic crystal structures (P21/n) distinct to that obtained via conventional bulk solvothermal synthesis, with 'swordlike' morphologies whose lengths far exceed their thicknesses. Through pulse modulation and taking advantage of the rapid solvent evaporation associated with the high nebulisation rates, we are also able to control the thicknesses of these large aspect ratio (width and length with respect to the thickness) crystals by arresting their vertical growth, which, in turn, allows exposure of the metal active sites at the crystal surface. An upshot of such active site exposure on the crystal surface is the concomitant enhancement in the conductivity of the MOF, evident from the improvement in its current density by two orders of magnitude.

MXenes hold immense potential given their superior electrical properties. The practical adoption of these promising materials is, however, severely constrained by their oxidative susceptibility, leading to significant performance deterioration and lifespan limitations. Attempts to preserve MXenes have been limited, and it has not been possible thus far to reverse the material’s performance. In this work, we show that subjecting oxidized micron or nanometer thickness dry MXene films—even those constructed from nanometer-order solution-dispersed oxidized flakes—to just one minute of 10 MHz nanoscale electromechanical vibration leads to considerable removal of its surface oxide layer, whilst preserving its structure and characteristics. Importantly, electrochemical performance is recovered close to that of their original state: the pseudocapacitance, which decreased by almost 50% due to its oxidation, reverses to approximately 98% of its original value, with good capacitance retention ( ≈ 93%) following 10,000 charge–discharge cycles at 10 A g−1. These promising results allude to the exciting possibility for rejuvenating the material for reuse, therefore offering a more economical and sustainable route that improves its potential for practical translation.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently been shown to be effective antimicrobial agents, particularly if they comprise pathogenicidal metal ions. Nevertheless, the accessibility of these active metal sites to the pathogen, and hence the MOFs' antimicrobial activity itself, is often poor since the metal nodes are usually embedded deep within its three-dimensional (3D) structure. We show that a unique copper-based (copper(II)-benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate) MOF, whose quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) swordlike structure facilitates exposure of the metal ions along its surface, exhibits enhanced antimicrobial properties against three representative plant pathogens: a bacterium (Pseudomonas syringae), a fungus (Fusarium solani), and a virus (Odontoglossum ringspot virus (ORSV)). Such superior antimicrobial activity results in low minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs)─half that of a commercial pesticide and an eighth of its conventional 3D cubic MOF counterpart (HKUST-1)─and hence low phytotoxicity, which can be attributed to the accessibility of the surface copper sites to the pathogen, thereby facilitating their adhesion and physical contact with the MOF. Additionally, we observed that orchids treated with the quasi-2D MOF showed negligible phytotoxicity and 80% decreased viral load. This work constitutes the first study to demonstrate the antimicrobial properties of this novel MOF against bacterial, fungal, and viral plant pathogens, and the first chemical control of ORSV.

The purpose of this article is to set forth possible strategies and techniques of analysis to diagnose or identify the source of HIV transmission in victims of sexual abuse. Diagnosis of HIV-1 transmission from sexual abuse is complicated. Timely blood samples are important. The right to confidentiality of the HIV diagnosis may prevent sampling from the offender. Hideous rapes occur during war, which victimize many women. Women delivering a child, seeking an abortion, or having a miscarriage may include victims of sexual abuse. HIV-infected children, where vertical transmission has been excluded, are important for investigation. Men who have sex with men may abuse young men. HIV-infected teenagers with signs of early infection should also be considered. Hundreds of single HIV-1 sequences can be created from one or more blood samples from the case and the alleged abuser. The more HIV-1 genes and sequences that are included, the better the outcomes of the phylogenetic relation. Evidence in support of transmission may be obtained from phylogenetic tree analysis and may also free someone from suspicion.

Pregnant women fear being identified as HIV-1-infected and this has hampered prevention programmes and the calculation of transmission rates in Viet Nam. We introduced post-test counselling, antiretroviral prophylaxis, and formula feeding, and determined the vertical transmission rate in parts of Northern Viet Nam.HIV infection was identified in 234 pregnant women; 182 (77.8%) accepted follow-up of their children. Counselling was given on 3-7 occasions for altogether approximately 6 h on antiretroviral prophylaxis and formula feeding to avoid transmission, and on the importance of surveillance of the child. All children were formula-fed. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used for the diagnosis of HIV-1 in the children. One hundred and thirty-five of the 182 mothers allowed ≥ 3 blood samples to be taken from birth to ≥ 1 y of age, 32/182 provided a birth sample only, and 15/182 provided a sample later only. Nevirapine was given at delivery to 93/135 (69%) women, and to 128/135 (95%) children. Additionally, combination therapy was given to 15/135 (11%) who entered the study before delivery, and azidothymidine to their children for 1 week.Nine of 135 (6.7%) children became infected and 2/15 of the others, giving altogether 11/150 infected (7.3%). Intrauterine transmission was identified in 7/167 (4.2%) children by a positive PCR test at birth. PCR was negative at birth but positive at 1 month in 2/135 (1.5%), pointing to delivery-associated transmission. Thus, intrauterine transmission accounted for 78% (7/9). None of the uninfected children died, but 3/11 (p =0.004) of the HIV-1-infected died (in AIDS).Post-test confidential counselling, formula feeding, and antiretroviral prophylaxis resulted in low rates of delivery-associated and late HIV-1 transmissions.

Objective: To assess the association between type and timing of initiation of antiretroviral therapy in pregnancy and duration of pregnancy. Design: Prospective study. Methods: Data on 3920 mother child pairs were examined (3015 mother-child pairs from the European Collaborative Study and 905 from the Swiss Mother + Child HIV Cohort Study). Factors examined included gestational age, antiretroviral therapy during pregnancy, maternal CD4 count, viral load, illicit drug use (IDU) and mode of delivery. Deliveries at less than 37 weeks were defined as premature. Results: The prematurity rate was 17% and median gestational age 39 weeks. Twenty-three per cent (896 of 3920) of women received antiretroviral therapy during pregnancy: 64% (573 of 896) zidovudine monotherapy, 24% (215) combination therapy without protease inhibitors (PI) and 12% (108) combination therapy with PI. In multivariate analysis, adjusted for maternal CD4 count and IDU, odds ratio (OR) of prematurity was 2.60 195% confidence interval (CI), 1.43-4.751 and 1.82 (95% CI, 1.13-2.92) for infants exposed to combination therapy with and without a Pl, respectively, compared to no treatment. Exposure to monotherapy was not associated with prematurity, but severe immunosuppression and IDU in pregnancy were. Women on combination therapy from before pregnancy were twice as likely to deliver prematurely as those starting therapy in the third trimester (OR, 2.17 95% CI, 1.03-4.58). Conclusions: Pregnancy issues should be discussed when making decisions about initiation of combination antiretroviral therapy for HIV-infected women. Elective caesarean section to reduce vertical transmission at 36 weeks rather than 38 weeks may be advisable in women on combination therapy with PI. © 2000 Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.
