Today, relatively warm Circumpolar Deep Water is melting Thwaites Glacier at the base of its ice shelf and at the grounding zone, contributing to significant ice retreat. Accelerating ice loss has been observed since the 1970s; however, it is unclear when this phase of significant melting initiated. We analyzed the marine sedimentary record to reconstruct Thwaites Glacier’s history from the early Holocene to present. Marine geophysical surveys were carried out along the floating ice-shelf margin to identify core locations from various geomorphic settings. We use sedimentological data and physical properties to define sedimentary facies at seven core sites. Glaciomarine sediment deposits reveal that the grounded ice in the Amundsen Sea Embayment had already retreated to within ~45 km of the modern grounding zone prior to ca. 9,400 y ago. Sediments deposited within the past 100+ y record abrupt changes in environmental conditions. On seafloor highs, these shifts document ice-shelf thinning initiating at least as early as the 1940s. Sediments recovered from deep basins reflect a transition from ice proximal to slightly more distal conditions, suggesting ongoing grounding-zone retreat since the 1950s. The timing of ice-shelf unpinning from the seafloor for Thwaites Glacier coincides with similar records from neighboring Pine Island Glacier. Our work provides robust new evidence that glacier retreat in the Amundsen Sea was initiated in the mid-twentieth century, likely associated with climate variability.

Provenance records from sediments deposited offshore of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) can help identify past major ice retreat, thus constraining ice‐sheet models projecting future sea‐level rise. Interpretations from such records are, however, hampered by the ice obscuring Antarctica's geology. Here, we explore central West Antarctica's subglacial geology using basal debris from within the Byrd ice core, drilled to the bed in 1968. Sand grain microtextures and a high kaolinite content (∼38–42%) reveal the debris consists predominantly of eroded sedimentary detritus, likely deposited initially in a warm, pre‐Oligocene, subaerial environment. Detrital hornblende 40 Ar/ 39 Ar ages suggest proximal late Cenozoic subglacial volcanism. The debris has a distinct provenance signature, with: common Permian‐Early Jurassic mineral grains; absent early Ross Orogeny grains; a high kaolinite content; and high 143 Nd/ 144 Nd and low 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios. The Eocene–Oligocene Transition (~34.4–33.7 Ma) marks a major step in the long-term evolution from the greenhouse climate of the Early Palaeogene to the icehouse regime of the Late Neogene and Quaternary. However, it remains uncertain which landmasses were covered by ice sheets during the Early Oligocene Glacial Maximum (~33.7–33.2 Ma), an interval of peak glaciation inferred from deep-sea benthic foraminifera oxygen isotope records that immediately follows the Eocene-Oligocene Transition. The scarcity of Late Eocene and Early Oligocene continental and shallow-marine records in both Arctic and Antarctic regions has prevented the reconstruction of environmental conditions and ice-sheet extent during the Early Oligocene, which is critical for assessing ice–ocean–atmosphere interactions during early stages of the Cenozoic icehouse. Here, we present the first Early Oligocene shallow-marine record from the Pacific margin of West Antarctica, recovered from the central Amundsen Sea Embayment shelf on RV Polarstern expedition PS104 at Site 21. Marine mudstones recovered at this site document the presence of a vegetated archipelago at a palaeo-latitude of 73.5°S. Pollen assemblages and organic biomarker proxies indicate a cool-temperate Nothofagus-dominated forest situated within a productive marine archipelago. No evidence for marine terminating ice was detected in the cores from Site 21, thus indicating that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet was small or entirely absent during the Early Oligocene.

How greenhouse forcing affects ice sheets and sea level during peak interglacial times is an unresolved question of great societal importance. Here we examine the development of glacial-interglacial sequence motifs in drill cores from the Pacific margin of Antarctica and explore how the West Antarctic Ice Sheet impacted sedimentary systems under different climate states, including during the Pliocene Climatic Optimum (PCO) ~4.5-4.0 Ma. Hundreds of meters of Pliocene sediments were recovered during IODP Expedition 379 in two drill sites within the Resolution Drift. Site U1533 was positioned near a submarine channel originating from the Amundsen Sea continental slope, and Site U1532 was located on the western upper flank of the hemipelagic drift. Abundance and type of sediment transport structures in the cores change gradually in lower Pliocene strata in both drill sites in concert with changes in sedimentation rate. Pliocene strata are characterized with a repetitive facies stacking pattern composed of greenish gray clast-bearing mud with a biosiliceous component, interbedded with dark brownish gray laminated silty clay. The greenish gray clast-bearing muds are tentatively interpreted as “interglacials”, however, many greenish grey units have sharp upward transitions into “glacial” laminated mud and the units are irregularly spaced with depth. Analysis of the red-green channel (a*) in shipboard reflectance spectroscopy and colorimetry (RSC) data for Site U1532 on the shipboard age model demonstrates the variable orbital cyclicity of the facies assemblage. Sequence motifs, which are further explored in half-core magnetic susceptibility and XRF core-scanner data, highlight how ice growth and decay, downslope sediment transport, and the position and intensity of ocean currents affected the depositional systems. In the near absence of proximal geological records from south of the Antarctic Circle, it remains disputed whether polar ice could exist under such environmental conditions. Here we present results from a unique sedimentary sequence recovered from the West Antarctic shelf. This by far southernmost Cretaceous record contains an intact ~3 m-long network of in-situ fossil roots. The roots are embedded in a mudstone matrix bearing diverse pollen and spores, indicative of a temperate lowland rainforest environment at a palaeolatitude of ~82°S during the Turonian–Santonian (93–83 Myr). A climate model simulation shows that the reconstructed temperate climate at this high latitude requires a combination of both atmospheric CO2 contents of 1120–1680 ppmv and a vegetated land surface without major Antarctic glaciation, highlighting the important cooling effect exerted by ice albedo in high-CO2 climate worlds.

In the near absence of proximal geological records from south of the Antarctic Circle, it is disputed whether polar ice could exist under such environmental conditions. Here we use a sedimentary sequence recovered from the West Antarctic shelf—the southernmost Cretaceous record reported so far—and show that a temperate lowland rainforest environment existed at a palaeolatitude of about 82° S during the Turonian–Santonian age (92 to 83 million years ago). This record contains an intact 3-metre-long network of in situ fossil roots embedded in a mudstone matrix containing diverse pollen and spores. A climate model simulation shows that the reconstructed temperate climate at this high latitude requires a combination of both atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations of 1,120–1,680 parts per million by volume and a vegetated land surface without major Antarctic glaciation, highlighting the important cooling effect exerted by ice albedo under high levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide.

Most conceptual models of ocean circulation during past glacial periods invoke a shallowed North Atlantic‐sourced water mass overlying an expanded, poorly ventilated Southern Ocean (SO)‐sourced deep water mass (Southern Component Water, or SCW), rich in remineralised carbon, within the Atlantic basin. However, the ventilation state, carbon inventory and circulation pathway of SCW sourced in the Pacific sector of the SO (Pacific SO) during glacial periods are less well understood. Here, we present multi‐proxy data – including δ18O and δ13C measured on the benthic and planktic foraminifera Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi, and Neogloboquadrina pachyderma, and productivity proxies including percent CaCO3, total organic carbon (TOC) and Ba/Ti – from a sediment core located in the high latitude (71°S) Pacific SO spanning the last 800 kyr. Typical glacial δ13C values of SCW at this core site are ~0 ‰. We find no evidence for SCW with extremely low δ13C values during glacials in the high latitude Pacific SO. This leads to a spatial gradient in the stable carbon isotope composition of SCW from the high latitude SO, suggesting there are different processes of deep‐ and bottom‐water formation around Antarctica. A reduced imprint of air‐sea gas exchange is evident in the SCW formed in the Atlantic SO compared with the Pacific SO. A spatial δ13C gradient in SCW is apparent throughout much of the last 800,000 years, including interglacials. A SO‐wide depletion in benthic δ13C is observed is early MIS 16, coinciding with the lowest atmospheric pCO2 recorded in Antarctic ice cores.

Late Miocene to Recent sediments offshore from the Antarctic Peninsula are predominantly lithogenic, having originated through glacial erosion. Sediments that accumulated during interglacial periods commonly have a greater biogenic component, but deposits in which this constitutes a substantial fraction are rare. Only a small fraction of the continental block is above sea level and even during interglacial periods temperatures are only warm enough to generate significant melt at low elevations for a few weeks each summer, so sediment input to the sea from surface runoff is minor. Sediment transport to the continental margin takes place mainly at the ice bed during glacial periods when the grounding line advances to the shelf edge. On the Pacific margin, downslope transport from the shelf edge region occurs mainly through gravitational mass transport processes. These processes are likely most active during glacial periods when rapid delivery of glacial sediment leads to instability on the uppermost slope and discharge of sediment-laden subglacial meltwater at the shelf edge grounding line initiates turbidity currents. The lack of obvious large slide scars along most of the relatively steep continental slope suggests that most individual failures are small in volume. Dendritic networks of small channels on the lower slope feed into large turbidity current channels that run out across the continental rise for hundreds of kilometres. Between the channels are giant sediment drifts, some with more than a kilometre of relief, which are composed predominantly of finely-bedded silt and clay layers. The drifts have been produced through entrainment of the fine-grained components of turbidity currents in the ambient bottom current that flows southwestward along the margin. Results from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 178 showed that these drifts contain high-resolution records of ice sheet and oceanographic changes, although unfortunately insufficient core material was recovered to

West Antarctica hosts one of the largest continental rift systems on earth. Due to the extensive ice cover and the lack of exposed sedimentary rocks, little is known about the detailed geological and climatic evolution of West Antarc- tica. Here we present initial geochronologic, petrographic, stratigraphic, palynologic and clay mineralogy data of the first drill cores from the Amundsen Sea, off West Antarctica. The drilled succession revealed fine-grained, plant- bearing sediments of late Cretaceous age (∼93 to 85 Ma), deposited during continental stretching and breakup between West Antarctica and New Zealand. The Cretaceous deposits are separated by a peat layer from coarse- grained sandstones, which contain zircon and apatite yielding U-Pb ages of ca. 46-39 Ma. This implies a hiatus of at least 40 Myr between the fine-grained Cretaceous deposits and the overlying sandstones, which is in agreement with the absence of in-situ or reworked Paleocene to early/mid-Eocene palynomorphs. We tentatively interpret this hiatus as reflecting tectonic quiescence and slow downwearing, or non-deposition. This interpretation supports our previous thermochronological data from the onshore realm, which show that extension-related exhumation ceased at the end of the Cretaceous. We interpret renewed deposition during the upper Eocene to Oligocene to reflect renewed rapid exhumation along the West Antarctic Rift System and the rise of the Transantarctic Mountains. As well as the Eocene dates, the Eocene to Oligocene sandstones contain Cambro-Silurian, Permo-Triassic, Early Jurassic and Cretaceous apatite U-Pb age groups, which we interpret as derived from the Transantarctic Moun- tains (igneous and metamorphic rocks of the Cambro-Ordovician Ross Orogeny, and volcanic rocks related to the Early Jurassic Ferrar volcanic event) and Marie Byrd Land / West Antarctica (Permo-Triassic magmatic arc and widespread Cretaceous batholiths).
