Abstract

We apply the algebraic-geometric techniques developed for the study of mappings which have the singularity confinement property to mappings which are integrable through linearisation. The main difference with respect to the previous studies is that the linearisable mappings have generically unconfined singularities. Despite this fact we are able to provide a complete description of the dynamics of these mappings and derive rigorously their growth properties., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures

Patients and methods: Twenty patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (12 male and 8 female; mean ± SD age, 57.0±7.1 years) were included in this study. The patients were treated for 8 weeks with the concomitant administration of tafluprost and timolol gel-forming solution (evening dosing). At the end of this period, the patients underwent 24-hour IOP monitoring (measured at 21:00, 01:00, 05:00, 09:00, 13:00 and 17:00). IOP was measured with Goldmann applanation tonometer (GAT) and Icare PRO at sitting position at all timepoints and additionally, at supine position with Icare PRO tonometer at 01:00 and 05:00. The patients were then all switched to TAF/TIM-FC treatment (evening dosing). After 8 weeks, the 24-hour IOP monitoring was repeated. Results: Nineteen patients completed the study. The mean 24-hour IOPs in the concomitant and TAF/TIM-FC phases were 13.8±2.7 vs 13.3±2.8 mmHg (P=0.0033) with the GAT in the sitting position and 13.96±2.56 vs 13.48±2.56 mmHg (P=0.0120) with the Icare PRO in habitual positions. In comparison with the concomitant phase, significantly lower IOP was observed for the TAF/TIM-FC phase at 21:00 and 01:00 with the GAT and at 01:00 with the Icare PRO. In addition, the maximum IOP and fluctuations in IOP in habitual positions were lower for the TAF/TIM-FC phase than for the concomitant phase. Conclusion: TAF/TIM-FC showed a stable 24-hour IOP-lowering effect and was equally or more effective than the concomitant use of tafluprost and timolol gel, both when sitting and when in habitual positions. 16. The role of input modality and vocabulary knowledge in alignment in reading-to-speaking tasks

Abstract

Our study investigated lexical alignment in a reading-to-speaking task, in two modalities of input text presentation. We also explored whether participants’ vocabulary knowledge moderates the effects of text modality and difficulty on lexical alignment. We addressed these questions by analyzing lexical overlap in the speech of 128 Japanese learners of English. Students were asked to summarize the information given in two different expository informational texts that were presented in reading-only mode and in reading-while-listening mode, using a within-subject design. The results showed that participants produced fewer overlapping 5-grams in reading-while-listening condition than in the reading-only condition. However for shorter n-grams no significant differences between modes of exposure were found. Students with larger vocabulary size produced less lexical overlap with the input text at the level of single words. We discuss the implications of the findings of the study for language teaching pedagogy.

Abstract

Rapid growth in population, industry, urbanization and intensive agriculture have led to soil and water pollution by various contaminants. Nanoremediation has become one of the most successful emerging technologies for cleaning up soil and water contaminants due to the high reactivity of nanomaterials (NMs). Numerous publications are available on the use of NMs for removing contaminants, and the efficiencies are often improved by modifications of NMs with polymers, clay minerals, zeolites, activated carbon, and biochar. This paper critically reviews the current state-of-the-art NMs used for sustainable soil and water remediation, focusing on their applications in novel remedial approaches, such as adsorption/filtration, catalysis, photodegradation, electro-nanoremediation, and nano-bioremediation. Insights into process performances, modes of deployment, potential environmental risks and their management, and the consequent societal and economic implications of using NMs for soil and water remediation indicate that widespread acceptance of nanoremediation technologies requires not only a substantial advancement of the underpinning science and engineering aspects themselves, but also practical demonstrations of the effectiveness of already recognized approaches at real world in-situ conditions. New research involving green nanotechnology, nano-bioremediation, electro-nanoremediation, risk assessment of NMs, and outreach activities are needed to achieve successful applications of nanoremediation at regional and global scales.

25. Significant Improvement in Electrical Conductivity and Figure of Merit of Nanoarchitectured Porous SrTiO3 by La Doping Optimization

Abstract

SrTiO3 is a well-studied n-type metal oxide based thermoelectric (TE) material. In this work, the first-principles calculation of La-doped SrTiO3 has been performed using the density functional theory. In addition, high TE properties of bulk SrTiO3 material have been achieved by introducing nanoscale porosity and optimizing carrier concentration by La doping. The X-ray diffraction, atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry results show that La has been doped successfully into the lattice. The scanning electron microscopy images confirm that all the samples have nearly similar nanoscale porosities. The significant enhancement of electrical conductivity over the broad temperature range has been observed through optimization of La doping. Additionally, the samples possess very low thermal conductivity, which is speculated because of the nanoscale porosity of the samples. Because of this dual mechanism of doping optimization and nanoscale porosity, there is a remarkable improvement in power factor, 1 mW/m2K from 650 to 800 K, and figure of merit, zT of 0.26 at 850 K, of the sample, 22 at. % La-doped SrTiO3.

Abstract

We develop a class of dynamic stochastic general equilibrium models with nominal rigidities\ud and we introduce default risk in the model. We find that if productivity changes are observed,\ud policy authorities should be aware of default risk, although being aware of such risk is not\ud very important following government expenditure changes. Welfare gains from awareness of\ud default risk are nonnegligible if productivity changes, although welfare gains from awareness\ud of default risk are tiny following government expenditure changes.

Abstract

This report describes a specific piece of work conducted by ImageCat as part of the METEOR (Modelling Exposure Through Earth Observation Routines) project, led by British Geological Survey (BGS) with collaborative partners Oxford Policy Management Limited (OPM), SSBN Limited, The Disaster Management Department, Office of the Prime Minister – Tanzania (DMD), The Global Earthquake Model Foundation (GEM), The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT), ImageCat and the National Society for Earthquake Technology (NSET) – Nepal. The 3-year project was funded by UK Space Agency through their International Partnership Programme, details of which can be located in the Foreword, and was completed in 2021. The project aimed to provide an innovative solution to disaster risk reduction, through development of an innovative methodology of creating exposure data from Earth Observation (EO) imagery to identify development patterns throughout a country and provide detailed information when combined with population information. Level 1 exposure was developed for all 47 least developed countries on the OECD DAC list, referred to as ODA least-developed countries in the METEOR documentation, with open access to data and protocols for their development. New national detailed exposure and hazard datasets were also generated for the focus countries of Nepal and Tanzania and the impact of multiple hazards assessed for the countries. Training on product development and potential use for Disaster Risk Reduction was performed within these countries with all data made openly available on data platforms for wider use both within country and worldwide. This report (M3.2/P) is the second report generated by ImageCat for the work package EO data for exposure development (WP3) led by ImageCat.
