The essay explores the description of Otherness in the autobiographies of three former Christian captives from the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. In these texts, authors described their experiences in the Islamic societies where they were enslaved, offering insights into Islamic geography and culture. However, these descriptions were also influenced by prevailing ideas and the authors' need to align their narratives with the hegemonic discourse, thereby perpetuating and crafting biased depictions of the Other. Understanding the motivations that guided the construction of memory in these autobiographies is crucial for a comprehensive grasp of their objectives. These objectives are closely intertwined with the authors' experiences in Islamic societies and their aspirations for reintegration into Christian ones, where they produced their writings after escaping captivity. The study explores the possibilities of using computer and corpus tools in the interpretation of texts of the genre of book of notes and extracts; these are documents consisting of extracts and modified excerpts from contemporary press and literature, records of the author's own thoughts, etc. Samuel Ferjenčík's manuscript is a Germanlanguage document by a Slovak author intended for private use; cited or adapted passages are usually given without any reference to the source. The paper introduces the problems of automatic identification of the source base, which relate to the application of OCR and content similarity detection tools. It discusses the results of text matching, which revealed several manipulations of source texts, especially substitutions, indicating attitudes and priority problems in the author's thought-world. It further interprets the results of the use of the Sketch Engine corpus manager tools by which the frequency of occurrence of key terms and their collocability were investigated, paying special attention to substituted words. The paper is an example of the application of computer and corpus-linguistics methods to the interpretation of literary texts, which is represented by a number of current studies in the field of digital humanities. The proposed approaches are applicable to research on other books of notes and extracts, topical in the context of research trends related to egodocuments, as well as to textual research on monu ments of other genres. - Abstract
This essay aims to report an interview granted by the Sardinian writer Maria Giacobbe who became famous at the beginning thanks to her Diario di una maestrina, an «ego-document» about her initial phase of teaching in rural and poor territories in North Sardinia. Many aspects of her life and the genesis of his well-known Diary help to understand better her social commitment and underline crucial aspects that are particularly explanatory of his pedagogical method. She taught during the postwar period, and she saw the situation first-hand of extreme poverty and illiteracy. Furthermore, in many Sardinian countries the instruction hadn’t a value. Although nobody believed in her students, Maria Giacobbe, in her way, created a harmonious and dynamic dialogue between students and her, considering them respectable of care and attention. - Abstract
The general objective of this study is to analyze aspects of autobiographical identity contained in the Diary of Recollections of the Viscountess of Arcozelo, a woman educated in the standards of what was allowed to the female gender belonging to the Brazilian eighteenth-century elite, to become a good wife, mother, and house manager. The Viscountess of Arcozelo’s Diary was written throughout the year 1887, and in it are recorded the events of her daily life. The historiographical operation carried out takes this egodocument as a source, in qualitative research that seeks to highlight the practices used to teach in that time and context. The conclusions are centered on the reading possibilities that the egodocument admits in relation to its protagonist, not disregarding the materiality of the object, in the format of a modern diary, and the information it has to offer about female education. NAZI Germany, 1933-1945 ,LITTERATEURS ,WORLD War II ,INTERWAR Period (1918-1939) ,DIASPORA ,SELF-presentation - Abstract
The article presents the now-forgotten figure of Sergej Vojcehovskij (1900–1984), an important figure in the social and literary life of the Russian diaspora in interwar Warsaw. As a declared monarchist, an implacable enemy of the Bolsheviks and the Soviet Union, Vojcehovskij devoted his life to fighting the communists and helping Russian emigrants. He was active in many émigré organisations, primarily in the Russian Social Committee (Rosyjski Komitet Społeczny, 1931–1944). As its head, he represented the interests of the Russian diaspora before the authorities of the Second Polish Republic and then the Third Reich. The dark side of his activity was a collaboration with Nazi Germany, with whom Vojcehovskij cooperated, counting on their help in overthrowing Stalin. The article’s main aim is to analyse Vojcehovskij’s memories (The Episodes, 1978). Their composition, structure, the principle of selection of life material, the method of self-presentation of the creator and genological heterogeneity are discussed. Vojcehovskij’s monarchist views influenced all these aspects of his memoirs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AUTOBIOGRAPHY , *HISTORY of education , *HISTORICAL source material , *HISTORIOGRAPHY , *ARCHIVES , *POWER (Social sciences) - Abstract
As an introduction to the Special Issue 'Power relations, preservation and voice. Writing histories of education with autobiographical materials,' this article reviews the state of the art of autobiographical work in history of education research. Moreover, it argues that although writing histories of education with autobiographical materials is not a 'new' phenomenon, incorporating yet unknown or overlooked sources can bring fresh insights and perspectives to the field. This arises from the potential of autobiographical materials to complement reigning understandings of the past with alternate narratives. Yet, this introduction also points to challenges in working with such materials – particularly when we consider their work in constructing, presenting and performing a particular self. In this introduction, we start by discussing the term 'autobiographical materials' and tracing the development of using these kinds of materials in research. We then go on to explore various theoretical and methodological issues around working with autobiographical materials, in relation to production, preservation, access and the intellectual frameworks that we as researchers choose to employ. Finally, we introduce the articles that comprise this Special Issue. As a whole, this Issue offers a careful and considered re-visitation of the challenges and potentials inherent to working with autobiographical materials, further enriching the ongoing debate over power relations, preservation and voice when writing histories of education. - Abstract
The main goal of publishing this source is to make available a document of the type that remains unexplored and unrecognized, especially within the field of Jewish studies. The nineteenth-century testament of Tekla Kronenberg deepens our knowledge about the Kronenberg family in general and its female members in particular. In notary deeds we find primarily male testaments. It is therefore relevant to publicize a female testament which may prove helpful in historical research on women. It is possible to examine this document from various perspectives, such as the value of charity, the attitude toward converts, the extent of social bonds (what things were left and to whom? were inheritors mainly male, or female?). In addition, an analysis of the means of expressing emotions regarding particular persons mentioned in the testament enables us to make a quality assessment of family bonds. As a result, it sheds new light on a Jewish family's life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes the methodological and contextual bases of the research project «Cuba and Andalucía in the 19th century: a study of linguistic and cultural ties from the Digital Humanities». The general objective is the creation and subsequent treatment, with the methodology of the Digital Humanities, of a corpus of Cuban documentation from the 19th century, its typological cataloguing, textual study and sociolinguistic analysis. The originality of the proposal consists both in the rescue of unpublished documentation («documents taken from the enemy») and in the follow-up of innovative ideas of the time in ego-documents and press.

International audience; The automatization of the processing of documents oriented towards online publication and exploration by the humanities increases the rapidity of treatments like the transcription, but they should also be an opportunity to make the experimentation and the resulting corpora sustainable and reusable. The DAHN project (Dispositif de soutien à l’Archivistique et aux Humanités Numériques) relies on a joint interdisciplinary collaboration between Inria, the EHESS and the University of Le Mans. By taking the example of egodocuments, the project aims to create a ready-to-use digital and scientific publishing pipeline going from the material archive to an online publication. In this presentation, we introduce our method and guidelines for the processing of non-digital-native textual documents using open-source and easily hackable tools that guarantee visibility across an accessible pipeline, thus challenging the notions of a black box or scattered tools which tend to be hard to maintain in the long run.

Straipsnyje, remiantis projektinės veiklos ir fundamentinių tyrimų rezultatų analize, aptariami paskutinių penkerių metų egodokumentų tyrimų pasiekimai ir perspektyvios studijų kryptys, ryškėjančios europinėje mokslo erdvėje ir Lietuvoje. Lietuvoje apie 2010 metus į mokslinį diskursų įvedus naujų terminų egodokumentas, pastebimos sistemingesnės raštijos pirmuoju asmeniu studijos (projektai LEGODOK ir „Asmeninės lietuvių rašomosios kalbos duomenų bazės (AKdb) kūrimas“). Lietuvoje bendrųja tyrimų tendencija laikytinos elito savimonės ir tapatumo raiškos studijos, į tyrimų laukų įtraukiančios naujus šaltinius (album amicorum). Tarpdalykiniai „apačių“ tyrimai veržliai plėtojami Šiaurės Europoje. Villa Vignoni forumas inspiravo solidžias publikacijas, skirtas asmens, šeimos ir bendruomenių tapatumams transkultūrinėje perspektyvoje. Kaimyninėje Lenkijoje leidžiami egodokumentiniai istorijos šaltiniai ir fundamentiniai tyrimai neretai aprėpia ir senosios Lietuvos problematikų. Daroma išvada, kad plečiant tarptautinį bendradarbiavimų su kaimynais, Lietuvoje tęstini tiek lietuviškos egodokumentikos paveldo kaip kalbinės tapatybės raiškos, tiek transkultūriniai daugiakalbystės ir įvairialypio tapatumo sklaidos modernėjančioje visuomenėje tyrimai. Based on the analysis of project results, the article discusses the achievements in the study of egodocuments over the past five years and the prospective study fields emerging in the European research area and Lithuania. In Lithuania, attention to egodocuments increased in around 2010 after a new term - egodocument - was introduced to scientific discourse; its conceptual adaptation led to more systematic studies of writings in the first person. In addition to the studies published in the framework of the project Egodocumental Heritage of Lithuania (LEGODOK), the project Creation of the Private Written Lithuanian Language Database (AKdb) implemented by the Institute of the Lithuanian Language and its partners deserves a special mention; in the frames of the project, the data of the written Lithuanian language (letters, diaries, memoirs, inscriptions on photographs) are collected and digitalised electronically. In Lithuania, the general research tendency can be considered the studies on self-consciousness and identity expression of the elite (Radziwiłł, Römer) as well as the attempts to add an increasing number of sources to the research field, e.g. memory books (album amicorum) telling about oneself, i.e. the creating person. Traditionally, the so called ‘from below’ studies focusing on non-elite social groups are strong in Lithuania. They include the research of written culture and mentality change associated with national revival related problems. They consider egodocuments (including letters) and their dissemination in the period of early modernity a public rather than private means of communication. Inter-disciplinary ‘from below’ studies are viable in Northern Europe (Anna Kuismin). In Western Europe the Villa Vignoni forum, bringing together Italian, French and German researchers (Giovanni Ciappelli, Franęois-Josephas Ruggiu, Claudia Ulbrich), inspired solid publications dedicated to personal, familial and communal identities in a cross-cultural perspective. The published egodocumentary history sources and the fundamental research carried out in Poland often extend to the issues of old Lithuania (Adam Kucharski, Stanisław Roszak). Therefore, with certain research tendencies coming to the fore, the article makes a conclusion that by expanding international cooperation with our neighbours, the research of the egodocumentary heritage of Lithuania as expression of linguistic identity as well as cross-cultural research of multilingualism and dissemination of multidimensional identity in the modernising society should be continued in Lithuania.

Axel Honneth's Theory of Recognition emerges in the mid-twentieth century as a model of interpretation of social phenomena. We can list the Personal Archives and the reasons that its owners took to preserve their documents as one of the possible phenomena to be studied through this theory. Assuming this possibility, this article aims to demonstrate the relationship between the Archival Theories and the Theory of Recognition when studying a specific Personal Archive. The chosen collection was the one of Dr. Jose Maria de Souza guarded by the Evandro Chagas Institute for containing a diversity of documentary typologies which allowed a wide field for analysis and interpretation. It is conceptualized Archive and Personal Archive and it is based, based on the archival literature, the reasons that lead someone to preserve their documents. The Theory of Recognition and the collection of Dr. José Maria de Souza are contextualized. Ends with the analysis of the collection under study having as a template the Theory of Recognition.

In April 1816, count Carl-Joseph of Clary-Aldringen left the Hapsburg court and began a journey in Italy. From May to August 1816 he stayed in Naples. The count was the heir of a princely family that possessed vast estates in northern Bohemia and palaces in Prague and Vienna. His letters and diaries, mostly written in French, provide a fascinating record. During his stay among his friends, acquaintances and Neapolitan society, he climbed the Vesuvius. That ascent became almost required at the end of the eighteenth century, and was familiar to the many readers of travel literature published in Europe. The text presented here shows the complex development of a romantic sensibility through travel diaries that include notes and letters sent to family members but read in Viennese salons. This manner of travel narrative, including details on collective experience, enable us to analyze the world of elites and better understand aristocratic identity at a time of deep social and political changes in Italy and in Europe.

Made available in DSpace on 2018-11-26T15:38:38Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2016-07-01 Academic memorials are documents produced to meet institutional requirements of progression in the teaching career, with the author describing his history, with an emphasis on researchs, publications in indexed journals, activities in postgraduate courses, lectures and production of qualified materials, extension courses and other activities related to their area of expertise. In addition to the candidate's academic merit assessment tool it is also presented as one of the rare moments in which it is legitimate for the intellectual to speak about himself, addressing options, practices, experiences and memories, as experience. Thus, we understand the academic memorial as a form of autobiographical writing that is conditioned by an intellectual and institutional tradition, in which different levels of subjectivity claim a persona, defined, among other things, by the prominence of narrative models that determine presence and absence in the author's report. When joining the Reformation in 1528, the government of the Bernese Republic established a State Church. It also became the guardian of religion and was responsible for the citizens’ salvation. An analysis of Their Excellencies’ mandates — in particular regarding French-speaking areas — shows, beyond the common phrases reminding us of the divine right devolved upon the Magistrate, that they enjoyed power prerogatives directly inspired by the Reformers’ doctrine. In Zwingli’s view of society, an important part was played by parishes. This is the "democratic" leaven in the protestant doctrine. The rejection of all ecclesiastical hierarchy went together with the clear definition of a visible church, represented by a congregation divided, under the leadership of a minister, into parishes. Wasn’t tension inevitably bound to mount between a "Very Christian Magistrate" whose absolutist urge kept increasing throughout the XVIIth century, and parishioners clinging to their communal privileges and able to find in the protestant doctrine reasons to assess and rebel against the Magistrate’s power proportionately to his respect of religion ? The present paper proposes to analyse this tension through an evocation of the Peasants’ War which opposed in 1653 the "Very Christian Magistrate" and his insurgent rural subjects : a conflict in which ministers, far from taking up their parishioners’ demands, resolutely stood on the side of power., Tosato-Rigo Danièle.

The article aims to analyze the egodocuments by Šatrijos Ragana. Using categories defined by Philipe Lejeune which determine autobiography as a genre, Ragana‘ s letters written from 1895 to 1930 (about 400 letters in total) are investigated. The results of the research enables us to speak about an interim genre, i.e. The letter-autobiography, or the sub-genre of the letter; i.e. the epistolar biography. The authenticity of another egodocumentic genre (reminiscences about the author) also relates to letters by Šatrijos Ragana. Egodocumentic texts are written by different people: the letters are written in the first person, and the reminiscences are presented from the perspective of other people. As a genre the letter shows great flexibility. It might interact with both fiction (e.g. The writer‘s letter-autobiography to Juozas Tumas-Vaižgantas demonstrates that the novella Sename dvare [In the Old Manor] has clear autobiographical motifs) and other egodocumentic genres, memories in this case, in order to specify some parts of an epistolary text or artistic factography. The autobiographical data of the writer’s life denotes certain experiences in works of fiction. Šatrijos Ragana’s letters provide not only factual life information, but are also valuable as the story of a personality. Memoirs also supplement the image of the personality revealed in letters. Writer‘s letters are considered to be the unique egodocuments which demonstrate not only the history of an individual and a nation, but also provide proof for the argument that there are theoretical interfaces between genres in egodocuments.

- Abstract
Summary Although there are quite a few soldiers who write autobiographies about their deployment experiences, a comprehensive profile does not exist that provides reliable, quantifiable insight into 21st century soldier-authors that exceeds the Anglo-American view, especially when it comes to (self-published) books. This study makes up for these deficiencies by studying all non-fiction, autobiographical books, first published between 2001 and 2010 in Dutch, English or German in the US, the UK, Canada, Germany and the Netherlands that (mainly) deal with the deployment experiences of military personnel in Afghanistan and are intended for the public at large. It provides answers to four questions: 1. Who are the soldiers who write autobiographical books about their deployment in Afghanistan? 2. Who are their publishers? 3. What do they write about? 4. Why do they say they write? To answer these questions, this study uses statistical analysis in combination with qualitative descriptive coding techniques to provide a cross-cultural analysis of five different Western countries. It is an interdisciplinary study, using and combining theories and methods from five different fields: sociology, history, literature, psychology and anthropology. One of the conclusions from this research is that in the countries studied there is a very strong relationship between the number of soldiers that have been deployed to Afghanistan and the number of books produced. For every 6,000 soldiers in Afghanistan, one extra mission-related autobiographical book is published. Another main conclusion is that the soldier-authors of these books are only partly (when it comes to branch of service and gender) representative of the average soldier. Particularly noticeable is that where the average soldier is deployed with his own unit, the average soldier-author is often (50%) individually deployed. This result was predicted by what is called in this study the ‘fringe writer hypothesis’. In some countri
