Pregnancy is an ideal time to promote the primary prevention of early childhood caries. It is crucial to have a child's first dental examination in the first year of life. The aim of this study was to find out how the School for future parents and the child's first dental examination affect children's oral habits. A specialist pediatric dentist was involved in the implementation of the School for future parents and the courses and on timely care for the good oral health of the child. We examined all one- and two-year-olds whose parents responded positively to a dental examination for their child. During the first examination, we considered attendance at the School, how the parents booked the dental examination, what the child drinks when thirsty, how many times a day they brush their children's teeth and toothpaste use. During the second examination, we considered what the child drinks when thirsty, how many times a day the parents brush their children's teeth and toothpaste use. The results showed that participants in the School were more likely to book their children's first preventive, consultative dental examination ( p < 0.001), brush their children's teeth, and use toothpaste ( p < 0.001) than parents who did not attend the school. However, there was no difference between the two groups regarding what parents gave their children to drink when they were thirsty ( p = 0.69). In the child's second year, all the parents used toothpaste, brushed their children's teeth more often, and their children drank sweet drinks more often than before the first examination ( p < 0.001). We have succeeded in raising awareness of good oral habits among parents and children (the frequency of brushing children's teeth and the using toothpaste), but not changed the behavior in the type of drinking against thirst., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest., (©2023 The Author(s). Background: The quality of oral health can be estimated by its own indicators, one of which is the Decayed-Missing-Filled index (DMF-T for permanent teeth and dmf-t for deciduous teeth index). Caries can be prevented and successfully controlled by comparing clinical and epidemiological data. The basic prerequisite for this approach is data collection through systematic examinations, the results of which are a starting point for a prevention programme. The aim of the study is to define the oral health of elementary schoolchildren in one municipality of Slovenia, focusing on 6-, 12- and 15-year-old children., Methods: A prospective epidemiological study of elementary school children (aged 6, 12 and 15) of municipality Murska Sobota, Slovenia, was performed over four years. Data were obtained from the dental records of elementary schoolchildren acquired from a specialist in paediatric dentistry. Collected data included age, gender, the number of carious teeth and tooth fillings per child in deciduous and permanent teeth, dmf-t/DMF-T index and the percentage of primary and secondary healthy children. Statistical analysis was performed using SPPS 25., Results: Data from schoolchildren were used (1256 girls, 1281 boys). The number of carious deciduous teeth per person in 6-year-olds (3.2-3.8) was higher than the number of (carious) permanent teeth in 12-year-olds (0.3-1.2). The number of filings per person in deciduous teeth in 6-year-olds (0.5-0.6) was lower than it was in permanent teeth in 12-year-olds (0.3-1.2). Dmf-t index in 6-year-olds was from 4 to 4.6; DMF-T index in 12-year-olds were from 1.2 to 2.2 and in 15-year-olds from 2.4 to 3.8. The percentage of primary healthy children was lower for older children, but the percentage of secondary healthy children was higher for older children., Conclusions: Monitoring oral health is important, and school has an important role in it; however, caries control has yet to be successful., (© 2022 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Aim: Dental malocclusions present the third-highest prevalence among oral pathologies. The occlusion is evaluated in primary, mixed and permanent dentition. Most orthodontic patients are treated in the early permanent dentition. Early detection of dental anomalies is important to prevent complications and can have short- and long-term benefits. The aepidemiological data on the prevalence of malocclusion are an important determinant in planning appropriate orthodontic services. Dentists have the responsibility to recognise, diagnose, and treat or refer anomalies. Data from previous studies showed that the incidence of malocclusions expands from 11% to 93%. The aim of the study is to find out the prevalence and types of malocclusions in schoolchildren during four school years and how they were registered by four general dentists in their offices., Methods: The research was conducted over four consecutive school years during systematic examinations of schoolchildren from 1st to 9th grade. All primary schools (15 schools) in the area of Health Center Murska Sobota, Slovenia were included in the study. Dentists registered the presence and type of malocclusion. They prepared statistical data on the percentage of children with malocclusion and the percentage of represented malocclusion, as well as the statistical difference between genders., Conclusion: There is a high percentage of malocclusion in 9th graders (15-year-old), about 50%, and a low number of children undergoing orthodontic therapy.
