Abstract

The measurement of the direction of WIMP-induced nuclear recoils is a compelling but technologically challenging strategy to provide an unambiguous signature of the detection of Galactic dark matter. Most directional detectors aim to reconstruct the dark-matter-induced nuclear recoil tracks, either in gas or solid targets. The main challenge with directional detection is the need for high spatial resolution over large volumes, which puts strong requirements on the readout technologies. In this paper we review the various detector readout technologies used by directional detectors. In particular, we summarize the challenges, advantages and drawbacks of each approach, and discuss future prospects for these technologies., Comment: 58 pages, 26 figures, accepted by Physics Reports

OBJECTIVE: Differences in type 2 diabetes phenotype by age are described, but it is not known whether these differences are seen in a more uniformly defined adult population at a common early stage of care. 14. Ex vivo comparison of three hand sewn end-to-end anastomoses in normal equine jejunum

Abstract

Although single layer techniques are preferred in man and small animals for small intestinal end-to-end anastomoses, double layer techniques are more popular in equine surgery. This study was undertaken to evaluate the ex vivo characteristics of 2 single layer anastomoses in comparison to the traditionally performed double layer anastomosis in equine jejunum.To compare ex vivo: 1) construction time; 2) bursting pressure; and 3) lumen size reduction of 3 suture patterns (double layer simple continuous/Cushing pattern [2C]; single layer Lembert pattern [1L]; and single layer Cushing pattern [1C]) for end-to-end equine jejunojejunostomies.End-to-end jejunojejunostomies were constructed using 2C (n = 7), 1L (n = 7) and 1C (n = 7) in harvested equine jejunum and construction times were recorded. Anastomosed and control segments were distended with gas until failure. Intraluminal pressure at failure and mode of failure were recorded. Lumen size reduction was calculated as a percentage decrease from control jejunum. Results were compared using an ANOVA and P0.05 was considered significant.The 1C anastomoses were faster to construct than the 1L anastomoses, which were faster to construct than the 2C anastomoses. There were no differences in bursting pressures between the different anastomoses and control jejunum. All anastomoses decreased lumen size from control values but there were no differences in lumen reduction between types of anastomoses.Single layer anastomoses are faster to construct than double layer anastomoses, with the 1C being fastest. Single layer anastomoses are as strong and result in comparable lumen size reduction as traditional 2C anastomoses.As the 1C anastomosis results in less exposed potentially adhesiogenic suture material than the 1L while providing adequate strength and similar luminal size reduction, the 1C may be better for equine small intestine anastomosis and further in vivo studies are warranted.

Abstract

An industry development program, Designing Futures, has engaged design practitioners in new development approaches to evolve their work and advance the craft and design sector over a decade. This paper describes the context, development and evolution of a cluster-led model, the Designing Futures Cluster Program, aimed at building capacity in the craft and design field in Western Australia. Through a framework encouraging groups of practitioners to collaborate, it provides design, production, management and marketing mentoring and assistance. The Cluster Program is set in the context of the cultural and socio-economic contribution that creative industries can make to communities, and the impacts of policy and funding on fostering creative futures. Case study and action research methodologies were combined for the research, which resulted in a model. Using the results a comprehensive ‘manual’ was developed to articulate the model and guide future delivery of the program. The case study illustrates how cluster development enables increased productivity within creative practice, by mentoring and fostering links and professional networks with a range of industry representatives. The model, which has been proven to accelerate learning and professional growth of participants, is being explored for wider application.

Abstract

An approach for measuring the cognitive complexity of visual displays is discussed and applied to a dynamic display of avionic information. A semantic network formalism is used to model two interrelated knowledge systems, world knowledge and display knowledge. The information the operator receives during training about the general display format characteristics and the task requirements, along with other previously stored information, constitutes world knowledge. The semantic content of a particular configuration of information encountered during task performance constitutes display knowledge. Four orthogonal predictor measures of cognitive complexity were derived from the networks. In an experiment three of the orthogonal predictors were significantly correlated with task performance. After averaging across operators, the three significant predictors accounted for 99% of the variation of display effectiveness. Results indicate that a model of cognitive complexity based on a semantic network formalism may provide a useful technique for quantitatively evaluating the quality of competing display format concepts. Abstract

This paper considers the issue of how advances in Electronic Technology are expected to impact cockpit engineering for future airborne weapon systems. It briefly surveys aircrew functions in an effort to isolate peak periods of operator workload, and suggests ways new technology may be applied to yield improved aircrew, and hence system, performance. Accompanying this analysis is the presentation of a procedure that can be used in making decisions about what cockpit functions to automate. The implications of advances in avionics technologies on conceptual design practices regarding the crew station, aircrew training, and the development of new training devices are also reviewed. Finally, current and emerging interface technologies are briefly surveyed. Based on this survey and analysis, some general recommendations are offered.

Abstract

The effects of cyclotron irradiation upon the hardness, the stress strain relationship, and the electrical resistance of thorium 347, stainless steel, and zirconium have been determined. The irradiations were carried out below 100 deg C on the 60 inch Crocker cyclotron. The electrical resistance measurements were made at -146 deg C and other measurements were made at room temperature. The results indicate that the changes in the properties due to irradiation tend to increase in magnitude up to a saturation point. The change in the thermal conductivity due to the damage has also been estimated by calculation. No changes in the metallurgical structure were noticed.

Abstract

This trial was conducted to determine the effect of the addition of 2 or 4% oleic acid to an hydrogenated fat coating applied to an experimental supplement with 55 or 58% lysine sulfate on ruminal escape and intestinal absorption of Lys. Two lactating Holstein cows (103 d in milk and 45.1 kg/d of milk) previously fitted with ruminal and duodenal cannulas were individually housed and fed a corn silage-based ration. In situ and mobile bag techniques were utilized to evaluate the 4 test products. Twenty bags of each product were incubated for 16 h in each cow to determine ruminal escape. After ruminal incubation, products were repackaged, soaked in pepsin/HCl solution for 2 h, inserted into the duodenum, and subsequently collected in the feces. The percentage of dry matter and fat escaping the rumen decreased as oleic acid increased from 2 to 4% or as the proportion of supplemental Lys increased. An interaction was observed because of a greater reduction of N and Lys escaping ruminal fermentation and flowing to the small intestine for the product with 58% supplemental Lys and 4% oleic acid compared with the other products. No differences were observed in intestinal digestibility of dry matter, N, Lys, or fat or in the amount of Lys digested in the small intestine. Increasing the proportion of oleic acid in the coating applied to supplemental Lys increased ruminal degradation. Abstract

Forty Holstein cows were used in an 8-wk randomized trial to evaluate the effects of feeding combinations of forages with improved fiber digestibility on performance during early lactation. Treatments were arranged as a 2 × 2 factorial to include silage from normal (NCS) or brown midrib (BMR) corn silage with or without 10% Tifton 85 bermudagrass hay (T85). In a simultaneous digestion trial, degradation and passage kinetics and ruminal fermentation parameters were evaluated in a 4 × 4 Latin square design trial using late-lactation Holstein cows fitted with ruminal cannulas. Dry matter intake (DMI) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) intake were greater with BMR than with NCS; however, milk yield and composition were similar among corn silage types. Inclusion of T85 reduced milk yield but supported higher milk fat percentage, resulting in similar yields of energy-corrected milk. Blood glucose concentrations were higher for BMR compared with NCS, and inclusion of T85 increased blood urea N concentrations. Treatments did not alter liquid or solid phase passage rates or rumen turnover. Corn silage type did not affect ruminal pH or volatile fatty acid concentrations, but inclusion of T85 increased pH and molar proportion of acetate but decreased butyrate. Molar proportions of propionate were greater for NCS and T85 compared with BMR and T85, resulting in an interaction. Results of this trial indicate that combinations of forages with improved fiber digestibility can be used to support intake and performance of cows during early lactation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The measurement of the direction of WIMP-induced nuclear recoils is a compelling but technologically challenging strategy to provide an unambiguous signature of the detection of Galactic dark matter. Most directional detectors aim to reconstruct the dark-matter-induced nuclear recoil tracks, either in gas or solid targets. The main challenge with directional detection is the need for high spatial resolution over large volumes, which puts strong requirements on the readout technologies. In this paper we review the various detector readout technologies used by directional detectors.
