Diese Arbeit befasst sich mit dem Zusammenhang von Bevölkerungs- und Wirtschaftswachstum im Spannungsfeld von natürlichen Ressourcen und technologischem Fortschritt. Um der Frage auf den Grund zu gehen, ob Bevölkerungswachstum Chance oder Bedrohung für wirtschaftliche Entwicklung darstellt, wird dessen Bedeutung anhand der Theorien von Thomas Robert Malthus und Ester Boserup untersucht. Während Malthus davon ausgeht, dass sich Wirtschaft und Bevölkerung immer nur abhängig vom Ressourcenwachstum entwickeln können, sieht er in Bevölkerungswachstum eine Bedrohung für den Lebensstandard. Boserup dreht in ihrer Theorie diesen Zusammenhang um und sieht Bevölkerungswachstum als Motor für ökonomische und technologische Entwicklung. Diese zwei theoretischen Strömungen werden anhand von drei Modellen verglichen und deren Unterschiede evaluiert. In einem empirischen Vergleich werden die Modellprognosen, Daten zur Entwicklung von Ressourcenverbrauch, Bevölkerung, Technologie und Wirtschaftswachstum gegenübergestellt., This master thesis investigates the relationship between population dynamics and economic growth, with a special interest in their behaviour considering natural resources and technology. The main theories consist of the ideas of Thomas Robert Malthus and Ester Boserup. Due to the scarcity of natural resources (mainly land and food) Malthus considers population and economic growth to be dependent on natural resources, with population growth being a threat to a adequate standard of living. Ester Boserup inherits the opposite position to Malthus, postulating that population is not a dependent but rather an explaining variable. In her opinion population growth is the source of technological innovation that increases the production capacities of natural resources. These two opposing theories are compared and analysed though three different growth Models. The model predictions are compared to empiric data for resource use, population growth, technology and economic growth to evaluate the predicions.
