What work strategies must university professors adopt to guarantee the service of higher education and even go beyond the role universities have formally established for them? This article aims to analyze the strategy of job crafting -- specifically, how it influences the job crafting strategies of approach vs. avoidance in prosocial service behavior, with engagement as a mediating variable. To achieve this goal, we analyze the behavior of 1068 university professors in Faculties of Economics and Business at Spanish public universities. The results suggest that university professors who expand their work role and who expand socially develop more prosocial behavior in the service they deliver. The job crafting strategy of avoidance, in contrast, influences prosocial behavior negatively. Further, engagement acts as a mediating variable in the relationship between professors' job crafting and their prosocial service behavior. These results are relevant to higher education institutions, which must work constantly to adopt workplace strategies and programs to improve service performance. The study results may help universities to achieve professors who are more committed to their job functions and responsibilities.

Abstract Background Choroid plexuses regulate the exchanges between the blood and the CSF, and provide trophic factors necessary to brain development. They also express detoxifying enzymes that protect the developing brain from harmful substances. Targeting the Nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2) signaling pathway may enhance the detoxification capabilities of choroid plexuses that are linked to glutathione conjugation, but little is known about mechanisms of enzyme induction in this tissue. Methods Rat pups were treated with dimethylfumarate and the subcellular localization of Nrf2 was analyzed in the choroidal tissue by confocal imaging. Glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity was assessed ex vivo in the choroidal tissue, and 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene, a toxicant and prototypic GST substrate, was used to evaluate in vivo the efficiency of the glutathione-dependent enzymatic barrier function of choroid plexuses. Nrf2 knockout rat pups were used to establish the Nrf2 dependency of GST induction in this tissue. Results We show an early postnatal expression of Nrf2 in the rat choroidal tissue. Treatment of rat pups with dimethylfumarate triggers Nrf2 nuclear translocation in choroidal epithelial cells. This treatment increases GST activity in choroid plexus, and reduces the blood-to-CSF permeation of 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene. In Nrf2 knockout rats, the constitutive activity of the choroidal glutathione-dependent detoxifying machinery is maintained, but the efficacy of dimethylfumarate to induce glutathione conjugation in the choroid plexuses is strongly reduced, indicating that dimethylfumarate acts mainly through the Nrf2 signaling pathway. Conclusions This work shows that the glutathione-dependent detoxifying function of the blood-CSF barrier can be pharmacologically enhanced through the Nrf2 signaling pathway to better protect the neural fluid environment from drug and toxic accumulation during the neonatal period.

El presente trabajo pretende averiguar la frecuencia de uso de palabras y expresiones de origen caló en el léxico español. Para ello, se ha realizado una encuesta cuantitativa a habitantes de la región de Murcia de las tres principales clases sociales, denominadas alta, media y trabajadora. Así, podremos saber si los murcianos conocen los términos escogidos y, al mismo tiempo, con qué frecuencia los emplean. En cuanto a la parte teórica, abarcamos las dos posturas sociológicas más importantes sobre la clase social, la diferencia entre los conceptos de jerga y argot, la contextualización de la equívoca relación de los gitanos con los delincuentes, y, por último, un apartado relativo a los estudios sobre los gitanismos en el español. La parte práctica, por el contrario, incluye un desarrollo de la encuesta (corpus, modelo de clase social y diseño), los resultados desglosados, los resultados generales y las conclusiones obtenidas a raíz de estos.

Abstract Background Cancer-treatment toxicity is common and symptoms must be identified quickly and accurately. Since symptom reporting during consultations is hampered by time constraints and patient/oncologist biases, patient-reported outcome-measure (PROM) questionnaires are useful. A strong shift to at-home cancer treatment has led to growing interest in remote symptom monitoring via electronic-PROMs (ePROMs). However, because PROMs are generally designed for medical-staff use, ePROMs must be adapted to patient comprehension/abilities. Here, to meet the oncological-healthcare needs of our region, we developed QuestOnco, a mobile-phone ePROM application. It is based on the symptom descriptions and severity grades of the PRO-CTCAE PROM and is designed for real-time on-demand reporting of 34 common or life-threatening cancer-treatment symptoms. This study describes the development of QuestOnco and its content validation relative to two comparators: PRO-CTCAE and the medical records. Methods The cohort study was conducted in a tertiary-care hospital in 2021 and consisted of two stages. Stage I assessed the comprehensibility of QuestOnco for patients: 24 cancer-therapy patients were asked to try the application for 30 min and then underwent semi-structured cognitive interviews. Stage II tested QuestOnco-content validity against the comparators: patients starting a ~ 6-week cancer-therapy cycle were asked to use QuestOnco in an on-demand fashion and to complete weekly paper PRO-CTCAEs. Total QuestOnco, PRO-CTCAE, and medical-record symptom reports were compared in terms of symptom and symptom-severity frequencies. Severity concordance of each reported symptom was assessed by Kendall’s tau-b rank-correlation coefficients. Results In the second round of 12 Stage-I patients (total Stage-I enrollment rate = 100%), 0% reported comprehension difficulties. 110 patients were recruited for Stage II (enrollment rate = 23%). QuestOnco, PRO-CTCAE, and the medical records detected 85%, 100%, and 62% of the target symptoms at least once, respectively, and reported grade-1, -2, -3, and -4 toxicities with similar frequencies (56–67%, 23–32%, 6–10%, and 2–3%, respectively). Overall symptom-severity concordance was moderate with PRO-CTCAE (tau-b = + 0.21, range = -0.03 to + 0.38) and strong with the medical records (tau-b = + 0.33, range = -0.01 to + 0.61). Few remarkable discrepancies were observed. Conclusions The QuestOnco application was well-understood by patients and demonstrated good content validity compared to its parent PROM and the medical records. Summary: Accurately assessing flap volume and thickness is a crucial aspect of breast reconstruction using the deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap, especially in challenging cases such as thin or large-breasted women or bilateral reconstruction. To address this, we present an innovative image processing tool utilizing computed tomography angiography (CTA) to measure DIEP flap volume and thickness. Our approach incorporates an elliptical equation validated on DIEP reconstruction patients. Preoperative abdominal CTA images were obtained from 70 patients who underwent DIEP flap breast reconstruction at Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge from 2017 to 2021. The image processing tool was employed for preoperative quantification, utilizing elliptical approximations, to determine the volume to be harvested and assess the central thickness of the flap. Subsequently, a non-parametric statistical retrospective analysis was conducted to examine these parameters in relation to immediate complications. The mean maximum recruitable volume (MRV) was 1017.15 ± 325.51 cm³, with a mean thickness of 3.65 ± 1.14 cm. No significant correlation was found between postoperative complications and MRV or thickness values. The processing tool offers a reliable solution for accurately measuring the volume and thickness of the DIEP flap from CTA images, aiding surgeons in breast reconstruction decision-making. This innovative approach enhances surgical planning by addressing quantitative values of thickness and volume of the DIEP flap, which is critical for accurate flap assessment.

Background: Pediatric illnesses not only impose physical challenges on affected children, but also profoundly impact their emotional well-being. Understanding how parents respond to their children’s psychological distress during medical experiences is crucial for enhancing the overall support provided to these families. Aim: This study evaluated the internal structure of the Parental Response Styles Questionnaire (PRSQ), designed to differentiate parental responses to psychological distress in children with pediatric illnesses. Methods: A sample of 701 parents of children with medical issues responded to the PRSQ, reporting their different emotional expressions and responses to their children’s expressions of distress during the medical experience. Results: Factor analysis confirmed, in three of the five subsamples, an internal scale structure consisting of four factors: apathy and dysphoria, irritability and rejection, overprotectiveness, and perceived maladjustment. The invariance analyses revealed that congenital heart disease and neurological disorders are more similar in function to each other than pediatric cancer. Parents of children with neurological disorders exhibited a notably insecure pattern of parental responsiveness. Conclusions: In pediatric contexts, parental responses to their children’s emotional distress are significant factors in the process of adaptation. These responses can be measured, differentiated, and, ideally, managed by nurses and other healthcare professionals. The Parental Response Styles Questionnaire (PRSQ) is a promising tool for assessing parental reactions during their children’s treatment, and its structure appears to be particularly robust across diagnoses such as pediatric cancer, congenital heart disease, and neurological disorders.

Introduction: Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) present a significant challenge for healthcare professionals. Nurses, often the first point of contact for patients, may lack essential knowledge in dental trauma first aid, as noted in the existing literature. Objective: To assess the knowledge of traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) among undergraduate nursing students before and after a targeted educational intervention. Materials and Methods: This quasi-experimental study evaluated the effectiveness of an educational intervention involving 300 nursing students from two universities in Seville. The educational intervention was led by specialist dentists. A pre-test survey was administered to assess students’ baseline knowledge. The session included a lecture on TDI management, followed by a simulation in which students practiced emergency splinting techniques for referral to a dentist. A post-test survey was then conducted to measure changes in students’ knowledge and attitudes towards dental trauma. Results: Only 25.4% of students had prior training in dental trauma. After the intervention, there was a significant improvement in students’ self-assessed knowledge of first aid for TDIs (p < 0.05). A high percentage of students also reported increased confidence in their ability to reimplant a tooth. Statistical analysis of pre- and post-intervention survey results showed a substantial increase in average scores (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Nursing students initially exhibited limited knowledge in managing dental trauma but demonstrated a positive attitude toward learning this new skill. The targeted educational intervention significantly enhanced their understanding, underscoring the need to incorporate such training into nursing curricula. By improving nursing students’ competence in managing dental injuries, this training can help better preserve dental structures and improve the prognosis for dental trauma cases.

Introduction: Malignant paragangliomas (M-PGL) are a group of neuroendocrine tumors that originate from chromaffin cells. The most common location for PGL is the head and neck, which comprise 65–70% of all PGL, and the M-PGL accounts for 0.6% of all head and neck cancers. It is a rare tumor, with an incidence of 2–8 per million. Diagnosing PGL can be challenging, and treatment for metastatic disease is usually not curative. Case Presentation: A 66-year-old woman was diagnosed with left cervical pain and laterocervical mass in March 2015. Octreotide scintigraphy showed intense uptake in the cervical mass, two pulmonary micronodules of 4–5 mm, and another lesion in the lumbar region (L3–L4). The final diagnosis was malignant nonsecretory PGL with adjacent tissue involvement and distant metastases. After three different treatments with minimal symptomatic improvement, 177Lu-DOTATATE was requested off-label. With a dose of 7,400 MBq until January 2018, the patient showed remarkable symptomatic pain improvement and a decrease in tumor size. Conclusion: We believe that our case report provides relevant information that can be considered in similar cases. First, the patient tripled the expected survival in such a clinical setting, and this benefit seems to rely on 177Lu-DOTATATE treatment. Second, we documented an early symptomatic response to this treatment but a long-term delayed volumetric radiographic response.

Materials based on doped ceria are considered promising elements for applications in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Cerium oxide can be classified as a mixed conductor. The type of dopant also greatly influences properties of doped ceria. Hence, studying the type of dopant to be used in the synthesis process is of great importance. Recent studies have shown that the lanthanide or alkaline earth ions are the most commonly dopants used in ceria. In order to obtain nanometric powders, which favor the catalytic effect and are more reactive than other powders, a technique of obtaining powders via solution combustion synthesis (SCS) was selected, and the type of fuel used, and its excess (content) were analyzed. The parameters that were varied in this study were related to the dopant (Ce(1-x) La(x) O(2- δ), where x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) and the type of fuel used (urea or sucrose) The powders were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In the TGA, a significant increase in the remaining mass loss was observed with an increase in the dopant content when both urea and sucrose were used. The SCS method enabled the production of lanthanum oxide doped ceria phase using both fuels. The XRD of the samples obtained using urea as fuel exhibited well-defined, narrow, and intense peaks immediately after synthesis, and this characteristic was maintained after thermal treatment. On the other hand, the use of sucrose as fuel enables the production of the same cristalinity after thermal treatment at 850°C. In addition, these samples had a higher specific surface area and smaller crystallite size compared to those obtained using urea as fuel.
