AbstractPurposeMethodsResultsConclusion\nIMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONTo explore women’s lived experiences of intimacy, sexuality and sexual functioning in the context of cauda equina syndrome (CES).Ten women completed an in-depth semi-structured interview exploring the psychosocial impact of CES on their sexuality and data were analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA).One superordinate theme was generated: “Sexuality forever altered, it’s changed completely,” reflecting the enduring impact of CES on women’s sexuality. Five subordinate themes emerged reflecting a range of changed roles and relationships, primarily associated with loss of sexual identity and a sense that health professionals did not prioritize sexual functioning (1): Loss of worth as a sexual being: “Feel like a nothing” (2) Relationships have changed: “It’s not a meeting of equals anymore” (3) Lack of professional support: “We don’t like to talk about anything below the waist” (4) Challenges for motherhood: “What kind of future will they have with a mother like me…” and (5) Finding ways of coping: “Closed the door on it.”Findings highlight the detrimental effect of CES, directly and indirectly, on women’s sexuality. Background: This study explores the quality of life (QoL) of individuals with a severe intellectual disability (ID) who had recently moved from an institutional setting (i.e., "residential campus") to independent housing in the community (i.e., "community living") and whether aspects of their QoL were perceived to have changed over the course of this move. Method: A qualitative approach was adopted by interviewing the key workers of 8 individuals with an ID (M age = 37.38, range: 26-44, male n = 6, female n = 2). An interview tool focusing on aspects of QoL was utilised and the interviews were analysed using thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006). Results: Ten themes emerged from the analysis that provided insight into the experience of transitioning to community living. Conclusions: The emotional wellbeing, health, privacy, freedom, and material wellbeing of all the individuals were perceived to have improved, as well as independence, choice, and social opportunities for many.

Our ability to regulate our emotions plays a key protective role against psychological distress and somatic symptoms, with most of the literature focusing on the role of cognitive reappraisal in interventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). This study seeks to examine the relationship between emotion dysregulation and psychological and physical distress in university students through the role of depersonalization (DP) and insecure attachment. This study will try to explain the deployment of DP as a defense mechanism to insecure attachment fears and overwhelming stress, developing a maladaptive emotion responding strategy, which affects wellbeing later in life. A cross-sectional design was used on a sample (N = 313) of university students over the age of 18 which consisted of an online survey of 7 questionnaires. Hierarchical multiple regression and mediation analysis were conducted on the results. The results showed that emotion dysregulation and DP predicted each variable of psychological distress and somatic symptoms. Both insecure attachment styles were found to predict psychological distress and somatization, mediated through higher levels of DP, whereby DP may be deployed as a defense mechanism to insecure attachment fears and overwhelming stress, which affects our wellbeing. Objective: To document the adult adjustment of survivors of childhood institutional abuse. Method: Two hundred and forty-seven adult survivors of institutional abuse with a mean age of 60 were interviewed with a protocol that included the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, modules from the Structured Clinical Interview for Axis I Disorders of DSM IV and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM IV Personality Disorders, the Trauma Symptom Inventory, and the Experiences in Close Relationships Inventory. Results: The prevalence of psychological disorders among adult survivors of institutional abuse was over 80% and far higher than in the normal population, with anxiety, mood and substance use disorders being the most prevalent diagnoses. Survivors also had high rates of trauma symptoms and insecure adult attachment styles, and these were higher for those who had experienced both institutional and intrafamilial abuse. Conclusions: There was an association between the experience of institutional abuse in childhood and the prevalence of adult mental health problems, particularly anxiety, mood and substance use disorders. Practice implications: Policies, practices and procedures should be regularly reviewed and revised to maximize protection of young people in institutional care. Evidence-based psychological treatment should be made available to adult survivors of institutional abuse. (Contains 4 tables and 1 figure.)
