We present a study of complexes of young massive star clusters (YMCs), embedded in extragalactic giant HII regions, based on the coupling of spectroscopic with photometric and spectrophotometric observations of about 100 star forming regions in seven spiral galaxies (NGC 628, NGC 783, NGC 2336, NGC 6217, NGC 6946, NGC 7331, and NGC 7678). The complete observational database has been observed and accumulated within the framework of our comprehensive study of extragalactic star forming regions. The current paper presents the last part of either unpublished or refreshed photometric and spectrophotometric observations of the galaxies NGC 6217, NGC 6946, NGC 7331, and NGC 7678. We derive extinctions, chemical abundances, continuum and line emissions of ionised gas, ages and masses for cluster complexes. We find the young massive cluster complexes to have ages no greater than 10 Myr and masses between 10^4Msol and 10^7Msol, and the extinctions A(V) vary between ~ 0 and 3 mag, while the impact of the nebular emission on integrated broadband photometry mainly is not greater than 40% of the total flux and is comparable with accuracies of dereddened photometric quantities.We also find evidence of differential extinction of stellar and gas emissions in some clusters, which hinders the photometric determination of ages and masses in these cases. Finally, we show that young massive cluster complexes in the studied galaxies and open clusters in the Milky Way form a continuous sequence of luminosities/masses and colour/ages., Comment: 23 pages, 22 figures, 5 tables (high resolution jpeg Figure 15 is available in the source format). We studied 102 star forming regions in seven spiral galaxies (NGC 628, NGC 783, NGC 2336, NGC 6217, NGC 6946, NGC 7331, and NGC 7678) on the basis of complex spectroscopic, photometric (UBVRI) and spectrophotometric (H alpha line) observations. Using data on the chemical composition and absorption in HII regions, obtained from spectroscopic observations, and using evolutionary models, we estimated physical parameters (ages and masses) of young stellar groupings embedded in HII regions. We found that the gas extinction, A(gas), which determined from the Balmer decrement, does not correspond in some cases to the absorption A(stars) in the young stellar associations (complexes). This is due to the spatial offset relative HII cloud the stellar group related to him. It has been found that the condition A(gas) = A(stars) does not satisfied for the star forming regions, in which: 1) the contribution to the total emission of gas in the B and/or V bands is higher than 40%, and 2) EW(H alpha) > 1500A. Extinction A(V) in studied star forming regions corrected for the Galactic absorption A(V)Gal ranges from 0 to 3 mag with a mean value A(V)-A(V)Gal = 1.18+-0.84 mag. We estimated masses and ages for 63 star forming regions. The regions have ages from 1 to 10 Myr, the most part of them are younger than 6 Myr. The derived masses of young stellar groupings range from 10^4Msun in the nearby galaxies NGC 628 and NGC 6946 to 10^7Msun in the most distant NGC 7678. More than 80% of groupings have masses between 10^5Msun and 10^6Msun. The lowest mass estimate of 1x10^4Msun for the objects in NGC 628 and NGC 6946 belongs to the mass interval of the youngest Galactic open clusters., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables. We use the currently most complete collection of reliable Cepheid positions (565 stars) out to ~5 kpc based mostly on our photometric data to outline the spiral pattern of our Galaxy. We find the pitch-angle to be equal to 9--10 degrees with the most accurate estimate (i=9.5 +/-0.1 degrees) obtained assuming that the spiral pattern has a four-armed structure, and the solar phase angle in the spiral pattern to be chi_0 = 121+/-3 degrees. The pattern speed is found to be Omega_P=25.2+/-0.5km/s/kpc based on a comparison of the positions of the spiral arms delineated by Cepheids and maser sources and the age difference between these objects., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures. The parameters of the ionized gas in NGC 6946 (in the [NII]6548,6583, H-alpha and [SII]6717,6731 lines) are investigated with the SAO RAS BTA telescope along three positions of the long slit of the SCORPIO focal reducer, passing through a number of large and small cavities of the gaseous disc of the galaxy. Most of these cavities correspond exactly to the cavities in warm dust. We found that everywhere in the direction of NGC 6946 the lines of ionized gas are decomposed into two Gaussians, one of which shows almost constant [SII]/H-alpha and [NII]/H-alpha ratios, as well as an almost constant radial velocity within the measurement errors (about -35 - -50 km/s). This component is in fact the foreground radiation from the diffuse ionized gas of our Galaxy; a similar component is also present in the emission of neutral hydrogen. The analysis of the component of ionized gas, occurring in NGC 6946, has revealed that it shows signs of shock excitation in the cavities of the gaseous disc of the galaxy. It is as well typical for the extraplanar diffuse ionized gas (EDIG), observed in a number of spiral galaxies at their high Z-coordinates. This can most likely be explained by low density of the gas in the NGC 6946 disc (with the usual photoionization) inside the cavities, due to what we see the spectral features of the EDIG gas of NGC 6946, projected onto them. In the absence of separation of ionized gas into two components by radial velocities, there is an increasing contribution to the integral line parameters by the EDIG of our Galaxy when the gas density in NGC 6946 decreases, which explains some strange results, obtained in the previous studies. The morphology of warm dust, visible in the infrared range and HI is almost the same. Striking regularities are found in the northwestern arm of the M31 galaxy. Star complexes located in this arm are all spaced 1.2 kpc apart and have similar sizes of about 0.6 kpc. Within the same arm region Beck et al. (1989) detected a regular magnetic field, and we found that its wavelength is the spacing between the complexes. In this arm, groups of HII regions lie inside star complexes, which, in turn, are located inside the gas and dust lane. In contrast, the southwestern arm of M31 splits into a gas and dust lane upstream and a dense stellar arm downstream, with HII regions located mostly along the boundary between these components of the arm. The stellar density in the southwestern arm is much higher than in the northwestern arm, and the former is not fragmented into star complexes. The age gradient across this arm have been found in earlier observations. According the classical SDW theory, these drastic differences may be due due to their different pitch angles: about 0 degree for northwestern part of the arm and about 30 degree for the southwestern segment. Data on M31, M51, M74, and some other galaxies suggest that star complexes are mostly located in the arm segments that are not accompanied by a dust lane upstream, i.e. do not host spiral shock wave. The regularities in the distribution of complexes along a density wave spiral arm are most probably due to the development of the Parker-Jeans instability, which builds up star complexes if the initial SFR in the arm is low and, as a sequence, magnetic field is regular along the arm., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures

The observed properties of young star clusters, such as the core radius and luminosity profile, change rapidly during the early evolution of the clusters. Here we present observations of 6 young clusters in M51 where we derive their sizes using HST imaging and ages using deep Gemini-North spectroscopy. We find evidence for a rapid expansion of the cluster cores during the first 20 Myr of their evolution. We confirm this trend by including data from the literature of both Galactic and extra-galactic embedded and young clusters, and possible mechanisms (rapid gas removal, stellar evolutionary mass-loss, and internal dynamical heating) are discussed. We explore the implications of this result, focussing on the fact that clusters were more concentrated in the past, implying that their stellar densities were much higher and relaxation times correspondingly shorter. Thus, when estimating if a particular cluster is dynamically relaxed, (i.e. when determining if a cluster's mass segregation is due to primordial or dynamical processes), the current relaxation time is only an upper-limit, with the relaxation time likely being significantly shorter in the past., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted MNRAS

The characteristics of ionized and HI gas in the peculiar star/cluster complex in NGC 6946, obtained with the 6-m telescope (BTA) SAO RAS, the Gemini North telescope, and the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT), are presented. The complex is unusual as hosting a super star cluster, the most massive known in an apparently non-interacting giant galaxy. It contains a number of smaller clusters and is bordered by a sharp C-shaped rim. We found that the complex is additionally unusual in having peculiar gas kinematics. The velocity field of the ionized gas reveals a deep oval minimum, ~300 pc in size, centered 7" east of the supercluster. The Vr of the ionized gas in the dip center is 100 km/s lower than in its surroundings, and emission lines within the dip appear to be shock excited. This dip is near the center of an HI hole and a semi-ring of HII regions. The HI (and less certainly, HII) velocity fields reveal expansion, with the velocity reaching ~30 km/s at a distance about 300 pc from the center of expansion, which is near the deep minimum position. The super star cluster is at the western rim of the minimum. The sharp western rim of the whole complex is plausibly a manifestation of a regular dust arc along the complex edge. We report the detection of dark energy near the Milky Way made with precision observations of the local Hubble flow of expansion. We estimate the local density of dark energy and find that it is near, if not exactly equal to, the global dark energy density. The result is independent of, compatible with, and complementary to the horizon-scale observations in which dark energy was first discovered. Together with the cosmological concordance data, our result forms direct observational evidence for the Einstein antigravity as a universal phenomenon -- in the same sense as the Newtonian universal gravity., Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure

Star-formation within galaxies appears on multiple scales, from spiral structure, to OB associations, to individual star clusters, and often sub-structure within these clusters. This multitude of scales calls for objective methods to find and classify star-forming regions, regardless of spatial size. To this end, we present an analysis of star-forming groups in the local group spiral galaxy M33, based on a new implementation of the Minimum Spanning Tree (MST) method. Unlike previous studies which limited themselves to a single spatial scale, we study star-forming structures from the effective resolution limit (~20pc) to kpc scales. We find evidence for a continuum of star-forming group sizes, from pc to kpc scales. We do not find a characteristic scale for OB associations, unlike that found in previous studies, and we suggest that the appearance of such a scale was caused by spatial resolution and selection effects. The luminosity function of the groups is found to be well represented by a power-law with an index, -2, similar to that found for clusters and GMCs. Additionally, the groups follow a similar mass-radius relation as GMCs. The size distribution of the groups is best described by a log-normal distribution and we show that within a hierarchical distribution, if a scale is selected to find structure, the resulting size distribution will have a log-normal distribution. We find an abrupt drop of the number of groups outside a galactic radius of ~4kpc, suggesting a change in the structure of the star-forming ISM, possibly reflected in the lack of GMCs beyond this radius. Most star complexes are in fact complexes of stars, clusters and gas clouds; term "star complexes" was introduced as general one disregarding the preferential content of a complex. Generally the high rate of star formation in a complex is accompanied by the high number of bound clusters, including massive ones, what was explained by the high gas pressure in such regions. However, there are also complexes, where clusters seems to be more numerous in relation to stars than in a common complex. The high rate of clusters - but not isolated stars - formation seems to be typical for many isolated bursts of star formation, but deficit of stars might be still explained by the observational selection. The latter cannot, however, explain the complexes or the dwarf galaxies, where the high formation rate of only stars is observed. The possibility of the very fast dissolution of parental clusters just in such regions should itself be explained. Some difference in the physical conditions (turbulence parameters ?) within the initial gas supercloud might be a reason for the high or low stars/clusters number ratio in a complex., Comment: 5 figures

Star complexes are the highest level groupings in the hierarchy of the embedded young stars, clusters and associations, which obey the size - age relation. Starburst clumps, superassociations, supergiant HII regions are different titles for the groupings of the same size as complexes but with active star formation over all the grouping. The coherent star formation in the regions of violent star formation was probably triggered by external pressure. The origin of the arc-shaped stellar complexes in the LMC4 region is still unknown. These perfect arcs could not have been formed by O-stars and SNe in their centers; the strong arguments exist also against the possibility of their formation from infalling gas clouds. The origin from microquasars/GRB jets is not excluded, because there is the strong concentration of X-ray binaries in the same region and the massive old cluster NGC 1978, probable site of formation of binaries with compact components, is there also. The last possibility is that the source of energy for formation of the stellar arcs and the LMC4 supershell might be the the giant jet from the nucleus of the Milky Way, which might be active a dozen Myr ago.

We describe the results of a long-slit spectroscopic study of an unusual star complex in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 6946 using the SAO 6-m telescope and the Keck 10-m telescope. The complex resembles a circular bubble 600 pc in diameter with a young super star cluster (SSC) near the center. The kinematics of ionized gas is studied through Ha emission with several slit positions. Position-velocity diagrams show two distinct features with high speed motions. One is an irregularly shaped region to the east of the SSC, 270 pc in size, in which most of the Ha emission is blue shifted by 120 km/s, and another is a 350 pc shell centered on the SSC with positive and negative velocity shifts of 60 km/s. Balmer and HeI absorption lines in the SSC give an age of 12-13 Myr, which is consistent with the photometric age but significantly older than the kinematic ages of the high speed regions. The energetics of the SSC and its interaction with the environment are considered. The expansion energies exceed 10^52 ergs, but the power outputs from winds and supernova in the SSC are large enough to account for this. The intensities of Balmer, [NII], and [SII] emission lines within and around the complex indicate that shock excitation makes a significant contribution to the emission from the most energetic region., Comment: LaTeX, 11 pages and 11 GIF files in tar-archive with figures. The stellar populations in a stellar complex in NGC 6946 are analyzed on images taken with the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 on board the Hubble Space Telescope. The complex is peculiar by its very high density of stars and clusters and semicircular shape. Its physical dimensions are about the same as for the local Gould Belt, but the stellar density is 1 - 2 orders of magnitude higher. In addition to an extremely luminous, 15 Myr old cluster discussed in an earlier paper, accounting for about 17% of the integrated V-band light, we identify 18 stellar clusters within the complex with luminosities similar to the brightest open clusters in the Milky Way. The color-magnitude diagram of individual stars in the complex shows a paucity of red supergiants compared to model predictions in the 10-20 Myr age range for a uniform star formation rate. We thus find tentative evidence for a gap in the dispersed star formation history, with a concentration of star formation into a young globular cluster during this gap. Confirmation of this result must, however, await a better understanding of the late evolution of stars in the corresponding mass range (> 12 Msun). A reddening map based on individual reddenings for 373 early-type stars is presented, showing significant variations in the absorption across the complex. These may be responsible for some of the arc-like structures previously identified on ground-based images. We discuss differences in shapes, expansion velocities and fragmentation times of structures created by an energy deposition from a single Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) or an OB association to the ISM. After the initial inflation, supershells produced by GRBs are almost static or slowly expanding, contrary to more rapidly expanding supershells created by OB associations. We discuss the position of the energy source relative to the symmetry plane of the galaxy: observed arc-like structures can be the most dense parts of structures formed by an expansion from a source above or below the galactic plane. Arcs may also form, if the expansion takes place inside a giant HI cloud.
