1. RF power as key contributor to high performance 'baseline' scenario experiments in JET DD and DT plasmas in preparation for ITER

Abstract

Experimental studies of Deuterium and Tritium plasmas have been carried out at JET in the last years, yielding precious information for the next generation of fusion devices. Among the various approaches taken, JET's "Baseline"scenario experiments are pushing the machine towards its engineering limits by operating in a high-confinement H-mode at high toroidal field, plasma current and fuel density, as planned for ITER. The present paper provides a brief sketch of the Baseline scenario philosophy and discusses a number of RF-related results obtained in the preparation of the DT campaign as well as its preparations. Fusion powers of almost 9MW and energies of 12MJ have been reached in DT "Baseline"scenario plasmas. The differing role of radio frequency and beam heating is highlighted, the former allowing peaked core temperature profiles instrumental e.g. for core high-Z impurity chasing and the "landing"of high performance discharges while the latter is the main overall heating source in JET. Synergistic effects from the simultaneous use of wave and beam heating are responsible for a modest but noticeable increase in fusion power. Abstract

Beam-target reactions are responsible for a substantial fraction of the fusion power generated in D-T plasmas in JET-ILW (Be/W-wall), with ion temperatures of 10-12keV and large neutral-beam injection (NBI) power. It is known that injecting D beam ions with energies of ∼100-150keV in T-rich plasmas has a larger potential for beam-target fusion than in 50:50 D:T plasmas, but such a scenario was never developed in the past D-T experiments performed in JET-C (Carbon-wall) and in TFTR in the 90's. On top of the intrinsic advantages of using D beams in T-rich plasmas for D-T neutron production, simulations have shown that fundamental ion-cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) of the D ions can significantly boost the net fusion reactivity, since both the thermalized D ions and the fast D-NBI ions are accelerated to energy ranges that are optimal for the D-T reaction cross-section. The beneficial effect of fundamental D ICRH on thermal D minorities in tritium plasmas (without NBI) was identified in the JET-C D-T experiments, but was not tested in high performance H-mode discharges with D-NBI heating. In 2021, dedicated JET-ILW DTE2 [1] experiments confirmed - for the first time - the improved fusion performance of T-rich plasmas with high D-NBI power and highlighted the key impact of fundamental D ICRH on the fusion reactivity. This new scenario lead to the world-wide 5s averaged fusion power (and energy) record in D-T tokamak plasmas with dominant beam-target reactions. A brief experimental overview followed by detailed RF wave / Fokker-Planck simulations including NBI-ICRH synergy will be presented, to disentangle the different components contributing to the high neutron yield achieved in these experiments. Abstract

The tokamak a configuration variable (TCV) continues to leverage its unique shaping capabilities, flexible heating systems and modern control system to address critical issues in preparation for ITER and a fusion power plant. For the 2019-20 campaign its configurational flexibility has been enhanced with the installation of removable divertor gas baffles, its diagnostic capabilities with an extensive set of upgrades and its heating systems with new dual frequency gyrotrons. The gas baffles reduce coupling between the divertor and the main chamber and allow for detailed investigations on the role of fuelling in general and, together with upgraded boundary diagnostics, test divertor and edge models in particular. The increased heating capabilities broaden the operational regime to include T (e)/T (i) similar to 1 and have stimulated refocussing studies from L-mode to H-mode across a range of research topics. ITER baseline parameters were reached in type-I ELMy H-modes and alternative regimes with `small' (or no) ELMs explored. Most prominently, negative triangularity was investigated in detail and confirmed as an attractive scenario with H-mode level core confinement but an L-mode edge. Emphasis was also placed on control, where an increased number of observers, actuators and control solutions became available and are now integrated into a generic control framework as will be needed in future devices. The quantity and quality of results of the 2019-20 TCV campaign are a testament to its successful integration within the European research effort alongside a vibrant domestic programme and international collaborations.

Abstract

For the past several years, the JET scientific programme (Pamela et al 2007 Fusion Eng. Des. 82 590) has been engaged in a multi-campaign effort, including experiments in D, H and T, leading up to 2020 and the first experiments with 50%/50% D–T mixtures since 1997 and the first ever D–T plasmas with the ITER mix of plasma-facing component materials. For this purpose, a concerted physics and technology programme was launched with a view to prepare the D–T campaign (DTE2). This paper addresses the key elements developed by the JET programme directly contributing to the D–T preparation. This intense preparation includes the review of the physics basis for the D–T operational scenarios, including the fusion power predictions through first principle and integrated modelling, and the impact of isotopes in the operation and physics of D–T plasmas (thermal and particle transport, high confinement mode (H-mode) access, Be and W erosion, fuel recovery, etc). This effort also requires improving several aspects of plasma operation for DTE2, such as real time control schemes, heat load control, disruption avoidance and a mitigation system (including the installation of a new shattered pellet injector), novel ion cyclotron resonance heating schemes (such as the three-ions scheme), new diagnostics (neutron camera and spectrometer, active Alfvèn eigenmode antennas, neutral gauges, radiation hard imaging systems…) and the calibration of the JET neutron diagnostics at 14 MeV for accurate fusion power measurement. The active preparation of JET for the 2020 D–T campaign provides an incomparable source of information and a basis for the future D–T operation of ITER, and it is also foreseen that a large number of key physics issues will be addressed in support of burning plasmas.

Abstract

The effect of the novel 'three-ion' D-(3He)-H minority ICRH heating scheme on the behavior of the metallic impurities at JET-ILW is discussed. The reported experiment was performed in L-mode plasmas at a magnetic field BT = 3.2 T, plasma current Ip = 2 MA and central plasma densities ne(0)≈4×1019m-3. ICRH power was delivered with dipole or +π/2 antenna phasing at f ≈ 32.2-33MHz, placing the 3He cyclotron resonance at the plasma core. The edge isotopic ratio H/(H+D) was varied between 73 and 92%, and 3He concentration in the range of 0.1-1.5% to assess the sensitivity of the scheme to the detailed plasma composition. The results of our analysis show a linear increase of the plasma effective charge Zeff, radiated power Prad, bulk and content of metallic impurities with ICRF power. The observed scattering of the points reflects the difference in the plasma composition and ICRF antenna phasing. For discharges heated with similar ICRH power level ∼4MW, our analysis indicates that for a large range of H/(H+D) the novel scenario effectively heats the plasma with reduced content of metallic impurities. The impurities are shown to be concentrated mainly around the mid-radius region of the plasma. We conclude this paper with a discussion of the effect of the long-period sawteeth on the observed dynamics of metallic impurities in the plasma core. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The studies of recent JET experiments in H/D≈0.85/0.15 plasma (2.9T/2MA) in which neutron rate was enhanced by applying 2.5MW of ICRH using D-(DNBI)-H three-ion scheme are reported. An extensive analysis of this novel heating scenario has been carried out by means of integrated TRANSP/TORIC modelling, and a comprehensive validation of the computed Fast Ion Distribution Function (FI DF) with a range of fast ion diagnostics available at JET is presented. The predicted acceleration of D Neutral Beam Injection (NBI) ions beyond their injection energies and the associated changes in FI DF by RF waves are found to be in good agreement with measured neutron yield and TOFOR neutron spectrometer measurements, as well as with multi-channel neutron camera observations and neutral particle analyser diagnostic. An outlook of the possible applications of the developed technique for future DTE2 studies on JET has been highlighted. Controlled acceleration of TNBI ions in D-rich and DNBI ions in T-rich plasmas to optimal energies can be applied to maximise BT fusion rates and contribute to the success of future DT experiments at JET and ITER as illustrated in this study. Abstract

The construction of the world largest superconducting stellarator Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) has reached the final stage. One of the main scientific objectives of the W7-X project is to prove experimentally the predicted good confinement of high-energy ions. Ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) system is considered to be installed in W7-X to serve as a localized source of high energy ions. ICRH heating scenarios relevant for hydrogen and deuterium phases of W7-X operation are summarized. The heating efficiency in (3He)-H plasmas is qualitatively analyzed using a modified version of the 1D TOMCAT code able to account for stellarator geometry. The minority ion absorption is shown to be maximized at the helium-3 concentration ~2% for the typical plasma and ICRH parameters to be available during the initial phase of W7-X. Abstract

Ion cyclotron resonance frequencies (ICRF) mode conversion has been developed for localized on-axis and off-axis bulk electron heating on the JET tokamak. The fast magnetosonic waves launched from the low-field side ICRF antennas are mode-converted to short-wavelength waves on the high-field side of the He-3 ion cyclotron resonance layer in D and He-4 plasmas and subsequently damped on the bulk electrons. The resulting electron power deposition, measured using ICRF power modulation, is narrow with a typical full-width at half-maximum of approximate to30 cm (i.e. about 30% of the minor radius) and the total deposited power to electrons comprises at least up to 80% of the applied ICRF power. The ICRF mode conversion power deposition has been kept constant using He-3 bleed throughout the ICRF phase with a typical duration of 4-6 s, i.e. 15-40 energy confinement times. Using waves propagating in the counter-current direction minimizes competing ion damping in the presence of co-injected deuterium beam ions.

Abstract

The major aspects linked to the use of the JET auxiliary heating systems: NBI, ICRF and LHCD, in the new JET ITER-like wall are presented. We show that although there were issues related to the operation of each system, efficient and safe plasma heating was obtained with room for higher power. For the NBI up to 25.7 MW was safely injected; issues that had to be tackled were mainly the beam shine-through and beam re-ionization before its entrance into the plasma. For the ICRF system, 5 MW were coupled in L-mode and 4 MW in H-mode; the main areas of concern were RF sheaths related heat loads and impurities production. For the LH, 2.5 MW were delivered without problems; arcing and generation of fast electron beams in front of the launcher that can lead to high heat loads were the keys issues. For each system, an overview will be given of: the main modifications implemented for safe use, their compatibility with the new metallic wall, the differences in behaviour compared with the previous carbon wall, with emphasis on heat loads and impurity content in the plasma. Abstract

The effect of ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) on (3He)D plasmas at JET was studied with the time of flight optimized rate (TOFOR) spectrometer dedicated to 2.5 MeV dd neutron measurements. In internal transport barrier (ITB) plasma experiments with large 3He concentrations (X(3He)>15%) an increase in neutron yield was observed after the ITB disappeared but with the auxiliary neutral beam injection and ICRH power still applied. The analysis of the TOFOR data revealed the formation of a high energy (fast) D population in this regime. The results were compared to other mode conversion experiments with similar X(3He) but slightly different heating conditions. In this study we report on the high energy neutron tails originating from the fast D ions and their correlation with X(3He) and discuss the light it can shed on ICRH-plasma power coupling mechanisms. Abstract

This paper summarizes the recent work on JET in the three areas of heating, current drive and energetic particles. The achievements have extended the possibilities of JET, have a direct connection to ITER operation and provide new and interesting physics. Toroidal rotation profiles of plasmas heated far off axis with little or no refuelling or momentum input are hollow with only small differences on whether the power deposition is located on the low field side or on the high field side. With LH current drive the magnetic shear was varied from slightly positive to negative. The improved coupling (through the use of plasma shaping and CD4) allowed up to 3.4 MW of PLH in internal transport barrier (ITB) plasmas with more than 15 MW of combined NBI and ICRF heating. The q-profile with negative magnetic shear and the ITB could be maintained for the duration of the high heating pulse (8 s). Fast ions have been produced in JET with ICRF to simulate alpha particles: by using third harmonic 4He heating, beam injected 4He at 120 kV were accelerated to energies above 2 MeV, taking advantage of the unique capability of JET to use NBI with 4He and to confine MeV class ions. ICRF heating was used to replicate the dynamics of alpha heating and the control of an equivalent Q&equal;10 `burn' was simulated.

50. Modelling RF heating in toroidal geometry: on the discrete bounce spectrum and the continuous bounce average

Abstract

Starting from a more general formalism due to Lamalle [Plasma Phys. Contr. Fusion 32, 1409 (1997)], the dielectric response of a tokamak plasma to a radiofrequency (RF) perturbation is evaluated using a simple decorrelation model, assuming the poloidal cross-section of the magnetic surfaces to be circular and retaining leading-order terms in the drift parameter. Toroidicity, poloidal magnetic field and particle trapping are included in the model. Constants of the motion are used as independent variables. A semi-analytical method is adopted to evaluate the bounce spectrum of the dielectric response (needed to solve the wave equation) and the associated RF diffusion operator (required for solving the Fokker–Planck equation). The accent is on a study of this bounce spectrum. In particular, the link between the discrete bounce spectrum and the continuous bounce integral is highlighted. The critical parameter for the global justification of the replacement of the sum on the bounce spectrum by a bounce average is the relative magnitude of the decorrelation and bounce times. That for the local justification is the second derivative of the periodic part of the relative wave–particle phase. Numerical examples are provided to give a qualitative feeling for the justification of this substitution. The relation between the results presented here and those based on Hamiltonian models or on a simplified geometry is discussed.
