1. OpenCap markerless motion capture estimation of lower extremity kinematics and dynamics in cycling

Abstract

Markerless motion capture offers several benefits over traditional marker-based systems by eliminating the need for physical markers, which are prone to misplacement and artifacts. Utilizing computer vision and deep learning algorithms, markerless systems can directly detect human body landmarks, reducing manual processing and errors associated with marker placement. These systems are adaptable, able to track user-defined features, and practical for real-world applications using consumer-grade devices such as smartphone cameras. This study compares the performance of OpenCap, a markerless motion capture system, with traditional marker-based systems in assessing cycling biomechanics. Ten healthy adults participated in experiments to capture sagittal hip, knee, and ankle kinematics and dynamics using both methods. OpenCap used videos from smartphones and integrated computer vision and musculoskeletal simulations to estimate 3D kinematics. Results showed high agreement between the two systems, with no significant differences in kinematic and kinetic measurements for the hip, knee, and ankle. The correlation coefficients exceeded 0.98, indicating very strong consistency. Errors were minimal, with kinematic errors under 4 degrees and kinetic errors below 5 Nm. This study concludes that OpenCap is a viable alternative to marker-based motion capture, offering comparable precision without extensive setup for hip (flexion/extension), knee (flexion/extension), and ankle (dorsiflexion/plantarflexion) joints. Future work should aim to enhance the accuracy of ankle joint measurements and extend analyses to 3D kinematics and kinetics for comprehensive biomechanical assessments.

2. Swin UNETR segmentation with automated geometry filtering for biomechanical modeling of knee joint cartilage

Abstract

Simulation studies, such as finite element (FE) modeling, offer insights into knee joint biomechanics, which may not be achieved through experimental methods without direct involvement of patients. While generic FE models have been used to predict tissue biomechanics, they overlook variations in population-specific geometry, loading, and material properties. In contrast, subject-specific models account for these factors, delivering enhanced predictive precision but requiring significant effort and time for development. This study aimed to facilitate subject-specific knee joint FE modeling by integrating an automated cartilage segmentation algorithm using a 3D Swin UNETR. This algorithm provided initial segmentation of knee cartilage, followed by automated geometry filtering to refine surface roughness and continuity. In addition to the standard metrics of image segmentation performance, such as Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) and Hausdorff distance, the method's effectiveness was also assessed in FE simulation. Nine pairs of knee cartilage FE models, using manual and automated segmentation methods, were developed to compare the predicted stress and strain responses during gait. The automated segmentation achieved high Dice similarity coefficients of 89.4% for femoral and 85.1% for tibial cartilage, with a Hausdorff distance of 2.3 mm between the automated and manual segmentation. Mechanical results including maximum principal stress and strain, fluid pressure, fibril strain, and contact area showed no significant differences between the manual and automated FE models. Abstract

Simulation studies like finite element (FE) modeling provide insight into knee joint mechanics without patient experimentation. Generic FE models represent biomechanical behavior of the tissue by overlooking variations in geometry, loading, and material properties of a population. On the other hand, subject-specific models include these specifics, resulting in enhanced predictive precision. However, creating such models is laborious and time-intensive. The present study aimed to enhance subject-specific knee joint FE modeling by incorporating a semi-automated segmentation algorithm. This segmentation was a 3D Swin UNETR for an initial segmentation of the femur and tibia, followed by a statistical shape model (SSM) adjustment to improve surface roughness and continuity. Five hundred and seven magnetic resonance images (MRIs) from the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI) database were used to build and validate the segmentation model. A semi-automated FE model was developed using this semi-automated segmentation. On the other hand, a manual FE model was developed through manual segmentation (i.e., the gold standard approach). Both FE models were subjected to gait loading. The predicted mechanical response of manual and semi-automated FE models were compared. In the result, our semi-automated segmentation achieved Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) over 98% for both femur and tibia. The mechanical results (max principal stress, max principal strain, fluid pressure, fibril strain, and contact area) showed no significant differences between the manual and semi-automated FE models, indicating the effectiveness of the proposed semi-automated segmentation in creating accurate knee joint FE models. 8. Tibial Strains are Sensitive to Speed, but not Grade, Perturbations During Running

Abstract

A fatigue-failure process is hypothesized to govern the development of tibial stress fractures, where bone damage is highly dependent on the peak strain magnitude. To date, much of the work examining tibial strains during running has ignored uphill and downhill running despite the prevalence of this terrain. This study examined the sensitivity of tibial strains to changes in running grade and speed using a combined musculoskeletal-finite element modeling routine. Seventeen participants ran on a treadmill at $\pm$10{\deg}, $\pm$5{\deg}, and 0{\deg}; at each grade, participants ran at 3.33 m/s and a grade-adjusted speed - 2.50 m/s and 4.17 m/s for uphill and downhill conditions, respectively. Force and motion data were recorded in each grade and speed combination. Muscle and joint contact forces were estimated using inverse-dynamics-based static optimization. These forces were applied to a participant-informed finite element model of the tibia. None of the strain variables (50th and 95th percentile strain and strained volume $\geq$4000 $\mu\varepsilon$) differed as a function of running grade; however, all strain variables were sensitive to running speed (F(1)$\geq$9.59, p$\leq$0.03). In particular, a 1 m/s increase in running speed resulted in a 9% ($\approx$ 260 $\mu\varepsilon$) and 155% ($\approx$ 600 mm^3) increase in peak strain and strained volume, respectively. Overall, these findings suggest that faster running speed, but not changes in running grade, may be more deleterious to the tibia.

10. Effects of Foot-Strike Pattern on Neuromuscular Function During a Prolonged Graded Run.

Abstract

Purpose: To study whether, during typical-level running, non-rear-foot strikers (non-RFS) or rear-foot strikers (RFS) presented a similar or different extent of neuromuscular fatigue after a prolonged graded run. Methods: Sixteen experienced male trail runners (8 non-RFS and 8 RFS) performed a 2.5-hour treadmill graded running exercise. Before and after exercise, neuromuscular tests were performed to assess neuromuscular fatigue of the plantar flexors. Biomechanical gait parameters were acquired with an instrumented treadmill, and electromyographic activity of the lower-limb muscles was collected as an index of muscle activation. Results: There were no significant time × foot strike interactions for neuromuscular (all P ≥.742), muscle activation (all P ≥.157), or biomechanical (all P ≥.096) variables. Conclusions: A dominant level running foot-strike pattern did not directly affect the extent of neuromuscular fatigue during a prolonged graded run. This suggests that no ideal running foot-strike pattern exists to minimize neuromuscular fatigue during prolonged-duration races wherein cumulative uphill and downhill segments are high, such as in trail running. Abstract

The LUX-ZEPLIN experiment is a dark matter detector centered on a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber operating at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, USA. This Letter reports results from LUX-ZEPLIN's first search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with an exposure of 60~live days using a fiducial mass of 5.5 t. A profile-likelihood ratio analysis shows the data to be consistent with a background-only hypothesis, setting new limits on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon, spin-dependent WIMP-neutron, and spin-dependent WIMP-proton cross sections for WIMP masses above 9 GeV/c$^2$. The most stringent limit is set for spin-independent scattering at 36 GeV/c$^2$, rejecting cross sections above 9.2$\times 10^{-48}$ cm$^2$ at the 90% confidence level., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures. 12. StickyLand: Breaking the Linear Presentation of Computational Notebooks

Abstract

How can we better organize code in computational notebooks? Notebooks have become a popular tool among data scientists, as they seamlessly weave text and code together, supporting users to rapidly iterate and document code experiments. However, it is often challenging to organize code in notebooks, partially because there is a mismatch between the linear presentation of code and the non-linear process of exploratory data analysis. We present StickyLand, a notebook extension for empowering users to freely organize their code in non-linear ways. With sticky cells that are always shown on the screen, users can quickly access their notes, instantly observe experiment results, and easily build interactive dashboards that support complex visual analytics. Case studies highlight how our tool can enhance notebook users's productivity and identify opportunities for future notebook designs. Abstract

LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) is a second-generation direct dark matter experiment with spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering sensitivity above $1.4 \times 10^{-48}$ cm$^{2}$ for a WIMP mass of 40 GeV/c$^{2}$ and a 1000 d exposure. LZ achieves this sensitivity through a combination of a large 5.6 t fiducial volume, active inner and outer veto systems, and radio-pure construction using materials with inherently low radioactivity content. The LZ collaboration performed an extensive radioassay campaign over a period of six years to inform material selection for construction and provide an input to the experimental background model against which any possible signal excess may be evaluated. The campaign and its results are described in this paper. We present assays of dust and radon daughters depositing on the surface of components as well as cleanliness controls necessary to maintain background expectations through detector construction and assembly. Finally, examples from the campaign to highlight fixed contaminant radioassays for the LZ photomultiplier tubes, quality control and quality assurance procedures through fabrication, radon emanation measurements of major sub-systems, and bespoke detector systems to assay scintillator are presented., Comment: 45 pages (79 inc. tables), 7 figures, 9 tables

Abstract

We describe the design and assembly of the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment, a direct detection search for cosmic WIMP dark matter particles. The centerpiece of the experiment is a large liquid xenon time projection chamber sensitive to low energy nuclear recoils. Rejection of backgrounds is enhanced by a Xe skin veto detector and by a liquid scintillator Outer Detector loaded with gadolinium for efficient neutron capture and tagging. LZ is located in the Davis Cavern at the 4850' level of the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, USA. We describe the major subsystems of the experiment and its key design features and requirements.

Abstract

We report a measurement of electron antineutrino oscillation from the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment with nearly 4 million reactor $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ inverse beta decay candidates observed over 1958 days of data collection. The installation of a Flash-ADC readout system and a special calibration campaign using different source enclosures reduce uncertainties in the absolute energy calibration to less than 0.5% for visible energies larger than 2 MeV. The uncertainty in the cosmogenic $^9$Li and $^8$He background is reduced from 45% to 30% in the near detectors. A detailed investigation of the spent nuclear fuel history improves its uncertainty from 100% to 30%. Analysis of the relative $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ rates and energy spectra among detectors yields $\sin^{2}2\theta_{13} = 0.0856\pm 0.0029$ and $\Delta m^2_{32}=(2.471^{+0.068}_{-0.070})\times 10^{-3}~\mathrm{eV}^2$ assuming the normal hierarchy, and $\Delta m^2_{32}=-(2.575^{+0.068}_{-0.070})\times 10^{-3}~\mathrm{eV}^2$ assuming the inverted hierarchy., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, and 1 table. v4: the published version

Abstract

This work reports a precise measurement of the reactor antineutrino flux using 2.2 million inverse beta decay (IBD) events collected with the Daya Bay near detectors in 1230 days. The dominant uncertainty on the neutron detection efficiency is reduced by 56% with respect to the previous measurement through a comprehensive neutron calibration and detailed data and simulation analysis. The new average IBD yield is determined to be $(5.91\pm0.09)\times10^{-43}~\rm{cm}^2/\rm{fission}$ with total uncertainty improved by 29%. The corresponding mean fission fractions from the four main fission isotopes $^{235}$U, $^{238}$U, $^{239}$Pu, and $^{241}$Pu are 0.564, 0.076, 0.304, and 0.056, respectively. The ratio of measured to predicted antineutrino yield is found to be $0.952\pm0.014\pm0.023$ ($1.001\pm0.015\pm0.027$) for the Huber-Mueller (ILL-Vogel) model, where the first and second uncertainty are experimental and theoretical model uncertainty, respectively. Abstract

LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) is a next generation dark matter direct detection experiment that will operate 4850 feet underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota, USA. Using a two-phase xenon detector with an active mass of 7~tonnes, LZ will search primarily for low-energy interactions with Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), which are hypothesized to make up the dark matter in our galactic halo. In this paper, the projected WIMP sensitivity of LZ is presented based on the latest background estimates and simulations of the detector. For a 1000~live day run using a 5.6~tonne fiducial mass, LZ is projected to exclude at 90\% confidence level spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross sections above $1.4 \times 10^{-48}$~cm$^{2}$ for a 40~$\mathrm{GeV}/c^{2}$ mass WIMP. Additionally, a $5\sigma$ discovery potential is projected reaching cross sections below the exclusion limits of recent experiments. For spin-dependent WIMP-neutron(-proton) scattering, a sensitivity of $2.3 \times 10^{-43}$~cm$^{2}$ ($7.1 \times 10^{-42}$~cm$^{2}$) for a 40~$\mathrm{GeV}/c^{2}$ mass WIMP is expected. Abstract

Neutrons produced by cosmic ray muons are an important background for underground experiments studying neutrino oscillations, neutrinoless double beta decay, dark matter, and other rare-event signals. A measurement of the neutron yield in the three different experimental halls of the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment at varying depth is reported. The neutron yield in Daya Bay's liquid scintillator is measured to be $Y_n=(10.26\pm 0.86)\times 10^{-5}$, $(10.22\pm 0.87)\times 10^{-5}$, and $(17.03\pm 1.22)\times 10^{-5}~\mu^{-1}~$g$^{-1}~$cm$^2$ at depths of 250, 265, and 860 meters-water-equivalent. These results are compared to other measurements and the simulated neutron yield in Fluka and Geant4. A global fit including the Daya Bay measurements yields a power law coefficient of $0.77 \pm 0.03$ for the dependence of the neutron yield on muon energy., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

The Daya Bay Experiment consists of eight identically designed detectors located in three underground experimental halls named as EH1, EH2, EH3, with 250, 265 and 860 meters of water equivalent vertical overburden, respectively. Cosmic muon events have been recorded over a two-year period. The underground muon rate is observed to be positively correlated with the effective atmospheric temperature and to follow a seasonal modulation pattern. The correlation coefficient $\alpha$, describing how a variation in the muon rate relates to a variation in the effective atmospheric temperature, is found to be $\alpha_{\text{EH1}} = 0.362\pm0.031$, $\alpha_{\text{EH2}} = 0.433\pm0.038$ and $\alpha_{\text{EH3}} = 0.641\pm0.057$ for each experimental hall., Comment: Updated to be identical to the published version

Abstract

The Daya Bay experiment has observed correlations between reactor core fuel evolution and changes in the reactor antineutrino flux and energy spectrum. Four antineutrino detectors in two experimental halls were used to identify 2.2 million inverse beta decays (IBDs) over 1230 days spanning multiple fuel cycles for each of six 2.9 GW$_{\textrm{th}}$ reactor cores at the Daya Bay and Ling Ao nuclear power plants. Using detector data spanning effective $^{239}$Pu fission fractions, $F_{239}$, from 0.25 to 0.35, Daya Bay measures an average IBD yield, $\bar{\sigma}_f$, of $(5.90 \pm 0.13) \times 10^{-43}$ cm$^2$/fission and a fuel-dependent variation in the IBD yield, $d\sigma_f/dF_{239}$, of $(-1.86 \pm 0.18) \times 10^{-43}$ cm$^2$/fission. This observation rejects the hypothesis of a constant antineutrino flux as a function of the $^{239}$Pu fission fraction at 10 standard deviations. The variation in IBD yield was found to be energy-dependent, rejecting the hypothesis of a constant antineutrino energy spectrum at 5.1 standard deviations. While measurements of the evolution in the IBD spectrum show general agreement with predictions from recent reactor models, the measured evolution in total IBD yield disagrees with recent predictions at 3.1$\sigma$. This discrepancy indicates that an overall deficit in measured flux with respect to predictions does not result from equal fractional deficits from the primary fission isotopes $^{235}$U, $^{239}$Pu, $^{238}$U, and $^{241}$Pu. Based on measured IBD yield variations, yields of $(6.17 \pm 0.17)$ and $(4.27 \pm 0.26) \times 10^{-43}$ cm$^2$/fission have been determined for the two dominant fission parent isotopes $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu. A 7.8% discrepancy between the observed and predicted $^{235}$U yield suggests that this isotope may be the primary contributor to the reactor antineutrino anomaly., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment will search for dark matter particle interactions with a detector containing a total of 10 tonnes of liquid xenon within a double-vessel cryostat. The large mass and proximity of the cryostat to the active detector volume demand the use of material with extremely low intrinsic radioactivity. We report on the radioassay campaign conducted to identify suitable metals, the determination of factors limiting radiopure production, and the selection of titanium for construction of the LZ cryostat and other detector components. This titanium has been measured with activities of $^{238}$U$_{e}$~$<$1.6~mBq/kg, $^{238}$U$_{l}$~$<$0.09~mBq/kg, $^{232}$Th$_{e}$~$=0.28\pm 0.03$~mBq/kg, $^{232}$Th$_{l}$~$=0.25\pm 0.02$~mBq/kg, $^{40}$K~$<$0.54~mBq/kg, and $^{60}$Co~$<$0.02~mBq/kg (68\% CL). Such low intrinsic activities, which are some of the lowest ever reported for titanium, enable its use for future dark matter and other rare event searches. Monte Carlo simulations have been performed to assess the expected background contribution from the LZ cryostat with this radioactivity. In 1,000 days of WIMP search exposure of a 5.6-tonne fiducial mass, the cryostat will contribute only a mean background of $0.160\pm0.001$(stat)$\pm0.030$(sys) counts., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physics

Abstract

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory is a cubic-kilometer-scale high-energy neutrino detector built into the ice at the South Pole. Construction of IceCube, the largest neutrino detector built to date, was completed in 2011 and enabled the discovery of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos. We describe here the design, production, and calibration of the IceCube digital optical module (DOM), the cable systems, computing hardware, and our methodology for drilling and deployment. We also describe the online triggering and data filtering systems that select candidate neutrino and cosmic ray events for analysis. Due to a rigorous pre-deployment protocol, 98.4% of the DOMs in the deep ice are operating and collecting data. IceCube routinely achieves a detector uptime of 99% by emphasizing software stability and monitoring. Abstract

A measurement of electron antineutrino oscillation by the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment is described in detail. Six 2.9-GW$_{\rm th}$ nuclear power reactors of the Daya Bay and Ling Ao nuclear power facilities served as intense sources of $\overline{\nu}_{e}$'s. Comparison of the $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ rate and energy spectrum measured by antineutrino detectors far from the nuclear reactors ($\sim$1500-1950 m) relative to detectors near the reactors ($\sim$350-600 m) allowed a precise measurement of $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ disappearance. More than 2.5 million $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ inverse beta decay interactions were observed, based on the combination of 217 days of operation of six antineutrino detectors (Dec. 2011--Jul. 2012) with a subsequent 1013 days using the complete configuration of eight detectors (Oct. 2012--Jul. 2015). The $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ rate observed at the far detectors relative to the near detectors showed a significant deficit, $R=0.949 \pm 0.002(\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.002(\mathrm{syst.})$. The energy dependence of $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ disappearance showed the distinct variation predicted by neutrino oscillation. Analysis using an approximation for the three-flavor oscillation probability yielded the flavor-mixing angle $\sin^22\theta_{13}=0.0841 \pm 0.0027(\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.0019(\mathrm{syst.})$ and the effective neutrino mass-squared difference of $\left|{\Delta}m^2_{\mathrm{ee}}\right|=(2.50 \pm 0.06(\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.06(\mathrm{syst.})) \times 10^{-3}\ {\rm eV}^2$. Analysis using the exact three-flavor probability found ${\Delta}m^2_{32}=(2.45 \pm 0.06(\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.06(\mathrm{syst.})) \times 10^{-3}\ {\rm eV}^2$ assuming the normal neutrino mass hierarchy and ${\Delta}m^2_{32}=(-2.56 \pm 0.06(\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.06(\mathrm{syst.})) \times 10^{-3}\ {\rm eV}^2$ for the inverted hierarchy., Comment: 44 pages, 44 figures

Abstract

The disappearance of reactor $\bar{\nu}_e$ observed by the Daya Bay experiment is examined in the framework of a model in which the neutrino is described by a wave packet with a relative intrinsic momentum dispersion $\sigma_\text{rel}$. Three pairs of nuclear reactors and eight antineutrino detectors, each with good energy resolution, distributed among three experimental halls, supply a high-statistics sample of $\bar{\nu}_e$ acquired at nine different baselines. This provides a unique platform to test the effects which arise from the wave packet treatment of neutrino oscillation. The modified survival probability formula was used to fit Daya Bay data, providing the first experimental limits: $2.38 \cdot 10^{-17} < \sigma_{\rm rel} < 0.23$. Treating the dimensions of the reactor cores and detectors as constraints, the limits are improved: $10^{-14} \lesssim \sigma_{\rm rel} < 0.23$, and an upper limit of $\sigma_{\rm rel} <0.20$ is obtained. All limits correspond to a 95\% C.L. Furthermore, the effect due to the wave packet nature of neutrino oscillation is found to be insignificant for reactor antineutrinos detected by the Daya Bay experiment thus ensuring an unbiased measurement of the oscillation parameters $\sin^22\theta_{13}$ and $\Delta m^2_{32}$ within the plane wave model.

Abstract

A new measurement of the reactor antineutrino flux and energy spectrum by the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment is reported. The antineutrinos were generated by six 2.9~GW$_{\mathrm{th}}$ nuclear reactors and detected by eight antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (560~m and 600~m flux-weighted baselines) and one far (1640~m flux-weighted baseline) underground experimental halls. With 621 days of data, more than 1.2 million inverse beta decay (IBD) candidates were detected. The IBD yield in the eight detectors was measured, and the ratio of measured to predicted flux was found to be $0.946\pm0.020$ ($0.992\pm0.021$) for the Huber+Mueller (ILL+Vogel) model. A 2.9~$\sigma$ deviation was found in the measured IBD positron energy spectrum compared to the predictions. In particular, an excess of events in the region of 4-6~MeV was found in the measured spectrum, with a local significance of 4.4~$\sigma$.
