The rise of large, market-concentrating technology firms like Amazon, Inc. is driving commentators, regulators, and politicians to rethink the law of antitrust. In particular, "New Antitrust" reformers propose that the narrow focus on consumer welfare has caused antitrust law to stop too short in corralling the broader social and economic consequences of Big Tech's "bigness." Proponents of the consumer welfare standard argue that it has worked well to distinguish beneficial competition from harmful aggression and, further, to reduce costly legal uncertainty. There is now momentum for substantial reform to antitrust law and practice and a growing debate about what such reform might include. This Article contributes to the debate by presenting a modest case study of a market that is evolving on Amazon, Inc.'s Marketplace platform: the market for nonprescription components of continuous positive air pressure (CPAP) machines, medical devices prescribed to patients suffering from sleep apnea. The study reveals two observations. First, the underlying economic and doctrinal logic of consumer welfare antitrust remains sound. Second, the study illustrates positive social consequences beyond just the economic wealth and welfare that the consumer welfare standard uses as its lodestar. This Article focuses on the second observation because New Antitrust reformers' core claim is that proponents of the consumer welfare approach are wrong to dismiss indirect negative social and economic consequences of bigness, such as harm to small business, stifling of innovation, and inequality. This Article follows the New Antitrust reformers into this space by illustrating counterbalancing social and economic consequences from Amazon's consolidation, including a thriving network of small and innovative dealers, other small innovators that serve them, increased employment opportunities, and even lowering of healthcare costs. Amazon has grown large and has concentrated online retail and related logistics, but its largeness has spurred innovation, competition, and social value-creation just upstream. The journal Fisheries Oceanography provides a global forum for fisheries scientists and oceanographers to understand how marine ecosystems, and the services they provide to society, are structured and shaped by environmental variability and climate change. With this special issue, as well as the 30th Anniversary Virtual Issue of the most influential papers from the journal's history, we commemorate 30 years of publishing leading research in the field of fisheries oceanography. These issues showcase the extent, depth and impact of the research published in Fisheries Oceanography. We also reflect on the evolution of research themes through the journal's history, and highlight key emergent themes in our field. • Advances in small molecule drug design have reduced molecule-based attrition. • Today's design strategies must accelerate the realization of target potential. • Rapid identification of risk-balanced clinical candidates enables target evaluation. • Clinical experience informs meaningful differentiation strategies. • Ensuring druggability of high confidence targets will improve the odds of success. Successful small-molecule drug design requires a molecular target with inherent therapeutic potential and a molecule with the right properties to unlock its potential. Present-day drug design strategies have evolved to leave little room for improvement in drug-like properties. As a result, inadequate safety or efficacy associated with molecular targets now constitutes the primary cause of attrition in preclinical development through Phase II. This finding has led to a deeper focus on target selection. In this current reality, design tactics that enable rapid identification of risk-balanced clinical candidates, translation of clinical experience into meaningful differentiation strategies, and expansion of the druggable proteome represent significant levers by which drug designers can accelerate the discovery of the next generation of medicines. Background and purpose -- Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is an effective and common procedure. However, persistent pain and analgesic requirement up to 2 years after THA surgery are common. We examined the trends in the utilization of analgesics before and after THA, overall, and in relation to socioeconomic status (SES) in a populationbased cohort. Patients and methods -- We used the Danish Hip Arthroplasty Register to identify 103,209 patients who underwent THA between 1996 and 2018. Data on prescriptions and SES markers was obtained from Danish medical databases. Prevalence rates of redeemed prescriptions for analgesics with 95% confidence intervals were calculated for 4 quarters before and 4 quarters after THA for the entire THA population, and by 3 SES markers (education, cohabiting status, and wealth). Results -- Overall, the prevalence of analgesic use prior to surgery was 42% at 9--12 months and 59% at 0--3 months before the THA. The prevalence of analgesics reached its highest at 64% 0--3 months after THA but declined to 27% at 9--12 months after THA. Low education, living alone, and having low wealth (low SES) were associated with higher prevalence of analgesics use both before and after THA. Interpretation -- 59% of patients used analgesics 0--3 months before surgery, which could indicate that THA might not be considered the last option for treatment and that surgery criteria might depend more on factors such as patient preferences or hip function. Moreover, health professionals should prioritize the use of a detailed plan when phasing out analgesics after THA to counteract unnecessary use, especially when treating patients with low SES. Understanding the factors associated with vaccine scepticism is challenging because of the 'small‐pockets' problem: The number of highly vaccine‐sceptical people is low, and small subsamples such as these can be missed using traditional regression approaches. To overcome this problem, the current study (N = 5,200) used latent profile analysis to uncover six profiles, including two micro‐communities of vaccine‐sceptical people who have the potential to jeopardize vaccine‐led herd immunity. The most vaccine‐sceptical group (1.14%) was highly educated and expressed strong liberal tendencies. This group was also the most sceptical about genetically modified crops and nuclear energy, and most likely to receive news about science from the Internet. The second‐most vaccine‐sceptical group (3.4%) was young, poorly educated, and politically extreme (both left and right). In resolving the small‐pockets problem, the current analyses also help reconcile competing theoretical perspectives about the role of education and political ideology in shaping anti‐vaccination views. In the North Atlantic, euphausiids (krill) form a major link between primary production and predators including commercially exploited fish. This basin is warming very rapidly, with species expected to shift northwards following their thermal tolerances. Here we show, however, that there has been a 50% decline in surface krill abundance over the last 60 years that occurred in situ, with no associated range shift. While we relate these changes to the warming climate, our study is the first to document an in situ squeeze on living space within this system. The warmer isotherms are shifting measurably northwards but cooler isotherms have remained relatively static, stalled by the subpolar fronts in the NW Atlantic. Consequently the two temperatures defining the core of krill distribution (7–13 °C) were 8° of latitude apart 60 years ago but are presently only 4° apart. Over the 60 year period the core latitudinal distribution of euphausiids has remained relatively stable so a 'habitat squeeze', with loss of 4° of latitude in living space, could explain the decline in krill. This highlights that, as the temperature warms, not all species can track isotherms and shift northward at the same rate with both losers and winners emerging under the 'Atlantification' of the sub-Arctic. Martin Edwards et al. use data spanning from 1958–2017 from the Continuous Plankton Recorder Survey of the North Atlantic Ocean to examine krill distribution and abundance in conjunction with sea surface temperatures and show a 50% decline in surface krill abundance with no associated range shift. These data show that where the northern and southern distributions were previously separated by 8° of latitude, they are now separated by 4°, indicating a warming-induced range constriction. Cupriavidus necator H16 is gaining significant attention as a microbial chassis for range of biotechnological applications. While the bacterium is a major producer of bioplastics, its lithoautotrophic and versatile metabolic capabilities make the bacterium a promising microbial chassis for biofuels and chemicals using renewable resources. It remains necessary to develop appropriate experimental resources to permit controlled bioengineering and system optimization of this microbe. In this study, we employed statistical design of experiments to gain understanding of the impact of components of defined media on C. necator growth and built a model that can predict the bacterium's cell density based on medium components. This highlighted medium components, and interaction between components, having the most effect on growth: fructose, amino acids, trace elements, CaCl2, and Na2HPO4 contributed significantly to growth (t values of < -1.65 or >1.65); copper and histidine were found to interact and must be balanced for robust growth. Our model was experimentally validated and found to correlate well (r² = 0.85). Model validation at large culture scales showed correlations between our model-predicted growth ranks and experimentally determined ranks at 100 ml in shake flasks (ρ = 0.87) and 1 liter in a bioreactor (ρ = 0.90). Our approach provides valuable and quantifiable insights on the impact of medium components on cell growth and can be applied to model other C. necator responses that are crucial for its deployment as a microbial chassis. Aim: Phytoplankton form the basis of the marine food web and are responsible for approximately 50% of the world's photosynthesis. Changes to their ecology are, therefore, important: here, we examined seasonal patterns in ocean phytoplankton abundance for 45 taxa over 59 years collected from circa 410,000 km of line‐transect sampling at temperate latitudes. Location: The North Sea. Methods: For our analysis we used plankton abundance data from the Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) survey, sea surface temperature measurements from the Hadley Centre, UK Meteorological Office and wind speed data from the International Comprehensive Ocean–Atmosphere Data Set, NOAA. Results: We found large differences in changes in the timing of peak abundance between the major phytoplankton groups. Late‐summer blooming dinoflagellates (n = 10 taxa) tended to show a large seasonal advancement, the timing of peak abundance for dinoflagellates as group advancing 39 days over these six decades. By contrast diatoms (n = 35) did not show any change as a group in their timing of peak abundance over the time series. Granger causality testing suggested a major driver of these phenological changes has been ocean warming in general but more specifically the rate of spring temperature rise as the most important factor. We also found differences in the timing of peak abundance of harmful algal bloom taxa, with some showing peak abundance earlier while others have moved later. Main conclusions: There has been a fundamental transformation of the classic seasonal progression from blooms of diatoms to dinoflagellates, which lies at the heart of temperate marine food chains, as the classic bimodal diatom and dinoflagellate seasonal peaks are eroded to a more continuous, single, longer‐lasting phytoplankton peak. BACKGROUND: The impact of vestibular loss (VL) on cognition has been previously studied in experimental animal, human and adult patient studies showing links between VL, and cognitive impairments in space orientation, working memory, mental rotation and selective attention. However, few studies have been conducted on children with VL. OBJECTIVE: We investigated for the first time, the impact of a VL on children's cognition. METHODS: 13 children with VL (10 years, 5 months) and 60 average-age matched controls performed a neuropsychological assessment consisting of visuospatial working memory, selective visual attention, mental rotation and space orientation tasks. RESULTS: Children with VL recalled smaller sequences for both forward and backward memory subtasks (mean±SD = 6.3±1.9 and 5.3±2.6) than controls (8.2±2.3 and 7.3±2.0), have less accurate mental rotation scores (25.4±6 versus 30.8±5.1) and greater additional distance travelled in the maze task (96.4±66.6 versus 60.4±66.3); all corrected p-values <0.05. Selective visual attention measures do not show significant differences. CONCLUSIONS: Children with VL show similar cognitive difficulties that adults with VL, in tasks involving dynamic cognitive processes (higher attentional load) that in tasks requiring static cognitive processes such as visual attention task. This article discusses the EU's response to the recent Libyan 'migration crisis'. The central Mediterranean migration route, via Libya, is now the principal route for mixed flows into the EU – primarily owing to the non-existence of a Libyan state to enforce migration controls in collaboration with the EU. The situation in Libya itself is dire, with extensive human rights violations committed against mostly African migrants. While the EU's efforts to curb migration from Libya through enhanced maritime patrol operations have been largely unsuccessful, the recent Italian–Libyan collaboration seems to have led to a significant reduction in the number of migrants departing from Libya's shores. In addition, the EU has also been enlisting transit countries further south – Niger, in particular – in its migration control efforts, with the provision of financial and other resources for capacity-building in migration management. Overall, the EU persists with buttressing its fortress, continues to push for the external hosting of refugee populations within the region and intensifies its collaboration with countries with a dismal track record in terms of respecting the rights of migrants and refugees. Increased migration across the Mediterranean to Europe during 2015 was associated with growing interest in generating new research evidence to assist policymakers in understanding the complexities of migration and improve policy responses. In the UK, this was reflected in funding by the Economic and Social Research Council for a Mediterranean Migration Research Programme. Drawing on evidence from the programme, this volume explores the nature of Europe's 'migration crisis' and the extent to which the development of new migration management policies was grounded in evidence about the causes, drivers and consequences of migration to Europe. The authors conclude that there is a substantial 'gap' between the now significant body of evidence examining migration processes and European Union policy responses. This gap is attributed to three main factors: the long-standing 'paradigm war' in social research between positivist, interpretivist and critical approaches which means that what counts as 'evidence' is contested; competing knowledge claims associated with research and other forms of evidence used to construct and/or support policy narratives; and, perhaps most importantly, the politics of policymaking, which has resulted in policies based on underlying assumptions and vested interests rather than research evidence, even where this evidence is funded directly by European governments. In the past, partitions of the global ocean have been commonly carried out using relatively few environmental or biological variables. Although such partitions are undoubtedly useful on a global scale, we show that, at a basin scale, the use of a large number of biological variables greatly improves the accuracy of a partition. Lecture capture is widely used within higher education as a means of recording lecture material for online student viewing. However, there is some uncertainty around whether this is a uniformly positive development for students. The current study examines the impact of lecture capture introduction and usage in a compulsory second year research methods module in a undergraduate BSc degree. Data collected from a matched cohort before (N = 161) and after (N = 160) lecture capture introduction showed that attendance substantially dropped in three matched lectures after capture became available. Attendance, which predicts higher attainment (controlling for students' previous grade and gender), mediates a negative relationship between lecture capture availability and attainment. Lecture capture viewing shows no significant relationship with attainment whilst factoring in lecture attendance; capture viewing also fails to compensate for the impact that low attendance has on attainment. Thus, the net effect of lecture capture introduction on the cohort is generally negative; the study serves as a useful example (that can be communicated students) of the pitfalls of an over-reliance on lecture capture as a replacement for lecture attendance. Massive pulmonary embolus (PE), defined as hemodynamic shock from acute PE, is a life-threatening condition. Deaths from massive PE, especially when unsuspected, occur within minutes to hours of onset and as such prompt intervention can be lifesaving. Acute massive PE patients have traditionally been candidates for treatment with intravenous systemic thrombolysis to improve pulmonary artery pressure, arteriovenous oxygenation, and pulmonary perfusion in an effort to reduce mortality. However, patients with contraindications to systemic thrombolysis or those who have failed thrombolysis may benefit from other techniques including endovascular and surgical embolectomy. Electrochemical measurements of the nucleation rate of individual H2 bubbles at the surface of Pt nanoelectrodes (radius = 7-41 nm) are used to determine the critical size and geometry of H2 nuclei leading to stable bubbles. Precise knowledge of the H2 concentration at the electrode surface,CH2surf, is obtained by controlled current reduction of H+ in a H2SO4 solution. Induction times of singlebubble nucleation events are measured by stepping the current, to control CH2surf, while monitoring the voltage. We find that gas nucleation follows a first-order rate process; a bubble spontaneously nucleates after a stochastic time delay, as indicated by a sudden voltage spike that results from impeded transport of H+ to the electrode. Hundreds of individual induction times, at different applied currents and using different Pt nanoelectrodes, are used to characterize the kinetics of phase nucleation. The rate of bubble nucleation increases by four orders of magnitude (0.3-2000 s-1) over a very small relative change in CH2surf (0.21-0.26 M, corresponding to a ~0.025 V increase in driving force). Classical nucleation theory yields thermodynamic radii of curvature for critical nuclei of 4.4 to 5.3 nm, corresponding to internal pressures of 330 to 270 atm, and activation energies for nuclei formation of 14 to 26 kT, respectively. The dependence of nucleation rate on H2 concentration indicates that nucleation occurs by a heterogeneous mechanism, where the nuclei have a contact angle of ~150° with the electrode surface and contain between 35 and 55 H2 molecules. A comparison of the electrochemical performance of noble metal, sp 2 - and sp 3 -carbon electrodes towards the reduction of concentrated hypochlorite (ClO − ; 0.02 M–1.88 M), an alkaline (pH ~ 13) and chemically oxidising solution, is presented. Boron-doped diamond (BDD) gave no discernible electrochemical response whilst all other electrodes showed an electrochemically irreversible cathodic response in the following order (most facile electron transfer): Pt > Au > edge-plane pyrolytic graphite (EPPG) ≈ sp 2 -carbon containing BDD > basal plane pyrolytic graphite > glassy carbon ≈ highly-ordered pyrolytic graphite. Reduction at sp 2 -BDD occurred at a similar potential to EPPG, but with much lower currents, suggesting edge-plane-like sites are the active sp 2 sites in this sp 2 -BDD, but at much lower surface coverage than in EPPG. Finally, both EPPG and sp 2 -BDD showed linear current versus [ClO − ] responses over the concentration range 0.02 M–1.41 M ( R 2 > 0.995). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the high use of social media in graduate recruitment campaigns, research has yet to examine how it compares with websites and videos in influencing job seekers' reactions. Drawing from recruitment, media richness, and source credibility theories, we proposed that the media used to present recruitment material would influence organizational attraction via perceptions of media richness and source credibility. Results of a between-subjects study, with 342 participants holding or working toward a degree, show that when a standardized recruitment message is delivered via Facebook, video, or text-based webpage media, there are significant between-media richness and source credibility differences. Furthermore, particular media richness features were positively related to perceptions of source credibility, and source credibility perceptions were positively related to organizational attraction. This article describes the dynamic steady state of individual H2 nanobubbles generated by H+ reduction at inlaid and recessed Pt nanodisk electrodes. Electrochemical measurements coupled with finite element simulations allow analysis of the nanobubble geometry at dynamic equilibrium. We demonstrate that a bubble is sustainable at Pt nanodisks due to the balance of nanobubble shrinkage due to H2 dissolution and growth due to H2 electrogeneration. Specifically, simulations are used to predict stable geometries of the H2/Pt/solution three-phase interface and the width of exposed Pt at the disk circumference required to sustain the nanobubble via steady-state H2 electrogeneration. Experimentally measured currents, iss, corresponding to the electrogeneration of H2, at or near the three-phase interface, needed to sustain the nanobubble are between 0.2 and 2.4 nA for Pt nanodisk electrodes with radii between 2.5 and 40 nm. However, simple theoretical analysis shows that the diffusion-limited currents required to sustain such a single nanobubble at an inlaid Pt nanodisk are 1-2 orders larger than the observed values. Finite element simulation of the dynamic steady state of a nanobubble at an inlaid disk also demonstrates that the expected steady-state currents are much larger than the experimental currents. Better agreement between the simulated and experimental values of iss is obtained by considering recession of the Pt disk nanoelectrode below the plane of the insulating surface, which reduces the outward flux of H2 from the nanobubble and results in smaller values of iss. Conspectus: Ion current rectification (ICR) refers to the asymmetric potential-dependent rate of the passage of solution ions through a nanopore, giving rise to electrical current–voltage characteristics that mimic those of a solid-state electrical diode. Since the discovery of ICR in quartz nanopipettes two decades ago, synthetic nanopores and nanochannels of various geometries, fabricated in membranes and on wafers, have been extensively investigated to understand fundamental aspects of ion transport in highly confined geometries. It is now generally accepted that ICR requires an asymmetric electrical double layer within the nanopore, producing an accumulation or depletion of charge-carrying ions at opposite voltage polarities. Our research groups have recently explored how the voltage-dependent ion distributions and ICR within nanopores can induce novel nanoscale flow phenomena that have applications in understanding ionics in porous materials used in energy storage devices, chemical sensing, and low-cost electrical pumping of fluids. In this Account, we review our most recent investigations on this topic, based on experiments using conical nanopores (10–300 nm tip opening) fabricated in thin glass, mica, and polymer membranes. Measurable fluid flow in nanopores can be induced either using external pressure forces, electrically via electroosmotic forces, or by a combination of these two forces. We demonstrate that pressure-driven flow can greatly alter the electrical properties of nanopores and, vice versa, that the nonlinear electrical properties of conical nanopores can impart novel and useful flow phenomena. Electroosmotic flow (EOF), which depends on the magnitude of the ion fluxes within the double layer of the nanopore, is strongly coupled to the accumulation/depletion of ions. Thus, the same underlying cause of ICR also leads to EOF rectification, i.e., unequal flows occurring for the same voltage but opposite polarities. EOF rectification can be used to electrically pump fluids with very precise control across membranes containing conical pores via the application of a symmetric sinusoidal voltage. The combination of pressure and asymmetric EOF can also provide a means to generate new nanopore electrical behaviors, including negative differential resistance (NDR), in which the current through a conical pore decreases with increasing driving force (applied voltage), similar to solid-state tunnel diodes. NDR results from a positive feedback mechanism between the ion distributions and EOF, yielding a true bistability in both fluid flow and electrical current at a critical applied voltage. Nanopore-based NDR is extremely sensitive to the surface charge near the nanopore opening, suggesting possible applications in chemical sensing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Young-Laplace equation is central to the thermodynamic description of liquids with highly curved interfaces, e.g., nanoscale droplets and their inverse, nanoscale bubbles. The equation relates the pressure difference across an interface to its surface tension and radius of curvature, but the validity in using the macroscopic surface tension for describing curved interfaces with radii smaller than tens of nanometers has been questioned. Here we present electrochemical measurement of Laplace pressures within single H2 bubbles between 7 and 200 nm radius (corresponding, respectively, to between 200 and 7 atm). Our results demonstrate a linear relationship between a bubble's Laplace pressure and its reciprocal radius, verifying the classical thermodynamic description of H2 nanobubbles as small as ∼10 nm. BACKGROUND: Preterm birth and social deprivation are known risk factors for learning difficulties. However there has been little work looking into the interaction between these two risks. We aimed to identify if children born preterm to families with higher levels of social deprivation are disproportionately more likely to have learning difficulties than those with lower levels of social deprivation. METHODS: Data from the RANOPS (Respiratory And Neurological Outcomes in children born Preterm Study) was used to assess prevalence of learning difficulties. The effects of preterm birth and deprivation were reviewed. Multi-level logistic regression models were used to examine if gestational age and deprivation impacts interacted after adjustment for possible confounders. Primary outcome measure was parent-reported learning difficulties. Secondary outcome measures were parent-reported behavioural problems and a statement of special educational need. RESULTS: We investigated the developmental outcomes of 6,691 infants with a median age of 5 years at time of survey (IQR 5). Deprivation decile (OR 1.08 (1.03,1.12)) and preterm birth (OR 2.67 (2.02,3.53)) were both associated with increased risk of learning difficulties. There was little evidence for any interaction between preterm birth and deprivation (p = 0.298) and the risk of learning difficulties. CONCLUSIONS: Deprivation and preterm birth have significant associations with learning difficulties. While deprivation does not appear to have potentiated the impact of preterm birth, preterm infants in the most deprived areas have the highest risk of learning difficulties with almost 1 in 3 extremely premature infants with a learning difficulty in the most deprived areas. Significant phenological shifts induced by climate change are projected within the phytoplankton community. However, projections from current Earth System Models (ESMs) understandably rely on simplified community responses that do not consider evolutionary strategies manifested as various phenotypes and trait groups. Here, we use a species‐based modelling approach, combined with large‐scale plankton observations, to investigate past, contemporary and future phenological shifts in diatoms (grouped by their morphological traits) and dinoflagellates in three key areas of the North Atlantic Ocean (North Sea, North‐East Atlantic and Labrador Sea) from 1850 to 2100. Our study reveals that the three phytoplanktonic groups exhibit coherent and different shifts in phenology and abundance throughout the North Atlantic Ocean. The seasonal duration of large flattened (i.e. oblate) diatoms is predicted to shrink and their abundance to decline, whereas the phenology of slow‐sinking elongated (i.e. prolate) diatoms and of dinoflagellates is expected to expand and their abundance to rise, which may alter carbon export in this important sink region. The increase in prolates and dinoflagellates, two groups currently not considered in ESMs, may alleviate the negative influence of global climate change on oblates, which are responsible of massive peaks of biomass and carbon export in spring. We suggest that including prolates and dinoflagellates in models may improve our understanding of the influence of global climate change on the biological carbon cycle in the oceans. Background Modern cerebral blood flow (CBF) detection favors the use of either optical technologies that are limited to cortical brain regions, or expensive magnetic resonance. Decades ago, inhalation gas clearance was the choice method of quantifying CBF, but this suffered from poor temporal resolution. Electrolytic H 2 clearance (EHC) generates and collects gas in situ at an electrode pair, which improves temporal resolution, but the probe size has prohibited meaningful subcortical use. New method We microfabricated EHC electrodes to an order of magnitude smaller than those existing, on the scale of 100 μm, to permit use deep within the brain. Results Novel EHC probes were fabricated. The devices offered exceptional signal-to-noise, achieved high collection efficiencies (40–50%) in vitro, and agreed with theoretical modeling. An in vitro chemical reaction model was used to confirm that our devices detected flow rates higher than those expected physiologically. Computational modeling that incorporated realistic noise levels demonstrated devices would be sensitive to physiological CBF rates. Comparison with existing method The reduced size of our arrays makes them suitable for subcortical EHC measurements, as opposed to the larger, existing EHC electrodes that would cause substantial tissue damage. Our array can collect multiple CBF measurements per minute, and can thus resolve physiological changes occurring on a shorter timescale than existing gas clearance measurements. Conclusion We present and characterize microfabricated EHC electrodes and an accompanying theoretical model to interpret acquired data. This study evaluated whether apraxia can be understood as due to impaired motor representations or motor imagery necessary for appropriate object-use, imitation, and pantomime. The causal role of the left inferior parietal lobe (IPL), which is heavily implicated in apraxia, is also evaluated. These processes are appraised in light of the proposed ventro-dorsal sub-stream of the classic two visual pathway model, where perceptual information from the ventral stream and the dorsal action stream are integrated and essential for object manipulation. Using a task assessing object-use perception, stroke patients with apraxia demonstrated a selective deficit during perceptual decisions reliant on the integration of visible and known object properties to select the appropriate grasp for object-use. This deficit increased with apraxia severity. A dissociation was evident in these patients showing intact non-motoric perceptual decisions regarding the functional semantic relationship between two objects in the absence of the actor (e.g. how a hammer hits a nail). Converging evidence was found using a modified version of the same task in a neuromodulation study that directly targeted the left IPL in healthy participants using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). Application of inhibitory stimulation over the left IPL reduced performance during perceptual decisions regarding object manipulation whilst performance was unaffected during functional semantic decisions. Excitatory stimulation of the left IPL did not affect performance in either task. Combined, these results suggest that the left inferior parietal lobe is critical for motor imagery, and that apraxia may be caused by an inability to use internal motor representations of object manipulation. These results are discussed in terms of motoric and non-motoric perceptual processes and the proposal of an additional ventro-dorsal sub-stream within the dorsal and ventral visual pathways model. Introduction: Although preterm birth is associated with respiratory morbidity in childhood, the role of family history of atopy and whether appropriate treatment has been instituted is unclear. Thus we assessed (i) the prevalence of respiratory symptoms, particularly wheezing, in childhood; (ii) evaluated the role of family history of atopy and mode of delivery, and (iii) documented the drug usage, all in preterm-born children compared to term-born control children. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional population-based questionnaire study of 1–10 year-old preterm-born children (n = 13,361) and matched term-born controls (13,361). Data (n = 7,149) was analysed by gestational groups (24–32 weeks, 33–34 weeks, 35–36 weeks and 37–43 weeks) and by age, <5 years old or ≥ 5 years. Main Results: Preterm born children aged <5 years (n = 2,111, term n = 1,402) had higher rates of wheeze-ever [odds ratio: 2.7 (95% confidence intervals 2.2, 3.3); 1.8 (1.5, 2.2); 1.5 (1.3, 1.8) respectively for the 24–32 weeks, 33–34 weeks, 35–36 weeks groups compared to term]. Similarly for the ≥5 year age group (n = 2,083, term n = 1,456) wheezing increased with increasing prematurity [odds ratios 3.3 (2.7, 4.1), 1.8 (1.5, 2.3) and 1.6 (1.3, 1.9) for the three preterm groups compared to term]. At both age groups, inhaler usage was greater in the lowest preterm group but prematurity-associated wheeze was independent of a family history of atopy. Conclusions: Increasing prematurity was associated with increased respiratory symptoms, which were independent of a family history of atopy. Phytoplankton are crucial to marine ecosystem functioning and are important indicators of environmental change. Phytoplankton data are also essential for informing management and policy, particularly in supporting the new generation of marine legislative drivers, which take a holistic ecosystem approach to management. The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) seeks to achieve Good Environmental Status (GES) of European seas through the implementation of such a management approach. This is a regional scale directive which recognises the importance of plankton communities in marine ecosystems; plankton data at the appropriate spatial, temporal and taxonomic scales are therefore required for implementation. The Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) survey is a multidecadal, North Atlantic–basin scale programme which routinely records approximately 300 phytoplankton taxa. Because of these attributes, the survey plays a key role in the implementation of the MSFD and the assessment of GES in the Northeast Atlantic region. This paper addresses the role of the CPR's phytoplankton time-series in delivering GES through the development and informing of MSFD indicators, the setting of targets against a background of climate change and the provision of supporting information used to interpret change in non-plankton indicators. We also discuss CPR data in the context of other phytoplankton data types that may contribute to GES, as well as explore future possibilities for the use of new and innovative applications of CPR phytoplankton datasets in delivering GES. Since 1997, the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) role in surveillance of member countries has changed dramatically. Surveillance, as mandated in Article IV of the Articles of Agreement, has moved from a private process to a public one, with documentation from the consultation freely available at the Fund's Website. But does this public process of surveillance make a difference in generating policy debates? To answer this question, we evaluate whether the Fund's Article IV review was referenced on Capitol Hill and by the White House during two consecutive reviews in the summers of 2010 and 2011. Given the debate about the debt ceiling, the summer of 2011 is a most likely case for the Fund's advice to enter into the policy process. Research highlights that internal visual, external visual and kinesthetic imagery differentially effect motor performance ( White & Hardy, 1995 ; Hardy & Callow, 1999). However, patterns of brain activation subserving these different imagery perspectives and modalities have not yet been established. In the current study, we applied the Vividness of Movement Imagery Questionnaire-2 (VMIQ-2) to study the brain activation underpinning these types of imagery. Participants with high imagery ability (using the VMIQ-2) were selected to participate in the study. The experimental conditions involved imagining an action (one item from the VMIQ-2) using internal visual imagery, external visual imagery, kinesthetic imagery and a perceptual control condition involved looking at a fixation cross. The imagery conditions were presented using a block design and the participants’ brain activation was recorded using 3T fMRI. A post-experimental questionnaire was administered to test if participants were able to maintain the imagery during the task and if they switched between the imagery perspective/modalities. Four participants failed to adhere to the imagery conditions, and their data was excluded from analysis. As hypothesized, the different perspectives and modalities of imagery elicited both common areas of activation (in the right supplementary motor area, BA6) and dissociated areas of activation. Specifically, internal visual imagery activated occipital, parietal and frontal brain areas (i.e., the dorsal stream) while external visual imagery activated occipital ventral stream areas and kinesthetic imagery activated caudate and cerebellum areas. These results provide the first central evidence for the visual perspectives and modalities delineated in the VMIQ-2, and, initial biological validity for the VMIQ-2. A theoretical model is proposed to describe the steady-state average limiting current associated with a single redox moiety (ox or red) trapped in a closed generator-collector system along with excess supporting electrolyte. By "closed" we mean that neither solvent nor solutes can enter or leave the system. The potential difference, EOE - ERE, between the oxidizing electrode (OE) and the reducing electrode (RE) is maintained constant with the values of EOE and ERE chosen so that the operative faradaic electrode processes are very fast, i.e., red = ox + nETe- (kox = ∞) at the OE and ox + nETe- = red (kred = ∞) at the RE. Because there is only a single redox moiety the faradaic process occurs at only one electrode at a time while current at the other electrode is purely capacitive (we refer to this as capacitive coupling). We propose that a two-step process is required to transfer nETqe coulombs (qe is the absolute value of the elemental electronic charge). The first step is associated with diffusion (approximated as a random walk) of a single red moiety to the OE where it is oxidized to ox with a concomitant transfer of qstep1 (= nETqe/(1 + AOECOE/ARECRE)) coulombs; the second step is associated with the diffusion (random walk) of the newly formed single ox moiety to the RE with the concomitant transfer of qstep2 (= nETqe/(1 + ARECRE/AOECOE)) coulombs (ARE,AOE and CRE,COEare the areas (cm2) and differential capacitances (farads cm-2) of the corresponding electrodes). The total charge transferred in the two steps is nETqe(= qstep1 + qstep2). Transport of the redox moiety from one electrode to the other is accomplished by a random walk. The probability density function (pdf) and cumulative density function (CDF) for the duration of a full redox cycle are presented as the analytical solution to a 1-dimensional bounded random-walk problem (confirmed by numerical simulation). These show that tfull, the average time for the full redox cycle (step 1 + step 2), is equal to L2/D where L is the intraelectrode distance and D is the diffusion coefficient. Background and Objectives: Preterm-born participants are at risk of long-term deficits in percentage predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 s (%FEV1). Since it is unclear if these deficits respond to bronchodilators, we systematically reviewed the evidence for reversibility of deficits in %FEV1 by bronchodilators in preterm-born participants. Design: Studies reporting a change in %FEV1 in response to bronchodilator treatment in preterm-born participants at ≥5 years of age, with or without a term-born control group, were identified. The quality of studies was assessed by adapted tools. Due to considerable heterogeneity between studies, formal meta-analysis was not possible. Results: From 8,839 titles, 22 studies were identified after an updated search in May 2013. Twenty-one studies assessed the response to a single inhaled dose of a bronchodilator, and 1 study assessed longer-term effects. Most studies observed decreased %FEV1 in preterm-born participants compared with controls. Most studies observed improved %FEV1 after a single dose of bronchodilator, with the largest improvements noted in those with bronchopulmonary dysplasia, who had greater deficits of %FEV1 when compared with preterm and term controls. One long-term study investigated a 2-week terbutaline administration, but the initial FEV1 after a single dose did not show a change in %FEV1 of ≥15%, but 5/29 (17%) children had an increased %FEV1 of ≥10%. Conclusions: In this systematic review, disparate studies were identified. Although single doses of bronchodilators appear to improve the FEV1 in the short term, further studies are required to assess their longer-term benefits not only on airway obstruction, but also their effect on respiratory symptoms. © 2015 S. Pelagic fishes are among the most ecologically and economically important fish species in European seas. In principle, these pelagic fishes have potential to demonstrate rapid abundance and distribution shifts in response to climatic variability due to their high adult motility, planktonic larval stages, and low dependence on benthic habitat for food or shelter during their life histories. Here, we provide evidence of substantial climate-driven changes to the structure of pelagic fish communities in European shelf seas. We investigated the patterns of species-level change using catch records from 57 870 fisheries-independent survey trawls from across European continental shelf region between 1965 and 2012. We analysed changes in the distribution and rate of occurrence of the six most common species, and observed a strong subtropicalization of the North Sea and Baltic Sea assemblages. These areas have shifted away from cold-water assemblages typically characterized by Atlantic herring and European sprat from the 1960s to 1980s, to warmer-water assemblages including Atlantic mackerel, Atlantic horse mackerel, European pilchard and European anchovy from the 1990s onwards. We next investigated if warming sea temperatures have forced these changes using temporally comprehensive data from the North Sea region. Our models indicated the primary driver of change in these species has been sea surface temperatures in all cases. Together, these analyses highlight how individual species responses have combined to result in a dramatic subtropicalization of the pelagic fish assemblage of the European continental shelf. Iontophoresis uses a current to eject solution from the tip of a barrel formed from a pulled glass capillary and has been employed as a method of drug delivery for neurochemical investigations. Much attention has been devoted to resolving perhaps the greatest limitation of iontophoresis, die inability to determine the concentration of substances delivered by ejections. To further address this issue, we evaluate the properties of typical ejections such as barrel solution velocity and its relation to the ejection current using an amperometric and liquid chromatographic approach. These properties were used to predict the concentration distribution of ejected solute that was then confirmed by fluorescence microscopy. Additionally, incorporation of oppositely charged fluorophores into the barrel investigated die role of migration on the mass transport of an ejected species. Results indicate that location relative to the barrel tip is the primary influence on the distribution of ejected species. At short distances (<100 µm), advection from electroosmotic transport of the barrel solution may significantly contribute to the distribution, but this effect can be minimized through the use of low to moderate ejection currents. However, as the distance from the source increases (>100µm), even solute ejected using high currents exhibits diflusion-limited behavior. Lastly a time-dependent theoretical model was constructed and is used with experimental fluorescent profiles to demonstrate how iontophoresis can generate near-uniform concentration distributions near the ejection source. Preterm birth, low birth weight and poor foetal nutrition have been linked to cardiovascular disease, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We explored prematurity and vascular function by studying a UK cohort of 14 049 children and conducting a systematic review. Conclusion Systolic blood pressure was higher in subjects born preterm than term, but there were no differences in endothelial dysfunction or arterial stiffness. Abstract: A large scale analysis of sea surface temperature (SST) and climate variability over the North Atlantic and its interactions with plankton over the North East Atlantic was carried out to better understand what drives both temperature and species abundance. The spatio-temporal pattern of SST was found to correspond to known climate indices, namely the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), the East Atlantic Pattern (EAP) and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). The spatial influence of these indices is heterogeneous. Although the AMO is present across all regions, it is most strongly represented in the SST signal in the subpolar gyre region. The NAO instead is strongly weighted in the North Sea and the pattern of its influence is oscillatory in space with a wavelength of approximately 6000km. Natural oscillations might obscure the influence of climate change effects, making it difficult to determine how much of the variation is attributable to longer term trends. In order to separate the influences of different climate signals the SST signals were decomposed in to spatial and temporal components using principal component analysis (PCA). A similar analysis is carried out on various indicator species of plankton: Calanus finmarchicus, Phytoplankton Colour Index and total copepod abundance, as well as phytoplankton and zooplankton communities. By comparing the two outputs it is apparent that the dominant driver is the recent warming trend, which has a negative influence on C. finmarchicus and total copepods, but has a positive one on phytoplankton colour. However natural oscillations also influence the abundance of plankton, in particular the AMO is a driver of diatom abundance. Fourier principal component analysis, an approach which is novel in terms of the ecological data, was used to analyse the behaviour of various communities averaged over space. The zooplankton community is found to be primarily influenced by climate warming trends. The analysis provides compelling evidence for the hypothesis that cold water species are gradually being replaced by more temperate species in the North Atlantic. This may have detrimental effects for the entire marine ecosystem, by affecting on organisms such as fish larva for example. The second group, a phytoplankton subset consisting primarily of diatom species, is primarily influenced by the AMO rather than the average temperature trend. This result highlights the importance of natural oscillations to certain functional groups, in particular those subgroups which are less directly metabolically affected by changes in temperature. Data were analysed using Review Manager and STATA. The quality of the studies was assessed.Results: From 8839 titles, 1124 full articles were screened and 59 were included: 28 studied preterm-born children without BPD, 24 with BPD28 (supplemental oxygen dependency at 28 days), 15 with BPD36 (supplemental oxygen dependency 36 weeks postmenstrual age) and 34 born preterm. For the preterm-born group without BPD and for the BPD28 and BPD36 groups the mean differences (and 95% CIs) for %FEV1 compared with term-born controls were -7.2% (-8.7% to -5.6%), -16.2% (-19.9% to -12.4%) and -18.9% (-21.1% to -16.7%), respectively. Against the backdrop of warming of the Northern Hemisphere it has recently been acknowledged that North Atlantic temperature changes undergo considerable variability over multidecadal periods. The leading component of natural low-frequency temperature variability has been termed the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). Presently, correlative studies on the biological impact of the AMO on marine ecosystems over the duration of a whole AMO cycle (∼60 years) is largely unknown due to the rarity of continuously sustained biological observations at the same time period. To test whether there is multidecadal cyclic behaviour in biological time-series in the North Atlantic we used one of the world's longest continuously sustained marine biological time-series in oceanic waters, long-term fisheries data and historical records over the last century and beyond. Our findings suggest that the AMO is far from a trivial presence against the backdrop of continued temperature warming in the North Atlantic and accounts for the second most important macro-trend in North Atlantic plankton records; responsible for habitat switching (abrupt ecosystem/regime shifts) over multidecadal scales and influences the fortunes of various fisheries over many centuries. Previous studies demonstrate that observing the movements of others can interfere with concurrent movement execution. This interference effect is attributed to incongruence between the observed and executed movements. The study presented here examined different aspects of observed and executed movement congruency. Participants attempted to trace straight lines in the air using one of two movement tasks while observing an experimenter perform movements varied by their task and spatial congruency. The data revealed that kinematic aspects of the observed movements were incorporated into the observer's own movements. Observing the same kinematics led to interference or facilitation effects depending on whether the direction of the observed movement was congruent or incongruent with the movement the participant performed. This is the first study to assess sport concussion knowledge and the effect of sport concussion self-report on knowledge in the UK general public. In the online survey, participants (n = 227) stated personal sport concussion history, injury indicators, and rated 26 injury statements for truthfulness using definite (true, false) or non-definite (probably true, probably false) response options. As anticipated, knowledge was limited. Few statement ratings were definite, and misconceptions prevailed. The injury's seriousness was systematically underestimated, suggesting that knowledge may not be sufficient for injury self-diagnosis and self-recovery measures. Sport concussion self-report was associated with more definite than non-definite statement ratings. However, response accuracy did not differ. Previous studies have demonstrated that the observation of action can modulate motor performance. This literature has focused on manipulating the observed goal of the action, rather than examining whether action observation effects could be elicited by changing observed kinematics alone. In the study presented here, observed reach trajectory kinematics unrelated to the goal of the action were manipulated in order to examine whether observed movement kinematics alone could influence the action of the observer. Participants observed an experimenter grasp a target object using either a normal or an exaggeratedly high reaching action (as though reaching over an invisible obstacle). When participants observed the experimenter perform actions with a high reach trajectory, their own movements took on aspects of the observed action, showing greater wrist height throughout their reaching trajectory than under conditions in which they observed normal reaching actions. The data are discussed in relation to previous findings which suggest that kinematic aspects of observed movements can prime action through kinematic or intention based matching processes. Tip position modulation (TPM) involves moving the ultramicroelectrode (UME) tip of a scanning electrochemical microscope (SECM) perpendicular to the substrate in a sinusoidal fashion with a small amplitude compared to the tip/sample separation. The UME, which serves as the working electrode in a conventional voltammetric setup, is held at a potential to detect a species in solution at a transport-limited rate and the resulting current (ac and dc) is measured. This paper shows that tip-induced convection is an important factor in TPM. A model has been developed that describes the TPM response for the most challenging case of an inert substrate, where tip-induced convective effects compared to diffusion are greatest. The model provides an improved description of the ac response compared to existing treatment, as evidenced by the analysis of TPM-SECM approach curves (current-distance characteristics). The extension of the model to SECM-induced transfer is considered and it is shown that one can extract highly precise information on the permeability of a sample from such measurements, for which experiments and theory are compared. The prospects for using the technique more widely are highlighted and routes to improving the theoretical analysis further are briefly discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
