This article contributes a novel dataset mapping the partnership literature in the community engagement field and invites scholars of community-academic partnerships in this field to participate in the development of scoping reviews as a way to effectively scan extant literature as they seek to build upon or critique it. This scoping review includes key article-level characteristics regarding the representation of community-academic partnerships within 141 published articles from seven peer-reviewed journals in the community engagement field.

Engaging students as actors in rather than audience of their education. This is both the primary feature of experiential education as John Dewey envisioned it and its underlying link to education for democracy: the flourishing of democracy requires citizens who are empowered actors, and such citizens cannot be produced through educational processes that deny participation and power to students. In this article we share and examine examples of experiential learning practices that try to walk the talk of democratic purposes and discuss associated challenges and design principles. Our goals are to encourage and empower the community of experiential educators to understand, enact, inquire into, and continue developing the full potential of our work as it contributes to educating for democracy.

Reciprocity is a foundational concept in service-learning and community engagement, yet it is frequently referred to in the literature without precise conceptualization or critical examination, in effect suggesting a shared understanding of the concept among practitioners and scholars. However, understandings and applications of the term vary widely, and unexamined or unintentionally differing conceptualizations of reciprocity can lead to confusion in practice and can hinder research. This article examines meanings of reciprocity from multiple perspectives and highlights the larger implications of how we characterize the concept in research and practice, using the method of concept review. In this concept review we examine the ways in which the concept of reciprocity has been and could be produced and given meaning within the existing body of service-learning and community engagement literature and in other disciplines and epistemologies (e.g., philosophy, evolutionary biology, leadership, Indigenous meaning-making). Central to this concept review is the goal of distinguishing broad categories of meaning so that we and our community engagement colleagues might be able to make more explicit our position with regard to the specific meanings of reciprocity we intend, which in turn can inform our development of research constructs, practices, and interpretations.

We report here the first high resolution mass spectrometric evidence of nickel porphyrins in petroleum. A petroleum asphaltene sample is fractionated by a silica-gel cyclograph. Nickel content is enriched by ~3 fold in one of the cyclograph fractions. The fraction is subsequently analyzed by atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI) Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR MS) with an average mass resolving power of over 500 K (M/[DELTA][M.sub.fwhm]). Similar to vanadyl porphyrins, monocylcoalkano-type (presumed to be deocophylerythro-etioporphyrin DPEP) Ni porphyrins are found to be the most abundant family followed by etio, bicycloalkano-type, and rhodo-monocylcoalkanotype Ni porphyrins. A Z number ranging from -28 to -44 and a carbon number ranging from 26 to 41 were observed. A significant amount of nickel and vanadyl geoporphyrins are in more condensed tetrapyrrolic cores than just chlorophyll-derived DPEP- and etioporphyrins. Ni has a higher etio/DPEP ratio and rhodoetio/rhodo-DPEP ratio than does VO. 10.1021/acg902367n

A two-dimensional separation approach involving gas chromatography (GC) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FF-IR) is used to separate [C.sub.2]-naphthalene isomers at or near baseline resolution. In addition to GC separation, the FT-IR also plays an important role in the separation, as well as its traditional role of detection and identification. This two-dimensional separation approach for the analysis of a [C.sub.2]-naphthalene isomeric mixture is a good example of separation design based on molecular difference and the characteristics of an analytical instrument. The details of this two-dimensional separation are discussed, along with the advantages and limitations of this approach. While two-(or multiple-)dimensional separations have demonstrated superior capabilities in the characterization of complex, largely unknown mixtures, the development of GC x FF-IR illustrates the applicability of this analytical approach in the separation of simpler but still challenging, mixtures. The GC x FT-IR results have extended this approach toward its application to the analysis of samples of more complicated composition.
