A computational methodology is developed for the calculation of radiation heat transfer in a non-scattering medium where nonequilibrium conditions exist and give rise to complex spectra. The specific problem of radiation in an aeroassisted orbital transfer vehicle (AOTV) flowfield is addressed. Nonequilibrium radiation from the gases around a hypersonic vehicle is evaluated using the NASA-Ames NEQAIR program together with a three-dimensional geometrical flowfield model. Nonequilibrium compositions and temperatures are taken from NASA-Langley 3-D hypersonic flowfield calculations that include real-gas effects and finite-rate chemical kinetics. It is shown that the concept of a transmission path adjustment, together with precomputations of curves of growth based upon local properties at flowfield locations, facilitates radiation calculations. Sample calculations of directional and spectral distributions of gas radiation received upon a hypersonic vehicle are presented.

Radiation heat transfer (RHT) from the wake of a hypersonic vehicle to its afterbody is evaluated from Gnoffo and Greene's (1987) calculated wake flowfield and the radiative properties of ionized high-temperature air with the calculated nonequilibrium composition. The 4.2-m aeroassisted flight experiment at an altitude of 75 km and velocity of 8900 m/s causes a 0.1-m-thick layer initially at T = 10,000 K and P = 1 kN/sq m to separate from the shoulder of the forebody heat shield and spread aft to form a wake at approximately T = 5000 K and P = 20 N/sq m. Gas in the separated flow region at approximately T = 3000 K and P = 10 N/sq m, recirculates about the afterbody. It is shown that the radiating layer, recirculating gases, and wake are optically thin for purposes of making engineering RHT calculations. Directional, spectral, and spatial variations of the radiation incident upon the afterbody are presented.

Volume interchange factors are shown to be convenient in modeling the radiative processes in the wake of a hypersonic vehicle. Use of the factors facilitates calculating not just the radiative heating rates on afterbody surfaces but also the radiative de-excitation rates from stimulated emission and re-excitation rates from absorption in rarefied nonequilibrium flows. Sample calculations of volume interchange factors are presented for volume configurations modeling wake elements, and the numerical results are compared to limiting approximations to clarify the operation of the emission, transmission, and absorption processes.

A numerical study has been made of transient heat transfer and fluid flow in a cylindrical enclosure containing a two-layer gas-and-liquid system. The geometric configuration and the boundary conditions of the problem are relevant to the analysis of the preignition processes during the fire accident situation involving a pool of liquid fuel in the vicinity of an ignition source. It is demonstrated that the effects of the natural and thermocapillary convection, radiative transfer, thermal inertia and conduction of the walls bounding the enclosure, as well as, the magnitude of the gravity field play important roles in the development of the temperature and velocity fields in the container.

Four thermal excursions of the Transmitter Experiment Package (TEP) were the result of the depriming of the arteries in all three heat pipes in the Variable Conductance Heat Pipe System which cooled the TEP. The determined cause of the depriming of the heat pipes was the formation of bubbles of the nitrogen/helium control gas mixture in the arteries during the thaw portion of a freeze/thaw cycle of the inactive region of the condenser section of the heat pipe. Conditions such as suction freezeout or heat pipe turn-on, which moved these bubbles into the active region of the heat pipe, contributed to the depriming mechanism. Methods for precluding, or reducing the probability of, this type of failure mechanism in future applications of arterial heat pipes are included.

Program has five operational modes that provide user flexibility in answering crucial heat-pipe design questions. User specifies heat input and rejection distribution.

A research and development program in variable conductance heat pipe technology is reported. The project involved: (1) theoretical and/or experimental studies in hydrostatics, (2) hydrodynamics, (3) heat transfer into and out of the pipe, (4) fluid selection, and (5) materials compatibility. The development, fabrication, and test of the space hardware resulted in a successful flight of the heat pipe experiment on the OAO-3 satellite. A summary of the program is provided and a guide to the location of publications on the project is included.

A high-capacity vapor-modulated heat pipe was designed and tested. In 1977, a program was undertaken to use the aforementioned heat pipe to study protection from freezing-point failure, increase control sensitivity, and transient behavior under a wide range of operating conditions in order to determine the full performance potential of the heat pipe. A new concept, based on the vapor-induced-dry-out principle, was developed for passive feedback temperature control as a heat pipe diode. This report documents this work and describes: (1) the experimental and theoretical investigation of the performance of the vapor-modulated heat pipe; and (2) the design, fabrication and test of the heat pipe diode.

Techniques have been developed for controlling the temperature and enhancing the performance of metallized, ultrathin polymer film used as the sail material for the proposed Halley's Comet rendezvous solar sail vehicle. The coating technology development is described whereby film emissivity is increased sufficiently on one side to a point where the sail, in its cranking orbit, could go to a heliocentric distance of 0.25 AU and still operate within the temperature limits of the basic film material. This capability resulted in significant improvement in several mission performance parameters; e.g., a lengthened launch period through increased vehicle performance and more latitude in the selection of basic film candidates.

Dryout induced by vapor throttling makes control of equipment temperature less dependent on variations in sink environment. Mechanism controls flow of vapor in heat pipe by using valve in return path to build difference in pressure and also difference in saturation temperature of the vapor. In steady state, valve closes just enough to produce partial dryout that achieves required temperature drop.

A mathematical model is developed of excess liquid in heat pipes that is used to calculate the parameters governing the axial flow of liquid in fillets and puddles that form in vapor spaces. In an acceleration field, the hydrostatic pressure variation is taken into account, which results in noncircular meniscus shapes. The two specific vapor-space geometries considered are circular and the 'Dee-shape' that is formed by a slab wick in a circular tube. Also presented are theoretical and experimental results for the conditions under which liquid slugs form at the ends of the vapor spaces. These results also apply to the priming of arteries.

The work focuses on the mathematical modeling of three critical mechanisms of heat-pipe operation: (1) the effect that excess liquid has on heat-pipe performance; (2) the calculation of the dryout limit of circumferential grooves; (3) an efficient mathematical model for the calculation of the viscous-inertial interaction in the vapor flow. These mathematical models are incorporated in the computer program GRADE II, which is described.

This user's manual describes the revised version of the computer program GRADE(1), which designs and analyzes heat pipes with graded porosity fibrous slab wicks. The revisions are: (1) automatic calculation of the minimum condenser-end stress that will not result in an excess-liquid puddle or a liquid slug in the vapor space; (2) numerical solution of the equations describing flow in the circumferential grooves to assess the burnout criterion; (3) calculation of the contribution of excess liquid in fillets and puddles to the heat-transport; (4) calculation of the effect of partial saturation on the wick performance; and (5) calculation of the effect of vapor flow, which includes viscousinertial interactions.

Research and development programs in variable conductance heat pipe technology were conducted. The treatment has been comprehensive, involving theoretical and/or experimental studies in hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, heat transfer into and out of the pipe, fluid selection, and materials compatibility, in addition to the principal subject of variable conductance control techniques. Efforts were not limited to analytical work and laboratory experimentation, but extended to the development, fabrication and test of spacecraft hardware, culminating in the successful flight of the Ames Heat Pipe Experiment on the OAO-C spacecraft.

A digital computer program for design and analysis of heat pipes which contain non-condensible gases, either for temperature control or to aid in start-up from the frozen state, is presented. Some of the calculations which are possible with the program are: (1) wall temperature profile along a gas-loaded heat pipe, (2) amount of gas loading necessary to obtain desired evaporator temperature at a desired heat load, (3) heat load versus evaporator temperature for a fixed amount of gas in the pipe, and (4) heat and mass transfer along the pipe, including the vapor-gas front region.

Heat pipe technology pertinent to the design and application of self-controlled, variable conductance heat pipes for spacecraft thermal control is discussed. Investigations were conducted to: (1) provide additional confidence in existing design tools, (2) to generate new design tools, and (3) to develop superior variable conductance heat pipe designs. A computer program for designing and predicting the performance of the heat pipe systems was developed.

Experimental diffusion freezeout rates in a gas loaded heat pipe are presented and compared with predictions of an analysis and computer program published earlier. The experimental approach was to pivot a heat pipe on knife edges and use an analytical mass balance to measure the rate of mass migration within the pipe. Diffusion freezeout rates in a water heat pipe were measured as a function of the condenser sink temperature and the condenser-to-sink thermal conductance. Measured rates varied between 19 and 270 mg/hr and yielded 64 to 99 percent agreement with predicted values. These results indicated that the analysis and computer program for predicting the behavior of gas loaded heat pipes are useful tools for designing such systems.
