This integrated thesis investigates the effect of test preparation in educational contexts as well as students' usage of strategies when they prepare for tests. One meta-analysis and four (quasi-) experimental studies were included in the thesis, constituting three research papers. In addition to the main findings reported in the three papers, some cross-experimental analyses were added to further contribute to the overall interpretation of research findings. The meta-analysis of test preparation effects on large-scale educational tests suggested that students' test performance can be significantly improved by test preparation. The breadth of test preparation intervention, workbooks, training test-taking skills and test preparation management strategies were found to be significant moderators of test preparation effect. However, the meta-analysis found little evidence to support the notion that testing (i.e., the use of sample items and practice tests) has a superior impact on test performance over other practices (i.e., lecture or restudy), contrary to the solid testing effect reported in the literature. The effects of testing and restudy strategies for test preparation were further explored across four (quasi-) experiments, which were conducted in an educational psychology course in a teacher training college in China. The first three (quasi-) experiments manipulated three variables: test preparation strategies, the stakes of the test preparation setting, and metacognitive training and practices. How these variables affected students' performance on post-tests and delayed course tests were investigated. Under high-stakes settings, testing with feedback had significant effects on both post-tests and delayed course tests compared with the control group while restudy only outperformed the control on post-tests. Embedding metacognitive training and monitoring and control tasks during test preparation did not significantly boost the effects. The fourth quasi-experiment simulated a more realistic test preparation condition where students could choose either testing or restudy to study the materials multiple times. Students tended to use one-time testing more often, and they were reluctant to restudy a topic repeatedly. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses suggested that students' strategy uses were predicted by their confidence and the question type. Chinese students in this research could recognise both the direct and indirect effects of testing practice, which seems to be culturally distinctive. However, additional analyses revealed that students' blended use of the two strategies failed to enlarge the test preparation effect. Across the four experiments, students with lower prior attainment seem to benefit more from the test preparation interventions.

Between the ages of four- to six-years-old, children show remarkable improvements in executive functioning (EF). This thesis aimed to determine which factors contribute to the neurocognitive development of two types of EF, namely, visual working memory (VWM) and inhibitory control (IC). Home-based longitudinal assessments of behaviour, brain function (using functional near-infrared spectroscopy - fNIRS), and academic success were collected across two consecutive years. Chapters 2 and 4 examined which key factors contribute to individual differences in pre-schoolers' VWM and IC and their neural correlates. Children were categorised into high-performing (HP) and low-performing (LP) groups based on their performance. Chapter 2 found that LPs compared to HPs, increasingly activated the left frontal and bilateral parietal cortices when their VWM capacity was challenged. Further, activation in the left parietal cortex partially mediated the association between parent-reported stressful life events and VWM performance. Chapter 4 found that LPs increasingly activated the bilateral frontal and parietal cortices when their inhibitory processes were strained. Chapters 3 and 5 examined the longitudinal development of VWM and IC and their neural correlates, and how the developmental trajectories of these functions differ by the schooling experience. Further, the extent to which schooling-related changes in EF could predict academic outcomes over time was investigated. Chapter 3 found that children who attended one year of schooling (P1) improved more in VWM than children who stayed in kindergarten (KG). Additionally, P1 children who began the year with greater VWM skills gained more in vocabulary across the school year. Chapter 5 found that P1 children, compared to KG children, showed a greater change over time in activation related to more efficient response monitoring in the bilateral frontal cortex. Further, the change in the left frontal activation difference showed a positive trend with mathematical ability. The novel research presented in this thesis broadens our understanding of individual differences in EF and underlying brain function. Further, these findings reveal how the schooling environment shapes the neurocognitive development of EF which has important implications for academic success.

- Abstract
This open access book presents the conceptual and operational foundations of the IEA International Computer and Information Literacy Study (2023), which is designed to assess how well students are prepared for study, work, and life in a digital world. The study measures international differences in students'computer and information literacy (CIL): their ability to use computers to investigate, create, participate and communicate at home, at school, in the workplace and in the community. Participating countries also have an option for their students to complete an assessment of computational thinking (CT). The ICILS assessment framework articulates the basic structure of the study. It provides a description of the field and the constructs to be measured. It outlines the design and content of the measurement instruments, sets down the rationale for those designs, and describes how measures generated by those instruments relate to the constructs. In addition, it hypothesizes relations between constructs so as to provide the foundation for some of the analyses that follow.

- Abstract
This open access book investigates the ways in which young people around the world are prepared to undertake their roles as citizens. It presents the international results from the third cycle of the study IEA's International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS 2022). Based on data from 24 countries or benchmarking participants from Europe, Latin America, and Asia, ICCS 2022 studies contexts for and learning outcomes of civic and citizenship education in a wide range of national contexts at the beginning of the third decade of the 21st Century. It responds to both enduring and emerging challenges of educating young people in a world where contexts of democracy and civic participation continue to change. The study addresses issues related to young people's engagement through digital technologies, migration and diversity, perceptions of the political system, global citizenship, and education for sustainable development. Further, it contains data that reflects civic-related aspects of recent developments such as students'perceptions of restrictions in response to national emergencies and their trust in scientists. Over the past 50 years, the IEA has conducted comparative research studies in a range of domains focusing on educational policies, practices, and outcomes in many countries around the world. Prior to ICCS 2022, the IEA had conducted four international comparative studies of civic and citizenship education, with a first survey implemented in 1971, a second in 1999, a third in 2009 and a fourth in 2016. ICCS 2022 data allows education systems to evaluate the strengths of educational policies, from a comparative perspective, and to measure progress in achieving critical social objectives of their educational policy agendas.

- Abstract
This book adopts as conceptual focus the technical mode of experience, exploring this characteristic mode of design as the angle from which the discipline of applied linguistics takes its cue. What makes applied linguistic concept formation possible? A number of elementary concepts and ideas are so basic to the discipline that they can neither be ignored nor avoided. These ‘primitives'are identified by examining the connections among the technical and other modalities, such as the spatial, the physical, the social, economic, aesthetic, juridical and the ethical. A theory of applied linguistics must be robust enough to do justice to different modernist and postmodernist paradigms operating in the discipline, systematically identifying and assessing their strengths and blind spots. The book offers a response to the question of the usefulness of theory. The principles of design revealed in the theoretical analysis are given shape in developing imaginative language interventions to solve vexing language problems not for the sake of theory, but for the benefit of those affected. The book is intended for use both as a reference and as a comprehensive, unifying perspective of what the field is, by scholars in applied linguistics and related fields (TESOL, ESL, ESP, EAP, SLA studies, language assessment and testing, language policy development), by postgraduate students or those who teach or study applied linguistics.

- Abstract
See beyond content standards to the broader context of life-changing skills. The standards-based learning and grading movement of the past twenty years has ushered in a critical shift in assessment that demands clarity in both what is being measured and how well students are learning. Seeing the value in this evolution, a wave of schools has invested enormous effort to institutionalize the policy and practices of the movement. In doing so, many focused their initial efforts squarely on grading and fell short of the more important work–classroom assessment. There are important lessons in these missteps and failures. This groundbreaking,'next generation'approach to classroom assessment challenges educators to reflect on the connections between growth, mastery, and student self-efficacy and to prioritize the transferable skills of metacognition and self-regulation in assessments. A powerful call-to-action, this guide includes: A conceptual framework that guides the questions and order of assessment reform An approach to assessment, grading, and reporting that prioritizes student growth over a standard definition of success for everyone Strategies to develop metacognition and catalyze motivation in students Orientation to each chapter with learning intentions with success criteria Vivid case stories and prompts to power deep reflection Underscoring the importance of learning environments that work for the full range of learning profiles, this book calls for a revolution in the narrative around assessment and grading, emphasizing the ultimate goal of nurturing students who are metacognitive, expert learners, motivated by the joy of learning.

COVID-19 and increased attention to how institutions of higher education (IHEs) serve an increasingly diverse student population have brought conversations about “standard” practices from the margins to the center as faculty explore how to improve learning and student success for all students. Historically, IHEs were built by a privileged class for a privileged class, a system, and structure built on specific epistemologies, practices, and habits of mind and language that replicate privilege and leave many students underserved in their academic pursuits. One way faculty have increased equity in their college classrooms is through the use of alternative assessment (alt-assessment) practices. This volume aims to share the experiences of faculty who have leveraged “non-traditional” grading paradigms for the sake of increasing student learning, a sense of belonging, and equity in their classrooms. Meant to orient faculty who are considering how to implement alt-assessment in their own classes as well as those who are already employing various grading frameworks, this volume will celebrate new and innovative approaches, share lessons learned, and invite a broader coalition of faculty into the stream of conversation about pedagogical innovation. Faculty, educators, and practitioners share their approaches to alternate assessment in this volume, as well as the critiques, lessons, and outcomes associated with their pedagogical decisions. Written by practitioners for practitioners, we hope the book will provide theoretical and practical guidance for alternative assessment practices such as ungrading, contract grading, standards-based grading, and labor-based grading across various disciplines and within different academic contexts.

- Abstract
Practical Statistics for Educators, Seventh Edition, is a clear and easy-to follow book written specifically for education students in introductory statistics and action research courses. It is also an invaluable resource and guidebook for educational practitioners who wish to study their own settings and for those involved in program evaluation. The book's focus is on essential concepts in educational statistics, understanding when to use various statistical tests, and learning how to interpret results. This book introduces education students and practitioners to the use of parametric and nonparametric statistics in education, and basic concepts in statistics are explained in clear language. Formulas and equations are used sparingly, and readers are not required to do any computations. The book also includes a discussion of testing, test score interpretation, reliability, and validity. A chapter on survey design and analysis provides readers with examples that demonstrate how the different statistical tests introduced in the book can be used to analyze survey data. An extensive study guide at the end of the book provides an opportunity to review all the information that was presented in the book; the guide includes an answer key with a clear explanation of each correct answer. Throughout this text, examples taken from the field of education serve to illustrate the various concepts, terms, statistical tests, and data interpretations.

- Abstract
This book aims to advance language program evaluation and practice, building on the author's previous work in Blended Language Program Evaluation (Palgrave Macmillan, 2016). The book is based in theory, yet incorporates case study examples throughout each chapter. The conceptual framework is grounded in complexity and evaluative thinking, and incorporates a three-tiered approach on themes ranging from'hybrid learning'through to'leadership'and'sustainability'. The style of the work seeks to engage stakeholders through its focus on utility and program improvement, and result in pragmatic, evidence-based results that foster quality teaching, learning, and administration. Despite being situated in a multibillion dollar global industry, few language professionals evaluate their language programs and foster improvement. This book is addressed to current language professionals and researchers, and aims to fill this gap in current knowledge and practice.

- Abstract
In addition to helping us make sense of a deeply complex issue, Race and Assessment in Higher Education: From Conceptualising Barriers to Making Measurable Change provides us with proven guidance for what works in addressing race-based inequities in higher education assessment and what we can do to promote greater racial inclusivity in this space. Mapping the experiences of 104 racially minoritised and white undergraduate students in UK universities, author Paul Campbell examines racial barriers in assessment and varying experiences of inclusion for students of colour to create a framework for addressing these barriers. Drawing on qualitative stories and quantitative data from over 175 students, Campbell explores the direct, positive impact of this framework for improving students'experiences of racial inequity and reducing the race award gap in degree outcomes. Offering the first direct, evidence-based response on the challenges faced by students of colour in higher education assessments in the UK, this pioneering monograph channels discussions on race and education to create an essential practical resource for enacting real change on an everyday student level.
