Schoolteachers and the Nordic Model examines the cultural distinctiveness of the Nordic teaching profession and teacher training compared to examples from Europe and North America.The book explores the concept of these ‘teacher cultures'as various dimensions of professional identities, recruitment patterns, teachers'social status, values and knowledge. It considers how Nordic teachers´ socio-cultural backgrounds and their shifting societal roles compare with continental European examples, analysing the societal consequences of teacher cultures for the current Nordic welfare states. Offering a unique focus on teachers, the book uses a shared comparative and historical approach to add new knowledge to the analysis of global convergence and divergence in educational systems. The book will be of great interest to researchers, scholars and post-graduate students in the fields of comparative education, educational policy, the sociology of education and the history of education. This book examines how the two educational systems of China and the Nordic countries intersect. Over the past decade, there has been increased growth and interaction between China and the Nordic countries due to both government encouragement and academic curiosity. This book rejects a simplistic approach that presents both spaces as culturally uniform, confronting ‘East'and ‘West'entities, and suggests a comparative and contrastive approach that is critical and reflexive in both theory and methodology. This does not solely concentrate on difference, but emphasises similarities, including studies on philosophical, conceptual and methodological issues. This nuanced edited collection will appeal to students and scholars of Nordic and Chinese education as well as globalisation and interculturality.

Under det danske formandskab for Nordisk Ministerråd blev der i 2015 sat fokus på udfordringer og gode praksiseksempler i relation til køn, uddannelse og befolkningsstrømme i yderområderne i hele Norden – Norge, Danmark, Sverige, Finland, Island og de selvstyrende lande Grønland, Færøerne samt Åland. Denne opsamlingsrapport sammenfatter de resultater samt konklusioner, som er afdækket i den eksisterende nordiske forskning og faglitteratur på området samt de erfaringer og faglige indspil, som er kommet frem undervejs i den fælles dialog og erfaringsudveksling.

This mapping presents a selected overview of existing research on gender, education and population flows in the Nordic peripheral areas. These areas are faced with a series of challenges that cannot be analyzed nor solved without taking a gender perspective into account. The challenges relate to, for instance, altered living conditions caused by global changes, stagnated or negative economic development, decrease in the amount of workplaces (particularly in the traditionally male-dominated professions) as well as, not least, migration and depopulation which is partly due to the fact that the young people of the area (especially the women) move to bigger cities to educate themselves. The challenges in question are not only significant in relation to the viability and cohesion of the areas, but also for the men and women who live there and their mutual social relations.

During the Danish Presidency for the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2015, attention was drawn towards challenges and best practice examples in relation to gender, education and population flows in peripheral areas throughout the Nordic countries - Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Iceland and the autonomous countries, Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Åland. The present report summarises the findings and conclusions which are covered in the existing Nordic research and literature within the field, as well as the experience and professional responses, which were presented during the course of the common dialogue and exchange of experience.

Denne kortlægning præsenterer en selekteret oversigt over eksisterende forskning og faglitteratur om køn, uddannelse og befolkningsstrømme i yderområderne i de nordiske lande. De nordiske lande står overfor en række udfordringer, som ikke bør/kan forstås, og ej heller løses, uden at medtænke et kønsperspektiv. Det drejer sig bl.a. om ændrede levevilkår som følge af globale forandringer, stagnerende eller negativ økonomisk udvikling, nedgang i antallet af arbejdspladser (især i de traditionelle mandefag) samt ikke mindst migration og affolkning, hvilket blandt skyldes, at områdernes unge (især kvinderne) flytter til de større byer for at tage en uddannelse. Der er tale om udfordringer, som ikke bare har stor betydning for områdernes levedygtighed og sammenhængskraft, men også for de mænd og kvinder, der bor her, og for deres indbyrdes sociale relationer.

De nordiska ländernas ekonomiska utbyte med omvärlden har ökat dramatiskt. I debatten har globaliseringens förespråkare sett internationellt utbyte som en förutsättning för fortsatt välstånd, medan kritikerna varnat för arbetslöshet och ojämlikhet. Utvecklingen av inkomstfluktuationer och -skillnader kan emellertid inte förklaras av globaliseringen. Internationell handel, kapitalrörlighet och migration har således inte lett till ökad osäkerhet och ojämlikhet så som befarats – alternativt så har länderna varit framgångsrika i försöken att möta globaliseringen. De nordiska länderna har alla sökt bemöta utmaningarna genom reformer av utbildnings- och aktiveringspolitiken. Medan reformerna av yrkesutbildningen och arbetsmarknadspolitiken generellt inte har motverkat risken för social exkludering har däremot expansionen av utbildningssystemen tenderat att minska inkomstskillnaderna i Norden.

Literacy Practices in Transition explores the connections between local, situated literacy practices and global processes of mobility in the geographical space of the Nordic countries, an example of contemporary mobile societies. The detailed empirical analyses show how these connections affect individuals, practices and policies; how the global and local meet in discourses and practices and how people need to (re)negotiate their way in the complex and messy spaces in which they move. The volume challenges current trends in the global standardization of language and literacy education. Instead, it promotes the idea of literacy as a multiple, multilingual, multimodal and constantly contestable and negotiable phenomenon, which calls for the development of language and literacy education that is sensitive to the needs and experiences of the individual actors.
