Purpose: This review article is the first comprehensive evaluation of the available literature surrounding the education of death and dying in pharmacy schools. The purpose of this review was to describe the available literature and methods utilized regarding the emotional preparation for patient death in pharmacy education., Procedures: Searches were performed in three pharmacy databases to identify articles that contained descriptions of activities related to death and dying education in pharmacy curriculums., Findings: Eleven journal articles were reviewed, detailing activities in pharmacy education including simulations, didactic sessions, and an innovative "death over dessert" model. Evaluation methods varied, with surveys being most common, followed by reflection. Didactic courses demonstrated increased empathy and knowledge, while simulations compared to case-based activities improved skills, knowledge, and comfort levels with providing end-of-life care. Simulations often involved interprofessional groups, with third-year pharmacy students most evaluated., Conclusion: Pharmacy students were mainly exposed to death and dying scenarios through didactic courses or simulations, with limited longitudinal exposure. Research suggests that students may lack preparation for handling death-related situations, leading to trauma and dysfunction. While existing studies focus on outward effects like empathy, internal factors such as coping methods receive less attention. Unlike nursing and medicine literature, pharmacy education lacks comprehensive coverage of coping and emotional support strategies for death and dying scenarios. Background and Purpose: To describe an active-learning laboratory on urinary incontinence (UI) and its effect on students' confidence and comfort in addressing UI., Educational Activity and Setting: Second year pharmacy students (n = 98) participated in an active-learning laboratory focused on UI with four components: catheter lecture and demonstration, UI product overview, hands-on practice with UI absorbent products, and a debrief on the activity focused on difficult conversations. Students completed an optional retrospective pre-post survey at the end of the laboratory including five confidence questions, ranking of activities in the laboratory, and open-ended responses on how to change the activity as well as what was one takeaway from the debrief. Descriptive statistics assessed survey responses. Changes in student confidence were assessed using paired t-tests. Thematic analysis was used for the open-ended debrief question., Findings: Of the 101 students who participated in the laboratory, 98 students completed the pre/post-survey (response rate: 97%). Students demonstrated a significant increase in their confidence in all five areas assessed. The hands-on activity with the absorbent products was rated as the most useful activity. The themes from the debrief on difficult conversations included: self-awareness, expanding viewpoints, cultural sensitivity, and professional duty. Introduction: Formative assessment assists learning, but how Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) students perceive repeated formative assessment is unclear., Methods and Materials: This study sought to determine perceptions of repeated formative assessment with timely feedback on student learning in third-year PharmD students. This mixed methods approach included four surveys and a qualitative interview. Five formative assessments were assigned to third-year PharmD students throughout a fall course, and then repeated in a spring course for the same cohort. Paired pre-and post-course surveys administered in both courses contained items corresponding to formative assessment perceptions. Survey items included domains of knowledge, engagement, feedback, and confidence, and effect size was determined using Cohen's d. Following the second course, students were invited to take part in a qualitative interview to further characterize perceptions., Results: Overall, 19 and 18 students participated in paired fall and spring pre- and post-surveys, respectively. The standardized mean difference for 12 out of 24 total survey items (58.3%) indicated small to medium positive effect sizes following the intervention, two out of 24 (8.3%) with medium to strong positive effect sizes, and one out of 24 (4.17%) with a strong positive effect size. Introduction: Pharmacists need more insight into patients' perspectives on medicine to target their counseling and improve patient outcomes. Patient simulation exercises, where pharmacy students are asked to consume medicine-like products, have been shown to foster such understandings, although the specifics of how this occurs, in particularly, how students turn their first-person perspectives toward generalizations about real patients' lives with medicines, are not well documented. The aim was to identify central aspects of the learning process by introducing reflection questions about real patients and follow students' development during a study period., Methods: The study was conducted with students in their 4th semester in the second year of Pharmacy Education at the University of Copenhagen who were asked to respond to free text questions in a survey instrument about their daily experiences of taking a licorice product for one week as well as answering patient reflection questions. Qualitative deductive analysis was performed by coding students' experiences according to concepts of 'experiential learning'. Pattern identification within each concept was then inferred, as were their interrelationships., Results: Patient reflection questions enabled students to turn their first-person perspectives toward relevant generalizations about real patients' lives with medicines, including involved psychological mechanisms and how real patient groups differ in their ability to take medicine regularly. Students who during the week faced challenges with following the required dosing scheme came to more nuanced realizations that medicine adherence requires special efforts and restricts one's daily life; hence, negative emotions were involved in the learning process., Conclusions: The design of the simple patient simulation exercise gave rise to new types of insights into real patients' lives with medicines. Background: Pharmacy students completing Internal Medicine rotations may be exposed to different stylistic approaches from providers on routine activities like patient rounds. This may be beneficial as students can learn in different ways. Conversely, extensive exposure to approaches that do not suit them may hinder student learning or lead students to feel they don't belong in a clinical setting., Educational Activity: This study sought to assess how students of different personality types perceived benefits to their learning based on the rounding styles of two providers. One provider (Dr. Bedside) used a team-based, bedside rounding method with direct patient interaction, while the other (Dr. Table) used a tableside team-based discussion for each patient. In the final week of a 5-week Internal Medicine APPE rotation, a cohort of ten students completed a 12-item survey that collected details on two personality assessments and assessed perspectives of the two rounding styles., Evaluation Findings: Ten students completed the personality assessments and survey. Students represented a diverse set of StrengthsFinder strengths and DOPE personality types, with the highest concentration (60%) of students receiving the Executing strength. Background: Initial education and training standards for pharmacists in Great Britain require early clinical exposure to patients using experiential work-based learning. However, there is poor evidence of this approach in some settings, such as paediatric care. The aim of this study was therefore to explore a novel model of experiential work-based learning for student pharmacists in a paediatric setting., Methods: Fourth-year student pharmacists enrolled on a Master of Pharmacy programme were allocated five three-hour placement sessions at a paediatric hospital. Sessions consisted of a briefing, ward activities, scaffolded consultations with children and their carers, followed by a debriefing session with a clinical supervisor. Data were collected relating to the ward, patient details, student reported activities, learning outcomes and if follow up was required by a member of the clinical team. Data were cleaned, quality checked, then descriptive statistical analysis and inductive content analysis were conducted., Main Findings: Seventy-four students took part in 28 individual sessions and 233 consultations were recorded. Consultations included a best-possible medical history (76%, n = 177), a satisfactory drug history (45%, n = 104), or discussed hospital discharge (11%, n = 26). Students were exposed to patients with diagnosed acute conditions (41%, n = 96) and chronic conditions (33%, n = 76), as well as children awaiting diagnosis (13%, n = 30). Students reported learning about the pathology, diagnosis and symptoms of paediatric conditions (48%, n = 81), medicines used in children (24%, n = 41), patient experiences of recieving care (15%, n = 25), carer experiences (2%, n = 3), the hospital environment (2%, n = 4), career progression (2%, n = 4), and experiences of social care (11%, n = 18). Findings were synthesised with existing entrustable professional activities from the literature to generate novel EPAs specific to paediatric settings., Conclusions: A paediatric setting offers a suitable environment to host experiential work-based learning in pharmacy education. Background and Purpose: Clinical decision-making (CDM) is crucial in pharmacy practice, necessitating effective teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate pharmacy education. This study aims to explore undergraduates and postgraduates' perceptions of how a new teaching model supports their CDM when addressing patient cases., Educational Activity and Setting: Implemented in a full-day CDM course for pharmacy students and a half-day course for pharmacists in the Netherlands, the model, accompanied by a learning guide, facilitated CDM in patient cases. Eight courses were conducted between September 2022 to June 2023, followed by an online survey measuring participants' agreement on how the model supported their CDM, using a 5-point Likert scale. Additionally, three open-ended questions were included to elicit learning outcomes and self-development opportunities., Findings: Of 175 invited participants, 159 (91%) completed the survey. Most agreed the teaching model supported their CDM, particularly in considering the patient's healthcare needs and context (96%), and exploring all available options (96%). Participants found the model provided a clear structure (97%), and fostered critical thinking (93%). The most frequently mentioned learning outcomes and self-development opportunities included collecting sufficient relevant information, maintaining a broad perspective, and decelerating the process to avoid premature closure., Summary: Participants agreed that the teaching model helped them to make clinical decisions. Objective: The purpose of this analysis was to identify, analyze, and report patterns (or themes) of planning and preparation considerations of students that scored less than the historic average score on the Pre-NAPLEX® exam., Methods: This qualitative study was a retrospective, inductive thematic analysis of de-identified semi-structured interview field notes collected from student interviews for those students that scored less than the historic average score on the Pre-NAPLEX® exam., Results: Ninety-one students were initially contacted based on their score on the Pre-NAPLEX® exam to participate in one-on-one virtual discussions (i.e., interviews) with faculty members. Fifty-two responded and participated with their responses analyzed and included in thematic categorization. Four major themes were identified during the analysis. These include 1) Organization and Messaging of NAPLEX® Preparation Efforts, 2) Time Management during Competing Obligations, 3) Test Taking Experience, and 4) Curricular Disconnect., Conclusion: Student performance on the NAPLEX licensing exam is of great concern to many colleges of pharmacy. As a result, many institutions are looking at root-causes for poor performance and working to implement structural changes at their institution to address these concerns. This investigation identified four major themes surrounding the preparation and planning for the Pre-NAPLEX® for students that scored less than the historic average score on the Pre-NAPLEX®. These include 1) Organization and Messaging of NAPLEX® Preparation Efforts, 2) Time Management during Competing Obligations, 3) Test Taking Experience, and 4) Curricular Disconnect. Performance assessments for student pharmacists are required by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education to monitor student knowledge, retention, and professional skill sets. Near the end of their Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs), fourth-year pharmacy students (P4s) at the University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy must pass a milestone exam (P4ME) to graduate. The P4ME contains four sections: adult medicine, ambulatory care, community, and hospital. If a student fails one or more sections of the initial multiple-choice P4ME, they must retake that specific section(s) on the makeup P4ME. If a student fails the makeup multiple-choice P4ME, they participate in a case based oral exam designed to determine whether they meet minimal competencies to pass the P4ME. This report outlines the process undertaken by the faculty to develop a high-stakes P4 milestone oral exam. While only a few students have participated in the process, outcomes differentiated P4s eligible for graduation versus those who needed to repeat an APPE. Lessons learned about the oral exam process include minimizing the number of faculty in attendance, shortening the exam duration, and standardizing the exam process. Positive aspects include remediation led by a subject matter expert and implementation of a unique rubric to assess student performance. Background: ChatGPT, a recently developed artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, has demonstrated improved performance in examinations in the medical field. However, thus far, an overall evaluation of the potential of ChatGPT models (ChatGPT-3.5 and GPT-4) in a variety of national health licensing examinations is lacking. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive assessment of the ChatGPT models' performance in national licensing examinations for medical, pharmacy, dentistry, and nursing research through a meta-analysis., Methods: Following the PRISMA protocol, full-text articles from MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE, ERIC, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and key journals were reviewed from the time of ChatGPT's introduction to February 27, 2024. Studies were eligible if they evaluated the performance of a ChatGPT model (ChatGPT-3.5 or GPT-4); related to national licensing examinations in the fields of medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, or nursing; involved multiple-choice questions; and provided data that enabled the calculation of effect size. Two reviewers independently completed data extraction, coding, and quality assessment. The JBI Critical Appraisal Tools were used to assess the quality of the selected articles. Overall effect size and 95% confidence intervals [CIs] were calculated using a random-effects model., Results: A total of 23 studies were considered for this review, which evaluated the accuracy of four types of national licensing examinations. The selected articles were in the fields of medicine (n = 17), pharmacy (n = 3), nursing (n = 2), and dentistry (n = 1). They reported varying accuracy levels, ranging from 36 to 77% for ChatGPT-3.5 and 64.4-100% for GPT-4. The overall effect size for the percentage of accuracy was 70.1% (95% CI, 65-74.8%), which was statistically significant (p < 0.001). Subgroup analyses revealed that GPT-4 demonstrated significantly higher accuracy in providing correct responses than its earlier version, ChatGPT-3.5. Additionally, in the context of health licensing examinations, the ChatGPT models exhibited greater proficiency in the following order: pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, and nursing. However, the lack of a broader set of questions, including open-ended and scenario-based questions, and significant heterogeneity were limitations of this meta-analysis., Conclusions: This study sheds light on the accuracy of ChatGPT models in four national health licensing examinations across various countries and provides a practical basis and theoretical support for future research. The overwhelming majority of states require pharmacists to pass the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Exam (MPJE) prior to licensure, and student performance in the pharmacy law course is the biggest predictor of success on the MPJE. However, wide variation exists regarding the structure and delivery of the pharmacy law course. Evidence-based learning strategies are well described in the literature, including: (1) practice testing, (2) distributed practice, (3) interleaved practice, (4) self-explanation, and (5) interrogative elaboration, and an opportunity may exist to implement them into the pharmacy law course. We translated these five evidence-based learning principles into practice for pharmacy law educators with specific examples. Background and Purpose: Specifications grading is a mastery-based grading approach to unlock student potential and empower students to focus on learning goals while receiving and acting on meaningful feedback. Within specifications grading, bundles are created to group assignments and assessments. Based on student achievement within each bundle, overall course grade is determined. This article describes the development and implementation of a specifications grading schema in a required skills-based course series, along with lessons learned., Educational Activity and Setting: In a longitudinal course series with both a didactic and lab component, specifications grading was utilized for determination of the overall course grade. Key components of the specifications grading schema were defined by assignment bundles. Assignment bundles aligned with knowledge and skills taught and assessed in each course and also included summative capstone assessments. Each bundle was assigned a numeric grade linked to a letter grade which determined the students' final grade in the course., Findings: Following first course offerings, several changes to the specifications grading schema were made to improve tracking of assignments and activities, to improve consistency across courses, and to aid in final course grade determination. All quizzes were changed to optional, formative quizzes to encourage student accountability. Objective: Competencies related to diversity could be essential to training and assessing student pharmacists in their readiness to provide equitable and inclusive care. Such competencies are lacking in pharmacy education; therefore, this study aimed to explore the development of diversity competencies and supporting factors needed to prepare students to meet the competencies and provide patient care in a diverse, equitable, and inclusive manner., Methods: Pharmacy diversity thought leaders were invited to participate in a 3-round modified Delphi survey. Survey items were created using a Backward Design. Qualitative data were analyzed using the Constant Comparative Method. Draft competency statements were created based on the collective comments from Round 1 along with themes related to the supporting factors needed to achieve the competencies. Consensus on themes, competency statements, and edits were identified in Round 2. Additional comments and feedback on edits were gathered in Round 3. Consensus was preset at 85.7%., Results: Seven competency statements were created. Knowledge, skills, attitudes, behaviors, values, curricular content/pedagogy, and resources needed to prepare students to meet the competencies and support faculty would need were identified., Conclusion: Preliminary diversity competencies and supporting factors needed were developed using the perspective of thought leaders. Background: Training in palliative and end-of-life (EOL) care provision represents a critical topic in health professional curricula for ensuring a workforce prepared to provide safe and person-center care at the end of one's life. This manuscript describes the incorporation of a simulation-based learning experience (SBLE) and the evolution of a professional elective course for student pharmacists related to palliative and EOL care., Educational Activity: A SBLE was incorporated into a long-standing professional pharmacy elective course in palliative and EOL care. The decision to incorporate and utilize SBLE to introduce topics of deprescribing, communication, prioritization of quality of life, and establishing goals of care was utilized in recognition of a need to establish a psychologically safer environment to allow students to explore these topics prior to the advanced pharmacy practice experiences., Discussion: Incorporation of SBLE in this professional elective course resulted in a favorable effect on course enrollment. Observations from structured debriefing and anecdotal student feedback suggest that students had trouble tailoring care plans to the circumstances, particularly in focusing on de-escalating medication treatments, emphasizing the need for training in the care for this patient population which incorporate considerations for goals of care. Lessons related to the influence of environmental distractions, expressions of discomfort conveyed by body language, and challenges in prioritizing and focusing on tailoring care plans given evolving information at hand were identified., Implications: We describe the effective implementation and utilization of SBLE in a professional elective focused on palliative and EOL care for student pharmacists. Future directions include research initiatives designed to evaluate the impact of simulation on key competencies and areas developed through participation in such exercises. Introduction: Primary healthcare workers, including doctors and pharmacists, are well-positioned to detect and support women experiencing mental health disorders in the perinatal period. However, research exploring their education and training to fulfil these roles is limited. This study aimed to examine the perspectives of medical and pharmacy educational program representatives on perinatal mental health education in medical and pharmacy curricula at Australian and New Zealand universities., Methods: A web-based search (e.g., Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) was used to identify potentially relevant medical and pharmacy educational program representatives. Eligible participants were invited to participate in audio-recorded semi-structured interviews which were transcribed verbatim. Data regarding perinatal mental health content within each program were extracted and tabulated for comparisons. Thematic analysis of participants' perspectives on perinatal mental health education was conducted., Results: Fifty medical and pharmacy educational program representatives were invited to participate (December 2022-March 2023), of which 13 participated representing 14 programs. The extent and content of perinatal mental health education varied considerably across programs. Background and Purpose: Near-peer teaching is an innovative approach to teaching the skills of supervising and precepting while benefiting students with different levels of experience and academic training. This study describes near-peer activities in skills-based laboratory courses that provided opportunities for one-on-one teaching to benefit learners in the introductory lab courses while simultaneously training more advanced students for future supervisory and precepting roles., Educational Activity & Setting: Three community pharmacy near-peer teaching simulations were designed and implemented: 1) Patient Counseling and Medication Adherence, 2) Dispensing and Patient Counseling, and 3) Drug Utilization Review and Prescriber Calls. These activities took place over two semesters of a pharmacy skills lab with all first- and third-year Doctor of Pharmacy students., Findings: In Autumn 2019, 80% (111/139) of P1s and 67% (80/119) of P3s responded to the course evaluation survey. In Spring 2020, 73% (100/137) of P1s and 68% (80/118) of P3s responded to the course evaluation survey. The P3s reported increased confidence in their ability to provide meaningful feedback, while P1s reported increased confidence in communicating with patients and healthcare providers. Performance data revealed that most P1s and P3s completed dispensing and communication activities accurately using a near-peer approach. Overall, the P1s and P3s felt the activities were valuable learning experiences., Summary: The near-peer activities described in this study fill a gap in the training of pharmacy graduates for future precepting and supervisory roles. Purpose: This wisdom of experience commentary, written by three pharmacy educators of various backgrounds - PharmD, PhD, and EdD - will discuss potential contributors to the lack of professional advocacy exhibited by pharmacists. Authors will describe the issue using a "What? So What? Now What?" reflective model., Description: Students enrolled in 14 cohorts at two US colleges of pharmacy possess similar CliftonStrengths® top 5 themes with four themes most commonly reappearing in the top 5: Achiever, Learner, Harmony, and Restorative. These themes are housed in three of the four CliftonStrengths® domains: Executing, Relationship Building, and Strategic Thinking. Themes in the fourth domain, Influencing, were not represented in the top 5. Background and Purpose: Pharmacy robberies are a common occurrence. From 2010 to 2019, there were over 7500 prescription drug-related armed robbery incidents in the United States. A lecture on pharmacy robbery was added to the pharmacy curriculum in 2017 at Butler University. The primary objective of this study was to assess whether the pharmacy robbery lecture given during the first year of the pharmacy program is adequate, with a secondary objective comparing the results of this survey to one conducted prior to the curricular addition. This information provides an opportunity for schools of pharmacy to consider adding or enhancing drug diversion content into their curriculum., Educational Activity and Setting: A cross-sectional survey of all students enrolled in each professional year of the Doctor of Pharmacy program was conducted spring 2022 to collect information on pharmacy students' knowledge and experience regarding community pharmacy robberies and their perceptions of the pharmacy robbery education in the curriculum., Findings: A total of 285 of 407 students responded for a 70% response rate. More than half (53.5%) feel the pharmacy robbery education received is adequate and 63.9% feel prepared to properly manage a pharmacy robbery situation. The survey asked two pharmacy robbery knowledge-based questions and most students selected the correct response to both (89.9% and 97.8%). More than one-fourth (27.1%) of the respondents reported that the pharmacy they work/worked at had been robbed. Diagnosis education is explicitly included in the Draft Accreditation Standards 2025 and should be wholeheartedly supported. To address the staggering number of diagnostic errors in the US, the National Academy of Medicine advocates for diagnosis education for all health professions. Misperceptions of pharmacists' involvement in diagnosis are exacerbated by use of implicit language and euphemisms, and it's long overdue that we provide clarity. Pharmacists are engaged in diagnosis and diagnostic reasoning in everyday practice whether realized or not. Diagnosis education is implicitly included in US pharmacy curricula in the Pharmacists' Patient Care Process, and it is time to give students the language to engage in it responsibly to be practice-ready in all states. Introduction: Medicinal chemistry instruction in PharmD programs at Canadian universities is considered an important foundational science. However, with few guidelines for the required content most programs have observed a decrease in hours of medicinal chemistry instruction. A Medicinal Chemistry Special Interest Group (SIG) was formed to address these issues nationally and initiated a pan-Canadian environmental scan to better understand the depth and breadth of medicinal chemistry instruction., Methods: The SIG carried out an environmental scan to identify medicinal chemistry content, delivery and assessments in PharmD programs in Canada., Results: Core medicinal chemistry concepts across the PharmD programs are in general agreement with those listed by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education. Medicinal chemistry was typically taught as didactic lectures either as a standalone course or within a pharmacology course, although one program integrated some medicinal chemistry within therapeutics focused problem-based learning. There was no consistent time in program where medicinal chemistry occurred., Conclusions: The SIG found that similar medicinal chemistry content is taught across all Canadian PharmD programs, but incorporation of medicinal chemistry in therapeutics courses was minimal. Core concepts within six high-level overarching themes that guide our collective instruction were identified. The core concepts require developing high-level cognitive processes such as knowledge application and synthesis that practicing pharmacists are expected to possess for entry to practice. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the validity of an integrated objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) station assessing both oral and written components with that of an OSCE station assessing 1 single skill (oral only), both targeted at assessing taking a best possible medication history., Methods: A convergent mixed-methods design that used the 4 inferences of Kane's validity framework (scoring, generalization, extrapolation, and implications) as a scaffold to integrate qualitative data (post-OSCE reflections) and quantitative data (assessment grades and categories of medication errors) was applied., Results: In 2022, 216 students completed the OSCE station with the oral component alone, while in 2023, 254 students completed the integrated (oral and written) OSCE station. Students in 2023 performed significantly better, with a median score of 88% vs 80% in 2022. There was a greater proportion of commission errors in the integrated assessment (20.4% vs 15.3%), but fewer omission errors (29.9% vs 31.8%) and patient profile errors (5.1% vs 69.4%). Student reflections revealed that conversations were rushed in the integrated assessment, with a greater focus on written formatting, but an appreciation for the authenticity and structured format of the integrated OSCE compared with the single-skill OSCE alone., Conclusion: Students completing the integrated OSCE (with oral and written components) had fewer patient profile and medication omission errors than students who completed the oral-only OSCE. Introduction: The purpose of this study was to conduct a general educational needs assessment to identify deficiencies in current Army pharmacy education while projecting future educational requirements based on changes in pharmacy practice and evolving demands of military medicine., Materials and Methods: Twelve pharmacists participated in a facilitated discussion using the nominal group technique. Data were analyzed using quantitative and qualitative methods to establish consensus. Member checking was used to verify and validate the findings., Results: Participants generated 190 knowledge, skill, and ability (KSA) statements over 3 sessions. Twenty-one statements achieved consensus. Four consensus statements were skills, 7 were knowledge, and 10 were abilities. KSAs were categorized into pharmaceutical care, military, logistics, or legal domain based on a thematic analysis., Conclusions: With modernized, relevant KSAs, the Army can measure and train a ready pharmacy force. Background and Purpose: Individualized assessment of students in skills-based courses is essential for practice readiness, however recruiting evaluators is challenging. Our school of pharmacy offers a teaching certificate program for postgraduate year one pharmacy residents (PGY1 residents; PGY1s) which requires completion of a teaching experience. The longitudinal layered learning assessment experience (LLLAE) was designed to meet instructional needs for individualized assessment of first-year pharmacy students' communication skills and provide a meaningful teaching opportunity for PGY1s. This manuscript describes the implementation and evaluates the impact of the LLLAE., Educational Activity and Setting: PGY1s were invited to participate in the yearlong LLLAE. Faculty developed PGY1s' skills through training sessions, direct observation, and debrief sessions. PGY1s evaluated students and provided feedback using pre-defined criteria during 3 summative assessments (capstones). Capstones were common pharmacy practice scenarios in which students interact with an actor serving as a standardized patient or provider. PGY1s completed an end-of-year survey to self-rate their improvement in evaluating students, providing feedback, and confidence., Findings: Twenty-two PGY1s participated in the LLLAE over 2 years. They evaluated 73.2% of total capstone interactions. The end-of-year survey was completed by 20 PGY1s (90.9% response rate). All respondents indicated improvement in their skills to evaluate students, ability to provide feedback, and confidence. Scores were 4 or 5 (scale of 1 to 5) across all measures. Key contributors fostering improvement were the training and debrief sessions, faculty feedback, pre-defined criteria, and multiple practice opportunities., Summary: This novel layered learning approach was a win-win for faculty and PGY1s. The approach improved feasibility for faculty to continue individualized student assessment while mentoring early career pharmacists. Problem Description: Without externally validated tools to assess teaching and learning curriculum (TLC) programs, our program has undertaken continuous quality improvement (CQI) methods to make revisions in response to resident, programmatic, and accreditation demands., Quality Improvement Methods: Key stakeholders, including the college of pharmacy, the residents, and the executive committee, were engaged in discussion and feedback was solicited., Results of Cqi Inquiry: The demands identified prompted revision of the TLC teaching component, programming, and timeline. Major changes have included adding an application for the teaching track, limiting teaching track participation, altering the seminar format (to a mix of in person, virtual, and asynchronous), and starting the program earlier in the calendar year. Key stakeholders supported the proposed revisions., Interpretation and Discussion: The CQI method summarized here worked well for the TLC. Although simplistic in nature, it met the needs of the TLC and engaged several stakeholders. No major challenges were encountered during the process and stakeholders were amenable to the process and proposed revisions. Given the lack of externally validated tools for assessing TLC programs, any TLC program could perform a similar CQI method to assist with revisions., Conclusion: Continuous quality improvement of the TLC to address resident, programmatic, and accreditation demands has been vital to optimize and sustain the program. Background: Our objective was to create an intentional Interprofessional Education Experience (IEE) that satisfied the requirements set forth by the Center for the Advancement of Pharmacy Education (CAPE 2013), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) Standard 11, and the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) Competencies. These frameworks elevate the importance of interprofessional education in pharmacy. They not only guide educational standards but also emphasize the crucial role of collaborative healthcare practices in ensuring comprehensive patient care and improving health outcomes. Our evaluation of PharmD students' attainment of Interprofessional Education (IPE) learning outcomes employed both quantitative and qualitative assessment methods to provide a comprehensive understanding of their achievements., Interprofessional Education Activity: Fourteen PharmD students participated in an intentional IEE experience in a community dental clinic, collaborating with the dental clinic team and patients. Assessment methods combined quantitative data from SPICE-R2 with qualitative insights from daily reflections and an IPE Field Encounter based on IPEC Competencies. This approach ensured a thorough evaluation across individual experiences., Discussion: Quantitative analysis revealed a statistically increase in mean scores for four out of ten questions on the SPICE-R2 instrument. Introduction: Self-awareness of strengths and weaknesses through self-reflection are important for life-long learning and development. The aim of this study was to assess the alignment in third-year undergraduate pharmacy students' self-reflections of their objective structured clinical exam (OSCE) performance to their actual OSCE scores and explore the most common aspects students reflected on as markers of perceived performance., Methods: Students completed a three-station OSCE and a written self-reflection about their performance. These reflections were coded using a latent pattern content analysis, with categories defined as "doing well (≥ 50% on exam)" and "not doing well (< 50% on exam)" and compared to their actual OSCE exam scores, to determine the degree of alignment., Results: Two hundred sixty-nine students completed the OSCE and reflection. Students had a low degree of alignment between their self-reflections and actual OSCE performance. Low alignment was overwhelmingly prevalent and significant in high-achieving students with OSCE scores of ≥90%. Most common aspects students reflected on as indicators of performance were finishing on time and communicating effectively. High-achieving students reflected on aspects such as empathy, systematic questioning, and patient teach-back as aspects of their performance., Conclusions: Student reflections on exam performance do not align with their actual performance, particularly amongst the high-achieving students. High-achieving students were more aware of the different aspects that affected their performance. Objective: To characterize which instruments have been developed to assess professionalism in the field of pharmacy., Findings: A scoping review was conducted to answer which instruments have been developed to assess professionalism in the field of Pharmacy. The databases consulted were EMBASE, ERIC, PUBMED/Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science. No restrictions on language or year of publication were made. Only studies about development or translation of instruments for professionalism assessment were included. The methodological quality of studies was verified by the Questionnaire Cross-Cultural Adaptation Guideline and the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments. Seven studies met the eligibility criteria and were included in this scoping review. In general, the instruments were developed from ideological elements assigned to professionalism by pharmaceutical and medical entities, in addition to theoretical references that came from social sciences. The 2023-2024 Academic Affairs Committee was charged to create a sense of urgency around the concept of Competency-Based Pharmacy Education and develop a "readiness for change" instrument that is based on the 5 essential elements that make up the definition of Competency-Based Pharmacy Education. This report describes the process undertaken by the committee to determine the societal needs of pharmacists and current state of pharmacy practice and pharmacy education. The practice gaps in pharmacy education and the key drivers needed to close these gaps are evaluated. Introduction: Due to the significance of interpersonal empathy and emotional intelligence in pharmaceutical practices, it has become essential to emphasize its importance in pharmacy education. The aim of this study is to provide pharmacy students, who require proper communication skills throughout their professional careers, with a simulation-based intervention focusing on empathy and emotional intelligence, and to evaluate the influence of this educational intervention on emotional intelligence and empathy levels., Methods: The methodological approach adopted in this study aims to integrate both qualitative and quantitative data for a comprehensive analysis, that is, the mixed method, and to provide in-depth answers to the research questions., Results: There was a difference observed in the change in empathy and emotional intelligence scores between the control and intervention groups. When the pre-test and mid-test results with the intervention group were analyzed, there was a difference in the values for emotional intelligence when only education was offered. Conversely, no difference was found in empathy scores under the same conditions. In the intervention group, after the implementation of both training and simulation practice resulted in a difference in the scores for emotional intelligence and empathy when comparing the results before and after the test. Gender and the interaction between gender and group had small effect sizes on both empathy and emotional intelligence. The comprehensive data collected from these interviews enabled a rigorous thematic analysis, culminating in the identification of three primary themes accompanied by respective categories: the contribution of theoretical education to simulation, perceptions of simulation practice, the significance of debriefing sessions. Objective: To determine the impact of item-writing flaws and cognitive level on student performance metrics in 1 course series across 2 semesters at a single institution., Methods: Four investigators reviewed 928 multiple-choice items from an integrated therapeutics course series. Differences in performance metrics were examined between flawed and standard items, flawed stems and flawed answer choices, and cognitive levels., Results: Reviewers found that 80% of the items were flawed, with the most common types being implausible distractors and unfocused stems. Flawed items were generally easier than standard ones, but the type of flaw significantly impacted the difficulty. Items with flawed stems had the same difficulty as standard items; however, those with flawed answer choices were significantly easier. Most items tested lower-level skills and have more flaws than higher-level items. There was no significant difference in difficulty between lower- and higher-level cognitive items, and higher-level items were more likely to have answer flaws than item flaws., Conclusion: Item-writing flaws differently impact student performance. Implausible distractors artificially lower the difficulty of questions, even those designed to assess higher-level skills. This effect contributes to a lack of significant difference in difficulty between higher- and lower-level items. Introduction: The pharmacy profession faces a lack of evidence pertaining to pharmaceutical care in oncology, both in terms of its effectiveness and its integration into clinical practice. While Europe-based pharmacists are active in many therapeutic areas, their role in cancer care is less defined. Conversely, the complexity of oncology, increasing cancer cases, and evolving therapies highlight the potential for pharmacists in this field. Their limited involvement in Europe may be attributed to inadequate undergraduate training and research., Perspective: Collaborative care shows potential in oncology, but still needs more trial evidence. Here, we can learn from pharmaceutical care in cardiology, where more research has been conducted. The limited role of pharmacists in oncology may be due to a lack of focus on oncology research and insufficient education., Implications: Addressing the teaching gap requires improving oncology education in pharmacy programs, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Current postgraduate courses and US PharmD programs could serve as models. Background and Purpose: Transitioning from the didactic to experiential setting is challenging for student pharmacists, perhaps due to lack of experiences providing "real-time" clinician interaction. We describe findings from a semester-long infectious diseases (ID) didactic elective that utilized a national cohort of preceptors and faculty across the United States to mimic clinician interaction and "real-time" ID management of various disease states. The mechanics of this elective provide a framework for others to implement to enhance advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) readiness., Education Activity and Setting: Students enrolled in an ID elective course at a school of pharmacy participated in "real-time" acute care scenarios. They assisted in multidisciplinary management of a patient's infection, mimicking "rounds" on an APPE, via interaction with external pharmacist volunteers (playing the roles of other healthcare personnel). Additionally, students formally presented and discussed their cases within the class, further promoting learning while optimizing presentation skills. Pharmacist volunteers were surveyed to assess student performances as measured by four entrustable professional activities (EPAs)., Findings: A total of 48 volunteer opportunities occurred during two course offerings. Results from 43 surveys were analyzed (90% response rate). Of those responses, 22/24 (92%) played the role of attending physician, and 19/24 (79%) played the role of technician. Volunteers agreed that students met the four EPAs evaluated (agreement was 85-100%)., Summary: This semester-long elective provided "real-time" experience and feedback for pre-APPE students to enhance APPE readiness and reinforce EPAs. Introduction: The objective of the study was to assess if improvement of the learner experience could be achieved through the use of instructional design strategies in current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) training. This is a novel application in a topic that is known to be boring but is critical to ensuring patient safety., Methods: An experimental randomized controlled repeated measures cross-over design was utilized in a sample of pharmacy students to determine the effect of an intervention training strategy (which utilized a mix of strategies including weeding, signaling, use of multimedia, and optimized space and type) on the learner experience (Evaluation, Overall Satisfaction, Perceived Knowledge, and Future Recommendation) compared with a control., Results: The sample of 52 pharmacy students that participated evaluated the intervention training strategy with higher scores than the control, with better overall satisfaction, perceived knowledge, and future recommendation scores than the control training strategy. Thus, an apparent effect which resulted from the use of instructional design strategies was seen for all learner experience variables (p < .01)., Conclusion: Improvement in the learner experience can be achieved by using instructional design strategies in cGMP training. Introduction: In the last decade, significant changes in pharmaceutical sciences have influenced the delivery of pharmacy education in Pharmacy programs. Integrated curriculum is one such method considered. We aimed to describe the perceived level of integrated curriculum among PharmD programs in the US., Methods: From October 26th, 2021, until January 18th, 2022, faculty administrators across 138 US pharmacy colleges were surveyed. Data was collected regarding each program's perceived curriculum integration and assessment integration. Characteristics of each college, including region and the type of school (public/private), were obtained from the PharmCAS website. Programs were categorized into high-integration and low-integration groups for analysis purposes. Descriptive and comparative analysis by the level of curriculum integration was performed., Results: Overall, 60 colleges completed surveys (participation rate = 43.48%). Most schools were from the South region (38.33%) and public colleges (53.33%). The average perceived curriculum integration was 45% (SD = 23.69), while the average perceived assessment integration was 36% (SD = 25.52). Pharmacy practice [clinical sciences] (76.67%) was the most common discipline considered for integration, and the social and administrative sciences (21.67%) was the discipline least commonly considered for integration. Case-based learning (95%) was the most common pedagogy strategy to integrate knowledge from different disciplines., Conclusions: Integrated curriculum implementation in the US PharmD programs varied across colleges. While most programs integrated their clinical practice courses, social and administrative sciences was the course least commonly integrated. This study reports on the outcomes assessment of pharmacy students' knowledge, perceptions, and satisfaction in a clinical nutrition course., Educational Activity and Setting: A 2-credit required course in clinical nutrition and diet therapy provides third-year professional pharmacy students with knowledge on various diet and nutrition topics. These relate to nutrition concepts in health and disease, the prevention and treatment of diet- and nutrition-related health conditions, and enteral and parenteral nutrition., Findings: Between the academic years 2012 and 2021, 720 students were enrolled in the course. Direct assessment data were collected from 227 students, and indirect assessment data from 173 students. On average, 85.7% of students acquired the necessary knowledge on all 23 course learning objectives. Average course evaluation ratings by students on a 5-point Likert scale (strongly disagree = 1; disagree = 2; somewhat agree = 3; agree = 4; strongly agree = 5) were high (4.43). High ratings were also recorded for students' satisfaction with the course structure (4.46) and teaching effectiveness (4.39). Students appreciated the clear presentation of the course learning objectives, requirements, and teaching effectiveness. They also acknowledged the quality of the learning experience and the course's relevance to pharmacy., Discussion: Students highly rated the course in achieving its learning objectives in addition to their satisfaction with its content, structure, delivery, and relevance to pharmacy education and practice. Graduating student pharmacists who are practice-ready is an essential responsibility of pharmacy programs and heavily emphasized by Accreditation Council of Pharmacy Education (ACPE), pharmacy education's accrediting body. Although several studies have examined students' readiness to engage in advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPE), few studies examine graduating students' readiness to practice. The objective of this study was to examine national trends in graduating pharmacy students' and preceptors' perceptions of students' pharmacy practice preparedness across a six-year time frame (2016-2021) and trends in graduating students' overall impressions of their program and the pharmacy profession across the same time period. A longitudinal descriptive study to examine trends in graduating student and preceptor perception was conducted utilizing data from the 2016-2021 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Graduating Student Surveys (GSS) (n = 65,461) and Preceptor Surveys (PS) (n = 41,951). Over six years of survey data analyzed, a large percentage of students at both public and private institutions reported they felt prepared for practice (96.5% vs 95.5% respectively, p < 0.001). There was overall agreement (>90%) among preceptors that graduating students were prepared to enter pharmacy practice based on responses, although preceptors had lower levels of agreement compared to students on most statements. Based on the findings, both graduating pharmacy students and preceptors feel that graduates are prepared to practice pharmacy, with consistent trends in perceptions over the last six years. Introduction: Podcasts are a popular way to learn and engage at the convenience of the listener. Education is incorporating podcasts to supplement and reinforce students learning inside and outside the classroom., Methods: The authors created a podcast covering the Top 200 commonly prescribed medications. This was to help students recall and reinforce medication knowledge they typically must learn on their own., Results: Student performance on post-tests improved (p = 0.0011) compared to pre-tests with an effect size r of 0.39 (0.37, 0.32, and 0.42 for P1, P2 and P3 respectively). Students reported the content was easy to follow, and they enjoyed learning from other students. The total number of plays for the podcast as of 19 July 2023 were 882. Each episode had a range of one to 89 number of plays., Discussion: The podcast was well received by students, and drug knowledge increased. While the podcasts were shorter in time, they still provided the foundational information for a first-year pharmacy student to know. From 2021 to 2023, 7978 graduates of pharmacy programs failed the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination on the first attempt. Presently, the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education monitors programs with a passage rate of ≥ 2 SDs below the national mean pass rate. In 2023, this should lead to monitoring 7 programs that produced 140 failures out of the total of 2472 failures (5.7 %). In our view, this is neither equitable nor demonstrative of sufficient accountability. Analysis of failure counts among the 144 programs reported by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy demonstrates a distribution curve highly skewed to the right. The evaluation of average failure counts across all programs suggests that schools with absolute failures ≥ 2 SDs higher than the average number of failures should be identified for monitoring, in addition to those falling ≥ 2 SDs below the national mean pass rate. Based on the 2023 data, this additional criterion corresponds to ≥ 35 failures/program. This threshold would prompt monitoring of 18 programs and 36.5 % of the total failures. Of the 7 programs that will be monitored based on the current Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education criteria, only 1 would be captured by the ≥ 35 failure method of selection; the remaining 6 contribute 85 total failures to the pool. Background: The development and implementation of Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) readiness assessments has been an area of increased interest to the academy since the publication of the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) standards in 2016. This scoping literature review aims to provide an updated summary of current APPE readiness assessment practices among ACPE-accredited institutions in the United States (US)., Methods: A literature search was conducted between 2022 and 2024 using the terms "APPE student readiness," "APPE readiness assessment," "APPE preparedness," "APPE student preparedness," "pharmacy" AND "readiness assessment", "pharmacy" AND "practice readiness," and "pharmacy" AND "student practice readiness" in Pubmed and Embase. The websites for the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education and Currents in Pharmacy Teaching and Learning were also searched using these terms. Abstracts for all results were reviewed. Abstract only and poster presentations were excluded, as well as articles centered on non-US and/or non-ACPE-accredited institutions. Data was collected regarding the outcomes assessed, type of assessment activity, and how the assessment was implemented. Results were reviewed by a second author to ensure consistency in reporting., Results: A total of 289 unique abstracts were reviewed by author pairs for inclusion based on relevance to the review objectives. A total of 13 articles were included in the final analysis. Each institution measured different knowledge areas, abilities, and entrustable professional activities (EPAs). Most programs had a summative component, with APPE readiness being primarily assessed in the final didactic year of the pharmacy curriculum. Most programs report at least one source of validity., Implications: Given the lack of specific APPE readiness assessment requirements in the ACPE Standards 2016, the different assessment methods among programs were not surprising. However, the commonalities identified can be leveraged with the release of the Curricular Outcomes and Entrustable Professional Activities (COEPA) 2022 to promote a standardized definition of APPE readiness. Background and Purpose: Research training programs in the community pharmacy sector have not been well established. This study showcases a year-long guided research training program undertaken in hospital and community workplaces by pre-registrant pharmacists, and compares the perceived impact on learners in both sectors., Educational Activity and Setting: A two-year cohort study (2021-2022) of pre-registrant pharmacists enrolled in a research training program requiring them to undertake an individual project at their workplace over one year at either a community or hospital workplace. Outcome measures were pre-registrant perceptions of training impact and type of projects completed., Findings: The results of this study demonstrate that the year-long guided research training program delivered to 403 pre-registrant pharmacists was perceived to be impactful to both community and hospital pre-registrant pharmacists and gave them the confidence to pursue further research and see research skills as an important attribute for the profession. Barriers to research included lack of time for both sectors but workplace support and lack of project ideas were especially noted in the community sector. Background and Objectives: The 1 + X certificate system, introduced in China in 2019, integrates academic credentials with vocational skill certificates to meet the heightened demand for skilled talents in the growing economy. This study aims to innovate and evaluate the vocational pharmaceutical education system under the 1 + X certificate framework, specifically addressing the gap between theoretical education and workplace requirements., Materials and Methods: A retrospective observational approach analyzed 490 pharmacy students over two academic years. The 2021 cohort underwent 1 + X integrated education, while the 2020 cohort followed conventional education. We collaborated closely with industry partners to identify and compile typical job competencies, formulating work projects aligned with industry demands. Combining the skill level standards and assessment content of "1+X Pharmaceutical Purchasing and Sales" and "1+X Pharmaceutical Preparation", we revised the course standards, incorporating typical work projects into the 2021 pharmacy professional teaching curriculum. This constituted the fundamental content of the 1 + X education reform. Statistical analysis compared course scores and 1 + X certificate examination performance., Results: The 2021 cohort, under the 1 + X educational model, demonstrated higher average scores in pharmacy courses, with significant improvements in pharmacology (1 + X vs. Traditional education: 58.40 ± 14.20 vs. 53.44 ± 14.67), clinical pharmacotherapy (72.74 ± 10.28 vs. 63.15 ± 11.03), and pharmaceutical distribution and marketing (79.34 ± 10.96 vs. 67.50 ± 15.82). 1 + X certificate pass rates and satisfaction with the model were also higher than the 2020 cohort., Conclusion: The 1 + X certificate system is useful for developing talent in Chinese vocational education, effectively integrating assessments with industry standards. Objective: Clinical reasoning is an essential skill set for practicing pharmacists to possess. Given its complex nature, optimal pedagogies for teaching clinical reasoning are largely unknown. The use of scaffolding to expand a student's zone of proximal development and improve clinical reasoning performance was assessed in this study., Methods: This prospective, observational cohort study of second professional year (P2) students compared performance of those who were exposed to a clinical reasoning scaffolding tool (CRST) to historic control P2 students (No CRST) on FARMR notes in alignment with the Pharmacists' Patient Care Process. Student performance was assessed using an entrustment-like scale for each of 5 sections (Findings, Assessment and goals, Recommendations, Monitoring, and Rationale) of the FARMR to link classroom and experiential education settings., Results: In total, 141 CRST students from 28 groups were compared to 77 No CRST students from 13 groups. CRST students performed significantly higher in Assessment and goals of therapy, Recommendations, Monitoring, Rationale sections but no difference in Findings., Conclusions: Scaffolding has been utilized successfully in other health professions education. Introduction: Limited information is available regarding whether malleable factors such as critical thinking skills are associated with academic performance among underrepresented minority pharmacy students. This study assessed the relationship between critical thinking skills and grade point average (GPA) among pharmacy students attending a Historically Black College., Methods: A cross sectional study design was utilized to evaluate the association between student's GPA and critical thinking skills. Demographic data and GPA were abstracted from student records. The health sciences reasoning test with numeracy was administered to pharmacy students at Howard University during the 2017 to 2018 academic year. Critical thinking scores were classified as weak, moderate, or strong/superior. A one way analysis of variance was conducted to ascertain if the average GPA differed based on critical thinking skills category. A multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to determine whether student's critical thinking skill category was associated with the cumulative GPA after accounting for other factors., Results: Among 217 students, the mean GPA among students with a weak critical thinking skills score (3.22 ± 0.40) was lower compared to students with a strong/superior score (3.39 ± 0.33) with a p-value of 0.029. Objectives: ChatGPT is an innovative artificial intelligence designed to enhance human activities and serve as a potent tool for information retrieval. This study aimed to evaluate the performance and limitation of ChatGPT on fourth-year pharmacy student examination., Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on February 2023 at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Chiang Mai University, Thailand. The exam contained 16 multiple-choice questions and 2 short-answer questions, focusing on classification and medical management of shock and electrolyte disorders., Results: Out of the 18 questions, ChatGPT provided 44% (8 out of 18) correct responses. In contrast, the students provided a higher accuracy rate with 66% (12 out of 18) correctly answered questions. The findings of this study underscore that while AI exhibits proficiency, it encounters limitations when confronted with specific queries derived from practical scenarios, on the contrary with pharmacy students who possess the liberty to explore and collaborate, mirroring real-world scenarios., Conclusions: Users must exercise caution regarding its reliability, and interpretations of AI-generated answers should be approached judiciously due to potential restrictions in multi-step analysis and reliance on outdated data. Objectives: To describe existing growth mindset literature within pharmacy and health care education, describe how a growth mindset can be beneficial in the accreditation process, and propose potential ways to promote a growth mindset in faculty, preceptors, students, and staff within pharmacy education., Findings: To help pharmacy learners develop a growth mindset, existing literature emphasizes the need for a shift toward and aligning assessment with a growth mindset, helping to create self-directed adaptive learners, leading to health care providers who can adjust their practice to tackle expected and unexpected challenges throughout their careers. Strategies to create a culture of growth mindset identified include training faculty and learners on growth mindset and developing new assessments that track a learner's growth. Recommendations for pharmacy educators include encouraging educators to assess their own growth mindset and use a variety of teaching methods and provide feedback on learner effort that encourages the process of learning rather than focusing on individual attributes, traits, and results., Summary: Growth mindset intersects with accreditation standards for both professional degree programs and providers of continuing pharmacy education. Background: The objective of this review was to characterize the methods of delivery and assessment of Choose Your Own Adventure (CYOA)-style activities in pharmacy education. A secondary objective was to utilize available data to determine best practices for educators interested in developing similar activities., Methods: A meta-narrative approach according to the guidance of the RAMESES standards was used for this review. A broad literature search was conducted using PubMed and Embase. Studies published on the use of a CYOA-style patient case format in pharmacy education were identified and appraised individually for their relevance., Results: Thirteen studies from the pharmacy education literature were included in the review. Activities were delivered for 25 unique topics, largely in small groups during class via patient simulation or interactive data collection software. Overall, students have a positive perception of CYOA-style activities, with positive results regarding knowledge development and student engagement. The most commonly reported challenge to implementing CYOA-style patient case activities was the up-front time commitment to develop activities., Implications: This review provides a snapshot of the small but expanding body of literature on CYOA-style patient case activities in pharmacy education. CYOA-style activities are recommended for expanded use in pharmacy education as the preponderance of studies that assessed knowledge development showed significant improvement in knowledge after participation in CYOA-style activities. Background and Purpose: To investigate final-year student pharmacists' experiences of a new module for North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination® (NAPLEX®) preparation at one college of pharmacy in the United States., Educational Activity and Setting: All student pharmacists enrolled in a new Spring 2023 module for NAPLEX preparation (n = 118) were invited to complete an electronic questionnaire and participate in a semi-structured interview. The questionnaire investigated the perceived helpfulness, grading, importance, prioritization, structure, and timing of the module in the curriculum, as well as assignment choices, confidence building, and time management using a six-point Likert scale. Semi-structured interviews investigated experiences with NAPLEX modules, time management, and course format. Questionnaire data were descriptively analyzed; interview data were thematically analyzed., Findings: Forty-one completed questionnaires and seven interviews were analyzed. Median scores for questionnaire items were six (denoting strongly agree) for three items, five (denoting agree) for seven items, and four (denoting somewhat agree) for two items. Twenty-three (56%) students desired an online self-directed (asynchronous) course structure. Seventeen (42%) students desired a mixture of short and long course assignments with a greater proportion of short course assignments while another 17 (42%) desired only short course assignments. Two themes were constructed from interviews: timing (when to study for NAPLEX) and structure (how to study for NAPLEX)., Summary: Study findings indicated typically positive perceptions of a module for NAPLEX preparation among final-year student pharmacists at a college of pharmacy in the United States. Background: Effective communication with patients and colleagues is key to a pharmacist's ability to provide effective person-centered care. Neurodivergent patients face many barriers when interacting with health professionals; increased awareness and understanding are therefore paramount to the pharmacist's role. This paper describes an innovative teaching partnership between a school of pharmacy and an inclusive theater company which aims to develop awareness and skills of undergraduate pharmacy students in relation to communicating with patients with autism and/or learning disabilities., Educational Activity: Forum theater and role-plays were used to complement existing communication skills teaching in Years two and four of the undergraduate MPharm (Master of Pharmacy) program. The sessions were designed and delivered in partnership between academic teaching staff and a theater company of neurodivergent actors. An online evaluation form was used to obtain student feedback on these sessions (two Likert-style questions and three open format questions)., Critical Analysis of the Educational Activity: Of the 241 students who attended a session in 2021, 70 (29%) provided feedback. Feedback was positive, with 99% of respondents finding the session useful. Students spoke about how they found the sessions supportive and enlightening, helping them to reflect on their own communication skills. As a result, the teaching has been developed and now expanded through all years of the undergraduate program. Introduction: Promoting diversity among faculty, administrators, and librarians in schools and colleges of pharmacy (SCOP) would be beneficial for the recruitment and retention of students from diverse backgrounds. Graduating such diverse pharmacists could assist in reducing healthcare disparities. Promoting diversity requires a climate that is inclusive of people from all backgrounds. The goal of this study was to examine the working environment of historically marginalized faculty, administrators, and librarians within pharmacy education., Methods: An electronic survey was administered to all faculty, administrators, and librarians listed in the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy roster., Results: Responses from 339 participants were analyzed. Twenty-seven percent of these participants either observed or personally experienced misconduct during the previous five years. When action was taken, it resulted in the cessation of the misconduct only 38% of the time. Respondents most frequently identified the following as ways to make it easier to address misconduct: support from supervisors, support from peers, and education on how to address misconduct., Conclusions: Exclusionary, intimidating, offensive, and/or hostile communication/behaviors towards historically marginalized faculty, administrators, and librarians do exist in SCOP.
