First published in 1987. Several of the chapters in this book were presented at a symposium held at the British Educational Research Association Conference in Bristol in September 1986. This volume's title is a deliberate echo of the title of the Plowden Report (CACE, 1967). It is now twenty years since Plowden was published and the chapters in this collection constitute an attempt to present a new perspective on one of the central assumptions which underpinned the Report — on the ‘nature of ‘children'. Within the book there are two themes of particular importance. The first is focussed on how children themselves are perceived, bearing in mind new developments in child psychology and in sociological studies of children's perspectives and behaviour in schools. The second concerns the implications which such developments may have for teaching and learning processes in classrooms.

First Published in 1994. The growing interest in work of mentors within school-based initial teacher training courses in England and Wales is a phenomenon of the recent past. The development of innovative schemes within secondary education, such as the Oxford Internship scheme (Benton, 1990) generated a national debate about the nature of partnership between schools and higher education institutions, which the government joined when it introduced experimental forms of initial teacher education in the Licensed and Articled Teacher schemes (DES, 1988 and 1989). These were extensively school-based, and included both secondary and primary Mentor-like behaviour may come from many sources within a school, and the appointed mentor may engage in such unmentor-like activities as making formal summative assessments of students with career-shaping implications of'passing'and'failing'. This volume is an attempt to provide some illumination and indicate some of the central issues to be addressed. Most children arrive at school with the notion that being independent and having the desire to take responsibility has been seen, in their homes, as a good thing. However, what often happens is that responsibility may be denied them in school and further bids for independence are viewed as negative behaviour.
