The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change. Globally, the number of rivers with intermittent flow is increasing due to climate change and water abstraction for human consumption. Currently, our understanding of how hydrology in subtropical rivers with intermittent flow affects the structure and dynamics of aquatic communities is poorly understood. Here, we investigated how fish α‐ and β‐diversity patterns in intermittent channels in the lower reaches of the Okavango Delta respond to seasonal flooding and drought. Under low‐flow conditions, ephemeral habitat had higher α‐diversity, and this was influenced by a combination of fish aggregation and apparent transient legacy effects as habitat patches became smaller and more isolated. Investigation of changes in fish assemblage structure across different hydrological periods and habitat types showed significant species turnover when water levels fell, suggesting a strong influence from species sorting. During high‐water periods, species assemblages were homogenized both at local and regional scales, suggesting a greater influence of mass effects. Our findings support hydrology as a major factor regulating diversity patterns in intermittent rivers of a major wetland in a semiarid region of subtropical Africa. We infer from these findings that maintenance of a relatively natural flow regime will be necessary for conserving aquatic ecosystem structure and function in this system.

Owning to dissimilarity with native macrophytes, invasive macrophytes may negatively affect the diet and foraging efficiency of fishes. We evaluated the invertebrate availability, diet composition, and foraging efficiency of four fish species that use macrophytes as habitat in a native and a highly invasive macrophyte. The samples were taken in a reservoir in Brazil (22° 33′ S, 52°54′ W). We collected invertebrates and fishes simultaneously in macrophyte stands dominated by the invasive Poaceae Urochloa arrecta and the native Eichhornia azurea. We evaluated the foraging efficiency by the total number of prey consumed and by the degree of stomach fullness. We used an approach based on resampling procedures to compare differences in composition of invertebrates, composition of fish diet, and the similarity between invertebrates and fish diet. The abundance of invertebrates and the diet composition differed significantly between plants. On the other hand, fish foraging efficiency did not differ between macrophytes. Despite this lack of difference of foraging efficiency, the lower abundance of food items in the invasive macrophyte and the significant changes in fish diet suggest that U. arrecta is not a favorable feeding habitat for fishes, compared to the native E. azurea.

The potential role of positive interactions among co-invaders is at the core of the invasional meltdown hypothesis. The interaction of non-native species could result in an exacerbation of each other’s effects. Thus, the resulting effect of multiple non-native species on ecosystems can be greater than the sum of their individual effects. We designed an analytical framework and a set of mesocosm experiments to assess the potential synergistic effects of three non-native species (Limnoperna fortunei, Astronotus crassipinnis, and Hydrilla verticillata) in a highly invaded floodplain in southern Brazil. We analyzed ecosystem, community, and population attributes in scenarios with non-natives. Our hypothesis of a synergistic effect was not supported. Even though effects of the invasive species were detected for all ecological levels, evidence indicated that these effects were additive. In addition to adding to the statement that origin (i.e., native vs. non-native status) does matter, we provide a tool to differentiate additive, synergistic, and antagonistic effects in situations with multiple invasions, and experimentally demonstrate additive effects of non-native species at different ecological levels.

Invasive macrophytes usually increase the homogenisation of habitats and can affect local communities with negative effects on the food chain. We evaluated experimentally the composition, density, richness and diversity of the invertebrates in the invasive macrophyte Hydrilla verticillata and assessed the potential effects of this macrophyte on the diet and foraging efficiency of small native fishes. The native macrophyte Egeria najas was used as control, since it has very similar physical structure and physical complexity to H. verticillata. Macrophytes of both species were maintained separately in aquaria with the fishes, and the invertebrates richness and abundance associated with plants and within fish stomach were evaluated. No significant difference was found in the richness and diversity of invertebrates attached to macrophytes; however, the two macrophytes differed in regard to invertebrate composition, and the density was significantly higher in H. verticillata. The fish foraging efficiency was high in both macrophytes, and the difference between them was not significant. The fish diet did not differ significantly between the native and the invasive macrophyte in respect to invertebrate composition, abundance and richness, and trophic niche breadth. We found no evidence that H. verticillata negatively affects the density of associated invertebrates, and as a consequence, fish diet and foraging efficiency. Our results indicate that the replacement of E. najas by a similar biomass of H. verticillata does not affect the feeding behaviour of associated fish species.

Fin clips have been proposed as a non‐lethal and non‐invasive alternative to dorsal muscle samples in stable isotope analysis. However, potential differences in elemental composition and turnover rates can bias inferences when different tissues are combined. Here, we tested the average difference and correlation of the isotopic signature of δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N between muscle and fin samples in two arge‐bodied fishes: Longnose Gar (Lepisosteus osseus) and Smallmouth Buffalo (Ictiobus bubalus). We found that δ¹⁵N signatures of muscle and fin tissues were strongly and positively correlated for both species, although the muscle tissue for Smallmouth Buffalo was slightly more enriched in δ15N. δ¹³C signatures of both tissues were significatively different and not strongly correlated for Longnose Gar, but similar and strongly correlated for Smallmouth Buffalo. Our results suggest that fin and muscle tissue can be combined for analyses of δ¹⁵N, but correction for higher enrichment of muscle tissue may be necessary for Smallmouth Buffalo. Conversely, combining fin and muscle tissue for analysis of δ¹³C requires more caution due to their weaker correlation and dependence of species identity.

Habitat complexity drives aquatic community attributes, including the beta diversity components. We tested the hypothesis that community diversity, richness and density are higher on complex artificial substrates than on simple ones. Additionally, we hypothesised that the species occurrence would change from the simplest substrates to the more complex ones because complex habitats provide more niches and methods of exploiting environmental resources, thereby supporting larger numbers of organisms. We expected that the periphytic community would present a nestedness pattern when considering the quantitative index and turnover for the qualitative index. The effect of habitat complexity on the beta diversity was mediated by the relative species abundances. The periphytic algae density was higher on the complex substrates, but contrary to our expectations, the species richness and diversity did not increase on the complex substrates. Based on our findings, we suggest that habitat complexity can play a crucial role in structuring beta diversity patterns. However, we highlight that the responses of species turnover and nestedness to the variation in habitat complexity contrasted with the abundance and species occurrence approach. Additionally, we suggest that the species richness patterns in the periphytic community are independent of increases in the number of individuals.

Introduction: Our national protocol for traumatic brain injury dictates that hypocoagulated patients with mild trauma and initial tomography scan with no intracranial traumatic changes must be hospitalized for 24 hours and do a post-surveillance tomography scan. The main goal of this study was to evaluate the clinical relevance of these measures. Material and methods: A prospective observational study was undertaken in four hospitals. Adult hypocoagulated traumatic brain injury patients with a normal tomography scan were included. The main outcomes evaluated were rate of delayed intracranial hemorrhage, rate of admission in a neurosurgical department, rate of complications related with surveillance and rate of prolonged hospitalization due to complications. An analysis combining data from a previously published report was also done. Results: A total of 178 patients were included. Four patients (2.3%) had a delayed hemorrhage and three (1.7%) were hospitalized in a neurosurgery ward. No cases of symptomatic hemorrhage were identified. No surgery was needed, and all patients had their anticoagulation stopped. Complications during surveillance were reported in seven patients (3.9%), of which two required prolonged hospitalization. Discussion: The rate of complications related with surveillance was higher than the rate of delayed hemorrhages. The initial period of in-hospital surveillance did not convey any advantage since the management of patients was never dictated by neurological changes. Post-surveillance tomography played a role in deciding about anticoagulation suspension and prolongation of hospitalization. Conclusion: Delayed hemorrhage is a rare event and the need for surgery even rarer. The need for in-hospital surveillance should be reassessed. Introdução: O nosso protocolo nacional para traumatismos cranioencefálicos recomenda que doentes hipocoagulados com trauma craniano ligeiro e tomografia inicial sem alterações traumáticas intracranianas sejam hospitalizados 24 horas e façam uma tomografia computorizada pós-vigilância. O principal objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a relevância clínica dessas medidas. Material e Métodos: Foi realizado em quatro hospitais um estudo prospetivo e observacional. Foram incluídos adultos hipocoagulados com trauma craniano e tomografia normal. Os principais outcomes avaliados foram: taxa de hemorragia intracraniana tardia, taxa de internamento numa enfermaria de neurocirurgia, taxa de complicações relacionadas com a vigilância e taxa de hospitalização prolongada por complicações. Resultados: Foram incluídos um total de 178 doentes. Quatro doentes (2,3%) apresentaram hemorragia tardia e três (1,7%) foram mantidos hospitalizados numa enfermaria de Neurocirurgia. Não foram documentados casos de hemorragia tardia sintomática. Nenhuma cirurgia foi necessária e em todos estes doentes a anticoagulação foi interrompida. Durante a vigilância, foram relatadas complicações em sete doentes (3,9%), dos quais dois exigiram hospitalização prolongada. Discussão: A taxa de complicações relacionadas com a vigilância foi maior do que a taxa de hemorragia tardia. O período inicial de vigilância intra-hospitalar não trouxe qualquer vantagem, já que o manejo dos doentes nunca foi ditado por alterações neurológicas. A tomografia pós-vigilância desempenhou um papel importante na decisão sobre a suspensão da anticoagulação e o prolongamento da hospitalização. Conclusão: A hemorragia tardia é um evento raro e a necessidade de cirurgia ainda mais. Deve ser reavaliada a necessidade de vigilância intra-hospitalar. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Climatic changes predict alteration in dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in freshwater ecosystems. However, the responses of invasive submerged macrophytes to DIC are rarely assessed. We evaluated the phenotypic plasticity of the invasive macrophyte Hydrilla verticillata in response to DIC, and how the presence of a native, Egeria najas, influences plasticity of the invader. Both species grew under three DIC levels in monocultures and mixed cultures. In monocultures, H. verticillata’s relative growth rates (RGR) were higher than E. najas’s RGR in most treatments. In addition, increasing DIC leads to faster RGR for H. verticillata, evidencing its superior performance at higher DIC levels. In mixed cultures, H. verticillata grew faster in all treatments. We also found a larger number of branches of H. verticillata in both types of cultures, evidencing greater dispersal ability with increasing DIC. In conclusion, higher H. verticillata RGR with increasing DIC indicates that this species exhibited greater plasticity to carbon availability than the native species, which can partially explain its invasion success in ecosystems around the world. Our results also suggest that H. verticillata will benefit from increasing DIC in freshwater ecosystems during scenarios of climate change.

Hydrilla verticillata (Hydrocharitaceae) is an exotic invasive macrophyte that has caused severe ecological and economic damage worldwide. H. verticillata has invaded the main channel of the river in the Upper Parana River floodplain (Brazil), but it has not become established in floodplain lakes. Although some abiotic factors have been shown to affect the success of H. verticillata invasions, the role of biotic interactions remains unclear. Here, we set a laboratory experiment investigating how interactions with resident species may influence the success of H. verticillata invasions in floodplain lakes. Based on field observations, we selected three species that represent the most probable ecological interactions negatively impacting the early establishment of H. verticillata: a herbivorous fish (Moenkhausia forestii: Characidae) and herbivorous gastropods in the genus Pomacea (Ampullariidae), both natives, and an exotic shredder fish (Astronotus crassipinnis: Cichlidae). The individual and combined effects of these species on the early phase of H. verticillata establishment were evaluated. The native gastropod had the greatest effect on limiting plant growth due to herbivory, whereas the small native herbivorous fish mostly consumed H. verticillata leaves, and the non-native shredder fish dislodged the plants from the sediment, preventing their establishment and increasing the number of free propagules (plant fragments) of previously rooted plants. The experimental treatment that combined all three species tended to reduce plant performance descriptors. Our results indicate that biotic resistance may play an important role in reducing the early establishment of H. verticillata in the lakes of this Neotropical floodplain. However, the disturbance caused by the exotic shredder fish may have an undesirable effect at larger scales because it stimulated the production of propagules that may spread to other connected aquatic ecosystems.

α-diversity often responds to habitat structural complexity as a unimodal function. In aquatic systems, increasing density of aquatic vegetation creates more habitat structural complexity for fishes, but only up to a certain threshold, beyond which fish abundance and diversity are restricted by reduced space. As a result, species turnover and nestedness should be observed over habitat structural complexity gradients, reflecting the sorting of species according to aspects of their environment. We investigated the relationship of fish α and β diversity along gradients of habitat structural complexity created by aquatic vegetation in the floodplain of Upper Parana River. We collected a total of 1832 fishes (24 species) along vegetation density gradients. Our results revealed that α diversity peaked at intermediate levels of habitat structural complexity where interstitial spaces were numerous but no so small as to limit occupancy by most fishes. Low α diversity was associated with lower habitat structural complexity, as commonly reported, and this may result from the influence of predation mortality or threat where there is less physical structure that provides refuge from predators and interference with predator lines of sight for prey detection. Fish diversity is low in patches with high habitat structural complexity because small interstitial spaces restrict fish size and dissolved oxygen concentration sometimes is low. Aquatic vegetation density in floodplain habitats therefore functions as a strong environmental filter influencing spatial patterns of fish α and β diversity.

Abstract The last undammed stretch of the Upper Paraná River in the Brazilian territory is, to date, not completely inventoried, which rises concerns given the rapid rates of species extinctions. Aim Here, we provide an inventory of macrophyte taxa recorded in the last undammed 230 km stretch of the Upper Paraná River. Methods We inventoried macrophyte taxa in 27 sampling stations including lakes, the main channel of the river, and the tributary confluences in November 2013 and in May and November 2014. Macrophyte were sampled in littoral zones. We explored taxonomic and life form aspects of the recorded species. We used species accumulation curves and ordination techniques to summarize the variation in richness and composition of macrophyte species. Results We recorded 71 macrophyte taxa in 35 families. Most species were emergent, amphibian, free-floating, and rooted submerged. At the main channel of the Upper Paraná River, Eichhornia azurea, E. crassipes, and Paspalum repens represented the most frequent species. The most frequent species in the tributary confluences were Ludwigia sp., E. azurea, and Polygonum ferrugineum, while in lakes, Ludwigia sp., Oxycaryum cubense, and E. azurea were the most representative taxa. In regard to macrophyte composition, the invasive Hydrilla verticillata mostly influenced sites in the Upper Paraná River, in the ordination space, while floodplain lakes were mostly characterized by the presence of species such as Scleria melaleuca, Panicum maximum, and Thelypteris sp., among others. Conclusions Our study indicates that the last undammed stretch of the Upper Paraná River contains a large number of macrophyte species, suggesting that this stretch is an important area for the conservation of macrophyte species. In addition, the occurrence of invasive species (e.g., Hydrilla verticillata) within the investigated stretch deserves attention in terms of potential impacts for which management action may be necessary.

Fish species distribution is commonly influenced by aquatic macrophytes. Despite of the usage of these plants as habitats for refuge, feeding and reproduction by fish, too dense macrophyte stands make microhabitats unsuitable for certain fish species. Moreover, the distance from the open water within macrophyte stands may also affect fish species distribution because of increasingly harsh conditions. In order to test differences in species distribution of small-sized fish within macrophyte stands we sampled stands of Eichhornia spp presenting low and high levels of macrophyte density and at several distances from the open water (0, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 m). We measured depth, temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity and pH of the water column and attributes of the fish assemblages. We captured 1,167 individuals of fish belonging to 24 species. Oxygen was significantly higher in lower levels of macrophyte density and similar patterns were found for fish abundance and species richness. These results indicate that, in general, small sized-fish prefer less dense macrophyte stands. In addition, both depth and oxygen were significantly higher at the closest distance from open water, where the composition of fish species was also distinct from those found in other distances. In accordance with changes in species composition, different fish species showed divergent distribution along distances from the open water. Together these results demonstrate that oxygen content influences fish species composition, and indicate that fish species are able to use less suitable microhabitats most likely because of morphological, physiological and behavioral adaptations.

Several species of aquatic macrophytes have invaded ecosystems outside their ranges, producing a variety of impacts on native biota. In this study, we tested the role of the invasive macrophyte Hydrilla verticillata as a foraging habitat for small fish species. To achieve this goal, we assessed the feeding activity and diet composition of fish captured in patches of the invasive H. verticillata and of a similar native macrophyte (Egeria najas). Feeding activity did not differ significantly between H. verticillata and E. najas, indicating that foraging activity was not affected. However, differences in diet composition were significant in three out of five fish species and marginally significant in one species, suggesting that the invasive and native macrophytes provide different types of food resources for fish. Thus, although H. verticillata does not affect the foraging activity, it has the potential to affect the assemblages of small-sized fish through changes in the proportions of food resources.© 2014 Associação Brasileira de Ciência Ecológica e Conservação. We investigated the potential effects of an invasive alien Poaceae (Urochloa arrecta) on the abundance, richness, and composition of native macrophytes and fish. Samples were collected in patches of macrophytes dominated by the invasive species and in others dominated by a native macrophyte (Eichhornia azurea). We assessed the potential effects of these two species on macrophyte and fish abundance and richness, as well as in fish assemblage composition. The effects of both macrophytes did not differ when they were in similar, low biomasses. Consistent with our expectations, however, the abundance of native macrophytes and fish decreased with increasing U. arrecta biomass, and both assemblages were eliminated at the extreme high levels of biomass attained by this species. In contrast, E. azurea did not affect the assemblages because this native species never reached levels of biomass as high as those recorded for the invasive species. Competition for space and light most likely determines the elimination of macrophytes in patches that are extensively colonized by U. arrecta, whereas fish assemblages do not occupy these patches due most likely to the limited space available for movement and foraging. Thus, U. arrecta is a source of concern for biodiversity conservation because it has negative influences on both assemblages when it is well developed, which is true in the later stages of the invasion process.

Macrophytes increase structural complexity in aquatic ecosystems and their emergent structures provide habitats for spiders. We sampled spiders in three species of macrophytes (Eichhornia azurea, Eichhornia crassipes and Limnobium laevigatum) and measured five traits indicative of structural complexity: horizontal structure, vertical structure, plant height, macrophyte richness and macrophyte biomass. We tested the hypothesis that spider density and diversity increase and guild composition changes along a gradient of structural complexity provided by macrophytes. Vertical and horizontal structure and macrophyte richness covaried with the attributes of spider assemblages. However, vertical structure was an important habitat-complexity trait because it covaried with all spider attributes investigated, positively affecting density and taxa richness and changing guild composition. Our findings suggest that the increase in macrophyte structural complexity, primarily through vertical structure, provides additional habitat and microhabitat variability. These forms of variability may increase the availability of prey and shelter and even reduce intraguild predation between spiders, thereby potentially increasing density and taxa richness. Moreover, an increase in vertical complexity provides available structures for web attachment, favoring web-building spiders and consequently affecting guild composition. Thus, habitat structure plays an important role in structuring spider assemblages and specific traits may mediate changes in particular attributes of spider assemblages.

Habitat complexity has long been known to influence animal community structure by increasing the number of available habitats. Fifty years have passed since MacArthur brothers published the seminal paper “On bird species diversity”, which revolutionized studies of habitat structure. This paper first evidenced and quantified the relationship between species diversity (birds) and habitat structural complexity (the number of stratified layers of landscape vegetation). In this article, we aim to pay homage to R. H. MacArthur’s contribution and to briefly analyze the citation history and influence of “On bird species diversity”, focusing primarily on aquatic studies. We searched for all papers that cited “On bird species diversity” on Thomson Reuters (ISI—Web of Knowledge) and analyzed them for temporal citation trends. In addition, considering only aquatic papers, we explored whether and how habitat complexity was measured, as well as the ecological organization level, attributes of organisms, taxonomic groups and study design (observational or experimental). “On bird species diversity” citations increased over time, but this paper was less cited by limnologists compared to terrestrial and marine scientists. The majority of investigations in aquatic ecosystems quantified habitat complexity, but few used mathematical modeling. The high number of citations, which continues to increase, shows the great influence of “On bird species diversity” on ecological studies and typifies it as a classic in the ecological literature. However, the low citation frequency found in papers devoted to freshwater ecosystems indicates that limnologists in general neglect this original contribution in studies of habitat complexity.

Hydrilla verticillata recently invaded a protected area in the Upper Parana River floodplain. In a rare opportunity, when this non-indigenous species co-occurred with the native Egeria najas in a secondary channel of the river, we assessed its effects on assemblage of small-sized fish. Traps were used to catch fish inside macrophyte patches in periods of low and high water. We assessed fish abundance, biomass, diversity, richness and the community composition (using a DCA). The number of fish species did not differ between plants. Fish abundance and biomass were significantly higher during the low water period but plant species did not affect these attributes. Similarly, fish assemblage composition differed only between seasons. Our results indicate that the oscillations in the water level had a greater effect on the small-sized fish assemblage than the presence of the non-indigenous macrophyte. In addition, H. verticillata favors small fish assemblages such as the native does; however, we contend that our conclusions are valid only for habitats scarcely colonized by native plant species. The invasion of other habitats colonized by a high diversity of native species of macrophytes, which are key for small-sized fish, is a matter of concern.

Aquatic macrophytes play an important role in structuring communities in aquatic environments. These plants provide physical structure, increase habitat complexity and heterogeneity and affect various organisms like invertebrates, fishes and waterbirds. The complexity provided by macrophytes has been exhaustively studied in aquatic environments. However, macrophyte complexity has rarely been measured in a standardized fashion, making comparisons among different studies and the establishment of general conclusions difficult. To address this issue, this review is focused on questions related to the habitat structural complexity provided by these plants, exploring: i) how complexity has been viewed by ecologists, with an emphasis on macrophyte studies; ii) the pros and cons of several methods used to quantify plant complexity; iii) the consequences of habitat structuring by macrophytes on invertebrates and fish and possible causes, mediated by habitat complexity, that lead to changes in these animal assemblages; iv) potential impacts of non-native macrophyte species on habitat complexity and v) the importance of complexity provided by macrophytes to management strategies for maintaining aquatic biodiversity. We examined literature produced in both temperate and tropical regions, but prioritized the latter. We found a great variety of habitat complexity measurements that are applied to aquatic macrophytes to understand their influence on attached animal assemblages. A lack of standardization (considering the wide range of techniques and scales of resolution used) limits comparisons between different studies exploring this subject, in which biological samples and physical substrates were used to explore these relationships. Macrophytes affect animal assemblages and promote biodiversity through a chain of mechanisms, related to habitat complexity, that involve the availability of shelter and feeding sites. Invasive macrophyte species may modify habitat structure and thus influence associated organisms. In this sense, they are suitable as the main focus of management strategies aimed at biodiversity restoration and conservation.

Ilha Grande National Park is an important conservation unit localized in the Southern part of the upper Parana river floodplain (Brazil) that includes diverse aquatic environments. Oligochaeta (Annelida) is a large group of invertebrates, with several small specimens inhabiting almost every possible niche at most freshwater ecosystem. The goal of the present study was to examine the spatial variation of Oligochaeta community in five floodplain lakes from the Ilha Grande National Park and relate the distribution with abiotic variables. Samples were taken at five sampling stations using a modified Petersen grab. Thirteen species of Oligochaeta belonging to two families Naididae and Tubificidae were recorded. Different patterns of richness and abiotic factors were identified among the lakes located in the island and at the margin of Parana river. The different patterns of granulometric texture affected directly the distribution of the Oligochaeta assemblage of theses environments. The results of this study permit to infer that the Oligochaeta assemblage, in preserved areas, present a higher richness in relation to long term studies with more frequent samplings. We concluded that Ilha Grande National Park contributes for the preservation of benthic invertebrates.
