Objective: To evaluate the oral health and related factors among people with visual impairment in a municipality in southeastern Brazil. Methods: A cross-sectional and descriptive household study was carried out on a representative sample of people with visual impairments in a medium-sized city in Brazil. A clinical-dental examination was performed (evaluating tooth loss, caries, periodontal health, dental plaque use and need of prosthesis) and a semistructured questionnaire was applied, investigating the socioeconomic conditions (sex, age, marital status, skin color and income) and the use of dental services (reason, time since, and type of service used [private/public] in last dental visit). Descriptive and bivariate analysis were performed to asses the factors related to oral health. Results: The mean age of participants was 65 years (±15.05), with the majority women (70.9%). 53.1% of the interviewees were edentulous, but 58.2% had a good perception of oral health. The blind ones use less public services (p=0.038) and with a lower frequency (p=0.014) than subjects with low vision. Resumo Introdução a busca por atendimento odontológico é um parâmetro importante para averiguar como os indivíduos compreendem a saúde bucal. Objetivo avaliar a utilização de serviços odontológicos e fatores associados em pacientes oncológicos em Minas Gerais, Brasil. Material e método estudo transversal, realizado com uma amostra de 441 pacientes adultos frequentadores de uma associação voluntária de apoio a pacientes oncológicos no Estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. O desfecho foi avaliado por meio do autorrelato de consulta odontológica no último ano. As variáveis independentes incluíram condições socioeconômicas, saúde geral e relacionada ao câncer, saúde bucal e cuidados odontológicos. As associações entre o desfecho e as variáveis independentes foram testadas por meio de regressão logística bivariada e múltipla, sendo os resultados expressos por meio de odds ratio (OR) e intervalos de confiança de 95% (IC95%). Resultado a prevalência de consulta odontológica no último ano foi de 33,3%. Os indivíduos que possuem entre quatro e sete (OR: 1,80; IC95%: 1,02-3,18) e aqueles com oito ou mais anos de estudo (OR: 3,20; IC95%: 1,07-9,60) apresentaram maiores, enquanto os edêntulos (OR: 0,44; IC95%: 0,21-0,92) apresentaram menores chances de consulta odontológica no último ano, independentemente de condições socioeconômicas, saúde geral e saúde bucal. Conclusão foi baixa a procura por consulta odontológica no último ano entre os pacientes oncológicos. Além disso, houve desigualdades relacionadas à escolaridade e ao número de dentes remanescentes na utilização dos serviços. A identificação e priorização dos grupos com acesso desfavorável aos serviços são fundamentais no planejamento da prestação de cuidados odontológicos a essa população. Abstract Introduction the search for dental care is an important parameter to determine how individuals understand the oral health. Objective to evaluate the use of dental services and associated factors in cancer patients in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Material and method a cross-sectional study carried out with a sample of 441 adult patients attending a voluntary association to support cancer patients in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The outcome was assessed through self-report of dental appointments in the last year. Independent variables included socioeconomic status, general and cancer-related health, oral health, and dental care. The associations between the outcome and the independent variables were tested using bivariate and multiple logistic regression, and the results were expressed as odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). Result the prevalence of dental appointments in the last year was 33.3%. Individuals who have between four and seven (OR: 1.80; 95%CI: 1.02-3.18) and those who have eight or more years of schooling (OR: 3.20; 95%CI: 1.07-9 .60) had greater, whereas, the edentulous (OR: 0.44; 95%CI: 0.21-0.92) had less odds to have had a dental appointment in the last year, independently of socioeconomic status, general health and oral health conditions. Conclusion recent dental care was uncommon among cancer patients. Furthermore, there were inequalities related to schooling and the number of remaining teeth in the use of services. The identification and prioritization of groups with unfavorable access to services are fundamental in planning the provision of dental care to this population.

Aim To assess edentulism-free life expectancy (EFLE) and the related inequalities by sex and schooling among older Brazilian adults from 2006 to 2016. Background Tooth loss is related to shortened longevity and unhealthy life expectancy in old age. Materials and methods The outcome of the study was EFLE, assessed by age, sex and schooling. EFLE was estimated using the Sullivan method, considering the years and proportion of remaining life and the prevalence of edentulism-assessed in the Health, Well-being, and Aging cohort study, as well as the official mortality data for adults aged 60 years or older living in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Results EFLE increased from 10.9 (95% CI: 10.4-11.5) to 13.8 (95% CI: 13.2-14.5) years, considering data from 2006 to 2016, among 60-year-old individuals. In relative terms, these individuals expected to live 50.7% (95% CI: 48.1-53.2) of their remaining life free of edentulism in 2006, while this expectation was 62.8% (95% CI: 60.0-65.6) in 2016. Within both years, women and the less educated had lower EFLE than men and the higher educated. Conclusion EFLE increased from 2006 to 2016. However, inequalities concerning sex and education remained significant, thereby highlighting the need to continuously address inequalities in tooth loss throughout life to contribute to a healthy ageing.

We assessed the association between edentulism and all–cause mortality among community–dwelling older adults from São Paulo, Brazil, from 2006 to 2017. This prospective cohort study used data from the Health, Well–being and Aging Study (SABE, Portuguese acronym). Edentulism was evaluated by means of clinical oral examination and all–cause mortality data were obtained from state official records. Covariates included socioeconomic factors (age, sex, and schooling); health behavior (smoking, alcohol intake, and physical activity); dental care (prostheses use); general health (multimorbidity); and nutritional status (underweight). Kaplan–Meier survival curves were stratified by edentulism and compared using the log–rank test. Cox proportional hazards model was applied to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) for the association between edentulism and mortality after adjusting for covariates. The study sample included 1,687 participants (age, 60–102 years; edentulous: 47.2%). In the 11 years of follow–up, we analyzed 10,494 person–years and 566 deaths. In bivariate analysis, edentulous older adults were found to be at a higher risk of dying from all causes than the dentate participants (HR: 1.81; 95%CI: 1.53–2.15). After sequential adjustment for socioeconomic factors, health behavior, dental care, general health, and nutritional status, this association was attenuated, but remained significant (HR: 1.34; 95%CI: 1.10–1.63). In conclusion, edentulism is a significant predictor of all–cause mortality among older adults.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a relação entre a percepção sobre os serviços odontológicos e a saúde bucal numa população de hipertensos e diabéticos adscritos à Estratégia Saúde da Família em Alfenas, MG, Brasil. Estudo domiciliar, descritivo-analítico, com amostra randomizada e estratificada, composta por 186 sujeitos. Aplicaram-se os índices: Dentes Cariados, Perdidos e Obturados (CPOD); Índice de Dentes Funcionais (FS-T); Índice de Cuidados Odontológicos (ICO); Avaliação do uso e necessidade de próteses; Questionário de Avaliação da Saúde Bucal na Atenção Primária (ASBAP-usuário). Observou-se predomínio de mulheres (67,74%), hipertensos não diabéticos (58,60%) e idosos (52,69%) idade média de 64,26 (± 12,22) anos. Registrou-se CPOD = 27,00 (± 6,24); FS-T=8,94 (± 10,28); ICO=19,42 (± 26,80); 39,78% de uso de próteses parciais, 56,45% de próteses totais e necessidades de 36,02% de próteses parciais e 28,49% de próteses totais. No ASBAP-usuário, prevaleceram avaliações positivas dos serviços. A Saúde Bucal mostrou-se melhor entre os sujeitos que relataram bom vínculo com o dentista e pior entre os que consideraram bons os equipamentos utilizados nos Serviços, sendo ainda pontos críticos: acesso, rapidez e comunicação profissional-paciente. We noticed a total DMFT of 27.00 (± 6.24); FS-T = 8.94 (± 10.28); DCI = 19.42 (± 26.80); 39.78% of partial dentures usage, 56.45% of total prosthesis usage with necessity of 36.02% of partial dentures and 28.49% of total prosthesis. In the OHPCA questionnaire, positive assessments of services were prevalent. Oral Health proved to be best among those individuals who reported good relationship with their dentists and worse among those individuals who considered as good the equipment used in the services. The critical aspects were: access, speed and professional-patient communication.

This research aimed to assess the oral health related to quality of life among hypertensive and diabetic patients in the city of Alfenas, Brazil. This was a domiciliary-based, descriptive-analytical, cross-sectional research with a random, systematic sample stratified by the Family Health Team, consisting of 218 individuals. The following indexes were applied: DMFT, T-Health, FS-T, SiC index, use and need of prosthesis and OHIP-14. Most of the patients (56.42%) had only high blood pressure, were females (67.43%), with an average age of 64.83 (±11.99) years old, varying between 35 and 93 years old. No significant differences on the variables between hypertensives, diabetics and hypertensive-diabetics were noticed. The following data was registered: DMFT=27.16 (± 6.15), with 22.94 (± 10.46) of missing teeth; T-Health=5.23 (± 6.52); FS-T=8.53 (± 10.12) and SiC=32 (± 0.00). 85.78% of the individuals were using prosthesis (58.72% Dentures) and 61.01% needed prostheses (58.26% in the jaw).The correlations between OHIP-14 (5.37 [± 4.95]) and oral health evidenced the increase in the number of teeth affecting psychological dimensions, besides the use and need of prostheses were associated to physical and social impacts (p0.05). We concluded that edentulism, use and need of prostheses affected quality of life in hypertensive and diabetic patients concerning psychological, physical and social aspects.O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a qualidade de vida relacionada às condições clínicas de saúde bucal entre hipertensos e diabéticos de Alfenas, MG, Brasil. Estudo domiciliar, descritivo-analítico, transversal, com amostra randomizada, sistemática, estratificada por Equipe Saúde da Família, composta por 218 sujeitos. Aplicou-se os índices CPOD, T-Health, FS-T, SiC index, uso e necessidade de próteses e OHIP-14. A maioria dos sujeitos (56,42%) apresenta apenas Hipertensão Arterial, é do sexo feminino (67,43%), com idade média de 64,83 (± 11,99), variando entre 35 e 93 anos. Não se observou diferenças significativas para as variáveis entre hipertensos, diabéticos e hipertensos-diabéticos. Registrou-se CPOD = 27,16 (± 6,15), com 22,94 (± 10,46) dentes perdidos; T-Health = 5,23 (± 6,52); FS-T = 8,53 (± 10,12) e SiC = 32 (± 0,00). Dos sujeitos, 85,78% usavam próteses (58,72% Prótese Total) e 61,01% necessitavam das mesmas (58,26% no arco inferior). As correlações entre OHIP-14 (5,37 [± 4,95]) e condições clínicas evidenciaram a presença de dentes afetando dimensões psicológicas, além de uso e necessidade de próteses associadas a impactos físicos e sociais (p0,05). Concluiu-se que edentulismo, uso e necessidade de próteses afetaram a qualidade de vida de hipertensos e diabéticos em aspectos psicológicos, físicos e sociais.
