The aim of the study was to evaluate the levels of lactate, pro-, macro-, and total glycogen in two different muscles, and meat quality traits (pH, colour, drip loss, cooking loss and shear force) across three different pig breeds, in the presence and absence of physical short-term pre-slaughter stress. Twenty-eight halothane-free pigs of the Italian Large White, Duroc and Pietrain breeds were subjected to different kinds of pre-slaughter handling: rough (RPH) or gentle (GPH). Before stunning, RPH group of pigs were subjected to a fast driving supported by the use of electric prods, whereas GPH group pigs were driven slowly without electric prods. Handling procedure influenced the contents of macroglycogen, lactate and pH at 45-min post-mortem with no effect on meat quality traits at 24 and 72 h post-mortem. Irrespective of the handling procedure, breed significantly affected L* and b* colour coordinates, Pietrain pigs showing slightly paler meat.

Dog bites are the third most common cause of absenteeism among postal workers of the Brazilian National Postal Service in Southern Brazil, with an average off-work time of approximately two days for each biting episode. The objective of this study was to evaluate the neighborhood characteristics involving dog bites that occurred during work time in postal workers, its impact on work and consequent preventive alternatives. A descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study was designed for all Curitiba postal workers. Data were descriptively analyzed and the hypothesis of correlation between median monthly income, population density and occurrence of dog bites was tested. A total of 34.9% of the postal workers answered the questionnaire and 64.6% of them had been bitten while working. The odds of bites occurring in a neighborhood increase by 1.035 times for every increase in one unit in the population density and decrease by 0.998 times for every increase of US$ 1.00 in the neighborhood median monthly income of the head of the family. The occurrence of dog bites among postal workers in Curitiba is related to income and population density and prevention strategies should address mailbox position and adequate fencing to provide protection for postal workers.Mordidas de cães são a terceira causa mais frequente de absenteísmo ao trabalho em carteiros do Correio no sul do Brasil, com uma média de dois dias de ausência a cada episódio de mordida. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar as características de bairros onde ocorreram mordidas de cães em carteiros durante o período de serviço, o impacto disto no trabalho e desenvolver alternativas preventivas. Um corte-transversal descritivo e analítico foi desenhado e aplicado a todos os carteiros de Curitiba. Os dados foram analisados de forma descritiva e foi testada a hipótese de que renda mediana mensal, densidade populacional e ocorrência de mordidas em cada bairro estão correlacionadas. Um total de 34,9% dos carteiros de Curitiba respondeu ao questionário e 64,6% deles já haviam sido mordidos enquanto trabalhavam. A chance de ocorrerem mordidas em um bairro aumenta em 1,035 vezes a cada aumento em uma unidade na densidade populacional e diminui 0,998 vezes para cada aumento de US$ 1,00 na renda mediana mensal do chefe de família. A ocorrência de mordidas de cães em carteiros de Curitiba está correlacionada com renda e densidade populacional. Estratégias de prevenção devem visar um adequado posicionamento da caixa de correio e a instalação de cercas adequadas para proteger os carteiros.

This study deals with the seasonal distribution of Al, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Na, Pb and Zn and water soluble ions (Cl-, PO4(3-), NO3-, SO4(2-), HCOO-, CH3COO-, oxalate, succinate, Na+, NH4+, K+, Mg2+ and Ca2+) found in PM10 samples (particulate matter less than 10 mm in diameter) São Paulo City, Brazil, (April 2003-May 2004). Higher atmospheric levels were found for SO4(2-), NO3-, Cl- and PO4(3-) while the main organic anions were oxalate and formate. Atmospheric levels for elements were: Fe > Al > Ca > K > Na > Mg > Zn > Cu > Pb. Some sources were predominant for some species: (i) fuel burning and/or biomass burning (NO3-, HCOO-, C2O4(2-), K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Fe, Pb, Zn, Al, Ca, K and Mg), (ii) gas-to-particle conversion (SO4(2-) and NH4+) and (iii) sea salt spray (Cl-, Na+ and Na). Neste trabalho, as distribuições sazonais de Al, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Na, Pb, Zn e de íons majoritários (Cl-, PO4(3-), NO3-, SO4(2-), HCOO-, CH3COO-, oxalato, succinato, Na+, NH4+, K+, Mg2+ e Ca2+) foram estudadas na fração PM10 (material particulado menor que 10 mm) na cidade de São Paulo (abril de 2003 a maio de 2004). Os níveis atmosféricos mais elevados foram encontrados para os íons inorgânicos SO4(2-), NO3-, Cl- e PO4(3-), e dentre os íons orgânicos, oxalato e formiato. Os níveis atmosféricos para elementos foram: Fe > Al > Ca > K > at > Mg > Zn > Cu > Pb. As fontes relevantes foram: (i) queima de combustíveis e/ou queima de biomassa (NO3-, HCOO-, C2O4(2-), K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Fe, Pb, Zn, Al, Ca, K e Mg), (ii) conversão gás-partícula (SO4(2-) e NH4+) e (iii) spray marinho (Cl-, Na+ e Na).

In this work the formation of multilayers composed by carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), chitosane and bovine serum albumin (BSA) was studied by ellipsometry. First, the adsorption behavior of carboxymethylcellulose onto amino-terminated surfaces was investigated as a function of molecular weight and average degree of substitution of CMC. The influence of these parameters on the adsorbed amount of CMC onto amino-terminated substrates was absent. However, the interaction of CMC covered surfaces with chitosane and BSA was favored when the average degree of substitution of CMC was increased. The adsorption of BSA onto the polysaccharide systems was studied as a function of pH. At the isoelectric point of BSA a maximum in the adsorbed amount was found.
