Na3Bi was the first experimentally verified topological Dirac semimetal (TDS), and is a 3D analogue of graphene hosting relativistic Dirac fermions. Its unconventional momentum-energy relationship is interesting from a fundamental perspective, yielding exciting physical properties such as chiral charge carriers, the chiral anomaly, and weak anti-localization. It also shows promise for realising topological electronic devices such as topological transistors. In this review, an overview of the substantial progress achieved in the last few years on Na3Bi is presented, with a focus on technologically relevant large-area thin films synthesised via molecular beam epitaxy. Key theoretical aspects underpinning the unique electronic properties of Na3Bi are introduced. Next, the growth process on different substrates is reviewed. Spectroscopic and microscopic features are illustrated, and an analysis of semi-classical and quantum transport phenomena in different doping regimes is provided. The emergent properties arising from confinement in two dimensions, including thickness-dependent and electric-field driven topological phase transitions, are addressed, with an outlook towards current challenges and expected future progress.

We experimentally measure the band dispersions of topological Dirac semimetal Na3Bi using Fourier-transform scanning tunneling spectroscopy to image quasiparticle interference on the (001) surface of molecular-beam epitaxy-grown Na3Bi thin films. We find that the velocities for the lowest-lying conduction and valencebands are 1.6x10^6 m/s and 4.2x10^5 m/s respectively, significantly higher than previous theoreticalpredictions. We compare the experimental band dispersions to the theoretical band structures calculated usingan increasing hierarchy of approximations of self-energy corrections due to interactions: generalized gradientapproximation (GGA), meta-GGA, Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof exchange-correlation functional (HSE06), and GW methods. We find that density functional theory methods generally underestimate the electron velocities. However, we find significantly improved agreement with an increasingly sophisticated description of the exchange and interaction potential, culminating in reasonable agreement with experiments obtained by the GW method. The results indicate that exchange-correlation effects are important in determining the electronicstructure of this Na3Bi, and are likely the origin of the high velocity. The electron velocity is consistent withrecent experiments on ultrathin Na3Bi and also may explain the ultrahigh carrier mobility observed in heavilyelectron-doped Na3Bi.

We study the dynamics of a soliton-impurity system modeled in terms of a binary Bose-Einstein condensate. This is achieved by `switching off' one of the two self-interaction scattering lengths, giving a two component system where the second component is trapped entirely by the presence of the first component. It is shown that this system possesses rich dynamics, including the identification of unusual `weak' dimers that appear close to the zero inter-component scattering length. It is further found that this system supports quasi-stable trimers in regimes where the equivalent single-component gas does not, which is attributed to the presence of the impurity atoms which can dynamically tunnel between the solitons, and maintain the required phase differences that support the trimer state., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

We show how access to sufficiently flexible trapping potentials could be exploited in the generation of three-dimensional atomic bright matter-wave solitons. Our proposal provides a route towards producing bright solitonic states with good fidelity, in contrast to, for example, a non-adiabatic sweeping of an applied magnetic field through a Feshbach resonance., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We study interactions between bright matter-wave solitons which acquire chiral transport dynamics due to an optically-induced density-dependent gauge potential. Through numerical simulations, we find that the collision dynamics feature several non-integrable phenomena, from inelastic collisions including population transfer and radiation losses to short-lived bound states and soliton fission. An effective quasi-particle model for the interaction between the solitons is derived by means of a variational approximation, which demonstrates that the inelastic nature of the collision arises from a coupling of the gauge field to velocities of the solitons. In addition, we derive a set of interaction potentials which show that the influence of the gauge field appears as a short-range potential, that can give rise to both attractive and repulsive interactions., Comment: Updated with minor corrections and additional references. Thanks to their immense purity and controllability, dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates are an exemplar for studying fundamental non-local nonlinear physics. Here we show that a family of fundamental nonlinear waves - the dark solitons - are supported in trapped quasi-one-dimensional dipolar condensates and within reach of current experiments. Remarkably, the oscillation frequency of the soliton is strongly dependent on the atomic interactions, in stark contrast to the non-dipolar case. The failure of a particle analogy, so successful for dark solitons in general, to account for this behaviour implies that these structures are inherently extended and non-particle-like. These highly-sensitive waves may act as mesoscopic probes of the underlying quantum matter field., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We present a comprehensive analysis of the form and interaction of dipolar bright solitons across the full parameter space afforded by dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates, revealing the rich behaviour introduced by the non-local nonlinearity. Working within an effective one-dimensional description, we map out the existence of the soliton solutions and show three collisional regimes: free collisions, bound state formation and soliton fusion. Finally, we examine the solitons in their full three-dimensional form through a variational approach; along with regimes of instability to collapse and runaway expansion, we identify regimes of stability which are accessible to current experiments., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

We study the stability, form and interaction of single and multiple dark solitons in quasi-one-dimensional dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates. The solitons are found numerically as stationary solutions in the moving frame of a non-local Gross Pitaevskii equation, and characterized as a function of the key experimental parameters, namely the ratio of the dipolar atomic interactions to the van der Waals interactions, the polarization angle and the condensate width. The solutions and their integrals of motion are strongly affected by the phonon and roton instabilities of the system. Dipolar matter-wave dark solitons propagate without dispersion, and collide elastically away from these instabilities, with the dipolar interactions contributing an additional repulsion or attraction to the soliton-soliton interaction. We study the family of static and moving dark solitons in quasi-one-dimensional dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates, exploring their modified form and interactions. The density dip of the soliton acts as a giant anti-dipole which adds a non-local contribution to the conventional local soliton-soliton interaction. We map out the stability diagram as a function of the strength and polarization direction of the atomic dipoles, identifying both roton and phonon instabilities. Away from these instabilities, the solitons collide elastically. Varying the polarization direction relative to the condensate axis enables tuning of this non-local interaction between repulsive and attractive; the latter case supports unusual dark soliton bound states. Remarkably, these bound states are themselves shown to behave like solitons, emerging unscathed from collisions with each other., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We derive a non-equilibrium finite-temperature kinetic theory for a binary mixture of two interacting atomic Bose-Einstein condensates and use it to explore the degree of hydrodynamicity attainable in realistic experimental geometries. Based on the standard separation of timescale argument of kinetic theory, the dynamics of the condensates of the multi-component system are shown to be described by dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equations, self-consistently coupled to corresponding Quantum Boltzmann equations for the non-condensate atoms: on top of the usual mean field contributions, our scheme identifies a total of eight distinct collisional processes, whose dynamical interplay is expected to be responsible for the systems equilibration. In order to provide their first characterization, we perform a detailed numerical analysis of the role of trap frequency and geometry on collisional rates for experimentally accessible mixtures of $^{87}$Rb-$^{41}$K and $^{87}$Rb-$^{85}$Rb, discussing the extent to which the system may approach the hydrodynamic regime with regard to some of those processes, as a guide for future experimental investigations of ultracold Bose gas mixtures., Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures

We construct a fully self-consistent non-equilibrium theory for the dynamics of two interacting finite-temperature atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. The condensates are described by dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equations, coupled to quantum Boltzmann equations for the thermal atoms. The density-density interactions between atoms in different components facilitate a number of transport processes of relevance to sympathetic cooling: in particular, identification of an inter-component scattering process associated with collisional "exchange" of condensed and thermal atoms between the components, is found numerically to dominate close to equilibrium, for both realistic miscible and immiscible trapped atomic $^{87}$Rb-$^{41}$K and $^{87}$Rb-$^{85}$Rb condensate mixtures., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We study the dynamics of a one-dimensional spin-orbit coupled Schrodinger particle with two internal components moving in a random potential. We show that this model can be implemented by the interaction of cold atoms with external lasers and additional Zeeman and Stark shifts. By direct numerical simulations a crossover from an exponential Anderson-type localization to an anomalous power-law behavior of the intensity correlation is found when the spin-orbit coupling becomes large. The power-law behavior is connected to a Dyson singularity in the density of states emerging at zero energy when the system approaches the quasi-relativistic limit of the random mass Dirac model. We discuss conditions under which the crossover is observable in an experiment with ultracold atoms and construct explicitly the zero-energy state, thus proving its existence under proper conditions., Comment: 4 pages and 4 figures
