Abstract

The efficacy of a porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV-2) vaccine was tested in pigs vaccinated at three or six weeks of age. A total of 1106 weaned pigs were randomly allocated to one of three treatment groups: vaccinated at three weeks of age, vaccinated at six weeks of age, or not vaccinated. Each pig was weighed at three, 10 and 22 weeks of age, and 48 pigs selected at random from each treatment group were serially blood sampled at three, six, 10, 14, 18 and 22 weeks of age. The mean weight of the vaccinated pigs was 6·1 kg heavier at 22 weeks than the unvaccinated pigs. The combined mortality and cull rates of the unvaccinated pigs during the growing/finishing period was 14·1 per cent compared with 3·6 per cent and 3·1 per cent for the pigs vaccinated at three weeks and six weeks, respectively. The vaccinated pigs also had a significantly higher mean daily weight gain and a smaller load of humoral PCV-2 than the unvaccinated pigs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

44. The Effects of Begg Treatment on the Lower Labial Segment in Class II Cases

Abstract

A report is presented on eleven Class II cases which had been treated by the Begg technique. The cases were analysed from 1 to 3·5 years following retention, with particular emphasis being placed on changes to the lower labial segment. Where relevant, comparisons are made with growth study standards. The use of the lower incisor—Mandibular planes angle (IMPA) is described and criticized and an alternative linear measurement is used to describe changes in the sagittal position of the lower incisors. The results indicate that despite widely held views, it is possible to obtain stable results, following radical alteration to the lower incisor position. There was a trend towards an overall lingual movement of lower incisor apices.

45. Cephalometric Parameters in Hypopituitary Patients*

Abstract

The lateral cephalograms of 20 hypopituitary patients were analysed. The cases were untreated at the time, and covered an age range of 6–15 years. The linear and angular measurements were compared with those of growth study controls, and were tested for significance. The results confirm the facial immaturity of Patients with a deficiency of growth hormone and indicate that, whilst all linear parameters are reduced, maxillary length is less retarded than the others. There were differences amongst the angular comparisons, the gonial angle being particularly increased.
