The aim is to describe the development of a novel interdisciplinary graduate school, using the Swedish National Graduate School for Competitive Science on Ageing and Health (SWEAH) as a case example. We explore doctoral students’ perceptions of being part of SWEAH and provide implications for practice. Written self-reports reflecting 78 students’ experiences and perceptions were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that affiliation with SWEAH is highly valued. The students emphasized the tailored courses and learning activities and reported that it was instrumental in deepening their knowledge and broadening their research perspectives. The findings demonstrate how students navigate between disciplinary and interdisciplinary contexts and become enculturated with intellectual mindset and understanding of the importance of network building. The graduate school adds an interdisciplinary layer of learning, influenced by peers and researchers, and demonstrates the importance of community building within interdisciplinary environments and how it can be achieved., Validerad;2024;Nivå 2;2024-04-09 (signyg);Full text license: CC BY

Bakgrund: Beslut och metoder inom hälso- och sjukvården bygger på vetenskaplig grund vilket förutsätter en forskningsbas. Inom detta område är svensk vetenskaplig produktion och tillämpning relativt stark, däremot ser vi inte motsvarande styrka i kunskapsbasen för utbildningsuppdraget. I diskussionen om utbildningens forskningsförankring är det vanligtvis innehållet som avses eller kontakt med aktiva forskare, mer sällan hur utbildningen bör utformas för att stödja lärande eller förutsättningarna för lärarskicklighet. Det saknas inte forskning inom området, på den internationella arenan ser vi en växande högskolepedagogisk forskningsproduktion med medicin och hälsa som kontext, sk. medicinsk pedagogik. Däremot finns anledning att uppmärksamma från vilken kontext forskningen kommer och förutsättningarna att omsätta den till kvalitet och innovation i utbildningarna. Merparten av fältets forskningsproduktion kommer från USA, UK, Canada och Australien (Thomas, 2019). Den internationella prägeln på kunskapsbasen är inte alltid optimal för implementering i svenska förhållanden då resultaten och slutsatser är dragna från en kontext som i flera avseenden skiljer sig från vår. Förutom tillgång till forskning behövs möjligheter att ta del av den och omsätta till godo för utbildningen. Europeiska lärare anser inte att ny forskning når deras arbetsgrupper i någon hög utsträckning (Thomas et al., 2019). Medicinskt skolade lärare är ofta ovana vid den högskolepedagogiska forskningsgenren som evidensgrund (Kneebone, 2002). Nederländerna, som är mer befolkat än Sverige men har snarligt antal läkarutbildningar samt likartade förhållanden för högre utbildning, har satsat på en medicinpedagogisk utveckling som givit avtryck i fältet. Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka svensk forskningsproduktion inom det medicinpedagogiska området samt att föreslå en förstärkning av förutsättningar för denna produktion och dess tillämpning i utbildningar för medicin och hälsa. Background After completing university education, biomedical laboratory scientists work in clinical laboratories, in biomedical research laboratories, in biotech, and in pharmaceutical companies. Laboratory diagnostics have undergone rapid development over the recent years, with the pace showing no signs of abatement. This rapid development challenges the competence of the staff and will most certainly influence the education of future staff. This study aimed to examine what was considered the necessary competencies needed to pursue a career as a biomedical laboratory scientist. Methods A modified Delphi technique was used, with the panel of experts expressing their views in a series of three questionnaire. Consensus was defined as the point which 75 % or more of the panel participants agreed that a particular competency was necessary. Results The study highlights the perceived importance of mostly generic competencies that relate to quality, quality assurance, and accuracy, as well as different aspects of safety, respect, trustworthiness (towards patients/clients and colleagues), and communication skills. The results also stress the significance of self-awareness and professionality. Conclusions We identified important competencies for biomedical laboratory scientists. Together with complementary information from other sources, i.e., guidelines, laws, and scientific publications, the competencies identified can be used as learning outcomes in a competency-based education to provide students with all the competencies needed to work as professional biomedical laboratory scientists.

The aim of this article is to describe and discuss how PBL tutor training is currently arranged at four universities in Sweden: Linköping University, Lund Medical Faculty, Uppsala Medical School and Örebro School of Medicine. Moreover, we seek to analyse how the content and format of the tutor training courses correspond to the desired skills and competencies for PBL tutors described in the literature. We draw especially on work coming out of three pioneering universities for PBL: McMaster University, Canada; Maastricht University, The Netherlands; and Linköping University, Sweden. One aim has been to construct a framework for analysis that uses categories specifying the knowledge base, capabilities and skills to support students’ learning processes which characterise the full-fledged PBL tutor. For this framework, we have used the following categories: Knowledge of PBL and pedagogical theories, Personal traits, Student-centeredness, Ability to handle group processes, and Subject knowledge. We collected descriptions of the course design and content from the four universities, and assessed to what extent these categories were represented within the courses. Our results show that all categories inform the course content at all four universities, though the design varies between courses. In summary, we show that the four PBL tutor training courses are all designed to enable participants to experience PBL first-hand both as members of a tutorial group and as tutors. They all also include a theoretical base and offer opportunities for discussion and reflection with peers; however, there are some differences in design between the courses. Pedagogiska utvecklingsenheter är organiserade på olika sätt och utsatta för täta omorganisationeroch studien syftar till att klargöra vilka överväganden som kan ligga till grund förenheternas uppdrag och organisation. Tolv universitet i Sverige har kartlagts genom granskningav hemsidor, telefonintervjuer med ansvariga för enheterna samt tre rundabordssamtalvid konferenser. Resultatet visar att i uppdraget ingår typiskt att arrangera högskolepedagogiskutbildning, erbjuda konsultativt högskolepedagogiskt utvecklingsstöd och främja universitetspedagogiskterfarenhetsutbyte. Det fanns inga samband mellan uppdrag och organisationsform.Informanterna såg det som ett problem att forskning inte ingick i uppdraget och attorganisation och finansiering förhindrade forskning. Organisatoriska konsekvenser av krav påforskningsanknytning av högskolepedagogisk utbildning är att pedagogiska enheter kommeratt vara fristående centrumbildningar, del av en institution eller utgöra en egen institution.

Objective – The role of the academic librarian has become increasingly educative in nature. In this study, the critical friend method was introduced among teaching librarians in an academic setting of medicine and health sciences to ascertain whether this approach could be implemented for feedback on teaching of these librarians as part of their professional development. Methods – We used a single intrinsic case study. Seven teaching librarians and one educator from the faculty of medicine participated, and they all provided and received feedback. These eight teachers worked in pairs, and each of them gave at least one lecture or seminar during the study period. The performance of one teacher and the associated classroom activities were observed by the critical friend and then evaluated and discussed. The outcome and effects of critical friendship were assessed by use of a questionnaire. Results – The present results suggest that use of the critical friend method among teaching academic librarians can have a positive impact by achieving the following: strengthening shared values concerning teaching issues; promoting self-reflection, which can improve teaching; facilitating communication with colleagues; and reducing the sense of “loneliness” in teaching. This conclusion is also supported by the findings of previous studies. Conclusion – The critical friend method described in this study can easily be implemented and developed among teaching librarians, provided that there is support from the organization. This will benefit the individual teaching librarian, as well as the organization at large.

Background: The Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM) has been used in various studies to evaluate the educational environment. However, psychometric evaluations of the instrument seem sparse, for all known versions of the instrument. Aim: The aim was to psychometrically evaluate the Swedish version of the DREEM instrument. Method: A total of 503 students (undergraduate medicine), aged 19-46 years, in semesters 2, 6 and 10 were included in the study. Validity was evaluated through analysis of construct validity and reliability. Results: The instrument had in general both acceptable validity and reliability. Due to a rather poor model fit in the confirmatory factor analysis, an explorative factor analysis was also employed which suggested a new five-factor solution for the instrument. Conclusions: The Swedish version of the DREEM instrument is shown to be valid and reliable, except for the factor structure. The new five-factor solution found in this study is not proven to be a superior measurement model compared with the original, but could be seen as an alternative model to the original, where the strong and weak areas are somewhat more easily identified.

Background: Portfolios are highlighted as potential assessment tools for professional competence. Although students' self-reflections are considered to be central in the portfolio, the content of reflections in practice-based portfolios is seldom analysed. Aim: To investigate whether students' reflections include sufficient dimensions of professional competence, notwithstanding a standardized portfolio format, and to evaluate students' satisfaction with the portfolio. Methods: Thirty-five voluntary final-year medical students piloted a standardized portfolio in a general practice (GP) attachment at Lund University, Sweden. Students' portfolio reflections were based upon documentary evidence from practice, and aimed to demonstrate students' learning. The reflections were qualitatively analysed, using a framework approach. Students' evaluations of the portfolio were subjected to quantitative and qualitative analysis. Results: Among professional issues, an integration of cognitive, affective and practical dimensions in clinical practice was provided by students' reflections. The findings suggested an emphasis on affective issues, particularly on self-awareness of feelings, attitudes and concerns. In addition, ethical problems, clinical reasoning strategies and future communication skills training were subjects of several reflective commentaries. Students' reflections on their consultation skills demonstrated their endeavour to achieve structure in the medical interview by negotiation of an agenda for the consultation, keeping the interview on track, and using internal summarizing. The importance of active listening and exploration of patient's perspective was also emphasized. In students' case summaries, illustrating characteristic attributes of GP, the dominating theme was 'patient-centred care', including the patient-doctor relationship, holistic modelling and longitudinal continuity. Students were satisfied with the portfolio, but improved instructions were needed.
