Search

The First Large Absorption Survey in HI (FLASH) is a large-area radio survey for neutral hydrogen in the redshift range 0.41$, and appear to be a mixture of intervening and associated systems. The overall detection rate for HI absorption lines in the Pilot Surveys (0.3 to 0.5 lines per ASKAP field) is a factor of two below the expected value. There are several possible reasons for this, but one likely factor is the presence of a range of spectral-line artefacts in the Pilot Survey data that have now been mitigated and are not expected to recur in the full FLASH survey. We present a sample of over 100 highly X-ray luminous galaxy clusters at $z\sim$ 0.5-0.9, discovered by the extended Massive Cluster Survey (eMACS) in ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) data. Follow-up observations of a subset at higher resolution and greater depth with the Chandra X-ray Observatory are used to map the gaseous intra-cluster medium, while strong-gravitational-lensing features identified in Hubble Space Telescope imaging allow us to constrain the total mass distribution. We present evidence of the exceptional gravitational-lensing power of these massive systems, search for substructure along the line of sight by mapping the radial velocities of cluster members obtained through extensive ground-based spectroscopy, and identify dramatic cases of galaxy evolution in high-density cluster environments. The available observations of the eMACS sample presented here provide a wealth of insights into the properties of very massive clusters ($\gtrsim 10^{15} M_\odot$) at $z > 0.5$, which act as powerful lenses to study galaxies in the very distant Universe. We also discuss the evolutionary state, galaxy population, and large-scale environment of eMACS clusters and release to the community all data and science products to further the understanding of the first generation of truly massive clusters to have formed in the Universe., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS, comments welcome! Radio observations of a few cool-core galaxy clusters have revealed the presence of diffuse emission on cluster scales, similar to what was found in merging clusters in the form of radio halos. These sources might suggest that a minor merger, while not sufficiently energetic to disrupt the cool core, could still trigger particle acceleration in the intracluster medium on scales of hundreds of kpc. We observed with LOFAR at 144 MHz a sample of twelve cool-core galaxy clusters presenting some level of dynamical disturbances, according to X-ray data. We also performed a systematic search of cold fronts in these clusters, re-analysing archival Chandra data. The clusters PSZ1G139.61+24, A1068 (new detection), MS 1455.0+2232, and RX J1720.1+2638 present diffuse radio emission on a cluster scale. This emission is characterised by a double component: a central mini-halo confined by cold fronts and diffuse emission on larger scales, whose radio power at 144 MHz is comparable to that of radio halos detected in merging systems. The cold fronts in A1068 are a new detection. We also found a candidate plasma depletion layer in this cluster. No sloshing features are found in the other eight clusters. Two of them present a mini-halo, with diffuse radio emission confined to the cluster core. We also found a new candidate mini-halo. Whereas, for the remaining five clusters, we did not detect halo-like emission. For clusters without cluster-scale halos, we derived upper limits to the radio halo power. We found that cluster-scale diffuse radio emission is not present in all cool-core clusters when observed at a low frequency, but it is correlated to the presence of cold fronts. This morphology requires a specific configuration of the merger and so it puts some constraints on the turbulence, which deserves to be investigated in the future with theoretical works., Comment: 34 pages, 30 figures. We present new ALMA observations of CO, CN, CS, HCN and HCO$^{+}$ absorption seen against the bright and compact radio continuum sources of eight massive galaxies. Combined with archival observations, they reveal two distinct populations of molecular clouds, which we identify by combining CO emission and absorption profiles to unambiguously reveal each cloud's direction of motion and likely location. In galaxy disks, we see clouds with low velocity dispersions, low line of sight velocities and a lack of any systemic inflow or outflow. In galactic cores, we find high velocity dispersion clouds inflowing at up to 550 km/s. This provides observational evidence in favour of cold accretion onto galactic centres, which likely contributes to the fuelling of active galactic nuclei. We also see a wide range in the CO(2-1)/CO(1-0) ratios of the absorption lines. This is likely the combined effect of hierarchical substructure within the molecular clouds and continuum sources which vary in size with frequency., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

Ultra-steep spectrum (USS) radio sources with complex filamentary morphologies are a poorly understood subclass of diffuse radio source found in galaxy clusters. They are characterised by power law spectra with spectral indices less than -1.5, and are typically located in merging clusters. We present X-ray and radio observations of the galaxy cluster A272, containing a USS diffuse radio source. The system is an ongoing major cluster merger with an extended region of bright X-ray emission south of the core. Surface brightness analysis yields a $3\sigma$ detection of a merger shock front in this region. We obtain shock Mach numbers $M_\rho = 1.20 \pm 0.09$ and $M_T = 1.7 \pm 0.3$ from the density and temperature jumps, respectively. Optical data reveals that the system is a merger between a northern cool core cluster and a southern non-cool core cluster. We find that the USS source, with spectral index $\alpha^{\text{74 MHz}}_{\text{1.4 GHz}} = -1.9 \pm 0.1$, is located in the bright southern region. Radio observations show that the source has a double-lobed structure with complex filaments, and is centred on the brightest cluster galaxy of the southern subcluster. We provide two suggestions for the origin of this source; the first posits the source as an AGN relic that has been re-energised by the passing of a merger shock front, while the second interprets the complex structure as the result of two overlapping AGN radio outbursts. We present a study of molecular gas, traced via CO (3-2) from ALMA data, of four z< 0.2, `radio quiet', type 2 quasars (log [L(bol)/(erg/s)] = 45.3 - 46.2; log [L(1.4 GHz)/(W/Hz)] = 23.7 - 24.3). Targets were selected to have extended radio lobes (>= 10 kpc), and compact, moderate-power jets (1 - 10 kpc; log [Pjet/(erg/s)]= 43.2 - 43.7). All targets show evidence of central molecular outflows, or injected turbulence, within the gas disks (traced via high-velocity wing components in CO emission-line profiles). The inferred velocities (Vout = 250 - 440 km/s) and spatial scales (0.6 - 1.6 kpc), are consistent with those of other samples of luminous low-redshift AGN. In two targets, we observe extended molecular gas structures beyond the central disks, containing 9 - 53 % of the total molecular gas mass. These structures tend to be elongated, extending from the core, and wrap-around (or along) the radio lobes. Their properties are similar to the molecular gas filaments observed around radio lobes of, mostly `radio loud', Brightest Cluster Galaxies. They have: projected distances of 5 - 13 kpc; bulk velocities of 100 - 340 km/s; velocity dispersion of 30 - 130 km/s; inferred mass outflow rates of 4 - 20 Msolar/yr; and estimated kinetic powers of log [Ekin/(erg/s)]= 40.3 - 41.7. Our observations are consistent with simulations that suggest moderate-power jets can have a direct (but modest) impact on molecular gas on small scales, through direct jet-cloud interactions. Then, on larger scales, jet-cocoons can push gas aside. We present a multi-wavelength study of the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in a sample of the 95 most massive galaxy clusters selected from South Pole Telescope (SPT) Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) survey. Our sample spans a redshift range of 0.3 < z < 1.7, and is complete with optical spectroscopy from various ground-based observatories, as well as ground and space-based imaging from optical, X-ray and radio wavebands. At z~0, previous studies have shown a strong correlation between the presence of a low-entropy cool core and the presence of star-formation and a radio-loud AGN in the central BCG. We show for the first time that a central entropy threshold for star formation persists out to z~1. The central entropy (measured in this work at a radius of 10 kpc) below which clusters harbor star-forming BCGs is found to be as low as $K_\mathrm{10 ~ kpc} = 35 \pm 4$ keV cm$^2$ at z < 0.15 and as high as $K_\mathrm{10 ~ kpc} = 52 \pm 11$ keV cm$^2$ at z~1. We find only marginal (~1$\sigma$) evidence for evolution in this threshold. In contrast, we do not find a similar high-z analog for an entropy threshold for feedback, but instead measure a strong evolution in the fraction of radio-loud BCGs in high-entropy cores as a function of redshift. This could imply that the cooling-feedback loop was not as tight in the past, or that some other fuel source like mergers are fueling the radio sources more often with increasing redshift, making the radio luminosity an increasingly unreliable proxy for radio jet power. We also find that our SZ-based sample is missing a small (~4%) population of the most luminous radio sources ($\nu L_{\nu} > 10^{42}$ erg/s), likely due to radio contamination suppressing the SZ signal with which these clusters are detected., Comment: 22 pages. 10 figures, 2 tables. We present new ALMA CO(2-1) observations tracing $2.2 \times 10^{10}$ solar masses of molecular gas in Abell 2390's brightest cluster galaxy, where half the gas is located in a one-sided plume extending 15 kpc out from the galaxy centre. This molecular gas has a smooth and positive velocity gradient, and is receding 250 km/s faster at its farthest point than at the galaxy centre. To constrain the plume's origin, we analyse our new observations alongside existing X-ray, optical and radio data. We consider the possibility that the plume is a jet-driven outflow with lifting aided by jet inflated X-ray bubbles, is a trail of gas stripped from the main galaxy by ram pressure, or is formed of more recently cooled and infalling gas. The galaxy's star formation and gas cooling rate suggest the lifespan of its molecular gas may be low compared with the plume's age -- which would favour a recently cooled plume. Molecular gas in close proximity to the active galactic nucleus is also indicated by 250 km/s wide CO(2-1) absorption against the radio core, as well as previously detected CO(1-0) and HI absorption. This absorption is optically thick and has a line of sight velocity towards the galaxy centre of 200 km/s. We discuss simple models to explain its origin., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The cluster of galaxies Abell 2146 is undergoing a major merger and is an ideal cluster to study ICM physics, as it has a simple geometry with the merger axis in the plane of the sky, its distance allows us to resolve features across the relevant scales and its temperature lies within Chandra's sensitivity. Gas from the cool core of the subcluster has been partially stripped into a tail of gas, which gives a unique opportunity to look at the survival of such gas and determine the rate of conduction in the ICM. We use deep 2.4 Ms Chandra observations of Abell 2146 to produce a high spatial resolution map of the temperature structure along a plume in the ram-pressure stripped tail, described by a partial cone, which is distinguishable from the hot ambient gas. Previous studies of conduction in the ICM typically rely on estimates of the survival time for key structures, such as cold fronts. Here we use detailed hydrodynamical simulations of Abell 2146 to determine the flow velocities along the stripped plume and measure the timescale of the temperature increase along its length. We find that conduction must be highly suppressed by multiple orders of magnitude compared to the Spitzer rate, as the energy used is about 1% of the energy available. We present the first eight months of data from our secondary target program within the ongoing Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey. Our program uses a mid-infrared and optical colour selection to preferentially target dust-reddened QSOs that would have otherwise been missed by the nominal DESI QSO selection. So far we have obtained optical spectra for 3038 candidates, of which ~70% of the high-quality objects (those with robust redshifts) are visually confirmed to be Type 1 QSOs, consistent with the expected fraction from the main DESI QSO survey. By fitting a dust-reddened blue QSO composite to the QSO spectra, we find they are well-fitted by a normal QSO with up to Av~4 mag of line-of-sight dust extinction. Utilizing radio data from the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) DR2, we identify a striking positive relationship between the amount of line-of-sight dust extinction towards a QSO and the radio detection fraction, that is not driven by radio-loud systems, redshift and/or luminosity effects. This demonstrates an intrinsic connection between dust reddening and the production of radio emission in QSOs, whereby the radio emission is most likely due to low-powered jets or winds/outflows causing shocks in a dusty environment. On the basis of this evidence we suggest that red QSOs may represent a transitional "blow-out" phase in the evolution of QSOs, where winds and outflows evacuate the dust and gas to reveal an unobscured blue QSO., Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures, 6 tables, accepted by MNRAS

Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are a key catalyst of galaxy formation and evolution, leading to an observed correlation between SMBH mass $M_{\rm BH}$ and host galaxy velocity dispersion $\sigma_{\rm e}$. Outside the local Universe, measurements of $M_{\rm BH}$ are usually only possible for SMBHs in an active state: limiting sample size and introducing selection biases. Gravitational lensing makes it possible to measure the mass of non-active SMBHs. We present models of the $z=0.169$ galaxy-scale strong lens Abell~1201. A cD galaxy in a galaxy cluster, it has sufficient `external shear' that a magnified image of a $z = 0.451$ background galaxy is projected just $\sim 1$ kpc from the galaxy centre. Using multi-band Hubble Space Telescope imaging and the lens modeling software $\texttt{PyAutoLens}$ we reconstruct the distribution of mass along this line of sight. Bayesian model comparison favours a point mass with $M_{\rm BH} = 3.27 \pm 2.12\times10^{10}\,$M$_{\rm \odot}$ (3$\sigma$ confidence limit); an ultramassive black hole. One model gives a comparable Bayesian evidence without a SMBH, however we argue this model is nonphysical given its base assumptions. This model still provides an upper limit of $M_{\rm BH} \leq 5.3 \times 10^{10}\,$M$_{\rm \odot}$, because a SMBH above this mass deforms the lensed image $\sim 1$ kpc from Abell 1201's centre. This builds on previous work using central images to place upper limits on $M_{\rm BH}$, but is the first to also place a lower limit and without a central image being observed. The success of this method suggests that surveys during the next decade could measure thousands more SMBH masses, and any redshift evolution of the $M_{\rm BH}$--$\sigma_{\rm e}$ relation. We present a multi-wavelength analysis of the galaxy cluster SPT-CL J0607-4448 (SPT0607), which is one of the most distant clusters discovered by the South Pole Telescope (SPT) at $z=1.4010\pm0.0028$. The high-redshift cluster shows clear signs of being relaxed with well-regulated feedback from the active galactic nucleus (AGN) in the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG). Using Chandra X-ray data, we construct thermodynamic profiles and determine the properties of the intracluster medium. The cool core nature of the cluster is supported by a centrally-peaked density profile and low central entropy ($K_0=18_{-9}^{+11}$ keV cm$^2$), which we estimate assuming an isothermal temperature profile due to the limited spectral information given the distance to the cluster. Using the density profile and gas cooling time inferred from the X-ray data, we find a mass cooling rate of $\dot{M}_\mathrm{cool}=100_{-60}^{+90}~M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. From optical spectroscopy and photometry around the [O II] emission line, we estimate that the BCG star formation rate is SFR$_\mathrm{[O~II]}=1.7_{-0.6}^{+1.0}~M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, roughly two orders of magnitude lower than the predicted mass cooling rate. In addition, using ATCA radio data at 2.1 GHz, we measure a radio jet power of $P_\mathrm{cav}=3.2_{-1.3}^{+2.1}\times10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$, which is consistent with the X-ray cooling luminosity ($L_\mathrm{cool}=1.9_{-0.5}^{+0.2}\times10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$ within $r_\mathrm{cool}=43$ kpc). These findings suggest that SPT0607 is a relaxed, cool core cluster with AGN-regulated cooling at an epoch shortly after cluster formation, implying that the balance between cooling and feedback can be reached quickly. We present XSHOOTER observations with previous ALMA, MUSE and $HST$ observations to study the nature of radio-jet triggered star formation and the interaction of radio jets with the interstellar medium in the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) in the Abell 1795 cluster. Using $HST$ UV data we determined an ongoing star formation rate of 9.3 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. The star formation follows the global Kennicutt-Schmidt law, however, it has a low efficiency compared to circumnuclear starbursts in nearby galaxies with an average depletion time of $\sim$1 Gyr. The star formation and molecular gas are offset by $\sim1$ kpc indicating that stars have decoupled from the gas. We detected an arc of high linewidth in ionized gas where electron densities are elevated by a factor of $\sim$4 suggesting a shock front driven by radio jets or peculiar motion of the BCG. An analysis of nebular emission line flux ratios suggests that the gas is predominantly ionized by star formation with a small contribution from shocks. We also calculated the velocity structure function (VSF) of the ionized and molecular gases using velocity maps to characterize turbulent motion in the gas. The ionized gas VSF suggests that the radio jets are driving supersonic turbulence in the gas. Thus radio jets can not only heat the atmosphere on large scales and may quench star formation on longer timescales while triggering star formation in positive feedback on short timescales of a few million years., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 22 pages, 13 figures 1 table

The cool-core galaxy cluster RXJ1720.1+2638 hosts extended radio emission near the cluster core, known as a minihalo. The origin of this emission is still debated and one piece of the puzzle has been the question of whether the supermassive black hole in the brightest central galaxy is actively powering jets. Here we present high-resolution e-MERLIN observations clearly indicating the presence of sub-kpc jets; this may have implications for the proposed origin of the minihalo emission, providing an ongoing source of relativistic electrons rather than a single burst sometime in the past, as previously assumed in simulations attempting to reproduce observational characteristics of minihalo-hosting systems., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. Galaxies often contain large reservoirs of molecular gas which shape their evolution. This can be through cooling of the gas -- which leads to star formation, or accretion onto the central supermassive black hole -- which fuels AGN activity and produces powerful feedback. Molecular gas has been detected in early-type galaxies on scales of just a few tens to hundreds of solar masses by searching for absorption against their compact radio cores. Using this technique, ALMA has found absorption in several brightest cluster galaxies, some of which show molecular gas moving towards their galaxy's core at hundreds of km/s. In this paper we constrain the location of this absorbing gas by comparing each galaxy's molecular emission and absorption. In four galaxies, the absorption properties are consistent with chance alignments between the continuum and a fraction of the molecular clouds visible in emission. In four others, the properties of the absorption are inconsistent with this scenario. In these systems the absorption is likely produced by a separate population of molecular clouds in close proximity to the galaxy core and with high inward velocities and velocity dispersions. We thus deduce the existence of two types of absorber, caused by chance alignments between the radio core and: (i) a fraction of the molecular clouds visible in emission, and (ii) molecular clouds close to the AGN, in the process of accretion. We also present the first ALMA observations of molecular emission in S555, Abell 2390, RXC J1350.3+0940 and RXC J1603.6+1553 -- with the latter three having molecular masses of $>10^{10}$M$_{\odot}$., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

A key component of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey validation (SV) is a detailed visual inspection (VI) of the optical spectroscopic data to quantify key survey metrics. In this paper we present results from VI of the quasar survey using deep coadded SV spectra. We show that the majority (~70%) of the main-survey targets are spectroscopically confirmed as quasars, with ~16% galaxies, ~6% stars, and ~8% low-quality spectra lacking reliable features. A non-negligible fraction of the quasars are misidentified by the standard spectroscopic pipeline but we show that the majority can be recovered using post-pipeline "afterburner" quasar-identification approaches. We combine these "afterburners" with our standard pipeline to create a modified pipeline to improve the overall quasar yield. At the depth of the main DESI survey both pipelines achieve a good-redshift purity (reliable redshifts measured within 3000 km/s) of ~99%; however, the modified pipeline recovers ~94% of the visually inspected quasars, as compared to ~86% from the standard pipeline. We demonstrate that both pipelines achieve an median redshift precision and accuracy of ~100 km/s and ~70 km/s, respectively. We constructed composite spectra to investigate why some quasars are missed by the standard spectroscopic pipeline and find that they are more host-galaxy dominated (i.e., distant analogs of "Seyfert galaxies") and/or dust reddened than the standard-pipeline quasars. Molecular gas flows are analyzed in 14 cluster galaxies (BCGs) centered in cooling hot atmospheres. The BCGs contain $10^{9}-10^{11}~\rm M_\odot$ of molecular gas, much of which is being moved by radio jets and lobes. The molecular flows and radio jet powers are compared to molecular outflows in 45 active galaxies within $z<0.2$. We seek to understand the relative efficacy of radio, quasar, and starburst feedback over a range of active galaxy types. Molecular flows powered by radio feedback in BCGs are $\sim$10--1000 times larger in extent compared to contemporary galaxies hosting quasar nuclei and starbursts. Radio feedback yields lower flow velocities but higher momenta compared to quasar nuclei, as the molecular gas flows in BCGs are usually $\sim$10--100 times more massive. The product of the molecular gas mass and lifting altitude divided by the AGN or starburst power -- a parameter referred to as the lifting factor -- exceeds starbursts and quasar nuclei by two to three orders of magnitude, respectively. When active, radio feedback is generally more effective at lifting gas in galaxies compared to quasars and starburst winds. The kinetic energy flux of molecular clouds generally lies below and often substantially below a few percent of the driving power. We find tentatively that star formation is suppressed in BCGs relative to other active galaxies, perhaps because these systems rarely form molecular disks that are more impervious to feedback and are better able to promote star formation., Comment: Accepted for Publication in MNRAS

We analyze the cooling and feedback properties of 48 galaxy clusters at redshifts $0.4 < z < 1.3$ selected from the South Pole Telescope (SPT) catalogs to evolve like the progenitors of massive and well-studied systems at $z{\sim}0$. We estimate the radio power at the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) location of each cluster from an analysis of Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) data. Assuming that the scaling relation between radio power and active galactic nucleus (AGN) cavity power $P_{\mathrm{cav}}$ observed at low redshift does not evolve with redshift, we use these measurements in order to estimate the expected AGN cavity power in the core of each system. We estimate the X-ray luminosity within the cooling radius $L_{\mathrm{cool}}$ of each cluster from a joint analysis of the available $Chandra$ X-ray and SPT Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) data. This allows us to characterize the redshift evolution of the $P_{\mathrm{cav}} / L_{\mathrm{cool}}$ ratio. When combined with low-redshift results, these constraints enable investigations of the properties of the feedback/cooling cycle across 9~Gyr of cluster growth. We model the redshift evolution of this ratio measured for cool core clusters by a log-normal distribution $\mathrm{Log}$-$\mathcal{N}(\alpha + \beta z, \sigma^2)$ and constrain the slope of the mean evolution $\beta = -0.05\pm 0.47$. This analysis improves the constraints on the slope of this relation by a factor of two. We find no evidence of redshift evolution of the feedback/cooling equilibrium in these clusters which suggests that the onset of radio-mode feedback took place at an early stage of cluster formation. High values of $P_{\mathrm{cav}} / L_{\mathrm{cool}}$ are found at the BCG location of non-cool core clusters which might suggest that the timescales of the AGN feedback cycle and the cool core / non-cool core transition are different., Comment: Submitted to The Astrophysical Journal

We present a study of a luminous, z=0.15, type-2 quasar (log [L([OIII])/(erg/s)]=42.8) from the Quasar Feedback Survey. It is classified as 'radio-quiet' (log [L(1.4 GHz)/(W/Hz)]=23.8); however, radio imaging reveals ~1 kpc low-power jets (log [Pjet/(erg/s)]=44) inclined into the plane of the galaxy disk. We combine MUSE and ALMA observations to map stellar kinematics and ionised and molecular gas properties. The jets are seen to drive galaxy-wide bi-conical turbulent outflows, reaching W80 = 1000-1300 km/s, in the ionised phase (traced via optical emission-lines), which also have increased electron densities compared to the quiescent gas. The turbulent gas is driven perpendicular to the jet axis and is escaping along the galaxy minor axis, reaching 7.5 kpc on both sides. Traced via CO(3-2) emission, the turbulent material in molecular gas phase is one-third as spatially extended and has 3 times lower velocity-dispersion as compared to ionised gas. The jets are seen to be strongly interacting with the interstellar medium (ISM) through enhanced ionised emission and disturbed/depleted molecular gas at the jet termini. We see further evidence for jet-induced feedback through significantly higher stellar velocity-dispersion aligned, and co-spatial with, the jet axis (<5 deg). We discuss possible negative and positive feedback scenarios arising due to the interaction of the low-power jets with the ISM in the context of recent jet-ISM interaction simulations, which qualitatively agree with our observations. Radio observations represent a powerful probe of the physics occurring in the intracluster medium (ICM) because they trace the relativistic cosmic rays in the cluster magnetic fields, or within galaxies themselves. By probing the low-energy cosmic rays, low-frequency radio observations are especially interesting because they unveil emission powered by low-efficiency particle acceleration processes, which are believed to play a crucial role in the origin of diffuse radio emission. We investigate the origin of the radio mini-halo at the center of the galaxy cluster 2A0335+096 and its connection to the central galaxy and the sloshing cool core. We also study the properties of the head-tail galaxy GB6 B0335+096 hosted in the cluster to explore the lifecycle of the relativistic electrons in its radio tails. We use new LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) observations from the LOFAR Two-meter Sky Survey at 144 MHz to map the low-frequency emission with a high level of detail. The new data were combined with archival Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope and Chandra observations to carry out a multi-wavelength study. We have made the first measurement of the spectral index of the mini-halo ($\alpha=-1.2\pm0.1$ between 144 MHz and 1.4 GHz) and the lobes of the central source ($\alpha\simeq-1.5\pm0.1$ between 144 and 610 MHz). Based on the low-frequency radio emission morphology with respect to the thermal ICM, we propose that the origin of the diffuse radio emission is linked to the sloshing of the cool core. The new data revealed the presence of a Mpc-long radio tail associated with GB6 B0335+096. The observed projected length is a factor 3 longer than the expected cooling length, with evidence of flattening in the spectral index trend along the tail. Diffuse radio emission at the centre of galaxy clusters has been observed both in merging clusters on scales of Mpc, called giant radio haloes, and in relaxed systems with a cool-core on smaller scales, named mini haloes. Giant radio haloes and mini haloes are thought to be distinct classes of sources. However, recent observations have revealed the presence of diffuse radio emission on Mpc scales in clusters that do not show strong dynamical activity. RX J1720.1+2638 is a cool-core cluster, presenting both a bright central mini halo and a fainter diffuse, steep-spectrum emission extending beyond the cluster core that resembles giant radio halo emission. In this paper, we present new observations performed with the LOFAR Low Band Antennas (LBA) at 54 MHz. These observations, combined with data at higher frequencies, allow us to constrain the spectral properties of the radio emission. The large-scale emission presents an ultra-steep spectrum with $\alpha_{54}^{144}\sim3.2$. The radio emission inside and outside the cluster core have strictly different properties, as there is a net change in spectral index and they follow different radio-X-ray surface brightness correlations. We argue that the large-scale diffuse emission is generated by particles re-acceleration after a minor merger. While for the central mini halo we suggest that it could be generated by secondary electrons and positrons from hadronic interactions of relativistic nuclei with the dense cool-core gas, as an alternative to re-acceleration models., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

We describe the scientific goals and survey design of the First Large Absorption Survey in HI (FLASH), a wide field survey for 21-cm line absorption in neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) at intermediate cosmological redshifts. FLASH will be carried out with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) radio telescope and is planned to cover the sky south of $\delta \approx +40$deg at frequencies between 711.5 and 999.5MHz. At redshifts between $z = 0.4$ and $1.0$ (look back times of 4 - 8Gyr), the HI content of the Universe has been poorly explored due to the difficulty of carrying out radio surveys for faint 21-cm line emission and, at ultra-violet wavelengths, space-borne searches for Damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorption in quasar spectra. The ASKAP wide field of view and large spectral bandwidth, in combination with a radio-quiet site, will enable a search for absorption lines in the radio spectra of bright continuum sources over 80% of the sky. This survey is expected to detect at least several hundred intervening 21-cm absorbers, and will produce an HI-absorption-selected catalogue of galaxies rich in cool, star-forming gas, some of which may be concealed from optical surveys. Likewise, at least several hundred associated 21-cm absorbers are expected to be detected within the host galaxies of radio sources at $0.4 < z < 1.0$, providing valuable kinematical information for models of gas accretion and jet-driven feedback in radio-loud active galactic nuclei. MS 0735.6+7421 is a galaxy cluster which hosts a central radio galaxy with a very steep spectrum, produced by one of the most powerful known jetted active galactic nuclei (AGN). The radio plasma, ejected at nearly light speed from the central AGN, have displaced the intra-cluster medium, leaving two pairs of cavities observable in the X-ray, associated to two different outbursts, and have distributed energy to the surrounding medium. In this work we have performed for the first time a detailed, high-resolution spectral study of the source at radio frequencies and investigated its duty cycle to be compared with previous X-ray estimates. We have used new observations at 144 MHz produced with the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) together with archival data at higher frequencies. At LOFAR frequency, the source presents two large outer radio lobes, wider than at higher frequencies, and a smaller Intermediate lobe located south-west of the core. A new inspection of X-ray data, allowed us to identify an intermediate cavity, associated with that lobe, indicating the presence of a further phase of jet activity. The radio lobes have a steep spectrum even at LOFAR frequencies, reaching $\alpha_{144}^{610}=2.9$ in the outer lobes and $\alpha_{144}^{610}=2.1$ in the Intermediate lobe. Fitting the lobe spectra using a single injection model of particle ageing, we derived a total age of the source between 170 and 106 Myr, in agreement with the buoyancy and sound crossing time-scales derived from X-ray data. We then reconstructed the duty cycle of the source. There were three phases of jet activity, with the AGN being active for most of the time with only brief quiescent phases, ensuring the repeated heating of the central gas. Finally, energetic estimates revealed that a source of additional pressure support must be present to sustain the bubbles against the pressure of the external medium., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures; accepted for publication in A&A

The excitation of the filamentary gas structures surrounding giant elliptical galaxies at the center of cool-core clusters, a.k.a BCGs (brightest cluster galaxies), is key to our understanding of active galactic nucleus feedback, and of the impact of environmental and local effects on star formation. We investigate the contribution of the thermal radiation from the cooling flow surrounding BCGs to the excitation of the filaments. We explore the effects of small levels of extra-heating (turbulence), and of metallicity, on the optical and infrared lines. Using the Cloudy code, we model the photoionization and photodissociation of a slab of gas of optical depth AV{\leq}30mag at constant pressure, in order to calculate self-consistently all of the gas phases, from ionized gas to molecular gas. The ionizing source is the EUV and soft X-ray radiation emitted by the cooling gas. We test these models comparing their predictions to the rich multi-wavelength observations, from optical to submillimeter. These models reproduce most of the multi-wavelength spectra observed in the nebulae surrounding the BCGs, not only the LINER-like optical diagnostics: [O iii]{\lambda} 5007 {\AA}/H\b{eta}, [N ii]{\lambda} 6583 {\AA}/H{\alpha} and ([S ii]{\lambda} 6716 {\AA}+[S ii]{\lambda} 6731 {\AA})/H{\alpha} but also the infrared emission lines from the atomic gas. The modeled ro-vib H2 lines also match observations, which indicates that near and mid-IR H2 lines are mostly excited by collisions between H2 molecules and secondary electrons produced naturally inside the cloud by the interaction between the X-rays and the cold gas in the filament. However, there is still some tension between ionized and molecular line tracers (i.e. CO), which requires to optimize the cloud structure and the density of the molecular zone., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. We present the first results from the Quasar Feedback Survey, a sample of 42 z<0.2, [O III] luminous AGN (L[O III]>10^42.1 ergs/s) with moderate radio luminosities (i.e. L(1.4GHz)>10^23.4 W/Hz; median L(1.4GHz)=5.9x10^23 W/Hz). Using high spatial resolution (~0.3-1 arcsec), 1.5-6 GHz radio images from the Very Large Array, we find that 67 percent of the sample have spatially extended radio features, on ~1-60 kpc scales. The radio sizes and morphologies suggest that these may be lower radio luminosity versions of compact, radio-loud AGN. By combining the radio-to-infrared excess parameter, spectral index, radio morphology and brightness temperature, we find radio emission in at least 57 percent of the sample that is associated with AGN-related processes (e.g. jets, quasar-driven winds or coronal emission). This is despite only 9.5-21 percent being classified as radio-loud using traditional criteria. The origin of the radio emission in the remainder of the sample is unclear. We find that both the established anti-correlation between radio size and the width of the [O III] line, and the known trend for the most [O III] luminous AGN to be associated with spatially-extended radio emission, also hold for our sample of moderate radio luminosity quasars. These observations add to the growing evidence of a connection between the radio emission and ionised gas in quasar host galaxies. We present a recent ALMA observation of the CO(1-0) line emission in the central galaxy of the Zw 3146 galaxy cluster ($z=0.2906$). We also present updated X-ray cavity measurements from archival Chandra observations. The $5\times 10^{10}\,M_{\odot}$ supply of molecular gas, which is confined to the central 4 kpc, is marginally resolved into three extensions that are reminiscent of the filaments observed in similar systems. No velocity structure that would be indicative of ordered motion is observed. The three molecular extensions all trail X-ray cavities, and are potentially formed from the condensation of intracluster gas lifted in the wakes of the rising bubbles. Many cycles of feedback would be require to account for the entire molecular gas reservoir. The molecular gas and continuum source are mutually offset by 2.6 kpc, with no detected line emission coincident with the continuum source. It is the molecular gas, not the continuum source, that lies at the gravitational center of the brightest cluster galaxy. As the brightest cluster galaxy contains possible tidal features, the displaced continuum source may correspond to the nucleus of a merging galaxy. A variety of large-scale diffuse radio structures have been identified in many clusters with the advent of new state-of-the-art facilities in radio astronomy. Among these diffuse radio structures, radio mini-halos are found in the central regions of cool core clusters. Their origin is still unknown and they are challenging to discover; less than thirty have been published to date. Based on new VLA observations, we confirmed the mini-halo in the massive strong cool core cluster PKS 0745$-$191 ($z=0.1028$) and discovered one in the massive cool core cluster MACS J1447.4+0827 ($z=0.3755$). Furthermore, using a detailed analysis of all known mini-halos, we explore the relation between mini-halos and AGN feedback processes from the central galaxy. We find evidence of strong, previously unknown correlations between mini-halo radio power and X-ray cavity power, and between mini-halo and the central galaxy radio power related to the relativistic jets when spectrally decomposing the AGN radio emission into a component for past outbursts and one for on-going accretion. Overall, our study indicates that mini-halos are directly connected to the central AGN in clusters, following previous suppositions. We hypothesize that AGN feedback may be one of the dominant mechanisms giving rise to mini-halos by injecting energy into the intra-cluster medium and reaccelerating an old population of particles, while sloshing motion may drive the overall shape of mini-halos inside cold fronts. AGN feedback may therefore not only play a vital role in offsetting cooling in cool core clusters, but may also play a fundamental role in re-energizing non-thermal particles in clusters., Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures, 8 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present LOFAR observations at 120-168 MHz of 42 systems with possible X-ray cavities in their hot atmosphere, of which 17 are groups or ellipticals, 19 are nearby clusters (z<0.3), and six are higher-redshift clusters (z>0.3). The X-ray cavities, formed by the radio lobes of the central active galactic nucleus (AGN), are evidence of radio-mode AGN feedback. In the groups and ellipticals sample, more than half of the systems have X-ray cavities for which no associated lobe emission was detected. Conversely, we report the discovery of large radio lobes in NGC 6338, extending far beyond the emission reported previously in the literature. In the case of the nearby clusters, our observations show that there is little low-frequency radio emission that extends beyond the cavities (e.g., MS 0735.6+7421 and A2052). For the first time, we report secure cavity-radio associations in 2A 0335+096, ZwCl 2701, and ZwCl 8276 that strengthens their interpretation as AGN-created cavities. However, in some known cavity systems (e.g., A1795 and ZwCl 3146) we report the lack of detectable low-frequency radio emission associated with the cavities. Our sample of higher-redshift systems is small, and unfortunately the present LOFAR observations are not able to resolve the lobes in many of them. Clusters of galaxies are outstanding laboratories for understanding the physics of supermassive black hole feedback. Here, we present the first \textit{Chandra}, Karl G. Janksy Very Large Array and \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} analysis of MACS J1447.4+0827 ($z = 0.3755$), one of the strongest cool core clusters known, in which extreme feedback from its central supermassive black hole is needed to prevent the hot intracluster gas from cooling. Using this multiwavelength approach, including 70 ks of \textit{Chandra} X-ray observations, we detect the presence of collimated jetted-outflows that coincides with a southern and a northern X-ray cavity. The total mechanical power associated with these outflows ($P_{\mathrm{cav}} \approx 6 \times 10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$) is roughly consistent with the energy required to prevent catastrophic cooling of the hot intracluster gas ($L_{\mathrm{cool}} = 1.71 \pm 0.01 \times 10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$ for t$_\mathrm{cool}$ = 7.7 Gyrs); implying that powerful supermassive black hole feedback has been in place several Giga-years ago in MACS J1447.7+0827. In addition, we detect the presence of a radio mini-halo that extends over 300 kpc in diameter ($P_{1.4 \mathrm{GHz}} = 3.0 \pm 0.3 \times 10^{24}$ W Hz$^{-1}$). The X-ray observations also reveal a $\sim20$ kpc plume-like structure that coincides with optical dusty filaments that surround the central galaxy. We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of the brightest cluster galaxy Hydra-A, a nearby ($z=0.054$) giant elliptical galaxy with powerful and extended radio jets. The observations reveal CO(1-0), CO(2-1), $^{13}$CO(2-1), CN(2-1), SiO(5-4), HCO$^{+}$(1-0), HCO$^{+}$(2-1), HCN(1-0), HCN(2-1), HNC(1-0) and H$_{2}$CO(3-2) absorption lines against the galaxy's bright and compact active galactic nucleus. These absorption features are due to at least 12 individual molecular clouds which lie close to the centre of the galaxy and have velocities of approximately $-50$ to $+10$ km/s relative to its recession velocity, where positive values correspond to inward motion. The absorption profiles are evidence of a clumpy interstellar medium within brightest cluster galaxies composed of clouds with similar column densities, velocity dispersions and excitation temperatures to those found at radii of several kpc in the Milky Way. We also show potential variation in a $\sim 10$ km/s wide section of the absorption profile over a two year timescale, most likely caused by relativistic motions in the hot spots of the continuum source which change the background illumination of the absorbing clouds., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We analyzed Chandra X-ray observations of five galaxy clusters whose atmospheric cooling times, entropy parameters, and cooling time to free-fall time ratios within the central galaxies lie below 1 Gyr, below 30 keV cm^2, and between 20 < tcool/tff < 50, respectively. These thermodynamic properties are commonly associated with molecular clouds, bright H-alpha emission, and star formation in central galaxies. However, none of these clusters have detectable H-alpha indicated in the ACCEPT database, nor do they have significant star formation rates or detectable molecular gas. Among these, only RBS0533 has a detectable radio/X-ray bubble which are commonly observed in cooling atmospheres. Signatures of uplifted, high metallicity atmospheric gas are absent. Despite its prominent X-ray bubble, RBS0533 lacks significant levels of molecular gas. Cold gas is absent at appreciable levels in these systems perhaps because their radio sources have failed to lift low entropy atmospheric gas to an altitude where the ratio of the cooling time to the free-fall time falls below unity., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. The Beyond Ultra-deep Frontier Fields and Legacy Observations (BUFFALO) is a 101 orbit + 101 parallel Cycle 25 Hubble Space Telescope Treasury program taking data from 2018-2020. BUFFALO will expand existing coverage of the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) in WFC3/IR F105W, F125W, and F160W and ACS/WFC F606W and F814W around each of the six HFF clusters and flanking fields. This additional area has not been observed by HST but is already covered by deep multi-wavelength datasets, including Spitzer and Chandra. As with the original HFF program, BUFFALO is designed to take advantage of gravitational lensing from massive clusters to simultaneously find high-redshift galaxies which would otherwise lie below HST detection limits and model foreground clusters to study properties of dark matter and galaxy assembly. The expanded area will provide a first opportunity to study both cosmic variance at high redshift and galaxy assembly in the outskirts of the large HFF clusters. Five additional orbits are reserved for transient followup. BUFFALO data including mosaics, value-added catalogs and cluster mass distribution models will be released via MAST on a regular basis, as the observations and analysis are completed for the six individual clusters., Comment: Accepted ApJS; MAST archive will be live concurrent with publication

We present ~103 ks of Chandra observations of the galaxy cluster SPT-CLJ0528-5300 (SPT0528, z=0.768). This cluster harbors the most radio-loud (L_1.4GHz = 1.01 x 10^33 erg/s/Hz) central AGN of any cluster in the South Pole Telescope (SPT) SZ survey with available X-ray data. We find evidence of AGN-inflated cavities in the X-ray emission, which are consistent with the orientation of the jet direction revealed by ATCA radio data. The combined probability that two such depressions -- each at ~1.4-1.8sigma significance, oriented ~180 degrees apart and aligned with the jet axis -- would occur by chance is 0.1%. At >10^61 erg, the outburst in SPT0528 is among the most energetic known in the universe, and certainly the most powerful known at z>0.25. This work demonstrates that such powerful outbursts can be detected even in shallow X-ray exposures out to relatively high redshifts (z~0.8), providing an avenue for studying the evolution of extreme AGN feedback. The ratio of the cavity power (P_cav = 9.4+/-5.8 x 10^45 erg/s) to the cooling luminosity (L_cool = 1.5+/-0.5 x 10^44 erg/s) for SPT0528 is among the highest measured to date. If, in the future, additional systems are discovered at similar redshifts with equally high P_cav/L_cool ratios, it would imply that the feedback/cooling cycle was not as gentle at high redshifts as in the low-redshift universe., Comment: Accepted to ApJL. 8 pages, 5 figures

To advance our understanding of the fuelling and feedback processes which power the Universe's most massive black holes, we require a significant increase in our knowledge of the molecular gas which exists in their immediate surroundings. However, the behaviour of this gas is poorly understood due to the difficulties associated with observing it directly. We report on a survey of 18 brightest cluster galaxies lying in cool cores, from which we detect molecular gas in the core regions of eight via carbon monoxide (CO), cyanide (CN) and silicon monoxide (SiO) absorption lines. These absorption lines are produced by cold molecular gas clouds which lie along the line of sight to the bright continuum sources at the galaxy centres. As such, they can be used to determine many properties of the molecular gas which may go on to fuel supermassive black hole accretion and AGN feedback mechanisms. The absorption regions detected have velocities ranging from -45 to 283 km s$^{-1}$ relative to the systemic velocity of the galaxy, and have a bias for motion towards the host supermassive black hole. We find that the CN N = 0 - 1 absorption lines are typically 10 times stronger than those of CO J = 0 - 1. This is due to the higher electric dipole moment of the CN molecule, which enhances its absorption strength. In terms of molecular number density CO remains the more prevalent molecule with a ratio of CO/CN $\sim 10$, similar to that of nearby galaxies. We analyse the multi-frequency radio spectral properties of $41$ 6GHz-detected ALMA-identified, submillimetre galaxies (SMGs), observed at 610MHz, 1.4GHz, 6GHz with GMRT and the VLA. Combining high-resolution ($\sim0.5''$) 6GHz radio and ALMA $870\,\mu$m imaging (tracing rest-frame $\sim20$GHz, and $\sim250\,\mu$m dust continuum), we study the far-infrared/radio correlation via the logarithmic flux ratio $q_{\rm IR}$, measuring $\langle q_{\rm IR}\rangle=2.20\pm 0.06$ for our sample. We show that the high-frequency radio sizes of SMGs are $\sim1.9\pm 0.4\times$ ($\sim2$-$3$kpc) larger than those of the cool dust emission, and find evidence for a subset of our sources being extended on $\sim 10$kpc scales at 1.4GHz. By combining radio flux densities measured at three frequencies, we can move beyond simple linear fits to the radio spectra of high-redshift star-forming galaxies, and search for spectral curvature, which has been observed in local starburst galaxies. At least a quarter (10/41) of our sample show evidence of a spectral break, with a median $\langle\alpha^{1.4\,{\rm GHz}}_{610\,{\rm GHz}}\rangle=-0.60\pm 0.06$, but $\langle\alpha^{6\,{\rm GHz}}_{1.4\,{\rm GHz}}\rangle=-1.06\pm 0.04$ -- a high-frequency flux deficit relative to simple extrapolations from the low-frequency data. We explore this result within this subset of sources in the context of age-related synchrotron losses, showing that a combination of weak magnetic fields ($B\sim35\,\mu$G) and young ages ($t_{\rm SB}\sim40$--$80\,$Myr) for the central starburst can reproduce the observed spectral break. Assuming these represent evolved (but ongoing) starbursts and we are observing these systems roughly half-way through their current episode of star formation, this implies starburst durations of $\lesssim100$Myr, in reasonable agreement with estimates derived via gas depletion timescales., Comment: 25 pages, 10 colour figures, 2 tables; accepted for publication in ApJ

We present an analysis of new and archival ALMA observations of molecular gas in twelve central cluster galaxies. We examine emerging trends in molecular filament morphology and gas velocities to understand their origins. Molecular gas masses in these systems span $10^9-10^{11}\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$, far more than most gas-rich galaxies. ALMA images reveal a distribution of morphologies from filamentary to disk-dominated structures. Circumnuclear disks on kiloparsec scales appear rare. In most systems, half to nearly all of the molecular gas lies in filamentary structures with masses of a few $\times10^{8-10}\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ that extend radially several to several tens of kpc. In nearly all cases the molecular gas velocities lie far below stellar velocity dispersions, indicating youth, transience or both. Filament bulk velocities lie far below the galaxy's escape and free-fall speeds indicating they are bound and being decelerated. Most extended molecular filaments surround or lie beneath radio bubbles inflated by the central AGN. Smooth velocity gradients found along the filaments are consistent with gas flowing along streamlines surrounding these bubbles. Evidence suggests most of the molecular clouds formed from low entropy X-ray gas that became thermally unstable and cooled when lifted by the buoyant bubbles. Uplifted gas will stall and fall back to the galaxy in a circulating flow. The distribution in morphologies from filament to disk-dominated sources therefore implies slowly evolving molecular structures driven by the episodic activity of the AGN., Comment: 20 pages, 21 figures, 4 tables, accepted to MNRAS

We present 1-7 GHz high-resolution radio imaging (VLA and e-MERLIN) and spatially-resolved ionized gas kinematics for ten z<0.2 type~2 `obscured' quasars (log [L(AGN)/(erg/s)]>~45) with moderate radio luminosities (log [L(1.4GHz)/(W/Hz)]=23.3-24.4). These targets were selected to have known ionized outflows based on broad [OIII] emission-line components (FWHM~800-1800 km/s). Although `radio-quiet' and not `radio AGN' by many traditional criteria, we show that for nine of the targets, star formation likely accounts for <~10 per cent of the radio emission. We find that ~80-90 per cent of these nine targets exhibit extended radio structures on 1-25 kpc scales. The quasars' radio morphologies, spectral indices and position on the radio size-luminosity relationship reveals that these sources are consistent with being low power compact radio galaxies. Therefore, we favour radio jets as dominating the radio emission in the majority of these quasars. The radio jets we observe are associated with morphologically and kinematically distinct features in the ionized gas, such as increased turbulence and outflowing bubbles, revealing jet-gas interaction on galactic scales. Importantly, such conclusions could not have been drawn from current low-resolution radio surveys such as FIRST. Our observations support a scenario where compact radio jets, with modest radio luminosities, are a crucial feedback mechanism for massive galaxies during a quasar phase., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Active galactic nuclei play a crucial role in the accretion and ejection of gas in galaxies. Although their outflows are well studied, finding direct evidence of accretion has proved very difficult and has so far been done for very few sources. A promising way to study the significance of cold accretion is by observing the absorption of an active galactic nucleus's extremely bright radio emission by the cold gas lying along the line-of-sight. As such, we present ALMA CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) observations of the Hydra-A brightest cluster galaxy (z=0.054) which reveal the existence of cold, molecular gas clouds along the line-of-sight to the galaxy's extremely bright and compact mm-continuum source. They have apparent motions relative to the central supermassive black hole of between -43 and -4 km s$^{-1}$ and are most likely moving along stable, low ellipticity orbits. The identified clouds form part of a $\sim$$10^{9}$ $\text{M}_{\odot}$, approximately edge-on disc of cold molecular gas. With peak CO(2-1) optical depths of $\tau$=0.88 $^{+0.06}_{-0.06}$, they include the narrowest and by far the deepest absorption of this type which has been observed to date in a brightest cluster galaxy. By comparing the relative strengths of the lines for the most strongly absorbing region, we are able to estimate a gas temperature of $42^{+25}_{-11}$ K and line-of-sight column densities of $N_{CO}=2^{+3}_{-1}\times 10 ^{17} cm^{-2}$ and $N_{ H_{2} }=7^{+10}_{-4}\times 10 ^{20} cm^{-2}$., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, accepted to MNRAS

We quantify the star formation (SF) in the inner cores ($\mathcal{R}$/$R_{200}$$\leq$0.3) of 24 massive galaxy clusters at 0.2$\lesssim$$z$$\lesssim$0.9 observed by the $Herschel$ Lensing Survey and the Cluster Lensing and Supernova survey with $Hubble$. These programmes, covering the rest-frame ultraviolet to far-infrared regimes, allow us to accurately characterize stellar mass-limited ($\mathcal{M}_{*}$$>$$10^{10}$ $M_{\odot}$) samples of star-forming cluster members (not)-detected in the mid- and/or far-infrared. We release the catalogues with the photometry, photometric redshifts, and physical properties of these samples. We also quantify the SF displayed by comparable field samples from the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey. We find that in intermediate-$z$ cluster cores, the SF activity is suppressed with respect the field in terms of both the fraction ($\mathcal{F}$) of star-forming galaxies (SFG) and the rate at which they form stars ($\mathcal{SFR}$ and $s\mathcal{SFR} = \mathcal{SFR}/\mathcal{M}_{*}$). On average, the $\mathcal{F}$ of SFGs is a factor $\sim$$2$ smaller in cluster cores than in the field. Furthermore, SFGs present average $\mathcal{SFR}$ and $s\mathcal{SFR}$ typically $\sim$0.3 dex smaller in the clusters than in the field along the whole redshift range probed. Our results favour long time-scale quenching physical processes as the main driver of SF suppression in the inner cores of clusters since $z$$\sim$0.9, with shorter time-scale processes being very likely responsible for a fraction of the missing SFG population., Comment: 34 pages, 13 figures, 15 tables; accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present recent {\it Chandra} X-ray observations of the RXJ0821.0+0752 galaxy cluster in addition to ALMA observations of the CO(1-0) and CO(3-2) line emission tracing the molecular gas in its central galaxy. All of the CO line emission, originating from a $10^{10}\,M_{\odot}$ molecular gas reservoir, is located several kpc away from the nucleus of the central galaxy. The cold gas is concentrated into two main clumps surrounded by a diffuse envelope. They form a wide filament coincident with a plume of bright X-ray emission emanating from the cluster core. This plume encompasses a putative X-ray cavity that is only large enough to have uplifted a few percent of the molecular gas. Unlike other brightest cluster galaxies, stimulated cooling, where X-ray cavities lift low entropy cluster gas until it becomes thermally unstable, cannot have produced the observed gas reservoir. Instead, the molecular gas has likely formed as a result of sloshing motions in the intracluster medium induced by a nearby galaxy. Sloshing can emulate uplift by dislodging gas from the galactic center. We present a multi-wavelength analysis of the core of the massive galaxy cluster MACS\,J0417.5-1154 ($z = 0.441$; MACS\;J0417). Our analysis takes advantage of VLT/MUSE observations which allow the spectroscopic confirmation of three strongly-lensed systems. One of these, nick-named \emph{The Doughnut}, consists of three complete images of a complex ring galaxy at $z = 0.8718$ and a fourth, partial and radial image close to the Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG) only discernible thanks to its strong [OII] line emission. The best-fit mass model (rms of 0.38\arcsec) yields a two-dimensional enclosed mass of $M({\rm R < 200\,kpc}) = (1.77\pm0.03)\times10^{14}\,\msun$ and almost perfect alignment between the peaks of the BCG light and the dark matter of ($0.5\pm0.5$)\arcsec . Our finding that a significant misalignment results when the radial image of \emph{The Doughnut} is omitted serves as an important caveat for studies of BCG-dark matter offsets in galaxy clusters. Using \emph{Chandra} data to map the intra-cluster gas, we observe an offset between the gas and dark-matter peaks of ($1.7\pm0.5$)\arcsec, and excellent alignment of the X-ray peak with the location of optical emission line associated with the BCG. We interpret all observational evidence in the framework of on-going merger activity, noting specifically that the coincidence between the gas peak and the peak of blue light from the BCG may be evidence of dense, cold gas leading to direct star formation. We use the surface area $\sigma_{\mu}$ above a given magnification factor $\mu$ as a metric to estimate the lensing power of MACS\,J0417. We obtain $\sigma(\mu > 3) = 0.22$\,arcmin$^2$ confirming MACS\,J0417 as an efficient gravitational lens. Finally, we discuss the differences between our mass model and Mahler et al. We analyze $Chandra$ observations of the hot atmospheres of 40 early spiral and elliptical galaxies. Using new temperature, density, cooling time, and mass profiles, we explore relationships between their hot atmospheres and cold molecular gas. Molecular gas mass correlates with atmospheric gas mass and density over four decades from central galaxies in clusters to normal giant ellipticals and early spirals. The mass and density relations follow power laws: $M_{\rm mol} \propto M_{\rm X}^{1.4\pm0.1}$ and $M_{\rm mol} \propto n_{\rm e}^{1.8\pm0.3}$, respectively, at 10 kpc. The ratio of molecular gas to atmospheric gas within a 10 kpc radius lies between $3\%$ and $10\%$ for early-type galaxies and between $3\%$ and $50\%$ for central galaxies in clusters. Early-type galaxies have detectable levels of molecular gas when their atmospheric cooling times falls below $\sim \rm Gyr$ at a radius of 10 kpc. A similar trend is found in central cluster galaxies. We find no relationship between the ratio of the cooling time to free fall time, $t_{\rm c}/t_{\rm ff}$, and the presence or absence of molecular clouds in early-type galaxies. We present new, deep (245 ks) Chandra observations of the galaxy cluster Abell 1664 ($z = 0.1283$). These images reveal rich structure, including elongation and accompanying compressions of the X-ray isophotes in the NE-SW direction, suggesting that the hot gas is sloshing in the gravitational potential. This sloshing has resulted in cold fronts, at distances of 55, 115 and 320 kpc from the cluster center. Our results indicate that the core of A1664 is highly disturbed, as the global metallicity and cooling time flatten at small radii, implying mixing on large scales. The central AGN appears to have recently undergone a mechanical outburst, as evidenced by our detection of cavities. These cavities are the X-ray manifestations of radio bubbles inflated by the AGN, and may explain the motion of cold molecular CO clouds previously observed with ALMA. The estimated mechanical power of the AGN, using the minimum energy required to inflate the cavities as a proxy, is $P_{\rm cav} = (1.1 \pm 1.0) \times 10^{44} $ erg s$^{-1}$, which may be enough to drive the molecular gas flows, and offset the cooling luminosity of the ICM, at $L_{\rm cool} = (1.90 \pm0.01)\times 10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$. This mechanical power is orders of magnitude higher than the measured upper limit on the X-ray luminosity of the central AGN, suggesting that its black hole may be extremely massive and/or radiatively inefficient. We map temperature variations on the same spatial scale as the molecular gas, and find that the most rapidly cooling gas is mostly coincident with the molecular gas reservoir centered on the BCG's systemic velocity observed with ALMA and may be fueling cold accretion onto the central black hole., Comment: Submitted to ApJ. 14 pages, 7 figures, 1 table, 1 appendix. We present the detection of a bright 3mm continuum source in the Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG) in Abell 851 (z=0.411) with the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA). When this detection is compared to other multi-frequency observations across 21cm-100um, including new Arcminute Microkelvin Imager 15GHz observations, we find evidence for a relatively flat, variable core source associated with the BCG. The radio power and amplitude of variability observed in this galaxy is consistent with the cores in lower redshift BCGs in X-ray-selected clusters, and the flat mm-cm spectrum is suggestive of the BCG being a low luminosity AGN archetype. The discovery of this system could provide a basis for a long-term study of the role of low luminosity radio mode 'regulatory' feedback in massive clusters., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted in MNRAS Letters

We present ALMA and MUSE observations of the Brightest Cluster Galaxy in Abell 2597, a nearby (z=0.0821) cool core cluster of galaxies. The data map the kinematics of a three billion solar mass filamentary nebula that spans the innermost 30 kpc of the galaxy's core. Its warm ionized and cold molecular components are both cospatial and comoving, consistent with the hypothesis that the optical nebula traces the warm envelopes of many cold molecular clouds that drift in the velocity field of the hot X-ray atmosphere. The clouds are not in dynamical equilibrium, and instead show evidence for inflow toward the central supermassive black hole, outflow along the jets it launches, and uplift by the buoyant hot bubbles those jets inflate. The entire scenario is therefore consistent with a galaxy-spanning "fountain", wherein cold gas clouds drain into the black hole accretion reservoir, powering jets and bubbles that uplift a cooling plume of low-entropy multiphase gas, which may stimulate additional cooling and accretion as part of a self-regulating feedback loop. All velocities are below the escape speed from the galaxy, and so these clouds should rain back toward the galaxy center from which they came, keeping the fountain long-lived. The data are consistent with major predictions of chaotic cold accretion, precipitation, and stimulated feedback models, and may trace processes fundamental to galaxy evolution at effectively all mass scales., Comment: 31 pages, 19 figures. We present recent ALMA observations of the CO(1-0) and CO(3-2) emission lines in the brightest cluster galaxy of RXCJ1504.1$-$0248, which is one of the most extreme cool core clusters known. The central galaxy contains $1.9\times 10^{10}~M_{\odot}$ of molecular gas. The molecular gas morphology is complex and disturbed, showing no evidence for a rotationally-supported structure in equilibrium. $80\%$ of the gas is situated within the central 5 kpc of the galactic center, while the remaining gas is located in a 20 kpc long filament. The cold gas has likely condensed out of the hot atmosphere. The filament is oriented along the edge of a putative X-ray cavity, suggesting that AGN activity has stimulated condensation. This is enegetically feasible, although the morphology is not as conclusive as systems whose molecular filaments trail directly behind buoyant radio bubbles. The velocity gradient along the filament is smooth and shallow. It is only consistent with free-fall if it lies within $20^{\circ}$ of the plane of the sky. The abundance of clusters with comparably low velocities suggests that the filament is not free-falling. Both the central and filamentary gas are coincident with bright UV emission from ongoing star formation. Star formation near the cluster core is consistent with the Kennicutt-Schmidt law. The filament exhibits increased star formation surface densities, possibly resulting from either the consumption of a finite molecular gas supply or spatial variations in the CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, accepted in ApJ

We present deep high resolution (0.03", 200pc) ALMA Band 7 observations covering the dust continuum and [CII] $\lambda157.7\mu$m emission in four $z\sim4.4-4.8$ sub-millimeter galaxies (SMGs) selected from the ALESS and AS2UDS surveys. The data show that the rest-frame 160$\mu$m (observed 345 GHz) dust emission is consistent with smooth morphologies on kpc scales for three of the sources. One source, UDS47.0, displays apparent substructure but this is also consistent with a smooth morphology, as indicated by simulations showing that smooth exponential disks can appear clumpy when observed at high angular resolution (0.03") and depth of these observations ($\sigma_{345\text{GHz}} \sim27-47\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$). The four SMGs are bright [CII] emitters, and we extract [CII] spectra from the high resolution data, and recover $\sim20-100$% of the [CII] flux and $\sim40-80$% of the dust continuum emission, compared to the previous lower resolution observations. When tapered to 0.2" resolution our maps recover $\sim80-100$% of the continuum emission, indicating that $\sim60$% of the emission is resolved out on $\sim200$pc scales. We find that the [CII] emission in high-redshift galaxies is more spatially extended than the rest-frame 160$\mu$m dust continuum by a factor of $1.6\pm0.4$. By considering the $L_{\text{[CII]}}$/$L_{\text{FIR}}$ ratio as a function of the star-formation rate surface density ($\Sigma_{\text{SFR}}$) we revisit the [CII] deficit, and suggest that the decline in the $L_{\text{[CII]}}$/$L_{\text{FIR}}$ ratio as a function of $\Sigma_{\text{SFR}}$ is consistent with local processes.
