Abstract

Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are believed to originate from core collapse of massive stars. High-redshift GRBs can probe the star formation and reionization history of the early universe, but their detection remains rare. Here we report the detection of a GRB triggered in the 0.5--4 keV band by the Wide-field X-ray Telescope (WXT) on board the Einstein Probe (EP) mission, designated as EP240315a, whose bright peak was also detected by the Swift Burst Alert Telescope and Konus-Wind through off-line analyses. At a redshift of $z=4.859$, EP240315a showed a much longer and more complicated light curve in the soft X-ray band than in gamma-rays. Benefiting from a large field-of-view ($\sim$3600 deg$^2$) and a high sensitivity, EP-WXT captured the earlier engine activation and extended late engine activity through a continuous detection. With a peak X-ray flux at the faint end of previously known high-$z$ GRBs, the detection of EP240315a demonstrates the great potential for EP to study the early universe via GRBs., Comment: 41 pages, 8 figures, 7 tables

Abstract

The Domain Name System (DNS) service is one of the pillars of the Internet. This service allows users to access websites on the Internet through easy-to-remember domain names rather than complex numeric IP addresses. DNS acts as a directory that translates the domain names into a corresponding IP address, allowing communication between computers on different networks. However, the concentration of DNS service providers on the Internet affects user security, privacy, and network accessibility. The reliance on a small number of large DNS providers can lead to (a) risks of data breaches and disruption of service in the event of failures and (b) concerns about the digital sovereignty of countries regarding DNS hosting. In this sense, this work approaches this issue of DNS concentration on the Internet by presenting a solution to measure DNS hosting centralization and digital sovereignty in countries. With the data obtained through these measurements, relevant questions are answered, such as which are the top-10 DNS providers, if there is DNS centralization, and how dependent countries are on such providers., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Hospital infrastructures are always in evidence in periods of crisis, such as natural disasters or pandemic events, under stress. The recent COVID-19 pandemic exposed several inefficiencies in hospital systems over a relatively long period. Among these inefficiencies are human factors, such as how to manage staff during periods of high demand, and technical factors, including the management of Portable Medical Devices (PMD), such as mechanical ventilators, capnography monitors, infusion pumps, or pulse oximeters. These devices, which are vital for monitoring patients or performing different procedures, were found to have a high turnover during high-demand, resulting in inefficiencies and more pressure on medical teams. Thus, the work PMD-Track evaluates in detail two popular indoor tracking approaches concerning their accuracy, placement of beacons, and economic impacts. The key novelty of PMD-Track relies on using smartphones provided to hospital employees, replacing typical stationary gateways spread across a hospital, functioning as mobile gateways with a front-end that assists staff in locating PMDs. As employees approach tagged PMDs, their smartphone automatically updates the location of spotted PMDs in real-time, providing room-level localization data with up to 83% accuracy for fingerprinting and 35% for multilateration. In addition, fingerprinting is 45% cheaper than multilateration over the course of five years. Abstract

The orbital observatory Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG), equipped with the grazing-incidence X-ray telescopes Mikhail Pavlinsky ART-XC and eROSITA, was launched by Roscosmos to the Lagrange L2 point of the Sun-Earth system on July 13, 2019. The launch was carried out from the Baikonur Cosmodrome by a Proton-M rocket with a DM-03 upper stage. The German telescope eROSITA was installed on SRG under an agreement between Roskosmos and the DLR, the German Aerospace Agency. In December 2019, SRG started to perform its main scientific task: scanning the celestial sphere to obtain X-ray maps of the entire sky in several energy ranges (from 0.2 to 8 keV with eROSITA, and from 4 to 30 keV with ART-XC). By mid-June 2021, the third six-month all-sky survey had been completed. Over a period of four years, it is planned to obtain eight independent maps of the entire sky in each of the energy ranges. The sum of these maps will provide high sensitivity and reveal more than three million quasars and over one hundred thousand massive galaxy clusters and galaxy groups. The availability of eight sky maps will enable monitoring of long-term variability (every six months) of a huge number of extragalactic and Galactic X-ray sources, including hundreds of thousands of stars with hot coronae. The rotation of the satellite around the axis directed toward the Sun with a period of four hours enables tracking the faster variability of bright X-ray sources during one day every half year. The chosen strategy of scanning the sky leads to the formation of deep survey zones near both ecliptic poles. Abstract

La ecografía es una herramienta diagnóstica que ofrece grandes ventajas en la recolección inicial de información de manera inmediata para el médico de primer contacto en área de urgencias al lado de la cama del paciente. Se caracteriza por ser una exploración breve y de baja complejidad que permite mejorar la evaluación inicial en tiempo real, para finalmente correlacionar con los datos obtenidos durante el ejercicio clínico. La propuesta del presente protocolo es para la evaluación sistematizada ante un paciente con sospecha de patología hepatobiliar, con la finalidad de obtener probabilidades diagnósticas y con base en un índice de sospecha solicitar estudios complementarios más enfocados, optimizando con ello los tiempos de estancia hospitalaria.

Abstract

eROSITA (extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array) is the primary instrument on the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) mission, which was successfully launched on July 13, 2019, from the Baikonour cosmodrome. After the commissioning of the instrument and a subsequent calibration and performance verification phase, eROSITA started a survey of the entire sky on December 13, 2019. By the end of 2023, eight complete scans of the celestial sphere will have been performed, each lasting six months. At the end of this program, the eROSITA all-sky survey in the soft X-ray band (0.2--2.3\,keV) will be about 25 times more sensitive than the ROSAT All-Sky Survey, while in the hard band (2.3--8\,keV) it will provide the first ever true imaging survey of the sky. The eROSITA design driving science is the detection of large samples of galaxy clusters up to redshifts $z>1$ in order to study the large-scale structure of the universe and test cosmological models including Dark Energy. In addition, eROSITA is expected to yield a sample of a few million AGNs, including obscured objects, revolutionizing our view of the evolution of supermassive black holes. The survey will also provide new insights into a wide range of astrophysical phenomena, including X-ray binaries, active stars, and diffuse emission within the Galaxy. Results from early observations, some of which are presented here, confirm that the performance of the instrument is able to fulfil its scientific promise. Abstract

A practical strategy for obtaining novel 5‐seleno‐substituted spirocyclopenta[b]pyridines‐2,5‐dien‐4‐ones and benzo[h]quinolines via radical cyclization is reported. The synthetic protocol explores the reaction between arylethynylpyridines and diorganyl diselenides in acetonitrile as solvent and Oxone® as oxidant at 82 °C. This easy‐to‐handle, eco‐friendly metal‐free approach was carried out under an open atmosphere, affording functionalized organoselenium compounds in good to excellent yields. Control experiments and scale‐up test were performed to demonstrate the efficiency of this methodology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Selenium is an essential trace element in living organisms, and is present in selenoenzymes with antioxidant activity, like glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and thioredoxin reductase (TrxR). The search for small selenium-containing molecules that mimic selenoenzymes is a strong field of research in organic and medicinal chemistry. In this review, we review the synthesis and bioassays of new and known organoselenium compounds with antioxidant activity, covering the last five years. A detailed description of the synthetic procedures and the performed in vitro and in vivo bioassays is presented, highlighting the most active compounds in each series.

Abstract

In this paper, a simple and clean process for the alkylation and arylation of nitrogen-containing heterocycles is reported. The reactions were conducted using the Q-tube® as a non-conventional technology, in water as a green solvent, at overboiling temperature. The developed strategy was used to improve two steps in the total synthesis of caffeine, as reported by Narayan, and then extended to the preparation of N-decorated xanthines. Finally, piperidine, methyl piperazine, and isatine were proven to be suitable substrates for the protocol proposed herein.

Abstract

A general methodology to access valuable 4-(phenylchalcogenyl)tetrazolo[1,5-a]quinolines was developed by the reaction of 2-azidobenzaldehyde with phenylchalcogenylacetonitriles (sulfur and selenium) in the presence of potassium carbonate (20 mol%) as a catalyst. The reactions were conducted using a mixture of dimethylsulfoxide and water (7:3) as solvent at 80 °C for 4 h. This new methodology presents a good functional group tolerance to electron-deficient and electron-rich substituents, affording a total of twelve different 4-(phenylchalcogenyl)tetrazolo[1,5-a]quinolines selectively in moderate to excellent yields. The structure of the synthesized 4-(phenylselanyl)tetrazolo[1,5-a]quinoline was confirmed by X-ray analysis.
