1. PGformer: Proxy-Bridged Game Transformer for Multi-Person Highly Interactive Extreme Motion Prediction

Abstract

Multi-person motion prediction is a challenging task, especially for real-world scenarios of highly interacted persons. Most previous works have been devoted to studying the case of weak interactions (e.g., walking together), in which typically forecasting each human pose in isolation can still achieve good performances. This paper focuses on collaborative motion prediction for multiple persons with extreme motions and attempts to explore the relationships between the highly interactive persons' pose trajectories. Specifically, a novel cross-query attention (XQA) module is proposed to bilaterally learn the cross-dependencies between the two pose sequences tailored for this situation. A proxy unit is additionally introduced to bridge the involved persons, which cooperates with our proposed XQA module and subtly controls the bidirectional spatial information flows. These designs are then integrated into a Transformer-based architecture and the resulting model is called Proxy-bridged Game Transformer (PGformer) for multi-person interactive motion prediction. Its effectiveness has been evaluated on the challenging ExPI dataset, which involves highly interactive actions. Our PGformer consistently outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in both short- and long-term predictions by a large margin. Besides, our approach can also be compatible with the weakly interacted CMU-Mocap and MuPoTS-3D datasets and extended to the case of more than 2 individuals with encouraging results.

Abstract

BackgroundThe second largest Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak began in the Democratic Republic of Congo in July 2018 in North Kivu Province. Data suggest the outbreak is not epidemiologically linked to the 2018 outbreak in Equateur Province, and that independent introduction of Ebola virus (EBOV) into humans occurred. We tested for antibodies to ebolaviruses in febrile patients seeking care in North Kivu Province prior to the EVD outbreak.MethodsPatients were enrolled between May 2017 and April 2018, before the declared start of the outbreak in eastern DRC. Questionnaires were administered to collect demographic and behavioural information to identify risk factors for exposure. Biological samples were evaluated for ebolavirus nucleic acid, and for antibodies to ebolaviruses. Prevalence of exposure was calculated, and demographic factors evaluated for associations with ebolavirus serostatus.ResultsSamples were collected and tested from 272 people seeking care in the Rutshuru Health Zone in North Kivu Province. All patients were negative for filoviruses by PCR. Intial screening by indirect ELISA found that 30 people were reactive to EBOV-rGP. Results were supported by detection of ebolavirus reactive linear peptides using the Serochip platform. Differential screening of all reactive serum samples against the rGP of all six ebolaviruses and Marburg virus (MARV) showed that 29 people exhibited the strongest reactivity to EBOV and one to Bombali virus (BOMV), and western blotting confirmed results. Titers ranged from 1:100 to 1:12,800. Although both sexes and all ages tested positive for antibodies, women were significantly more likely to be positive and the majority of positives were in February 2018.ConclusionsWe provide the first documented evidence of exposure to Ebola virus in people in eastern DRC. We detected antibodies to EBOV in 10% of febrile patients seeking healthcare prior to the declaration of the 2018-2020 outbreak, suggesting early cases may have been missed or exposure ocurred without associated illness. We also report the first known detection of antibodies to BOMV, previously detected in bats in West and East Africa, and show that human exposure to BOMV has occurred. Our data suggest human exposure to ebolaviruses may be more frequent and geographically widespread.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to establish the effect of employee behaviour on organisational competitiveness in the hospitality industry. A sample of 51 employees took part in the study. Results show that employee attitude and perceptions towards various aspects of hotel operation are key antecedents that shape employee behaviour. It was established that employee behaviour has a direct effect on organisational competitiveness. For future improvements, it is recommended that managers within the hospitality establishments make conscious efforts to involve employees in operational decision-making, communicate ideas in a way that is easy to understand, and lastly the salaries of employees should be adjusted periodically following key inflation factors such as the prices of essential commodities.

Abstract

In this paper, we explore two modeling approaches to understanding the dynamics of infectious diseases in the population: equation-based modeling (EBM) and agent-based modeling (ABM). To achieve this, a comparative study of these approaches was conducted and we highlighted their advantages and disadvantages. Two case studies on the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic were carried out using both approaches. The results obtained show that differential equation-based models are faster but still simplistic, while agent-based models require more machine capabilities but are more realistic and very close to biology. Based on these outputs, it seems that the coupling of both approaches could be an interesting compromise.

10. Singaporean Pre-Service Music Teachers' Identities, Motivations and Career Intentions

Abstract

This article explores pre-service music teachers' professional identities during pre-service training. Its focus is a student cohort whose studies are funded by the Singaporean Ministry of Education in return for a commitment--a teaching bond or contract--to work as teachers in schools. An overview of pre-service teacher education and the challenges of attraction and retention in Singapore is followed by discussion of the literature relating to identity formation, with a focus on music teacher and musician identities. Next, analysis and discussion of the findings highlight that participants' teacher identities did not align with their level of performance proficiency. Teacher identity did, however, align with participants' intentions to remain in teaching; participants who defined themselves first and foremost as music teachers were more likely than their peers to plan long-term teaching careers. The article considers the influence of teaching bonds, or contracts, signed by students in advance of their post-secondary studies. It concludes by considering the implications for recruitment and for developing professional identity among pre-service music teachers.

The twelfth Digital News Report from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford reveals new insights about digital news consumption based on a YouGov survey of over 93,000 online news consumers in 46 media markets The report provides evidence that news audiences are becoming more dependent on digital and social platforms, putting further pressure on both ad-based and subscription business models of news organisations at a time when both household and company spending is being squeezed. The report documents how video-based content, distributed via networks such as TikTok, Instagram and YouTube are becoming more important for news, especially in parts of the Global South, while legacy platforms such as Facebook are losing influence. Both interest and trust in news continue to fall in many countries as the connection between journalism and much of the public continues to fray.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) Labour Care Guide (LCG) is a paper-based labour monitoring tool designed to facilitate the implementation of WHO's latest guidelines for effective, respectful care during labour and childbirth. Implementing the LCG into routine intrapartum care requires a strategy that improves healthcare provider practices during labour and childbirth. Such a strategy might optimize the use of Caesarean section (CS), along with potential benefits on the use of other obstetric interventions, maternal and perinatal health outcomes, and women's experience of care. However, the effects of a strategy to implement the LCG have not been evaluated in a randomised trial. This study aims to: (1) develop and optimise a strategy for implementing the LCG (formative phase); and (2) To evaluate the implementation of the LCG strategy compared with usual care (trial phase). METHODS: In the formative phase, we will co-design the LCG strategy with key stakeholders informed by facility assessments and provider surveys, which will be field tested in one hospital. The LCG strategy includes a LCG training program, ongoing supportive supervision from senior clinical staff, and audit and feedback using the Robson Classification. We will then conduct a stepped-wedge, cluster-randomized pilot trial in four public hospitals in India, to evaluate the effect of the LCG strategy intervention compared to usual care (simplified WHO partograph). The primary outcome is the CS rate in nulliparous women with singleton, term, cephalic pregnancies in spontaneous labour (Robson Group 1). Secondary outcomes include clinical and process of care outcomes, as well as women's experience of care outcomes. We will also conduct a process evaluation during the trial, using standardized facility assessments, in-depth interviews and surveys with providers, audits of completed LCGs, labour ward observations and document reviews. An economic evaluation will consider implementation costs

15. Race and leadership in the news media 2023: evidence from five markets

Abstract

In this factsheet, we analyse the percentage of people of colour in top editorial positions at a strategic sample of 100 major online and offline news outlets in five markets across four continents: Brazil, Germany, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Building off work started in 2020, we find in 2023 that only 23% of the 81 top editors across the 100 brands covered are people of colour. In every country, the percentage of people of colour in the general population remains higher than among top editors. There continues to be no simple relationship between the percentages of journalists of colour and top editors of colour. We find some evidence of increasing racial diversity among top news editors in South Africa and the United States – but it continues to be the case that there are few or no top editors of colour in our sample in three countries.

We then adapt these designs to a Transformer-based architecture and devise a simple yet effective end-to-end framework called proxy-bridged game Transformer (PGformer) for multi-person interactive motion prediction. The effectiveness of our method has been evaluated on the challenging ExPI dataset, which involves highly interactive actions. We show that our PGformer consistently outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in both short- and long-term predictions by a large margin. Besides, our approach can also be compatible with the weakly interacted CMU-Mocap and MuPoTS-3D datasets and achieve encouraging results. Our code will become publicly available upon acceptance.

22. Using Blogging to Enhance the Initiation of Students into Academic Research

Abstract

For the net-generation students learning in a Web 2.0 world, research is often equated with Googling and approached with a mindset accustomed to cut-and-paste practices. Recognizing educators' concern over such students' learning dispositions on the one hand, and the educational affordances of blogging on the other, this study examines the use of blogging to initiate students into academic research at the tertiary level. It focuses on the experiences of three students from a third-year music class working on their research paper with blog-based supervision provided by the teacher. The course, in a hybrid fashion, combined face-to-face lectures and tutorials with blog sharing and discussion. The students' individually-owned blogs were specifically used as their research diaries in which they logged in their work in progress, they then received input from both the teacher and fellow students. Based on the researcher's self-evaluation of the teaching-supervising process, an analysis of the students' blog discourse, and students' survey feedback, this article offers useful insights and suggestions for educators interested in either using or researching on blogging as a means to develop students' research skills and understanding. 25. Harnessing Distributed Musical Expertise through Edublogging

Abstract

The pedagogical potential of edublogging--blogging used as an educational tool and strategy--in music teaching has been explored in two previous studies; a third exploration has now been conducted. Recognising the social and contextual dimensions of knowledge and of the learning process, I reflect on all three experiences from a distributed cognition perspective, as opposed to a traditional cognitivist one. First, the edublogging scenario in each case will be seen through the lens of distributed cognition in respect of the nature of its learning community and culture. Then, these instructional endeavours are evaluated against the distributed cognition ideals. The pedagogy discussed here leverages the potential of edublogging to draw on distributed musical expertise. Apart from being in line with the current trend in learning theories towards emphasising distributed cognition and community based learning, such a pedagogical strategy in part also offers a viable solution to the challenge of addressing an increasingly expanding curriculum, whether in music or other subjects, due to knowledge explosion and the pressures of globalisation. Abstract

The eleventh Digital News Report from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford reveals new insights about digital news consumption based on a YouGov survey of over 93,000 online news consumers in 46 media markets The report provides evidence that much of the public is turning away from – or at least selectively avoiding – the news. The report documents ways in which the connection between journalism and much of the public may be fraying, including a fall in trust following last year’s positive bump, and declining interest in news. Our survey finds that younger audiences have a weaker connection with news brands, and are increasingly accessing the news via platforms such as TikTok. Despite significant increases in the proportion paying for online news in a handful of richer countries there are signs that overall growth may be levelling off.

Abstract

Credible monitoring of remote workers presents unique challenges that may reduce the benefits of formal organization for their management. We consider whether increasing the salience of monitor productivity without changing incentive contracts or monitoring technology leads to changes in remote worker performance. Results from a field experiment run among multi-dimensional task workers in Kenya demonstrate that increasing the visibility of monitor activity improves performance on task dimensions not being directly paid for. Our evidence is consistent with the importance of conspicuous monitoring when managers and workers are not co-located.

Abstract

In this paper, we explore two modeling approaches to understanding the dynamics of infectious diseases in the population: equation-based modeling (EBM) and agent-based modeling (ABM). To achieve this, a comparative study of these approaches was conducted and we highlighted their advantages and disadvantages. Two case studies on the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic were carried out using both approaches. The results obtained show that differential equation-based models are faster but still simplistic, while agent-based models require more machine capabilities but are more realistic and very close to biology. Based on these outputs, it seems that the coupling of both approaches could be an interesting compromise. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Nephrotic syndrome (NS) is a leading cause of chronic kidney disease. We found recessive NOS1AP variants in two families with early-onset NS by exome sequencing. Overexpression of wild-type (WT) NOS1AP, but not cDNA constructs bearing patient variants, increased active CDC42 and promoted filopodia and podosome formation. Pharmacologic inhibition of CDC42 or its effectors, formin proteins, reduced NOS1AP-induced filopodia formation. NOS1AP knockdown reduced podocyte migration rate (PMR), which was rescued by overexpression of WT Nos1ap but not by constructs bearing patient variants. PMR in NOS1AP knockdown podocytes was also rescued by constitutively active CDC42Q61L or the formin DIAPH3 Modeling a NOS1AP patient variant in knock-in human kidney organoids revealed malformed glomeruli with increased apoptosis. Nos1apEx3-/Ex3- mice recapitulated the human phenotype, exhibiting proteinuria, foot process effacement, and glomerulosclerosis. These findings demonstrate that recessive NOS1AP variants impair CDC42/DIAPH-dependent actin remodeling, cause aberrant organoid glomerulogenesis, and lead to a glomerulopathy in humans and mice.

BACKGROUND: The spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization on 11th March 2020. Since then there has been a rapid rise in development of maternal and perinatal health guidelines related to COVID-19. The aim of this project was to develop a database of Australian and international recommendations relating to antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum care of women during the COVID-19 pandemic, in order to identify inconsistencies in clinical guidance. METHODS: We conducted weekly web searches from 30th March to 15th May 2020 to identify recommendations pertaining to the care of women during pregnancy, labour and postpartum period from national or international professional societies, specialist colleges, Ministries of Health, Australian state and territory governments, and international guideline development organisations. Individual recommendations were extracted and classified according to intervention type, time period, and patient population. Findings were reported using descriptive analysis, with areas of consensus and non-consensus identified. RESULTS: We identified 81 guidelines from 48 different organisations. Generally, there was high consensus across guidelines for specific interventions. However, variable guidance was identified on the use of nitrous oxide during labour, administration of antenatal corticosteroids, neonatal isolation after birth, labour and birth companions, and the use of disease modifying agents for treating COVID-19. CONCLUSION: Discrepancies between different guideline development organisations creates challenges for maternity care clinicians during the COVID-19 pandemic. Collating recommendations and keeping up-to-date with the latest guidance can help clinicians provide the best possible care to pregnant women and their babies.

Abstract

ASEAN-4 is an emerging market that experienced promising developed financial sector in recent years. The interaction between stock prices and macroeconomic variables has been extensively researched by researchers. By using secondary monthly ASEAN-4 data from January 2009 to December 2017 and using the ARDL estimation, it was found that exchange rates and GDP had a long-term positive effect on stock prices. While inflation, current account, and GDP have no effect on stock price formation. It is also found that there are co-integration in the short and long term in four ASEAN-4 countries. To strengthen the results of co-integration, using "one to one" interactions concluded that inflation, current accounts and interest rates have a very small contribution to the share price in ASEAN-4.

Abstract

A study was conducted to analyze the transient reduction kinetics associated with surface rhodium oxide by gaseous H2 and Co. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy was carried out to perform the analysis. The rhodium films were made using disks cut from gold foils. The gas-phase composition was observed by leaking the reactor gas into a quadrupole mass spectrometer. Experimental results indicated the effectiveness of Raman spectroscopy in in situ surface chemical characterization studies.

Contains fulltext : 215771.pdf (publisher's version ) (Closed access), Recently, recessive mutations of MAGI2 were identified as a cause of steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS) in humans and mice. To further delineate the pathogenesis of MAGI2 loss of function, we generated stable knockout lines for the two zebrafish orthologues magi2a and magi2b by CRISPR/Cas9. We also developed a novel assay for the direct detection of proteinuria in zebrafish independent of transgenic background. Whereas knockout of magi2b did not yield a nephrotic syndrome phenotype, magi2a(-/-) larvae developed ascites, periorbital edema, and proteinuria, as indicated by increased excretion of low molecular weight protein. Electron microscopy demonstrated extensive podocyte foot process effacement. As in human SRNS, we observed genotype/phenotype correlation, with edema onset occurring earlier in zebrafish with truncating alleles (5-6 days post fertilization) versus hypomorphic alleles (19-20 days post fertilization). Paradoxically, corticosteroid treatment exacerbated the phenotype, with earlier onset of edema. In contrast, treatment with cyclosporine A or tacrolimus had no significant effect. Although RhoA signaling has been implicated as a downstream mediator of MAGI2 activity, targeting of the RhoA pathway did not modify the nephrotic syndrome phenotype. In the first CRISPR/Cas9 zebrafish knockout model of SRNS, we found that corticosteroids may have a paradoxical effect in the setting of specific genetic mutations.
