In this study, we use archival data from HST, Chandra, XMM-Newton, and Swift-XRT, to probe the nature of 9 (X1-X9) candidate ULXs in NGC 1672. Our study focuses on using the precise source positions obtained via improved astrometry based on {\it Chandra} and HST observations to search for and identify optical counterparts for these ULXs.Unique optical counterparts are identified for X2 an{d X6; two potential counterparts were determined for X1, X5 and X7 within the respective error radii while no optical counterparts were found for the remaining four sources. Flaring episodes in blazars represent one of the most violent processes observed in extra-galactic objects. Studies of such events shed light on the energetics of the physical processes occurring in the innermost regions of blazars, which cannot otherwise be resolved by any current instruments. In this work, we present some of the largest and most rapid flares captured in the optical band in the blazars 3C 279, OJ 49, S4 0954+658, TXS 1156+295 and PG 1553+113. The source flux was observed to increase by nearly ten times within a timescale of a few weeks. We applied several methods of time series analysis and symmetry analysis. Moreover, we also performed searches for periodicity in the light curves of 3C 279, OJ 49 and PG 1553+113 using the Lomb-Scargle method and found plausible indications of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs). In particular, the 33- and 22-day periods found in 3C 279, i.e. a 3:2 ratio, are intriguing. These violent events might originate from magnetohydrodynamical instabilities near the base of the jets, triggered by processes modulated by the magnetic field of the accretion disc. We report the results of new transit observations for the three hot Jupiter-like planets HATP-36b, HATP-56b and WASP-52b respectively. Transit timing variations (TTVs) are presented for these systems based on observations that span the period 2016 - 2020. The data were collected with the 0.6 m telescope at Adiyaman University (ADYU60, Turkey) and the 1.0 m telescope at T\"UB\.ITAK National Observatory (TUG, Turkey). Global fits were performed to the combined light curves for each system along with the corresponding radial velocity (RV) data taken from the literature. The extracted parameters (for all three systems) are found to be consistent with the values from previous studies. Through fits to the combined mid-transit times data from our observations and the data available in the literature, an updated linear ephemeris is obtained for each system. Although a number of potential outliers are noted in the respective O-C diagrams, the majority of the data are consistent within the 3$\sigma$ confidence level implying a lack of convincing evidence for the existence of additional objects in the systems studied., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We describe results of a planetary defense exercise conducted during the close approach to Earth by the near-Earth asteroid (99942) Apophis during 2020 December–2021 March. The planetary defense community has been conducting observational campaigns since 2017 to test the operational readiness of the global planetary defense capabilities. These community-led global exercises were carried out with the support of NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office and the International Asteroid Warning Network. The Apophis campaign is the third in our series of planetary defense exercises. The goal of this campaign was to recover, track, and characterize Apophis as a potential impactor to exercise the planetary defense system including observations, hypothetical risk assessment and risk prediction, and hazard communication. Based on the campaign results, we present lessons learned about our ability to observe and model a potential impactor. Data products derived from astrometric observations were available for inclusion in our risk assessment model almost immediately, allowing real-time updates to the impact probability calculation and possible impact locations. An early NEOWISE diameter measurement provided a significant improvement in the uncertainty on the range of hypothetical impact outcomes. The availability of different characterization methods such as photometry, spectroscopy, and radar provided robustness to our ability to assess the potential impact risk.

Black hole transients are known to undergo spectral transitions that form q-shaped tracks on a hardness intensity diagram. In this work, we use archival RXTE data to extract a characteristic minimal timescale for the spectral states in GX 339-4 for the 2002-3, and 2010 outbursts. We use the extracted timescale to construct an intensity variability diagram for each outburst. This new diagram is comparable to the traditional hardness intensity diagram and offers the potential for probing the underlying dynamics associated with the evolution of the relevant emission regions in black hole transients. We confirm this possibility by connecting the minimal timescale with the inner disk radius, $R_{in}$ (estimated from spectral fits), and demonstrate a positive correlation between these variables as the system evolves through its spectral transitions. Furthermore, we probe the relation between the minimal timescale and the break frequencies extracted from the power spectral densities. Lastly, we examine a possible link between the extracted timescale and a traditional measure of variability i.e., the root mean square, determined directly from the power spectra., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present follow-up photometric and spectroscopic observations, and subsequent analysis of Gaia20eae. This source triggered photometric alerts during 2020 after showing a $\sim$3 mag increase in its brightness. Its Gaia Alert light curve showed the shape of a typical eruptive young star. We carried out observations to confirm Gaia20eae as an eruptive young star and classify it. Its pre-outburst spectral energy distribution shows that Gaia20eae is a moderately embedded Class II object with $L_\mathrm{bol} = 7.22$ L$_\odot$. The color-color and color-magnitude diagrams indicate that the evolution in the light curve is mostly gray. Multiple epochs of the H$\alpha$ line profile suggest an evolution of the accretion rate and winds. The near-infrared spectra display several emission lines, a feature typical of EXor-type eruptive young stars. We estimated the mass accretion rate during the dimming phase to be $\dot{M} = 3-8 \times 10^{-7}$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, higher than typical T Tauri stars of similar mass and comparable to other EXors. Recent results for asteroid rotation periods from the TESS mission showed how strongly previous studies have underestimated the number of slow rotators, revealing the importance of studying those targets. For most slowly rotating asteroids (those with P > 12 h), no spin and shape model is available because of observation selection effects. This hampers determination of their thermal parameters and accurate sizes. Also, it is still unclear whether signatures of different surface material properties can be seen in thermal inertia determined from mid-infrared thermal flux fitting. Aims. We continue our campaign in minimising selection effects among main belt asteroids. Our targets are slow rotators with low light-curve amplitudes. Our goal is to provide their scaled spin and shape models together with thermal inertia, albedo, and surface roughness to complete the statistics. Methods. Rich multi-apparition datasets of dense light curves are supplemented with data from Kepler and TESS spacecrafts. In addition to data in the visible range, we also use thermal data from infrared space observatories (mainly IRAS, Akari and WISE) in a combined optimisation process using the Convex Inversion Thermophysical Model. This novel method has so far been applied to only a few targets, and therefore in this work we further validate the method itself. Results. We present the models of 16 slow rotators, including two updated models. All provide good fits to both thermal and visible data.The obtained sizes are on average accurate at the 5% precision level, with diameters found to be in the range from 25 to 145 km. Our latest shadow path prediction was favourable to a large region in Europe. Observations were arranged in a broad region inside the nominal shadow path. Series of images were obtained with 29 telescopes throughout Europe and from six of them (five in Spain and one in Greece) we detected the occultation. This is the fourth centaur, besides Chariklo, Chiron, and Bienor, for which a multichord stellar occultation is reported. By means of an elliptical fit to the occultation chords, we obtained the limb of 2002 GZ32 during the occultation, resulting in an ellipse with axes of 305 ± 17 km × 146 ± 8 km. From this limb, thanks to a rotational light curve obtained shortly after the occultation, we derived the geometric albedo of 2002 GZ32 (pV = 0.043 ± 0.007) and a 3D ellipsoidal shape with axes 366 km × 306 km × 120 km. This shape is not fully consistent with a homogeneous body in hydrostatic equilibrium for the known rotation period of 2002 GZ32. The size (albedo) obtained from the occultation is respectively smaller (greater) than that derived from the radiometric technique but compatible within error bars. Twin binaries were identified among the eclipsing binaries with $\delta$>--30$^\circ$ listed in the ASAS catalog. In addition to the known twin binaries in the literature, 68 new systems have been identified, photometric and spectroscopic observations were done. Color, spectral type, temperature, ratio of radii and masses of the components have been derived and presented. Including 12 twin binary systems that exist in both ASAS and the catalogue of absolute parameters of detached eclipsing binary stars, a total of 80 twin detached binary systems have been statistically studied. A comparison of the spectral type distribution of the twins with those of detached eclipsing binary stars in the ASAS database showed that the spectral type distribution of twins is similar to that of detached systems. This result has been interpreted as there is no special formation mechanism for twins than for normal detached binaries. All rights reserved., Binary black hole (BH) central engine description for the unique blazar OJ 287 predicted that the next secondary BH impact-induced bremsstrahlung flare should peak on 2019 July 31. This prediction was based on detailed general relativistic modeling of the secondary BH trajectory around the primary BH and its accretion disk. The expected flare was termed the Eddington flare to commemorate the centennial celebrations of now-famous solar eclipse observations to test general relativity by Sir Arthur Eddington. We analyze the multi-epoch Spitzer observations of the expected flare between 2019 July 31 and 2019 September 6, as well as baseline observations during 2019 February-March. Observed Spitzer flux density variations during the predicted outburst time display a strong similarity with the observed optical pericenter flare from OJ 287 during 2007 September. The predicted flare appears comparable to the 2007 flare after subtracting the expected higher base-level Spitzer flux densities at 3.55 and 4.49 mu m compared to the optical R-band. Comparing the 2019 and 2007 outburst lightcurves and the previously calculated predictions, we find that the Eddington flare arrived within 4 hr of the predicted time. Our Spitzer observations are well consistent with the presence of a nano-Hertz gravitational-wave emitting spinning massive binary BH that inspirals along a general relativistic eccentric orbit in OJ 287. These multi-epoch Spitzer observations provide a parametric constraint on the celebrated BH no-hair theorem., We thank Sean Carey for useful discussions on Spitzer data. We investigate the prompt emission and the afterglow properties of short-duration gamma-ray burst (sGRB) 130603B and another eight sGRB events during 2012-2015, observed by several multiwavelength facilities including the Gran Canarias Telescope 10.4 m telescope. Prompt emission high energy data of the events were obtained by INTEGRAL-SPI-ACS, Swift-BAT, and Fermi-GBM satellites. The prompt emission data by INTEGRAL in the energy range of 0.1-10 MeV for sGRB 130603B, sGRB 140606A, sGRB 140930B, sGRB 141212A, and sGRB 151228A do not show any signature of the extended emission or precursor activity and their spectral and temporal properties are similar to those seen in case of other short bursts. For sGRB 130603B, our new afterglow photometric data constrain the pre-jet-break temporal decay due to denser temporal coverage. For sGRB 130603B, the afterglow light curve, containing both our new and previously published photometric data is broadly consistent with the ISM afterglow model. Modeling of the host galaxies of sGRB 130603B and sGRB 141212A using the LePHARE software supports a scenario in which the environment of the burst is undergoing moderate star formation activity. From the inclusion of our late-time data for eight other sGRBs we are able to: place tight constraints on the non-detection of the afterglow, host galaxy, or any underlying 'kilonova' emission. We have studied the ASAS catalogue in search of detached binary systems with identical components. The selected systems were photometrically and spectroscopically observed for spectral type determination. The light curves available in the ASAS database were analyzed and the light curve parameters once combined with the spectroscopic information yielded the spectral types of the binary stars in our twin candidate list. The spectral type distribution of twin binaries has shown a clear peak at the F-spectral type. Moreover, it is noteworthy that the number of twins with the A-spectral type is comparable to those with the G-spectral type, which is in contrast to previous studies.

A recent study of a small sample of X-ray binaries (XRBs) suggests a significant softening of spectra of neutron star (NS) binaries as compared to black hole (BH) binaries in the luminosity range 10$^{34}$ - 10$^{37}$ erg/s. This softening is quantified as an anticorrelation between the spectral index and the 0.5 - 10 keV X-ray luminosity. We extend the study to significantly lower luminosities (i.e., $\sim$ a few $\times$ $10^{30}$ erg/s) for a larger sample of XRBs. We find evidence for a significant anticorrelation between the spectral index and the luminosity for a group of NS binaries in the luminosity range 10$^{32}$ to 10$^{33}$ erg/s. Our analysis suggests a steep slope for the correlation i.e., -2.12 $\pm$ 0.63. In contrast, BH binaries do not exhibit the same behavior. We examine the possible dichotomy between NS and BH binaries in terms of a Comptonization model that assumes a feedback mechanism between an optically thin hot corona and an optically thick cool source of soft photons. We gauge the NS-BH dichotomy by comparing the extracted corona temperatures, Compton-y parameters and the Comptonization amplification factors: The mean temperature of the NS group is found to be significantly lower than the equivalent temperature for the BH group. The emission-line dwarf galaxy NGC 3413 is known to host a bright X-ray source near its optical center. The 0.3-10 keV luminosity of this source is estimated to be approximately 10$^{39}$ erg$s^{-1}$ potentially qualifying it as an ultra-luminous X-ray (ULX) source. A recent XMM-Newton observation suggests that the source is not point-like, and instead, is more likely a composite of point-like sources with extended and/or diffuse emission. The spectral and temporal features of the bright region are similar to those associated with the so-called broadened disk state of ULXs. Based on a multi-color blackbody spectral fit, we estimate the mass of the bright source to be in the range 3 - 20M$_{\odot}$. Potential optical counterparts are also explored with the aid of available SDSS and PanStars data., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Ortiz, José Luis et. al., Haumea-one of the four known trans-Neptunian dwarf planets- is a very elongated and rapidly rotating body1-3. In contrast to other dwarf planets4-6, its size, shape, albedo and density are not well constrained. The Centaur Chariklo was the first body other than a giant planet known to have a ring system7, and the Centaur Chiron was later found to possess something similar to Chariklo's rings8,9. Here we report observations from multiple Earth-based observatories of Haumea passing in front of a distant star (a multichord stellar occultation). Secondary events observed around the main body of Haumea are consistent with the presence of a ring with an opacity of 0.5, width of 70 kilometres and radius of about 2,287 kilometres. The ring is coplanar with both Haumea's equator and the orbit of its satellite Hi'iaka. The radius of the ring places it close to the 3:1 mean-motion resonance with Haumea's spin period-that is, Haumea rotates three times on its axis in the time that a ring particle completes one revolution. The occultation by the main body provides an instantaneous elliptical projected shape with axes of about 1,704 kilometres and 1,138 kilometres. Combined with rotational light curves, the occultation constrains the three-dimensional orientation of Haumea and its triaxial shape, which is inconsistent with a homogeneous body in hydrostatic equilibrium. Haumea's largest axis is at least 2,322 kilometres, larger than previously thought, implying an upper limit for its density of 1,885 kilograms per cubic metre and a geometric albedo of 0.51, both smaller than previous estimates1,10,11. In addition, this estimate of the density of Haumea is closer to that of Pluto than are previous estimates, in line with expectations. We report optical photometric and polarimetric observations of the blazar OJ 287 gathered during 2016/17. The high level of activity, noticed after the General Relativity Centenary flare, is argued to be part of the follow-up flares that exhibited high levels of polarization and originated in the primary black hole jet. We propose that the follow-up flares were induced as a result of accretion disk perturbations, travelling from the site of impact towards the primary SMBH. The timings inferred from our observations allowed us to estimate the propagation speed of these perturbations. Additionally, we make predictions for the future brightness of OJ 287. © 2017 by the authors.

By comparing the ratio of flux densities in the X-ray and ultraviolet (UV) wavebands by way of the spectral optical-X-ray index, alpha(ox), we explore the relation between the emissions in the respective wavebands for a number of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) with known optical counterparts. We present a significant (anti) correlation between aox and the L(2500 angstrom)-UV luminosity. In comparison with low-z active galactic nuclei (AGNs) for which a similar correlation is observed, the ULX alpha(ox) indices follow a steeper slope albeit with a large uncertainty. The results are also compared with a small sample of dwarf-galaxy data consisting of a mixture of broadline candidate AGNs and "composites." A number of these sources follow the steeper slope of the ULX data, potentially hinting at an intrinsic similarity of these sources to ULXs. We are able to reproduce the general trend of the ULX correlation with the use of a multicolor accretion disk coupled to a hot corona of Comptonizing electrons.

Using a wavelet decomposition technique, we have extracted the Hurst exponent for a sample of 46 long and 22 short Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) aboard the Fermi satellite. This exponent is a scaling parameter that provides a measure of long-range behavior in a time series. The mean Hurst exponent for the short GRBs is significantly smaller than that for the long GRBs. The separation may serve as an unbiased criterion for distinguishing short and long GRBs.

We analyse the light curve in the R band of the blazar OJ287, gathered during the 2015/2016 observing season. We did a search for quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) using several methods over a wide range of timescales. No statistically significant periods were found in the high-frequency domain both in the ground-based data and in Kepler observations. In the longer-period domain, the Lomb–Scargle periodogram revealed several peaks above the 99% significance level. The longest one—about 95 days—corresponds to the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) period of the more massive black hole. The 43-day period could be an alias, or it can be attributed to accretion in the form of a two-armed spiral wave.

We present a direct link between the minimum variability time-scales extracted through a wavelet decomposition and the rise times of the shortest pulses extracted via fits of 34 Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) light curves comprised of 379 pulses. Pulses used in this study were fitted with lognormal functions, whereas the wavelet technique used employs a multiresolution analysis that does not rely on identifying distinct pulses. By applying a corrective filter to published data fitted with pulses, we demonstrate agreement between these two independent techniques and offer a method for distinguishing signal from noise.

Spectral lag, which is defined as the difference in time of arrival of high and low energy photons, is a common feature in Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs). Previous investigations have shown a correlation between this lag and the isotropic peak luminosity for long duration bursts. However, most of the previous investigations used lags extracted in the observer-frame only. In this work (based on a sample of 43 Swift long GRBs with known redshifts), we present an analysis of the lag-luminosity relation in the GRB source-frame. Our analysis indicates a higher degree of correlation -0.82 +/- 0.05 (chance probability of ~ 5.5 x 10^-5) between the spectral lag and the isotropic peak luminosity, Liso, with a best-fit power-law index of -1.2 +/- 0.2, such that Liso proportional to lag^-1.2. In addition, there is an anti-correlation between the source-frame spectral lag and the source-frame peak energy of the burst spectrum, E_pk(1+z).

Results of modeling the spectra of two supernovae SN 2008D and SN 2006aj related to the X-ray flash XRF 080109 and gamma-ray burst GRB / XRF 060218, respectively, are studied. The spectra were obtained with the 6-meter BTA telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 6.48 and 27.61 days after the explosion of SN 2008D, and in 2.55 and 3.55 days after the explosion of SN 2006aj. The spectra were interpreted in the Sobolev approximation with the SYNOW code. An assumption about the presence of envelopes around the progenitor stars is confirmed by an agreement between the velocities of lines interpreted as hydrogen and helium, and the empiric power-law velocity drop with time for the envelopes of classic core-collapse supernovae. Detection of a P Cyg profile of the H-beta line in the spectra of optical afterglows of GRBs can be a determinative argument in favor of this hypothesis.

WOS: 000262332800003 The spectra of the supernova SN2006aj identified with the X-ray. ash (XRF) and gammaray burst XRF/GRB 060218/SN2006aj taken with the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences are found to exhibit features, which can be interpreted as hydrogen lines. Such features indicate the existence of a stellar-wind envelope around the massive star the progenitor of the gamma-ray burst. The results of our modeling of two early spectra taken with the 6-m telescope 2.55 and 3.55 days after the explosion of the type-Ic supernova SN2006aj (z=0.0331) are reported. The spectra are modeled in the Sobolev approximation using SYNOW code [1, 2]. The spectra of the optical afterglow of the X-ray. ash XRF/GRB 060218 are found to exhibit spectral features, which can be interpreted as: (1) the P Cyg-profile of the H alpha line for the velocity of 33000 km/s-a broad and small deformation of the continuum in the wavelength interval 5600-6600 A for the first epoch (2.55 days) and (2) a part of the P Cyg-profile of the Ha line in absorption blueshifted by 24000 km/s-a broad spectral feature with a minimum at 6100 A (rest wavelength) for the second epoch (3.55 days). Given earlier observations made with the 6-m telescope and the spectra taken with other telescopes (ESO Lick, ESO VLT and NOT) prior to February 23, 2006, it can be concluded that we are observing the evolution of optical spectra of the type Ic massive supernova SN2006aj during its transition from the short phase with the "shock breakout" into the external layers of the stellar-wind envelope to the spectra of the phase of rising supernova luminosity, which corresponds to radiative heating. We are the first to observe the signs of hydrogen in the spectra of a gamma-ray afterglow. We present the results of two Chandra X-ray Observatory ( CXO) observations of TeV gamma-ray source HESS J1741-302A/B. Our analysis also includes GeV gamma-ray and radio data. We investigate whether there is any connection between HESS J1741-302A/B and the sources seen at lower energies. One of the brightest X-ray sources in the HESS J1741-302B field, CXOU J174112.1-302908, appears to be associated with a low-mass star (possibly representing a quiescent LMXB or CV), hence, it is unlikely to be a source of TeV gamma-rays. In the same field we detected X-rays from WR 98a, which is likely to be a colliding wind binary with massive stars, however, no TeV emission has been reported so far from such systems although a predictions have been made. Finally, Suzaku source J1740.5-3014 (which is not covered by the CXO observations) appears to be a hard X-ray source detected by INTERGAL ISGRI which supports the magnetized CV classification and also makes its association with the TeV emission unlikely. The young pulsar, undetected in X-rays and located near the CV, may be the contributor of relativistic particles responsible for the TeV emission. Alternatively, HESS J1741-302 could be a new type of accelerator, which is dark at lower energies., Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the spectral analysis of an 87~ks \emph{XMM-Newton} observation of Draco, a nearby dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Of the approximately 35 robust X-ray source detections, we focus our attention on the brightest of these sources, for which we report X-ray and multiwavelength parameters. While most of the sources exhibit properties consistent with AGN, few of them possess characteristics of LMXBs and CVs. Our analysis puts constraints on population of X-ray sources with $L_X>3\times10^{33}$~erg~s$^{-1}$ in Draco suggesting that there are no actively accreting BH and NS binaries. However, we find 4 sources that could be LMXBs/CVs in quiescent state associated with Draco. We also place constraints on the central black hole luminosity and on a dark matter decay signal around 3.5~keV., Accepted for publication in ApJ

Long Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are the most dramatic examples of massive stellar deaths, usually associated with supernovae. They release ultra-relativistic jets producing non-thermal emission through synchrotron radiation as they interact with the surrounding medium. Here we report observations of the peculiar GRB 101225A (the "Christmas burst"). Its gamma-ray emission was exceptionally long and followed by a bright X-ray transient with a hot thermal component and an unusual optical couuterpart. During the first 10 days, the optical emission evolved as an expanding, cooling blackbody after which an additional component, consistent with a faint supernova, emerged. We determine its distance to 1.6 Gpc by fitting the spectral-energy distribution and light curve of the optical emission with a GRB-supernova template. Deep optical observations may have revealed a faint, unresolved host galaxy. Our proposed progenitor is a helium star-neutron star merger that underwent a common envelope phase expelling its hydrogen envelope. The resulting explosion created a GRB-like jet which gets thermalized by interacting with the dense, previously ejected material and thus creating the observed black-body, until finally the emission from the supernova dominated. An alternative explanation is a minor body falling onto a neutron star io the Galaxy

The observations of the exceptionally bright gamma-ray burst (GRB) 130427A by the Large Area Telescope aboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope provide constraints on the nature of such unique astrophysical sources. GRB 130427A had the largest fluence, highest-energy photon (95 GeV), longest $\gamma$-ray duration (20 hours), and one of the largest isotropic energy releases ever observed from a GRB. Temporal and spectral analyses of GRB 130427A challenge the widely accepted model that the non-thermal high-energy emission in the afterglow phase of GRBs is synchrotron emission radiated by electrons accelerated at an external shock., Comment: 30 pages, 6 figures. We present multiwavelength observations of the afterglow of GRB 130427A, the brightest (in total fluence) gamma-ray burst of the past 29 years. Optical spectroscopy from Gemini-North reveals the redshift of the GRB to be z=0.340, indicating that its unprecedented brightness is primarily the result of its relatively close proximity to Earth; the intrinsic luminosities of both the GRB and its afterglow are not extreme in comparison to other bright GRBs. We present a large suite of multiwavelength observations spanning from 300 s to 130 d after the burst and demonstrate that the afterglow shows relatively simple, smooth evolution at all frequencies with no significant late-time flaring or rebrightening activity. The entire dataset from 1 GHz to 10 GeV can be modeled as synchrotron emission from a combination of reverse and forward shocks in good agreement with the standard afterglow model, providing strong support to the applicability of the underlying theory and clarifying the nature of the GeV emission observed to last for minutes to hours following other very bright GRBs. A tenuous, wind-stratified circumburst density profile is required by the observations, suggesting a massive-star progenitor with a low mass-loss rate, perhaps due to low metallicity. GRBs similar in nature to GRB 130427A, inhabiting low-density media and exhibiting strong reverse shocks, are probably not uncommon but may have been difficult to recognize in the past due to their relatively faint late-time radio emission; more such events should be found in abundance by the new generation of sensitive radio and millimeter instruments., Comment: Accepted to ApJ. WOS: 000314944100015, We present the results of a study of non-nuclear discrete sources in a sample of three nearby spiral galaxies (NGC 4395, NGC 4736, and NGC 4258) based on XMM-Newton archival data supplemented with Chandra data for spectral and timing analyses. A total of 75 X-ray sources have been detected within the D-25 regions of the target galaxies. The large collecting area of XMM-Newton makes the statistics sufficient to obtain spectral fitting for 16 (about 20%) of these sources. Compiling the extensive archival exposures available, we were able to obtain the detailed spectral shapes of diverse classes of point sources. We have also studied temporal properties of these luminous sources. Eleven of them are found to show short-term (less than 80 ks) variation while eight of them show long-term variation within factors of similar to 2-5 during a time interval of similar to 2-12 years. Timing analysis provides strong evidence that most of these sources are accreting X-ray binary systems. One source that has properties different from others was suspected to be a supernova remnant, and our follow-up optical observation confirmed this. Curvature effects in Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have long been a source of considerable interest. In a collimated relativistic GRB jet, photons that are off-axis relative to the observer arrive at later times than on-axis photons and are also expected to be spectrally softer. In this work, we invoke a relatively simple kinematic two-shell collision model for a uniform jet profile and compare its predictions to GRB prompt-emission data for observations that have been attributed to curvature effects such as the peak-flux--peak-frequency relation, i.e., the relation between the $\nu$F$_\nu$ flux and the spectral peak, E$_{pk}$ in the decay phase of a GRB pulse, and spectral lags. In addition, we explore the behavior of pulse widths with energy. The astrophysical journal 763(2), 71 (2013). doi:10.1088/0004-637X/763/2/71, We report on the multiwavelength observations of the bright, long gamma-ray burst GRB 110731A, by the Fermi and Swift observatories, and by the MOA and GROND optical telescopes. The analysis of the prompt phase reveals that GRB 110731A shares many features with bright Large Area Telescope bursts observed by Fermi during the first three years on-orbit: a light curve with short time variability across the whole energy range during the prompt phase, delayed onset of the emission above 100 MeV, extra power-law component and temporally extended high-energy emission. In addition, this is the first GRB for which simultaneous GeV, X-ray, and optical data are available over multiple epochs beginning just after the trigger time and extending for more than 800 s, allowing temporal and spectral analysis in different epochs that favor emission from the forward shock in a wind-type medium. The observed temporally extended GeV emission is most likely part of the high-energy end of the afterglow emission. Both the single-zone pair transparency constraint for the prompt signal and the spectral and temporal analysis of the forward-shock afterglow emission independently lead to an estimate of the bulk Lorentz factor of the jet Γ ~ 500-550., Published by Univ.11032, Chicago, Ill. From a sample of GRBs detected by the $Fermi$ and $Swift$ missions, we have extracted the minimum variability time scales for temporal structures in the light curves associated with the prompt emission and X-ray flares. A comparison of this variability time scale with pulse parameters such as rise times,determined via pulse-fitting procedures, and spectral lags, extracted via the cross-correlation function (CCF), indicate a tight correlation between these temporal features for both the X-ray flares and the prompt emission. WOS: 000280929400101, An optical search was carried out for supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Sc type nearby spiral galaxy M 74, using ground-based observations at the TUBITAK National Observatory (TUG, Antalya/Turkey) and the Special Astrophysics Observatory (SAO, Russia). Observations were supplemented by the spectral analysis of archived X-ray data from XMM-Newton and Chandra. The survey of M74 covered similar to 9 arcmin(2) with [S II], H alpha, and their continuum filters. Interference filter images of M 74 were obtained the with the 1.5 m Russian Turkish Telescope (RTT150) at TUG and spectral data taken with the 6 m Bolsoi Azimuthal Telescope (BTA) at SAO. The emission nebulae with continuum-subtracted line ratio values of [S II]lambda lambda 6716,6731 /H alpha >= 0.4 are identified as SNRs. Followup spectroscopy confirmed optical SNR identifications. We have identified nine new SNR candidates in M 74 with [S II]/H alpha >= 0.4 as the basic criterion. The [S II]/H alpha ratio ranges from 0.40 to 0.91 and H alpha intensities from 2.8 x 10(-15) erg cm(-2) s(-1) to 1.7 x 10(-14) erg cm(-2) s(-1). We also present spectral follow-up observations of these SNR candidates, however, we are able to spectrally confirm only three of them (SNR2, SNR3, and SNR5). The lack of confirmation for the rest might come from contamination by the nearby H II emission regions, as well as from the inaccurate positioning of the long slit on these objects. In addition, we searched the XMM-Newton and Chandra Observatory archival data for the X-ray counterparts to the optically identified candidates. We find positional coincidence with only three SNR candidates, SNR1, SNR2, and SNR8. The spectrum of SNR2 yields a shock temperature of 10.8 keV with an ionization timescale of 1.6 x 10(10) s cm(-3), indicating a relatively young remnant in an early Sedov phase, which is not supported by our optical wavelength analysis. Given the high luminosity of 10(39) erg s(-1) and the characteristics of the X-ray spectrum, we favor an ultra luminous X-ray source interpretation for this source associated with an SNR. Most of the transient sources that are detected in the gamma-ray sky are produced by extragalactic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). However, it is known that there are some other astronomical objects that can produce high-energy bursts within the Milky Way. SWIFT J195509+261406, just one degree off the Galactic plane, is one of them. It was discovered on the 10th July 2007 by the Swift satellite and was since then observable for a period of a fortnight. During this time SWIFT J195509+261406 experimented dramatic flaring activity that could be observed in near infrared, optical and X-rays. We gathered multi-wavelength observations of SWIFT J195509+261406 including optical, near infrared, millimeter and radio observations. Our dataset covers the time from 1 min after the burst onset to more than 4 months later. Following the initial burst in the gamma-ray band, we recorded more than 40 flaring episodes in the optical bands (reaching up to I c ∼ 15) over a time span of 3 days, plus a faint infrared flare that was observed at late times. After this time, the source slowly faded away until it became undetectable. Using the observations compiled in this work we propose that this source is part of the magnetar family, linking soft gamma-ray repeaters and anomalous X-ray pulsars to dim isolated neutron stars.

We present the results of an optical search for supernova remnants (SNRs) in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 2903. Interference filter images and spectral data were taken in March 2005 with the f/7.7 1.5 m Russian Turkish Telescope (RTT150) at TUBITAK National Observatory (TUG). Spectral data were obtained with the 6 m BTA (Bolshoi Azimuthal Telescope, Russia). We used the SNR identification criterion that consists of constructing the continuum-subtracted H$\alpha$ and continuum-subtracted [SII]$\lambda$$\lambda$6716,6731 images and their ratios. Five SNR candidates were identified in NGC 2903 with [SII]/H$\alpha$ ratios ranging from 0.41 - 0.74 and H$\alpha$ intensities ranging from 9.4$\times10^{-15}$ to 1.7$\times10^{-14}$ ergs cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. This work represents the first identification of SNRs by an optical survey in NGC 2903. We present the spectrum of one of the bright candidates and derive an [SII]/H$\alpha$ emission line ratio of 0.42 for this source. In addition, the weak [OIII]$\lambda$5007/H$\beta$ emission line ratio in the spectrum of this SNR indicates an old oxygen-deficient remnant with a low propagation velocity., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted to be published in A&A as it stands

The SNR identification technique consisted of constructing continuum-subtracted H ? and [SII] ?? 6716,6731 images and then using [SII] / H? ratios obtained from the image. The SNR candidates are normally identified as nebulae that have [SII] / H? ratios >0.4 compared with HII regions

For a sample of Swift and Fermi GRBs, we show that the minimum variability timescale and the spectral lag of the prompt emission is related to the bulk Lorentz factor in a complex manner: For small $\Gamma$'s, the variability timescale exhibits a shallow (plateau) region. For large $\Gamma$'s, the variability timescale declines steeply as a function of $\Gamma$ ($\delta T\propto\Gamma^{-4.05\pm0.64}$). Evidence is also presented for an intriguing correlation between the peak times, t$_p$, of the afterglow emission and the prompt emission variability timescale., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We report optical photometric and SOAR spectroscopic observations of an X-ray source found within the localization error of the Fermi-LAT unidentified gamma-ray source J0523.5-2529. The optical data show periodic flux modulation and radial velocity variations indicative of a binary with a 16.5-hr period. The data suggest a massive non-degenerate secondary (~> 0.8 M_sun), and we argue the source is likely a pulsar binary. The radial velocities have good phase coverage and show evidence for a measurable eccentricity (e=0.04). There is no clear sign of irradiation of the secondary in either photometry or spectroscopy. The spatial location out of the Galactic plane and gamma-ray luminosity of the source are more consistent with classification as a recycled millisecond pulsar than as a young pulsar. Future radio timing observations can confirm the identity of the primary and further characterize this interesting system., ApJ Letters in press (v2: very small changes to match published version)

Context. Earlier work suggests that slowly rotating asteroids should have higher thermal inertias than faster rotators because the heat wave penetrates deeper into the subsurface. However, thermal inertias have been determined mainly for fast rotators due to selection effects in the available photometry used to obtain shape models required for thermophysical modelling (TPM). Aims. Our aims are to mitigate these selection effects by producing shape models of slow rotators, to scale them and compute their thermal inertia with TPM, and to verify whether thermal inertia increases with the rotation period. Methods. To decrease the bias against slow rotators, we conducted a photometric observing campaign of main-belt asteroids with periods longer than 12 h, from multiple stations worldwide, adding in some cases data from WISE and Kepler space telescopes. For spin and shape reconstruction we used the lightcurve inversion method, and to derive thermal inertias we applied a thermophysical model to fit available infrared data from IRAS, AKARI, and WISE. Results. We present new models of 11 slow rotators that provide a good fit to the thermal data. In two cases, the TPM analysis showed a clear preference for one of the two possible mirror solutions. We derived the diameters and albedos of our targets in addition to their thermal inertias, which ranged between 3(-3)(+33) and 45(-30)(+60) Jm(-2) s(-1/2) K-1. Conclusions. Together with our previous work, we have analysed 16 slow rotators from our dense survey with sizes between 30 and 150 km.
