Postharvest and supply chain losses are the main global challenges. The security of future food demand requires certain availability of natural resources and useful application of limited means. This study is based on maximizing the productive use of baren fish farms to meet future food demand. In this work, the simulation optimisation model was used to determine the estimated findings. We developed the life cycle measurement technique to examine the percentage loss occurred during postharvest and supply chain process and the assessment of its economic, environmental and social influences. Results demonstrate the variate average change of postharvest loss and supply chain loss of a farmer, processors, trader, wholesalers and retailers are, respectively, 7.06%, 8.89%, 6.23%, 9.10% and 13.05% regarding sample fish-form as compared to same capacity healthy land fish-form with a productive supply chain operation. The total healthy mud of land and quality water consumed to produce this lost food accumulated 60 thousand hectares and 255 million cubic meters apart from other producing inputs. It is estimated cost $380 million annually 7.8 million tons of growth. The study reveals the significance of better prevention approaches of life cycle waste to reduce the environmental, economic and social impacts. Additionally, it helps to diminish the postharvest loss percentage to decrease the perishability of products throughout the supply chain of aquaculture field and the mechanisms that protect the products until these are sold out to consumers. In order to reduce postharvest losses, the study suggests that farmers be included as supplier actors and measured twice, first at the production stage and then at the supply chain stage. With the use of well-organized techniques, the farmer's education is a key component in reducing postharvest losses of perishable goods and boosting aquaculture sectors. Therefore, sustainable economic growth requires from farmers to supplier and productive coordination in reducing environmental impacts. Coccidiosis, caused by parasites of the genus Eimeria, is a significant economic burden to the poultry industry. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis to evaluate the financial losses associated with Eimeria infection in chickens in Algeria, relying on data provided by key stakeholders in the Algerian poultry industry to assess sub-clinical as well as clinical impact. We employed the updated 2020 version of a model established to estimate the cost of coccidiosis in chickens, taking into consideration specific cultural and technical aspects of poultry farming in Algeria. The findings predict economic losses due to coccidiosis in chickens of approximately £86.7 million in Algeria for the year 2022, representing £0.30 per chicken raised. The majority of the cost was attributed to morbidity (74.9%), emphasizing the substantial economic impact of reduced productivity including decreased bodyweight gain and increased feed conversion ratio. Costs associated with control measures made up 20.5% of the total calculated cost, with 4.6% of the cost related to mortality. These figures provide a clear indication of the scope and economic impact of Eimeria infection of chickens in Algeria, illustrating the impact of practices common across North Africa. They underscore the ongoing requirement for effective preventive and control measures to reduce these financial losses while improving productivity and welfare, ensuring the economic sustainability of the Algerian poultry industry. Due to COVID-19, Japan’s GDP decreased by 4.5% in 2020 from 0.7% in 2019. The economy increased by 1.7% in 2021, stagnated at 1.4% in 2022, and is expected to grow at 1.8% in 2023 and to slowdown to 0.9% in 2024, based on the January 2023 forecasts of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). IMF’s January 2023 report is based on inflation peaking with low growth due to rising interest rates. In January 2021, a year into the COVID-19 pandemic period, the IMF was hopeful, predicting a V-shaped growth pattern of 3.1% for 2021 and 2.4% for 2022 due to policy stimulus and the availability of vaccines. However, this did not materialize due to various geopolitical and economic shocks. The economic costs of the COVID-19 pandemic relative to its absence are estimated to be at least US$1.1 trillion (¥160 trillion) until 2030 under a continued low economic growth future path. Moreover, the estimated US$1.1 trillion economic loss is equivalent to the erasure of approximately 30% of GDP produced in 2019 during the Abenomics era. If in the absence of the pandemic, the economy was assumed to have a high growth, the losses would reach US$ 4.8 trillion (¥706 trillion) due to the lost opportunity of a high-growth counterfactual trajectory.

Abstract Climate change, caused by both natural and human activities, poses significant threats to global health, including rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and environmental disruptions. The One Health concept, emphasizing the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, is crucial in addressing these challenges. Climate change is linked to the emergence and resurgence of infectious diseases, resulting in substantial economic losses worldwide due to outbreaks, floods, and disrupted trade, among other factors. Therefore, it is crucial to adapt to this changing climate to safeguard One Health. By implementing a One Health approach, we can effectively address the consequences of climate change and make substantial contributions to health and food safety. This approach also holds the potential to mitigate economic losses, particularly in low and middle-income countries. Additionally, in the future, research interventions based on the One Health framework may offer sustainable solutions to combat climate change.

Pseudocercospora fruit and leaf spot (PFLS), also known as angular leaf spot of citrus, is a devastating fungal disease that poses a significant threat to citrus production, profitability and food security in sub‐Saharan Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. In the present review, we explore current knowledge regarding PFLS management initiatives, including cultural practices, chemical control strategies and biological interventions. Furthermore, this review highlights the challenges faced in controlling PFLS and emphasizes the urgent need for sustainable and cost‐effective solutions to combat the disease. We discuss recent advancements and emerging prospects in understanding PFLS, including novel approaches for disease management and the potential for developing resistant citrus cultivars through breeding programmes or genetic modification. By synthesizing existing research findings and identifying gaps in knowledge, this review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of PFLS and its impact on food security. We emphasize the importance of collaborative efforts, knowledge exchange and developing integrated disease management strategies to control PFLS and mitigate its detrimental effects on citrus production and farmers' livelihoods in affected regions. Money laundering in Latvian law is considered a criminal offence against the interests of the financial system and the administration of justice. However, money laundering may also affect the property interests of the victim of a predicate offence whose assets due to money laundering have become unrecoverable. The study examines whether the victim can claim compensation from the launderer under Latvian law compared to Swiss and German laws. The results show that Latvian courts do not consider money laundering activities to cause economic losses to the victim, thus excluding compensation. However, payment of the value of the laundered assets may be ordered for the benefit of the victim. In contrast, Swiss and German courts acknowledge economic losses stemming from the money laundering itself, which provides a basis for compensation. PM2.5 is the main air pollutant in China, the future health burden and economic impact it poses in China has not been fully studied. In this study, a mathematical model of PM2.5 emissions and concentrations was constructed using a fitting method, and the changes of PM2.5 concentrations from 2035 to 2060 were predicted including Ambitious-pollution-1.5°C-goals, Ambitious-pollution-2°C-goals, Current-goals and Baseline scenarios, the health impacts of PM2.5 mortality were predicted in this period. The resulting economic losses including value of statistical life(VSL) attributed to the burdens of disease were predicted. The results show that: (1) Compared with 2035, the change range of PM2.5 concentration in 2060 is -83.37 ~ 21.33μg.m−3 under different carbon neutrality scenarios, and the pollution reduction degree of Ambitious-pollution -1.5°C-goals and Ambitious-pollution-2°C-goals is usually higher than that of Current-goals and Baseline scenarios; (2) Overall health impacts increased by Ambitious-pollution-1.5°C-goals, Ambitious-pollution-2°C-goals, Current-goals, and Baseline. In 2060, compared with the 1.5°C scenario, the changes in health impacts in each province under the 2°C and Current scenarios were 15.88%-21.50% and 17.29%-97.55%, respectively. (3) In 2060, the economic loss of each province in the Ambitious-pollution-1.5 °C-goals will account for 0.02% ~ 0.05% of the total national GDP, and the proportion under the baseline scenario will be 0.21% ~ 57.89%. The study shows that significant health and economic benefits can be achieved under the 1.5 °C scenario in the future, however, given future population and GDP changes, China needs to take more aggressive air pollution mitigation measures. This scientometric analysis significantly advances the understanding of landslide risk assessment and economic losses, focusing on scientometric insights. This study aims at analyzing the global trends and structures of landslide risk and economic loss research from 2002 to 2023 using scientometric techniques such as co-authorship, co-word, co-citation, cluster analysis, and trend topics, among others. Thus, analysis of 92 studies gathered from Scopus and Web of Science databases reveals a continuous growth in environmental, social, and quantitative research topics. Predominant contributions hail mainly from China and Italy. The research identifies critical themes, including risk analysis, vulnerability, fragility, and economic losses. The current identified research combines advanced statistical methods, including logistic regression, with climate change scenarios and susceptibility assessments to reveal intricate connections between climatic shifts, hydrogeological hazards, and their economic and environmental impacts. This study provides researchers and practitioners with a comprehensive understanding of the status quo and research trends of ontology research landslide risk and its economic losses. In order to understand the disaster-causing laws of earthquakes, formulae the disaster prevention and mitigation planning effectively, and mitigate earthquake disaster losses, earthquakes data with the magnitude not less than 5.0 and their losses in China and surrounding areas were sorted out from 1949 to 2021. Their distribution characteristics in terms of time and space were studied in detail, and the following conclusions were obtained, 453 disaster earthquakes caused about 350,000 deaths, 760,000 injuries, and 1124.9 billion RMB of direct economic losses (converted value), of which caused by major seismic hazards accounted for a huge proportion. From the time perspective, there are obvious earthquake-prone and less earthquake-prone years, and the number of catastrophic earthquakes has increased in chronological terms. The economic losses caused by earthquakes accelerated quickly, and the casualties decreased by varying degrees. Geographically, the frequency of earthquakes on the west side of the HU Huanyong Line was higher, but the average loss was lower. In the economic subregions, the western region had the highest frequency of earthquakes and the lowest average loss. The eastern region had the second highest frequency of earthquakes and the highest average loss. The central and northeastern regions had the lowest frequency of earthquakes and medium average losses. Yunnan and Sichuan provinces had the highest frequency of earthquakes and the most severe earthquake losses. For earthquakes with similar intensity in the same period, the casualties and economic losses were more serious in economically developed and densely populated areas. In the 21st century, the frequency of earthquakes with low magnitudes but large-scale disasters increased, and most of them occurred on the east side of the HU Huanyong Line and in the eastern and central parts in the economic subregion. This study presents a technology used for the prediction of economic losses to facilities in a given area during an earthquake, thereby enabling the efficient application of performance-based maintenance and seismic strengthening. We also propose an algorithm for the establishment of a reinforcement plan that minimizes earthquake-induced economic losses within a constrained budget. The algorithm incorporates fragility functions from prior research and utilizes an optimization technique for budget allocation, leveraging the target damage ratio concept and constrained optimization. Based on the fragility curve, the probability of occurrence for each damage state for a specific PGA value and the damage rate for each damage state are calculated. From these values, the expected damage ratio (EDR) is estimated. An optimization-based budget allocation algorithm is developed to find the elements that would result in the lowest damage rate for a limited cost. To validate the applicability of the model, we created a hypothetical city with a 30 km × 30 km area containing bridges, embankments, and buildings. The estimated pre- and post-reinforcement damage was assessed in two earthquake scenarios, allowing us to test the effectiveness of the optimization-based budget allocation model in reducing damage. This article reviews the essential role of mathematical models in understanding and combatting the pandemic of novel coronaviruses, in particular focusing the advance in the use of mathematical models in disease control in Japan. Highlighting the integral role of mathematical models in public health, the article introduces a model that factors in the heterogeneity of infectious contacts, concentrating on the effectiveness of testing and isolation, alongside a model that involves economic losses. The models exhibit how, given such heterogeneity, milder behavioral restrictions can still achieve suppression, rigorous testing and isolation can effectively curb the spread, and containment measures can mitigate economic losses. These models aid in grasping the complicated dynamics of disease transmission and optimizing interventions. The knowledge of population ecology is also considered effective for public health in statistical analysis, organizing concepts using dynamic mathematical models, which lead to policy proposals and deepen understanding. Evolution theory may help the understanding of virulence subject to change. However, effective prevention necessitates not only models but also the practical implementation of efficacious measures. The cooperation of various disciplines is particularly crucial in achieving a balance between health measures, economic interests, and human rights. Moreover, the article acknowledges the limitations of models and underscores the significance of real‐world execution. Abstract This study investigated the prevalence of gastrointestinal (GI) parasites in ruminants slaughtered at the abattoir in district Narowal, Punjab, Pakistan. The overall prevalence of parasitic infection was determined to be 72.92% based on faecal examination. This research is relevant since it is important to assess performance and effectiveness of activities performed by Rospotrebnadzor bodies and organizations in RF regions. The aim of this study was to assess performance and effectiveness of control and surveillance activities performed by a territorial office of Rospotrebnadzor given the current reduction in scheduled inspections. Control and surveillance activities performed by the Rospotrebnadzor Rostov Regional Office in 2023 were selected as the research object. They were aimed at improving the quality of the environment for the region population and indirectly at reducing population incidence and mortality associated with exposures to harmful risk factors represented by ambient air, water, and soil pollution etc. The study was accomplished relying on methodical instruments developed by the Federal Scientific Center for Medical and Preventive Health Risk Management Technologies and approved by the RF Chief Sanitary Inspector. The basic methodology establishes rules for calculating economic losses associated with population mortality and incidence (children, working age population and population older than working age) caused by environmental exposures. Calculations were based on the results of instrumental measurements of the environment quality in cities in the Rostov region and the results of scheduled and off-schedule control activities performed by the Rospotrebnadzor Rostov Regional Office in 2023. It was established that control and surveillance activities performed by the Service managed to prevent approximately 1760 deaths and more than 152.4 thousand diseases, which could actually occur should the Service fail to perform its regulatory actions. The total prevented economic losses equaled approximately 2.1 billion rubles in 2023. Economic effectiveness was established relying on prevented losses of the gross regional product and equaled 7.25 rubles per 1 spent ruble in 2023 prices. There are several promising trends in the scientific and methodical support provided by practical activities performed by Rospotrebnadzor. They include development and implementation of methodical approaches to assessing effectiveness of prevention activities; searching for new approaches to assessing performance and effectiveness of other activities accomplished by the Service (licensing, registration of new and hazardous chemicals and products, etc.).

Pollution of the atmosphere, soil, and water resources in Ukraine resulting from the Russian-Ukrainian war is a problem that requires immediate resolution, as the ecocide’s consequences on the environment will be long-lasting and have a global impact. The aim of the study was to analyse the impact of active military actions on the atmospheric air, water resources of Kharkiv and Kharkiv Region, and the soils of the Ivory Coast of Sviatoslav National Nature Park in Mykolaiv Region by assessing their eco-geochemical state. The study of the impact of fires on the soil properties of the Ivory Coast of Sviatoslav National Nature Park using potentiometric, luminescence-bituminological, and spectrofluorometric methods revealed that the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is the highest in pyrogenic areas, where low molecular weight PAHs are predominant; high molecular weight PAHs are also present, indicating recent burning of the territory. It was found that the PAH content is lower at microelevations. The aspiration method was used to investigate the atmosphere. It was shown that the level of air pollution in Kharkiv is low at all observation points, with a level of less than 5 on the scale of the air pollution index. It was found that the largest number of exceedances in the water bodies of the Kharkiv Region was recorded for such pollutants as sulphates (recorded at 17 points), ammonium nitrogen (at 16 points), biochemical oxygen demand (at 14 points), and dissolved oxygen (at 11 points). In all the most polluted water bodies, the maximum permissible concentration exceedances were recorded for 4, 3, and 2 hydrochemical indicators. The study results can be used in practice by ecologists to develop and implement measures to improve the ecological condition of the eastern and southern regions of Ukraine

The Field Crop Disease and Invertebrate Loss Calculator Web Tool is an interactive online resource showcasing estimates of the yield reduction and economic impact of plant diseases and invertebrate pests over time and location. Accessible through the Crop Protection Network website (https://www.cropprotectionnetwork.org), this free online research tool was developed to inform agronomists and researchers across industry and academia, extension workers, commodity groups, and funding agencies about the impact of crop disease and invertebrate pests. The tool enables widespread user access through commonly used web browsers on computers, tablets, and mobile devices. Yield loss estimates are generally obtained through annual surveys of university-affiliated specialists or others with experience in crop protection. Production data are primarily obtained from U.S. and Canadian government agencies. A detailed understanding of the economic impacts of plant disease and invertebrate pests provides valuable information that can inform the allocation of resources to reduce losses in major field crops. The subject of the study is the conceptual, legislative and theoretical provisions in the field of legal regulation of contractual relations in the implementation of joint activities in Ukraine and some European countries, as well as in the field of using the structure of joint activities as a special type of economic relations in the conduct of business. Methodology. General scientific methods were used in the research process. The comparative method was used to compare the legislative approaches to the legal regulation of contractual relations in the joint activities of Germany, France, Poland, Moldova and Ukraine. The analysis was used to determine the specifics of legislative approaches to the legal regulation of contractual relations for the implementation of joint activities in these countries, to identify their advantages and disadvantages. Synthesis was used to determine the methodological principles of legal regulation of joint activities. Induction and deduction were used to determine the basic principles of the functioning of civil legal partnerships with the aim of carrying out joint activities by their participants. The aim of the article is to propose concrete ways of improving the Ukrainian legal mechanism of contractual regulation of joint activity relations in order to ensure prompt and efficient post-war reconstruction of destroyed infrastructure facilities, the success of the process of recodification of the civil legislation of Ukraine and its harmonisation with the legislation of the EU countries. The results of the study have shown that, in general, the Ukrainian legislative approach to the legal regulation of relations on the implementation of joint activities is the most liberal and dispositive in comparison with the corresponding approaches of the European countries, which confirms the opinion that it is necessary to understand the agreement on joint activities as an effective legal and economic instrument for the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine, based on the consolidation of human efforts and resources (capital) for the achievement of a common goal. Conclusion. In order to improve the national legislative approach to the legal regulation of relations on joint activities on a contractual basis and to harmonise it with the provisions of European legislation, it is advisable to enshrine the following provisions by way of borrowing: 1) the prohibition of participants to engage in any activity that may be detrimental to the company, including the prohibition of competition; 2) the possibility of depriving a participant of the right to manage the company by a court decision if there is a valid reason, in particular as a result of a gross breach of duty; 3) the right of a participant to withdraw from a limited partnership if there are valid reasons and the invalidity of the objection to this effect; 4) the establishment of a basic list of the essential terms of a simple partnership agreement. This will undoubtedly have a direct impact on improving the institution of joint ventures as an important tool for the development of Ukraine's economic system in the post-war environment, especially in the context of investing in Ukrainian business and rebuilding the destroyed infrastructure.

Begomoviruses have emerged as destructive pathogens of crops, particularly in the tropics and subtropics, causing enormous economic losses and threatening food security. Epidemics caused by begomoviruses have even spread in regions and crops that were previously free from these viruses. The most seriously affected crops include cassava; cotton; grain legumes; and cucurbitaceous, malvaceous, and solanaceous vegetables. Alphasatellites, betasatellites, and deltasatellites are associated with the diseases caused by begomoviruses, but begomovirus–betasatellite complexes have played significant roles in the evolution of begomoviruses, causing widespread epidemics in many economically important crops throughout the world. This article provides an overview of the evolution, distribution, and approaches used by betasatellites in the suppression of host plant defense responses and increasing disease severity. Natural catastrophes have a tremendous influence on the environment and our economy, which has raised significant concerns and spurred scientific research. Several studies have been done to model the economic losses brought on by natural disasters. In this article, we primarily concentrate on examining the distributions of economic losses resulting from big catastrophes including wildfires, earthquakes, droughts, volcanic eruptions, and harsh weather. We recommend utilizing five well-known statistical distributions, including the Weibull, Log-logistics, Gamma, Generalized Pareto, and Lognormal distributions since we observe the skewed forms of the empirical distributions. We employ the maximum likelihood technique for each distribution for the available data sets in order to estimate the distributions. The parameter estimations are numerically computed using the PSO method. We select the distribution that best fits the economic losses using the Akaike Information Criterion and Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistics. Floods are one of the disasters that cause the greatest damage to social life, living health, economy and environment. This paper reveals the calculation of the economic damage of the commercial areas located near the creek due to floods in Sakarya, Dinsiz Stream. In this study, first, flood propagation maps were produced according to 50, 100, 200 and 500 years of flood flow periods that may occur in the study area. The HECRAS program was used to produce the flood maps and a 2D model was created from these maps, water level maps were obtained and then depth damage curves were used to figure out the economic losses leading to flood. In addition to the Huizinga, van Eck and Kok, ICBR, Pistrika and Jonkman flood damage assessment methods, which are frequently used in the literature, the HAZUS-MH method was used to calculate the economic losses that may occur in commercial areas. While HAZUS has functions that make separate calculations for each commercial sector, in other methods, calculations are made over the total area without sector discrimination. In addition, HAZUS has more detailed ranges of flooding water depths and therefore the calculation of damage rates corresponding to water depths can be done with higher precision than other methods. This paper looks at the current state of the railways in Slovakia and the economic losses which result from trains passing through locations with an increased incidence of sections of line with slow orders imposed. A calculation of time and financial losses due to a high number of slow order sections will be performed. We shall also focus in more detail on the development and related financing of Railways of the Slovak Republic (ŽSR) and make a number of comparisons with some neighbouring countries. Attention will also be paid to the actual status of completed and unrealised projects in the most recent period, exploring the reasons behind project delays and cancellations. The paper will also calculate how individual train journeys along slow order sections translate into actual operation. The actual impacts on railway operators will also be examined in terms of economics, time, and energy, with an emphasis on the sustainability of current practices and potential areas for improvement. Past major earthquakes have demonstrated that a significant proportion of existing residential buildings are vulnerable to seismic hazards, resulting in economic and social losses. The assessment of earthquake‐induced losses is crucial for devising strategies aimed at enhancing seismic resilience through mitigation plans and emergency response measures. This study intends to provide an analytical methodology for evaluating economic losses for existing residential concrete shear wall buildings in Eastern Canada seismic zones based on Canadian‐compatible seismic capacity parameters. A sampled data set related to residential buildings in Montreal was analyzed and statistical distributions were developed that represent the proportion of buildings in different seismic design code levels and number of stories. Vulnerability analyses were performed, which involved estimating buildings' response under seismic hazard inputs according to the 2020 National Building Code of Canada and conducting loss assessment for structural components, nonstructural displacement‐sensitive components, nonstructural acceleration‐sensitive components, and contents. The results of vulnerability analyses in terms of loss ratio curves showed that the seismic performance varies between mid‐rise and high‐rise concrete shear wall buildings with different seismic design code levels, and nonstructural displacement‐sensitive components exerted the most significant influence on overall economic losses among building components. In addition, a comparison was conducted between Canadian‐compatible economic loss ratio curves and those developed based on the standard seismic capacity parameters in the Hazus technical manual and differences in predicted loss ratios were discussed. The developed loss ratio curves can be integrated into regional scale loss assessment tools for rapid estimation of earthquake‐induced economic losses for concrete shear wall buildings as a function of seismic intensity. Purpose. Based on the author’s materials, to carry out a preliminary assessment of ecological and economic losses caused to the fisheries complex of the Kharkiv region as a result of military actions. Methodology. Field studies on water bodies of the Kharkiv Region, which were affected by military actions, were conducted. Public data of the State Agency of Land Reclamation and Fisheries of Ukraine in the Kharkiv Region (2021–2023) were used. The following research methods were used during the assessment of the ecological consequences and economic losses caused to the aquatic biological resources of water bodies of the Kharkiv region: analytical – collection of information from official sources of enterprises and institutions carrying out economic activities, control and monitoring of water bodies; geoinformation – assessment of the actual hydrological regime of water bodies; identification of the spatial location, measurement of quantitative and qualitative characteristics of water areas formed after the reservoirs drying-up; hydrobiological – determination of fish species and other hydrobiont composition; statistical – for qualitative and quantitative assessment of commercial ichthyofauna and the economic damage inflicted to the fishery; forecast –assessment of the potential transformation of the species biodiversity of the ecosystem in time under different conditions of further development of the water sector of Ukraine. Findings. The impact of military actions on the conditions of existence of aquatic biological resources in the Oskil and Pechenegi reservoirs, on the functioning of special commercial fish farms, the production of aquaculture products, and the development of industrial and recreational fishing in the region has been preliminarily assessed. The calculation of economic losses for aquatic bioresources of water bodies of the Kharkiv region was carried out. Originality. For the first time, a preliminary assessment of losses for the fisheries industry (including commercial, recreational fishing, aquaculture) of the Kharkiv region due to military actions was carried out. Practical value. The obtained results have important and multifaceted practical value, in particular they can be used for: assessment of environmental damage caused to Ukraine as a result of military actions; rational management of water and fisheries management due to restoration of water ecosystems exposed to military impact; development of recommendations on restoration of ecosystem services; spread of social awareness about the post-war environmental challenges of the future; making decisions about investments in natural resources and the use of ecosystem services.

This contribution discusses the problem of Covid-19 demographic and economic losses in Moldova. Although the pandemic is now no longer in the headlines, it is essential to understand how severe it was in Southeastern Europe. To illustrate this, the present study uses the example of the Republic of Moldova as a country with relatively high excess mortality. The Covid-19 mortality pattern in Moldova appears typical for the Eastern European and post-Soviet countries, with a decline in life expectancy for 2020–2021 and a more substantial decline for women. One of the main explanations for this pattern is the failure of the vaccination campaign, partly due to the population’s lack of trust in the healthcare system. The National Transfer Accounts approach is suggested to estimate economic losses. As a reference country for comparing the pandemic losses in Moldova, the present study uses Serbia, which was also strongly affected by the pandemic.

Fish deformities are detrimental to aquaculture and conservation initiatives; it is also an ethical problem and causes substantial financial losses to the aquaculture industry. The exact mechanism of deformities is still a mystery. Several factors cause deformities in fish; it seems that the deformations are inevitable but can be minimised by adopting good aquaculture practices such as proper broodstock husbandry, standard breeding and larval rearing protocol, management of water quality parameters, and providing nutritionally balanced feed, especially to the broodstock and developing larvae. In addition, it can be minimised by early detection of deformities, especially at the embryonic and larval stages. Monitoring of stocking materials should be an essential part of responsible aquaculture and conservation programmes; stocking materials should be free from any types of deformities as it affects not only aquaculture production, profitability and success of conservation programmes but also the reoccurrence of deformities in nature. The mechanism behind deformities and the development of low‐cost, robust methods/tools for detecting deformities in fish remain a challenge. The article analyses the damage caused to the Ukrainian economy and Ukrainian business by the periodic blocking of road border crossing points by Polish carriers and farmers. Given the possible use of a single terminology in the legal field, the author examines the definitions of the terms «perishable product», «perishable goods», and «perishable cargo». The author theoretically substantiates the expediency of distinguishing between the relevant concepts in terms of their application in international litigation for compensation for economic losses caused by the blockade of automobile border crossing points to both the Ukrainian economy in general and Ukrainian enterprises in particular. Also, the clarity of terminology is important when receiving insurance payments. The author analyses the existing scientific approaches to the interpretation of the concept of «losses» in economic and legal terms. The author suggests that losses in road transportation of perishable products caused by strikers who blocked border checkpoints should be divided into real losses (physical damage to cargo, losses from forced truck downtime in queues, etc.) and losses as lost profits (unpaid taxes and customs duties, lost income, etc.). In addition, it is advisable to divide the parties that have suffered losses by economic entities, as they differ in both the amount of damage caused and the type of losses incurred. It is proposed to calculate the amount of losses in the form of lost profits by comparing financial revenues in the respective months during the blockade of the checkpoints and in their normal operation. It is recommended to calculate real losses as the cost of damaged cargo – compensation to the manufacturer, the difference between the income per voyage and the total costs associated with the forced downtime of trucks in queues – compensation to the carrier. The article provides recommendations to the participants in the process of production and transportation of perishable goods to minimize the risks associated with losses incurred as a result of strikers' blocking of road border crossing points. Industrial plants are complex structures, highly vulnerable with respect to seismic loading. Past seismic events have demonstrated the devastating impact and huge economic losses that an industrial plant can experience not only due to physical damage of equipment, but also due to interruption of the production processes. In order to quantify these economic losses, plant seismic resilience evaluation is required. The current paper presents a probabilistic process flow-based framework for assessment of industrial plant resilience and economic losses in case of seismic events. Uncertainties are considered in the ability of plant equipment to withstand the perturbation, and also in the recovery process including equipment recovery durations and recovery costs. Monte Carlo Simulation is used to account for the uncertainties of the model. A black carbon plant is used as a case study to show the applicability of the model. Results and capability of the proposed model shows that it can be a useful tool for decision makers, plant owners, insurance companies, emergency managers and plant designers in their decision making process. Parasitic dinoflagellates of the genus Hematodinium are known to infect various marine crustaceans worldwide, especially crabs and several species of shrimp and lobster. Some of these species are new host species and components of commercial fishery products. These parasitic species are predominantly found in the hemolymph of the host and cause pathological changes and functional damage to organs and tissues, leading to death. In recent years, these parasites have infected important commercially valuable species, particularly in European waters, US waters, Australian waters, and recently in Shandong Peninsula in China. These Hematodinium pathogens were also reported to affect wild shrimp in Chinese waters and in the English North Sea. These rapid spreads affect crustacean aquaculture industries, where they are indeed a significant threat to the sustainability of the aquaculture of important crustaceans. The fishery products industries are also under pressure from the invasion of this pathogen, as the crab meat produced has a bitter taste, which may reduce its marketability. In response to these threats, this review was aimed at providing a broader understanding of the development of parasite distribution and ecological aspects of Hematodinium. In addition, the interaction of these pathogens with their hosts, the environmental drivers of Hematodinium disease, and future research perspectives were discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pollution of the atmosphere, soil, and water resources in Ukraine resulting from the Russian-Ukrainian war is a problem that requires immediate resolution, as the ecocide's consequences on the environment will be long-lasting and have a global impact. The aim of the study was to analyse the impact of active military actions on the atmospheric air, water resources of Kharkiv and Kharkiv Region, and the soils of the Ivory Coast of Sviatoslav National Nature Park in Mykolaiv Region by assessing their eco-geochemical state. The study of the impact of fires on the soil properties of the Ivory Coast of Sviatoslav National Nature Park using potentiometric, luminescence-bituminological, and spectrofluorometric methods revealed that the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is the highest in pyrogenic areas, where low molecular weight PAHs are predominant; high molecular weight PAHs are also present, indicating recent burning of the territory. It was found that the PAH content is lower at microelevations. The aspiration method was used to investigate the atmosphere. It was shown that the level of air pollution in Kharkiv is low at all observation points, with a level of less than 5 on the scale of the air pollution index. It was found that the largest number of exceedances in the water bodies of the Kharkiv Region was recorded for such pollutants as sulphates (recorded at 17 points), ammonium nitrogen (at 16 points), biochemical oxygen demand (at 14 points), and dissolved oxygen (at 11 points). In all the most polluted water bodies, the maximum permissible concentration exceedances were recorded for 4, 3, and 2 hydrochemical indicators. Not only can theft of energy result in monetary losses, but it also results in expenses that are not technical for energy providers and even for the power infrastructure. Theft of energy has a detrimental effect on both the financial viability and the quality of the electricity. Through the integration of information and energy flows, smart grids have the potential to avoid power theft. The analysis of data from smart grids makes it easier to identify instances of power theft. In contrast, previous systems fared badly when it came to detecting instances of energy theft. To help and assess energy supply businesses in decreasing the barriers of low energy, unexpected power use, and poor power management, we presented in this study a method to detect electricity theft based on consumption data from smart meters. This was done in order to assist and evaluate energy supply businesses. More specifically, the Deep CNN model is able to successfully accomplish two tasks: it differentiates between periodic and non-periodic energy while maintaining the overall features of the power consumption dataset. When it comes to detecting instances of energy theft, the results of the tests indicate that the deep CNN model displays the highest level of accuracy and exceeds prior versions.

Purpose of the article. Russia's armed aggression against Ukraine has become a real challenge and threat to Ukrainian society in various aspects of life. The lack of financial resources due to the defensive nature of the economy caused by the war makes it difficult to ensure road safety in Ukraine and to prevent deaths and injuries on the roads. The topical issue of the state of road safety in Ukraine is also related to its European integration course, as road safety is a priority European policy task for EU member states. The aim of this article is to conduct a criminological analysis of the state of road safety in Ukraine during the war, and to determine the damage caused by road traffic injuries and fatalities to the Ukrainian economy and society as a whole, taking into account the war situation. Research conclusion. The assessment of the state of road safety in Ukraine is based on official statistical information from the General Prosecutor's Office and the Department of Patrol Police, and the theoretical conclusions are based on the results of an anonymous survey of Ukrainian drivers on their compliance with traffic rules. The study of the level of road traffic accidents with fatalities and injuries in Ukraine has shown that the state of road safety deteriorated during the war in comparison with the pre-war period. The impact of the war on this condition is diverse and depends on the dislocation of the region in Ukraine and the intensity of combat operations in a given area. It has been established that among the factors significantly influencing the quantitative and qualitative indicators of violations in the field of road safety during the war, the most significant are the destruction of objects of road and transport infrastructure, a decrease in the effectiveness of patrol police activities, the construction of road fortifications, etc. The article also reveals the characteristics of the road safety system in wartime, emphasising the inadmissibility of extrapolating the state of road safety from the pre-war period to wartime, including in the direction of preventing violations in this area.

Influenza B virus (IBV) significantly impacts the health and the economy of the global population. WHO global health estimates project 1 billion flu cases annually, with 3 to 5 million resulting in severe disease and 0.3 to 0.5 million influenza-related deaths worldwide. Influenza B virus epidemics result in significant economic losses due to healthcare expenses, reduced workforce productivity, and strain on healthcare systems. Influenza B virus epidemics, such as the 1987–1988 Yamagata lineage outbreak and the 2001–2002 Victoria lineage outbreak, had a significant global impact. IBV’s fast mutation and replication rates facilitate rapid adaptation to the environment, enabling the evasion of existing immunity and the development of resistance to virus-targeting treatments. This leads to annual outbreaks and necessitates the development of new vaccination formulations. This review aims to elucidate IBV’s evolutionary genomic organization and life cycle and provide an overview of anti-IBV drugs, resistance, treatment options, and prospects for IBV biology, emphasizing challenges in preventing and treating IBV infection.

Abstract Background As natural disasters increase in both frequency and magnitude because of climate change, assets, such as buildings and infrastructure, are exposed to physical climate risk. In addition, as our societies transition towards a greener economy, the transitional climate risk will manifest itself in different forms: reputational issues, market solutions that may drive out those that do not comply, technological disruptions and policy initiatives. How both risks, physical and transitional, impact the economic value of real estate assets is not well understood and will be investigated as the main scope of this systematic map. Method we use systematic mapping to collate and configure existing evidence on how climate risk has affected the economic value of real estate assets. After designing a search string, English language peer-reviewed publications will be retrieved from the two largest and most popular scientific research databases, as well as a database containing policy documents. This corpus will be tested for comprehensiveness using a benchmark of 50 highly relevant articles. Once the comprehensiveness test is passed, a consistency test will be carried out on the screening of a randomly selected list of 200 articles by three reviewers. If a kappa score of at least 0.6 is achieved, one of the reviewers will carry out the remainder of the screening, with another reviewer quality assuring 10% of the screening. The retained corpus will then be distributed over the three reviewers, who will carry out the extraction of metadata according to an agreed coding strategy. The final output of the coding will consist of a heat map, showcasing where substantial evidence is available, and research gaps, providing recommendations for further research. In addition, the results will provide insight into the methodology to quantify the impact of climate risk on real estate value. Figures and tables will be designed to make it easy to comprehend the results of the mapping.

This study presents a technology used for the prediction of economic losses to facilities in a given area during an earthquake, thereby enabling the efficient application of performance-based maintenance and seismic strengthening. We also propose an algorithm for the establishment of a reinforcement plan that minimizes earthquake-induced economic losses within a constrained budget. The algorithm incorporates fragility functions from prior research and utilizes an optimization technique for budget allocation, leveraging the target damage ratio concept and constrained optimization. Based on the fragility curve, the probability of occurrence for each damage state for a specific PGA value and the damage rate for each damage state are calculated. From these values, the expected damage ratio (EDR) is estimated. An optimization-based budget allocation algorithm is developed to find the elements that would result in the lowest damage rate for a limited cost. To validate the applicability of the model, we created a hypothetical city with a 30 km × 30 km area containing bridges, embankments, and buildings. The estimated pre- and post-reinforcement damage was assessed in two earthquake scenarios, allowing us to test the effectiveness of the optimization-based budget allocation model in reducing damage. These results suggest that the proposed model offers a viable strategy for efficient seismic strengthening within budgetary constraints.

The study presents a concise overview on the main effects on satellites due to space weather drivers compared to the well-known interplanetary, magnetospheric and ground-based consequences. The solar-activity-driven influences include specific physics-based effects on the spacecraft surface and on-board electronics due to electromagnetic emission and energetic particles as well as complex effects due to geomagnetic storms which may endanger the mission performance and spacecraft longevity. We select as test examples the Starlink satellites in the period 2019–2022 and present the temporal correspondence between their launches and the space weather phenomena. Based on comparative analysis, we discuss whether the occurrence vs. the intensity of solar and interplanetary drivers of space weather can be considered as a cause for orbital stability problems and satellite loss. The results suggest that a sequence of geomagnetic disturbances together with multiple weak space weather events could lead to severe levels of atmospheric drag ending in a service or satellite loss.

This paper presents a methodology to evaluate the direct and general equilibrium losses for a testbed community subjected to a megathrust earthquake and tsunami hazard originating in the Cascadia Subduction Zone. The testbed community studied consists of buildings for all residential and commercial sectors in the economy. A fragility analysis and functionality model are applied to estimate the direct damage and losses of these buildings at the parcel level. The process relies on Monte Carlo simulations (MCS) that propagate uncertainties from the hazards through to the damage and loss models. A computable general equilibrium (CGE) model is used to assess aggregated general equilibrium losses to the community. As an important mitigation strategy, seismic retrofit reduces the direct loss to building functionality and general equilibrium losses. Results show that the vulnerability of economic sectors depends on the hazard type, hazard intensity, economic zone, and building type, and the risks vary with the recurrence interval. The highest risks are associated with 500-year and 1,000-year mean recurrence intervals for joint seismic–tsunami hazards, respectively. Results from assessing different design alternatives show that whereas retrofitting all buildings to the highest code level considered results in the lowest losses, retrofitting only commercial buildings can be an efficient retrofit option for enhancing community resilience when controlling for costs. Last, a sensitivity analysis shows that losses and associated risks are sensitive to the definition of building functionality, which highlights the necessity for a common definition of building functionality when performing vulnerability analyses. Stunting, a chronic condition arising due to nutritional deficiencies during pre- and postpartum periods, is a significant public health issue in Indonesia, with a nationwide prevalence of 29.6% and approximately 22.6% in Ogan Komering Ilir Regency. This research aimed to identify the risk factors associated with stunting in toddlers aged 12-35 months and calculate the economic losses incurred by this condition. To achieve this, a cross-sectional design was employed. The population in this study were toddlers aged 12-35 months in Pedamaran sub-district, Ogan Komering Ilir Regency. A sample of 77 toddlers were selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires, and calculations based on the Konig 1995 and Horton 1999 formulas were used to analyze the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) per capita. The research found a stunting prevalence rate of 51.9% in toddlers. Additionally, dietary diversity emerged as a significant factor related to stunting (p-value of 0.0001) and was identified as the most dominant factor. In contrast, economic status, toddler participation, and history of infectious diseases were not significantly related to stunting (p-value > α). The estimated potential economic losses incurred by stunting amounted to IDR 170 billion and IDR 765 billion, respectively, or 0.67%-3.03% of OKI’s GRDP, resulting from a 2% and 9% decrease in productivity. Hence, this research suggests that food consumption diversity is the most dominant factor significantly related to stunting in toddlers in Ogan Komering Ilir Regency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We started a campaign in the heart of Faisalabad, Punjab, Pakistan, to expose the hidden threats of parasitic illnesses in ruminants and the severe financial consequences associated with them. Our in-depth investigations focused on the prevalence, impact, and astounding financial losses brought on by organ contamination in slaughtered animals. Of the 384 slaughtered ruminants examined for gastrointestinal parasites, a prevalence of 44.79% was recorded. It is interesting to note that we found no conclusive association between parasitic infection and the various ruminant species under study (p > 0.05). However, goats (52.0%) had the highest numerical prevalence of parasitic infection, followed by cattle (46.1%), buffalo (46.0%), and sheep (34.7%) in that order. A significant finding (p < 0.05) showed that the majority of animals had light parasitism (46.5%), as opposed to those with moderate (30.2%) or severe loads (23.2%). Our research revealed substantial (p < 0.05) relationships between ruminant age, sex, and parasitic infection prevalence. In comparison to females (56.4%) and adults (48.1%), males (36.1%) and young (36.9%) ruminants showed considerably decreased infection rates (p < 0.05). On the other hand, we discovered a non-significant (p > 0.05) association between the months and the prevalence of parasitic infection. As a result of the condemnation of contaminated organs such as the rumen, lungs, and liver, an estimated financial loss of PKR 133,731,400 (USD = 466,939.2) was incurred. The yearly economic losses caused by liver condemnation were much greater than those caused by rumen and lung condemnation (p < 0.05). Our research not only reported a significantly higher abundance but also economic threats of the parasitic diseases among the slaughtered animals in Faisalabad, Punjab, Pakistan. Our findings highlighted the critical need for preventive and therapeutic interventions for parasitic infections in animals, in order to mitigate the economic losses through strengthened animal health. This document discusses the issue of crop damage caused by wild animals in agricultural areas in Himachal Pradesh, India. The study found that about 30-40% of crops in the Una district are damaged by animals such as neelgai and stray cattle. Factors contributing to this issue include over-exploitation of forest resources and reduction in carnivore populations. Farmers have adopted various management strategies, including fencing, to mitigate the problem, but no single approach has completely eliminated it.
