- Abstract
The decarbonisation of heavy industry processes is challenging as continuous supply of large amounts of high-temperature heat is needed. When considering a switch to heat supply from renewables (solar and wind), their intermittency stands in conflict with the continuous heat demand. As a result, system designs for completely continuous heat supply each hour of the year are oversized in their renewables and in their storage capacities. Such an oversizing causes high levelized cost of product (LCOP) and therefore lack of cost-competitiveness. This work analyses and shows to which degree the heat supply can be allowed to vary; reducing the oversizing and increasing cost-competitiveness of the renewable system. As variations in the heat supply cause additional costs (costs of cycling), e.g. damage to equipment or lost production; these costs are categorized, quantified, and balanced with the cost reduction thanks to the reduced oversizing. Another research objective is to see how the planning of operation and maintenance can be adapted to the variability and availability of the renewables. The methodology is based on optimization in Pyomo using a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) approach. The methodology of modelling disjunct modes is applied and developed further, which allows to set constraints and model depending on the mode and to detect and limit transitions between modes. This methodology allows to constrain or allow different degrees of variability of the heat supply. Furthermore, this method allows to model the production process in its key parameters of energy consumption, production rate and costs for each timestep over a full year. The sizing and operational planning for a generic plant over a full year is optimised. In a sensitivity analysis, different variable heat load models are applied and the impact on costs, system sizing, design and operation are observed. In a case study with an industrial partner, energy, production and cycling costs during e, Outgoing

Corporate Social Responsibility, sustainability, ESG criteria, and SDGs, among others, are terms weincreasingly hear in our daily lives, both in the business and personal spheres, as all companiesandindividualswanttobepartofthesustainable, environmentallyandsociallyresponsible transformation we are immersed in. Theconceptofsustainabledevelopment, asweknowittoday, isencapsulatedintheBrundtland report as "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." This report is grounded in achieving economic growth based on sustainability policies and the conviction that it is possible to build a more prosperous, fair, and secure future for people and the planet. Eventhoughcompanieshavebeenprovidingdataonthesustainabilityoftheirbusinessessince the 1980s, this information as a whole still fails to produce results with the necessary economic, social, and environmental value to address the major global challenges that would solve society’s most basic problems. This is why regulators have increased their demands in this matter. In Europe, an unprecedented regulatory framework has been under development since 2019, aiming to align financial information with non-financial or sustainability information, and as of the writing of this project, it is still in progress. The starting point is the European Green Deal, which forms the growth strategy of the European Union to transform Europe into a modern, resource-efficient, and competitive economy with net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. To this end, the EU Sustainable Finance Action Plan was created, where one of its objectives is to promote long-term transparency in economic activities. In this context, the sustainability directive is framed by the obligation of double materiality, which is of great importance for the long-term performance of the company. Double materiality refers to two aspects. The first aspect is to assist companies in defining and improving strateg

- Abstract

- Abstract
Steel production is a very energy-and-emission-intensive process, and with its projected increase in the future, due to steel’s vitality in the operation, sustenance, and development of modern economies, there is a huge need for solutions, pathways, and methodologies to increase the sustainability of steel making processes across all production facets, to meet global energy and climate goals. Pebble bed heaters/ Thermal Energy Storage (TES) systems possess great potential to be used as regenerators to recover waste heat across all facets of steel plants. Thus, this thesis focuses on the development of a simulation tool for pebble heaters via numerical modelling of heat transfer and its paraphernalia within packed bed TES systems, as a preliminary instrument for testing use cases and optimizing design decisions for their incorporation in ArcelorMittal’s steel production processes, to ultimately enable energy savings and decarbonization. The project was carried out by executing a thorough literature review and survey on heat transfer modelling techniques of packed-bed heat storage devices used in heavy industries and afterwards, developing a more robust model as an improvement to the previously existing one in ArcelorMittal. The finally developed model was a 1D, twoequation model, numerically computed using the finite difference method with an implicit time integration scheme. The model was verified and also validated using experimental data reported from literature sources. A percentage wise sensitivity analysis executed using the model revealed the importance of optimising the specific heat capacity of the solid particles, the height of the pebble heater and the charging time, to maximize energy extraction from the waste heat source. The diameter of the solid particles was also shown to impact the effective thermal conductivity of the TES system (due to its direct proportionality to the radiative contribution of the thermal conductivity), while also influencing the, Outgoing

Industrial strategies based on industrial ecology and circular economy have populated the current industrial landscape. However, these approaches focusing on the creation of symbiotic relationship among industries have been relatively insufficiently researched. Although economically and environmentally beneficial, the process of their emergence and development remains unclear. This conceptual research advances the potential role of knowledge in the creation of symbiotic linkages through a qualitative theoretical literature research. The result is a conceptual framework combining different theoretical streams. I conclude that by using absorptive capacity constructs coupled with the principles of industrial ecosystem framed under social network analysis, the genesis of industrial ecosystem can be unearthed. - Abstract
The external resource dependency of urban areas results in the externalization of environmental and socioeconomic impacts. Implementing food, energy and water production systems on urban rooftops (roof mosaics) can potentially help cities become more self-sufficient but depends on the city’s urban morphology. We studied the supply potential and impacts of four roof mosaic scenarios for different urban forms in Cerdanyola, a 58 thousand-inhabitant town in the metropolitan area of Barcelona. We combined spatial analysis of potential rooftops, metabolism analysis, and social and environmental impacts. The municipality has an average rooftop/ household potential of 31 m2 on which to implement any of the mosaic scenarios, with the highest potential in the single-family housing typology. The highest level of vegetable self-sufficiency was found in housing estates (32%), and the lowest in originary fabrics (28%). Regarding electricity and water self-sufficiency, the highest self-sufficiency level was found in the single-family housing typology (51% and 14%, respectively) and the lowest in housing estates (26% and 8%, respectively). Regarding impacts, the implementation of the electricity and rainwater harvesting systems depicts the most positive indicators in single-family housing areas. However, for housing estates and originary fabrics typologies, the best performance is shown to be in the implementation of rooftop farming systems., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (published version)

- Abstract
In the face of population growth and rising food consumption, the negative environmental effects generated by food waste and residues are some of the problems that must intensify the valorization of waste and the practice of sustainable protection measures to achieve a balance between society and the natural environment. Beer, being the most consumed beverage in the world, uses large quantities of raw materials for its production, generating tons of waste that need to be managed in a timely and appropriate manner. The proper disposal of waste has posed challenges for breweries in the transition to circular production. Under this scenario, different alternatives arise to take advantage of waste by integrating the circular economy in the beer market. The aim of this paper is to present a proposal for closing the cycle of by-products of the brewing industry to contribute to the circular economy in Catalonia. It analyzes the process, the brewing flow and identifies the existing wastes and recoveries to finally propose new recoveries to enhance the current uses of brewery wastes. To achieve this objective, a literature review was carried out, followed by field visits to different breweries and companies that valorize brewery wastes, to obtain data for the preparation of diagrams of the flow of matter and existing synergies of each brewery with the purpose of proposing new alternatives for the utilization of brewery by-products, Ante el crecimiento de la población y el alza del consumo de alimentos, los efectos negativos al medio ambiente que generan los residuos y desperdicios alimentarios son algunos de los problemas que deben intensificar la valorización de los residuos y la práctica de medidas de protección sostenibles para obtener un equilibrio entre la sociedad y el medio natural.

ABSTRACT Cities with industrial clusters face several environmental and social problems related to industrial production, requiring solutions to reduce and prevent negative impacts from industrial activities. The objective of this work was to evaluate the possibility of applying the concept of industrial symbiosis, from the discipline of Industrial Ecology, in the municipality of Diadema, São Paulo State. The data related to the companies and their corresponding raw materials and wastes were collected from the municipality of Diadema website, in the “Register of Industries” section, and through internet searches. A total of 1,293 companies were identified in the municipality of Diadema and more than 2,100 potential interactions between companies, raw materials used and waste generated, both based on processes used in the current scenario, as well as on processes that may be adopted by companies that already exist in the municipality, in case they produce products from the same segment – 890 of the companies identified present at least one possibility of interaction. Furthermore, 32 different types of waste that can be reused have been accounted for, with emphasis on metals and plastics. Since the municipality of Diadema still does not have strategies aimed at the management of industrial wastes, this work can contribute to the elaboration of public policies aimed at industrial waste management in Diadema, and act as a starting point to help in the planning and environmental management by the municipal government. The information obtained in this study can also be useful to potential future development of industrial symbiosis strategies in other regions of Brazil.

This work emerges from a dual problem: i) the industrial ecosystems approach can be used to observe if an industrial complex promotes the development of a given region?; and ii) from the industrial ecology, the territorial approach and the sustaincentrism, how can the sugar and alcohol complex be evaluated with respect to its capacity to generate economic, social and environmental development?. The main objective of this work is to develop, from the literature, an model to analyze the Industrial Ecosystems that include the elements of Sustaincentrism, Industrial Ecology and Territorial Approach. From the analytical framework, the object (the sugar and alcohol complex inserted in Triângulo Mineiro, Minas Gerais, Brazil) is observed aiming to identify the features of an industrial arrangement that is socially inclusive, economically viable and, at the same time, don t cause constraints to the environment. This work is adopting a descriptive kind of research, which uses mostly qualitative methods. The primary data, obtained by the application of questionnaires to a substantial sample of the universe that composes the sugar and alcohol complex in Triângulo Mineiro, complements the secondary data (obtained from literature review). The results, in some way, corroborate the hypothesis adopted: i) the industrial ecosystems approach, alone, can t insert the social and cultural elements on the analysis, tending to put on evidence, technical and economic aspects so, in that way, is necessary to complement it with another approaches that can insert those social elements; and ii) the sugar and alcohol complex still needs to evolve into new ways of social integration with the local and regional environment where it belongs, despite the fact that there are some important environmental and social gains in response to institutional pressures on the last decade. - Abstract
Solar radiation transmissivity in greenhouses is a key property largely determined by covering materials. This study compared tomato crop yields and their environmental performance of a polycarbonate rooftop greenhouse with alternative covering materials displaying higher solar transmissivity and lifetime performance. An integrated approach using experimental data with structural, energy modeling was used to model average lifetime crop productivities. At building functional unit (per m2·year), impacts varied between -29.0% and +24.0% compared to the current polycarbonate. Lifetime transmissivities improved up to 20.5% (4 mm-antireflective glass), leading to +46.6% of tomato yields (19.9 ± 2.2 kg/m2), and up to -33.9% of environmental impacts. Ethylene tetrafluoroethylene 60 µm-film resulted in 19.2 ± 2.3 kg tomatoes/m2 but improved environmental performance up to 41.7%. These results demonstrate the importance of employing integrated and life-cycle approaches to combine multiple trade-offs and dynamics within environmental assessments of greenhouse crops. The results are intended to contribute to improving greenhouse cultivation and sustainability., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (published version)

- Abstract
Some academic research projects have been developed in Universidad de Guanajuato, in Guanajuato state (México) and in Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya, in Catalunya (Spain) related to circular economy applied to pigs, especially in the process developed in slaughterhouses. The project aims to create a proposal for a complete valuation of every waste and for the use of every part of the pig, so the cycle in the pig’s slaughterhouse is completely closed. In this way the projects contribute to the circular economy. To achieve it, two students in Mexico (Master in Water Science and Grade in Environmental Engineering) and three in Catalonia (Master I Environmental Engineering and Master in Sustainability) have completed their theses. They have also helped to initiate a biomass growing pilot plant to test some of the waste valuations. First, some visits to slaughterhouses and to waste valuation facilities in Mexico and Catalonia were held. Afterwards, a flow diagram of the pig’s slaughterhouses was drawn for each country. Then, the attention was paid into wastes and how they were reused, recycled or disposed. The present reuse or recycling of waste is considered an existing synergy. Finally, some proposals were considered in order to close the material cycle in the pig slaughterhouses, so some new synergies were suggested, and the proposed synergies diagram was drawn. Some of the waste valuation proposals were tested in a pilot plant. Although the whole project is still active, there are some preliminary results: 16 existing synergies have been figured out and 27 synergies have been suggested. Some of the proposed synergies are: protein and ferrous products extracted from blood, construction panels and compost made from pig hair, insulin extracted from the pancreas, among others. The waste valuation undertaken was the use of pig slaughterhouses wastewater to grow biomass. This biomass is used afterwards to produce pig food, so the closure for the pig cycle is achieved, Postprint (author's final draft)

In Brazil, this is one of the industries that most develop and employ professionals, denoting high economic interest. In addition to this economic and social importance, the textile industry is responsible for practices that configure negative impacts and environmental degradation, which is one of the most polluting activities on the planet. As an example of this, solid waste from the jeans processing laundries and the process of customizing the pieces stand out. In an attempt to mitigate and reduce the environmental impacts arising from the textile industry, there is the insertion of practices in the production process called industrial ecology, which considers the reuse, recycling, reduction, remanufacturing of inputs and the reduction of the use of raw materials. This dynamism is based on the concept of circular economy, which considers circular models and adopts these practices within the industrial routine. The Local Productive Arrangement (APL) of Agreste Pernambucano is one of the largest textile industrial centers in the country and provides economic and social development for the region in which it is inserted, highlighting the municipalities of Caruaru, Santa Cruz do Capibaribe and Toritama. The objective of this study is to propose innovation in the technological routes of solid textile waste from the processing of jeans from the practices of Industrial Ecology and Circular Economy in the APL of Agreste de Pernambuco, seeking the development of sustainability in the sector. The research is organized into four chapters in structures of scientific articles from the studies. We chose to apply a methodology divided into four phases, one for each specific objective to be achieved, namely: (i) the bibliographic, bibliometric, scientometric and infometric study; (ii) the study of documents and sectoral legislation; (iii) the survey of primary data from local technical visits, photographic survey, georeferencing of areas and knowledge of existing technological routes in the study region; (iv) the proposition and pricing of the most viable technological route/routes for the region and that meets the principles of industrial ecology and circular economy. Based on the results presented, it is expected that this research will contribute to the development of environmental sustainability in the textile sector of Agreste Pernambucano in the face of discussions about industrial solid waste in question.

The general objective of this thesis is to analyze the critical elements of Industrial Symbiosis (IS) towards a circular model of production. The thesis is composed by three interdependent studies, carried out sequentially, in the following order: (1) analysis of the IS implementation processes in the industrial parks of Kalundborg/Denmark, Ulsan/South Korea and Kwinana/Australia. From the data collected, a theoretical-analytical framework was proposed with basis on the convergences found in the three cases. The results show that decisions related to IS implementation were molded by a similar set of variables that include: the diversity of industries; the economic viability of the exchanges; critical environmental issues as motivators for more sustainable practices; bilateral agreements as precursors to IS; collective engagement through forums, clubs, councils, and associations; trust to establish cooperative relationships; communication and information sharing strategies; an aligned regulatory framework at the national, regional, and local levels; congruence between government and company actions to create a cooperative environment; and a governance structure that involves local government, companies, R&D institutions, and a coordinating entity. (2) In order to complement the data from the first study, empirical evidence on IS in Brazil was raised from the analysis of the behavior of organizations in the IS implementation process in the CE Pilot Project of the Sete Lagoas industrial district. The contribution of study 2 to the general research objective is in pointing out the critical elements of the IS process from the Brazilian reality since the IS theoretical body is basically sustained from IS implementation cases in developed countries. (3) The empirical data from studies 1 and 2 showed that the understanding about the change in behavior of organizations in the transition to the circular model is not restricted only to the technical and economic dimensions, which exposed the theoretical weaknesses of the field when it comes to the social, cultural, institutional and organizational dimensions. In this sense, the study three integrated the theoretical approaches of Neoinstitutionalism and Interorganizational Relations to the IS theoretical body in order to contribute to the construction of a broader understanding.

Given the current environmental problems such as climate change, it is urgent to move towards a new technological and production pattern that allow economic growth and care for the environment to be compatible with each other. Different economic growth models have addressed the relationship between this and technical change, however, they have given little importance to the environment. For this reason, the objective of the current paper is to perform an exploratory and descriptive analysis of the role of technological change as a determinant of economic growth from the Solow (1957) and Kaldor & Mirrlees (1962) models, as well as to raise the need to move towards more sustainable growth models based on a new technological pattern and more efficient forms of production that guarantees a green economy, some principles of Industrial Ecology and the intensive use of renewable energy, sustainability. This paper focuses on the drivers of green technology adoption. We distinguish between end-of-pipe and cleaner production technologies aimed at either pollution mitigation or energy efficiency, respectively. We provide empirical evidence of the relations between existing policy instruments, organizational capabilities of firms and the adoption of different types of green technologies. We use a unique firm level panel dataset of 2562 Spanish manufacturing firms from 2008 to 2014 to carry out the empirical analysis. Our results show, first, that policy instruments drive adoption of green innovation more than organizational capabilities. Second, environmental taxation seems to be ineffective at stimulating the adoption of eco-innovation. Third, both investment subsidies and tax credits do imply higher levels of investments in green technologies. Tax incentives seem to mostly foster cleaner production technologies, while subsidies are used to finance all types of eco-innovations. Fourth, human resources as green employees are positively related with environmental investments. Finally, dynamic capabilities as the introduction of environmental management systems are correlated particularly with cleaner production investments oriented to reduce energy consumption.

The objective of this study is to create a system of indicators that allows measuring the level of circularity in pork production in slaughterhouses in Catalonia, in order to serve as a support for slaughterhouses, allowing the company's activity to be compared with years later, and thus visualize its transition from linear to circular. To achieve the objectives of this study, data was collected through different sources of information on waste in Spain, specific interviews were carried out with those in charge of the waste department and visits were made to different pig slaughterhouses and companies that value pig by-products. . A total of 43 circular economy indicators were developed for the pig sector, of which 24 correspond to the environmental aspect, 11 to the economic aspect and 8 to the social aspect. In addition, an index was developed, which allows us to observe in a general way how the pig sector is heading towards the closed cycle or the closing of the material cycle. A circular economy index was developed for the pig sector, called the “Circular Economy Index for the Pig Sector (ECP)”, which is built from four main elements, which are: the mass of residues from the pig slaughter destined for recovery per year, the mass of plastic, paper / cardboard and wood destined for recycling per year and the mass of plastic, paper / cardboard and wood reused per year, and the mass of product produced. This work makes an innovative and necessary contribution to the pig sector since previously there was no system of indices and indicators that would allow directing said sector to tend towards the closed cycle within the framework of the circular economy.

- Abstract
The article addresses the issue of automotive plastic waste —because they are very often deposited in landfills, increasing soil contamination— and proposes its use as aggregates for sustainable concretes and mortars. An overview of land and maritime pollution by plastic waste is presented, and some data on contamination by automotive plastics are included. The article is based on two contemporary concepts: i) urban metabolism; and ii) industrial ecology. From them is carried a systematic search of researches out that, at global level, explore the feasibility of using plastic waste —of diverse origins—, as inputs for the construction industry.

- Abstract
In this research, insects are studied, the group of animals with the greatest ecological representation and that far outnumber the rest of the species that interact with man (Mora et al., 2011). Is there a global decrease in insects? Given the availability of a historical database, which covers the period 2009 - 2019, and which contains abundance data for nine orders of insects (taxa) on Barro Colorado Island, in the middle of the Panama Canal, the motivation for conduct this research. For this, the following analyzes will be used: (i) SARIMA models (Box-Jenkins methodology) will be estimated to capture seasonal effects and (ii) thanks to the availability of climate data, GLM models will be estimated to verify the influence of certain climatological variables on the abundance of insects. The ultimate goal of this research then is to establish whether insect populations in tropical forests are declining. The results of this study are expected to show that the abundance of insects has not changed over time, in addition, being thermophilic, the abundance of insects should rise given the increase in temperature on Barro Colorado Island., En esta investigación se estudia a los insectos, el grupo de animales de mayor representatividad ecológica y que supera ampliamente en número al resto de especies que interactúan con el hombre (Mora et al., 2011).

- Abstract
This research covers the topic of the harmonious relationship between industrial architecture and rural landscape, the problem that was detected was the fragmentation of habitat and rural landscape, since this type of architectural objects are purely urban, therefore, it aims to insert and link industrial architecture in the rural environment from mimesis and the implementation of strategies, that allow a pertinent articulation. This will be worked on by the hand of authors such as Alfred Bötticher, and Peter Behrens, who bring out the importance of form in this type of architectural objects, architects such as José Luis Lalana Soto and Luis Santo where they expose the importance of linking these structures not only with the environment, but also with the user, the history and culture of the territory, and finally, mimesis was studied as the main strategy for the insertion of industrial architectures in natural environments, according to the architect Antonio Grillo. The aforementioned led us to consider that industrial architecture and rural landscape can be merged through concepts and characteristics that this architecture must meet in o| to be located in the territory.

Instituto Presbiteriano Mackenzie Although the studies that correlate the economy with environmental impacts began in the second half of the twentieth century, it was only in the 2000s that the subject left the field of literature and became part of the discussions that pointed to an awareness of the relevant action of the means of production and their consumption practices as harmful to nature. This trend also came into effect with regard to society, giving rise to a vision that would corroborate the union of economic, social, and environmental dimensions in the productive context. Assessing and considering the impacts that industries cause has become a relevant factor in decision making, causing an evolutionary process in the scope of Corporate Governance, sustainable actions, and innovation processes, positively influencing market practices. This new way of thinking and relating to the environment and society has moved not only the business sectors, but also the organs and institutions that guide them. The theme sustainability has become widely used in global debates, uniting the organizational universe with entities that aim at environmental preservation, in the search for strategies and production conducts that seek the preservation of natural resources and with fairness of values among the interested parties. Corporate Social Responsibility integrates theories and trends such as those seen in the creation of value, stakeholders, ethics, and the need to apply sustainable business development and growth, thus encompassing the Triple Bottom Line. It is clearly visible that some production processes have reached their natural resource use limit and need to be replaced by a path of Innovation. The establishment of the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which include the human, environmental, and corporate dimensions, is one of the main drivers of sustainable practices adopted by industries. Among the SDGs, the number 9 stands out for this study, which orders on the need to build resilient infrastructures, rehabilitating industries with increased efficiency in the use of renewable resources and use of clean industrial technologies and processes, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization, in addition to fostering innovation, strengthening scientific research, and improving technological capabilities, especially in developing countries. Since 2006, the B3 ISE portfolio has made an annual selection of the companies that present the best sustainable practices. Thus, the following research questions were defined: What is the evolution of governance models for corporate sustainability of industries present on the ISE? How governance for sustainability of industries on the ISE B3 relate to the perspective of industrial ecology? The methodological perspective was adopted to conduct the study with the research question for the description of observed phenomena and discussions about. Three complementary research strategies were adopted for conducting the data collection and analysis work, wich are frequency analysis, coding and categorization. The discussions arising from the data analysis assessments related to word frequency and categorical analysis.

This paper aims at comparatively analyzing the IS process in three remarkable empirical cases. Ostrom’s Institutional Analysis and Development framework and its categories for analysis are used to understand each process. A theoretical and analytical framework is proposed based on a survey of contextual elements that shaped the behavior of organizations towards Industrial Symbiosis practices. The results show that although there was no clear, linear order in which the actors developed symbiotic relationships, the decisions related to Industrial Symbiosis are shaped by a similar set of variables. These variables range from technical and economic aspects, such as the diversity of industries and the viability of exchanges, to social and institutional aspects, encompassing critical environmental issues; bilateral agreements; collective engagement; trust to build cooperative relationships; communication and information sharing strategies; integrated regulatory framework at three levels; congruence between government and company actions to create a cooperative environment; and governance structures involving local government, companies, research and development institutions, and a coordinating entity or the champion. This framework may serve as a reference for diagnostic analyses assessing aspects that can be improved wherein Industrial Symbiosis is already underway. It may also be useful in prescriptive analyses assessing the potential for implementing IS.

This research analyses the application of the guidelines of industrial ecology and architecture of industrial buildings through its environmental certification. The theoretical-conceptual review focuses on the evolution of this architecture over the industrial revolutions, especially with regard to the design process, to building technologies and the relationship of the building with its surroundings. It also exposes the concept of industrial ecology, its principles, guidelines and application in urban areas, culminating in the performance indicators of buildings present in the process of environmental certification of industrial buildings - Environmental Building Establishment (BREEAM). On the assumption that industrial ecology is a broader concept of sustainability, the method of analysis is based on preparing correlation table between their guidelines, the architectural guidelines and the BREEAM certification. The main objective of this research is to establish guidelines that add the most ecology to industrial building's architecture, contributing to increase sustainability Mestrado Arquitetura e Construção Mestre em Engenharia Civil

Design and ecology are critical issues in the industrial sector. Products are subject to constant review and optimization for survival in the market, and limited by their impact on the planet. Decisions about a new product affect its life cycle, consumers, and especially the environment. In order to achieve quality solutions, eco-effectiveness must be considered, therefore, in the design of a process, its product development and associated system. An orderly methodology is essential to help towards creating products that meet both user needs and current environmental requirements, under paradigms that create environmental value. To date, the industry has developed techniques in an attempt to address these expectations under Cradle-to-Cradle (C2C), which is loosely structured around the conceptual frameworks and design techniques. The present work describes a new framework that encompasses all stages of design, and enables interaction under a set of principles developed for C2C. Under this innovative new paradigm emerges the Genomic Model of Eco-innovation and Eco-design, proposed as a methodology for designing products that meet individual and collective needs, and which enables the design of eco-friendly products, by integrating them into the framework of the ISO standards of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), eco-design, eco-labeling, and C2C certification. - Abstract
[EN] The expected increase of the world¿s population is an important challenge for the upcoming years. The need to feed the population in a sustainable way makes it necessary to find alternative sources of nutrients that generate a lower environmental impact and, at the same time, are technically and economically profitable. The aim of this study is to evaluate the environmental impact of the Lemna (or duckweed) as a high performance and low impact protein source by means of life cycle assessment. The study considers from cultivation to harvesting and subsequent product transformation. To address the study, two cultivation scenarios are simulated, either in open or closed method, which allows increasing the yield and extending the productive period throughout the year. The methodology used is the one detailed in ISO 14040: 2006 for Life Cycle Assessment. The results are based on two functional units: 1 kg of dry matter and 1 kg of lemna protein. The production of the infrastructure, fertilizers manufacturing, the replacement of the water lost by evapotranspiration, as well as the energy necessary for agitation, harvesting and subsequent drying of the lemna have been considered. The results evaluated are compared with those of LCA from other protein sources of plant origin through a literature review of scientific publications. The results show that the impacts of producing in open and closed pond are very similar, due to the long life of the roof infrastructure. In addition, fertilizers manufacturing, necessary for cultivation, is the stage contributing the most to all the impact categories. Despite this, lemna, in comparison with the other vegetable sources, is positioned as an effective and sustainable alternative for protein production given its high yield and low environmental impact., [CA] L’esperat augment de la població a nivell mundial suposa un important repte per als anys vinents.

- Abstract
Industrial strategies based on industrial ecology and circular economy have populated the current industrial landscape. However, these approaches focusing on the creation of symbiotic relationship among industries have been relatively insufficiently researched. Although economically and environmentally beneficial, the process of their emergence and development remains unclear. This conceptual research advances the potential role of knowledge in the creation of symbiotic linkages through a qualitative theoretical literature research. The result is a conceptual framework combining different theoretical streams. I conclude that by using absorptive capacity constructs coupled with the principles of industrial ecosystem framed under social network analysis, the genesis of industrial ecosystem can be unearthed., Estratégias industriais baseadas na ecologia industrial e na economia circular povoaram o cenário industrial atual.

- Abstract
Al comprender el metabolismo urbano, es posible identificar causas y efectos y, posteriormente, potenciales sinergias industriales que promueven la economía circular y contribuyen a la mejora de la calidad ambiental., Litoral of Besòs in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona is one of the greatest receptors of environmental loads due to the mouth of the Besós river to the sea, which is under the influence of agricultural and livestock activities upstream, as well as the location of the industrial sector, urban dynamics and infrastructures of great importance for water, waste and energy management. These environmental loads can be recognized through the analysis of urban flows, water, energy and waste. By understanding urban metabolism, it is possible to identify causes and effects and subsequently potential industrial synergies that promote the circular economy and contribute to the improvement of environmental quality.

- Abstract

50. The emergence of the imaginary: contributions to thinking about the future of design

- Abstract
The future of design is not ready and finished. It is considering this scenario that this text discusses the emergence of theories of the imaginary as a reflexive path and operating system to consider the future of design. The central question part of the premise that a set of norms inhibited the emergence of creative-critical potential of design. In this sense, instances such as the imagination and the imaginary, while deeper structures that give ballast to social extract, were suppressed by taking them little by little the ability to generate knowledge and credible knowledge. Using, metaphorically, of formal and material imaginaries material (Bachelard, 1998). And heroic, mystical and synthetic structures (Durand,1997), we take a reading of concepts drawn from the field of design, while at the same time we try to indicate contributions which, for the present and for the future, take the social ballast as points of departure and arrival., Nos últimos tempos políticos, ativistas ambientais, jornalistas e outros líderes de opinião direcionaram suas armas contra os plásticos.
