Politically, Finland in the only European Union country bordering Russia, thus making it a key player in East-West relations. Recovering from a debilitating recession, Finland is quickly making its mark in Europe as a strong industrial nation. Industrial growth usually puts a strain on the environment, but with over 70% of its land covered in forests, Finland is making great efforts to conserve its forests and clean up its lakes.
