Objective To predict depressive symptom severity and presence of major depression along the full alcohol use continuum. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Ambulatory practices and general hospitals from three sites in Germany. Participants Consecutive patients aged 18–64 years were proactively approached for an anonymous health screening (participation rate=87%, N=12 828). Four continuous alcohol use measures were derived from an expanded Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT): alcohol consumption in grams per day and occasion, excessive consumption in days per months and the AUDIT sum score. Depressive symptoms were assessed for the worst 2-week period in the last 12 months using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-8). Negative binomial and logistic regression analyses were used to predict depressive symptom severity (PHQ-8 sum score) and presence of major depression (PHQ-8 sum score≥10) by the alcohol use measures. "Gleichstellungspolitik und Geschlechterforschung zusammenzubringen war erklärtes Ziel der Tagung 'Frau - Macht - Konkurrenz' vom 11. bis 13. März in der Evangelischen Akademie Tutzing. Dem Organisationsteam, dem kürzlich gegründeten Netzwerk für Genderforschung in Bayern, gelang es, eine offene, partizipative Atmosphäre und dadurch Räume für Vernetzung zu schaffen, was auch weithin genutzt wurde. Zudem überzeugte die methodische wie thematische Breite der Vorträge. Angenehm vielfältig waren auch die Perspektiven auf die einzelnen Themenfelder (z.B. Empowerment, Institutionalisierung, Feminismus im Rahmen allgemeiner Herrschaftsverhältnisse), von stark aus der alltäglichen Gleichstellungsarbeit geprägten Erfahrungen bis hin zu akademischem Duktus. Nichtsdestotrotz blieben entscheidende Diskussions- und Konfliktlinien ausgeklammert." (Autorenreferat) "Bringing experts in Gender Equality Politics and Gender Research together was the declared aim of the conference 'Woman - Power - Competition' held at the Protestant Academy in Tutzing from 11 to 13 March 2011. The organising team, the recently founded Netzwerk für Genderforschung in Bayern (Network for Gender Research in Bavaria), managed to create an open and participatory atmosphere with lots of opportunities for networking that participants enthusiastically seized upon. Moreover, the thematic as well as methodological range of the lectures and workshops was on the whole convincing. The perspectives on individual issues (e.g. empowerment, institutionalisation, feminism in the context of general power relations) were pleasingly diverse, ranging from experience marked very strongly by everyday gender practice to a highly academic style. Nevertheless, key lines of discussion and conflict were ignored." (author's abstract)
