2. Effects of Rotational Symmetry Breaking in Polymer-coated Nanopores

Abstract

The statistical theory of polymers tethered around the inner surface of a cylindrical channel has traditionally employed the assumption that the equilibrium density of the polymers is independent of the azimuthal coordinate. However, simulations have shown that this rotational symmetry can be broken when there are attractive interactions between the polymers. We investigate the phases that emerge in these circumstances, and we quantify the effect of the symmetry assumption on the phase behavior of the system. In the absence of this assumption, one can observe large differences in the equilibrium densities between the rotationally symmetric case and the non-rotationally symmetric case. A simple analytical model is developed that illustrates the driving thermodynamic forces responsible for this symmetry breaking. Our results have implications for the current understanding of the polymer behavior in cylindrical nanopores.

Abstract

The International Design Study for the Neutrino Factory (the IDS-NF) was established by the community at the ninth "International Workshop on Neutrino Factories, super-beams, and beta- beams" which was held in Okayama in August 2007. The IDS-NF mandate is to deliver the Reference Design Report (RDR) for the facility on the timescale of 2012/13. In addition, the mandate for the study [3] requires an Interim Design Report to be delivered midway through the project as a step on the way to the RDR. This document, the IDR, has two functions: it marks the point in the IDS-NF at which the emphasis turns to the engineering studies required to deliver the RDR and it documents baseline concepts for the accelerator complex, the neutrino detectors, and the instrumentation systems. The IDS-NF is, in essence, a site-independent study. Example sites, CERN, FNAL, and RAL, have been identified to allow site-specific issues to be addressed in the cost analysis that will be presented in the RDR. The choice of example sites should not be interpreted as implying a preferred choice of site for the facility.

Abstract

We have performed inelastic neutron scattering on the near ideal spin-ladder compound La4Sr10Cu24O41, which will serve as a model system for the investigation of doped ladders. A key feature in the analysis was the separation of one-triplon and two-triplon scattering contributions due to an antiphase rung modulation. This enabled extraction of the one-triplon dispersion which has a spin gap of 26.4+/-0.3 meV, and for the first time two-triplon scattering is clearly observed. The exchange constants are determined by fitting the data to be Jleg=186 meV and Jrung=124 meV along the leg and the rung respectively. In addition to the surprisingly large difference between Jleg and Jrung a substantial ring exchange of Jcyc=31 meV was confirmed., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Neutron radiography in many cases is the only non-destructive technique available for the analysis of a wide range of samples from metallurgy, materials engineering and materials testing. In this paper the potential of the technique is illustrated for a transient liquid phase (TLP) joint. TLP bonding produces interface free and stress free joints. The quality and properties of the joint depend on the diffusion of an interlayer into the base material. A TLP joint is visualised and the diffusion profile of the boron contained in the bonding additives is determined. Parameters of the bonding process are determined quantitatively from this profile, and flaws in the joint are detected., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

We have studied the effect of Lu substitution on the spin dynamics of the Kondo insulator YbB12 to clarify the origin of the spin-gap response previously observed at low temperature in this material. Inelastic neutron spectra have been measured in Yb1-xLuxB12 compounds for four Lu concentrations x = 0, 0.25, 0.90 and 1.0. The data indicate that the disruption of coherence on the Yb sublattice primarily affects the narrow peak structure occurring near 15-20 meV in pure YbB12, whereas the spin gap and the broad magnetic signal around 38 meV remain almost unaffected. It is inferred that the latter features reflect mainly local, single-site processes, and may be reminiscent of the inelastic magnetic response reported for mixed-valence intermetallic compounds. On the other hand, the lower component at 15 meV is most likely due to dynamic short-range magnetic correlations. The crystal-field splitting in YbB12 estimated from the Er3+ transitions measured in a Yb0.9Er0.1B12 sample, has the same order of magnitude as other relevant energy scales of the system and is thus likely to play a role in the form of the magnetic spectral response., Comment: 16 pages in pdf format, 9 figures. v. 2: coauthor list updated; extra details given in section 3.2 (pp. 6-7); one reference added; fig. 5 axis label changed

Abstract

Neutron spectroscopic measurements of the magnetic excitations in PrO$_2$ reveal (1) sharp peaks characteristic of transitions between levels of the $4f^1$ configuration of Pr$^{4+}$ split by the cubic crystal field, and (2) broad bands of scattering centred near 30 meV and 160 meV. We present a simple model based on a vibronic Hamiltonian that accounts for the main features of the data. The analysis shows that $90\pm10$% of the Pr ions have a localized $4f^1$ configuration and provides strong evidence for a dynamic Jahn-Teller effect in the $\Gamma_8$ electronic ground state., Comment: To be published in Phys. 8. Disappearance of the Spin Gap in a Zn doped 2-Leg Ladder Compound Sr(Cu1-xZnx)2O3

Abstract

An inelastic neutron scattering study was performed on a Zn-substituted spin-1/2 Heisenberg 2-leg ladder compound Sr(Cu1-xZnx)2O3 (x < 0.04) to investigate nonmagnetic impurity effects on the quantum spin system with a large spin gap of about 400 K. The magnitude of the spin gap was found to be independent of Zn concentration, 33 meV, while the integrated magnetic scattering which corresponds to the singlet-triplet excitation decreased monotonically with increasing x. On account of the total-sum rule, this result supports the existence of a finite in-gap density of states at E = 0 which was suggested from the T-linear magnetic specific heat., Comment: RevTex, 9 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We present results from an inelastic neutron scattering experiment on the candidate Heisenberg spin ladder vanadyl pyrophosphate, (VO)2P2O7. We find evidence for a spin-wave excitation gap of $E_{gap} = 3.7\pm 0.2$ meV, at a band minimum near $Q=0.8 A^{-1}$. Abstract

Growing numbers of voters across the country are demanding that governments, both state and federal, act decisively to ensure that more Australians have access to affordable, secure and suitable housing. While rising house prices benefit many, there is growing recognition that declining home ownership and a lack of suitable and affordable rental accommodation is bad for our community and, in the long run, bad for the economy.We are the first to acknowledge that housing markets are complex and that a long-term, coordinated approach involving all levels of government is required to address the housing crisis. However, this does not mean the Tasmanian government can sit on its hands and wait for the Commonwealth or other states to act. We urge the next Tasmanian government to lead by example and introduce evidence-based reforms that are likely to deliver longer term results, while encouraging other Australian governments to follow by introducing complementary measures.This report outlines the three areas of reform we believe are needed to improve housing outcomes in Tasmania: a phased-in overhaul of property taxation; planning and other regulatory reform; and strategic government spending (incentives and infrastructure).Included in this report is a summary of the Tasmania-relevant findings from a year-long national research project on pathways to state and local housing tax reform, which we recently undertook for the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI). Our analysis is based on new and sophisticated modelling of the market values and sales of the 8,593,202 residential properties in CoreLogic’s national residential property database in 2016 (see the full report for detailed administrative and policy design recommendations).

Abstract

T lymphocytes are stimulated when they recognize short peptides bound to class I proteins of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) protein, as peptide–MHC complexes. Due to the diversity in T-cell receptor (TCR) molecules together with both the peptides and MHC proteins they bind to, it has been difficult to design vaccines and treatments based on these interactions. Machine learning has made some progress in trying to predict the immunogenicity of peptide sequences in the context of specific MHC class I alleles but, as such approaches cannot integrate temporal information and lack explanatory power, their scope will always be limited. Here, we advocate a mechanistic description of antigen presentation and TCR activation which is explanatory, predictive, and quantitative, drawing on modeling approaches that collectively span several length and time scales, being capable of furnishing reliable biological descriptions that are difficult for experimentalists to provide. It is a form of multiscale systems biology. We propose the use of chemical rate equations to describe the time evolution of the foreign and host proteins to explain how the original proteins end up being presented on the cell surface as peptide fragments, while we invoke molecular dynamics to describe the key binding processes on the molecular level, including those of peptide–MHC complexes with TCRs which lie at the heart of the immune response. On each level, complementary methods based on machine learning are available, and we discuss the relationship between these divergent approaches. The pursuit of predictive mechanistic modeling approaches requires experimentalists to adapt their work so as to acquire, store, and expose data that can be used to verify and validate such models.

We studied the magnetic excitations from the S=1/2 two-leg ladders in La[sub 6]Ca[sub 8]Cu[sub 24]O[sub 41]. In order to understand the full dispersion of the magnon branch for the lowest triplet excitation, effects of the four-spin and the next-nearest-neighbor (diagonal) exchange interactions are analyzed. Abstract

Low-temperature specific heat measurements on NdNiO[sub 3] evidence the onset of Nd cooperative ordering at T[sub N2]=0.77 K. Because of the particular arrangement of the Ni magnetic moments, half of the Nd ions have an antiferromagnetically compensated environment while the other half have a noncompensated one. We show that both types of Nd ions are affected by a different but non-negligible Nd–Ni exchange field, in contrast with the current model used in literature.© 2000 American Institute of Physics. This document, the IDR, has two functions: it marks the point in the IDS-NF at which the emphasis turns to the engineering studies required to deliver the RDR and it documents baseline concepts for the accelerator complex, the neutrino detectors, and the instrumentation systems. The IDS-NF is, in essence, a site-independent study. Example sites, CERN, FNAL, and RAL, have been identified to allow site-specific issues to be addressed in the cost analysis that will be presented in the RDR. The choice of example sites should not be interpreted as implying a preferred choice of site for the facility.

39. Disaster resilience and local adaptation capacity in coastal Queensland

Abstract

The 2011 floods illustrated once again Queensland’s vulnerability to flooding and similar disasters. Climate change will increase the frequency and magnitude of such events and will have a variety of other impacts. To deal with these impacts governments at all levels need to be prepared and work together. Like the rest of the nation most of the population of the state is located in the coastal areas and these areas are more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. This paper examines climate change adaptation efforts in coastal Queensland. The aim is increasing local disaster resilience of people and property through fostering coordination between local and state government planning activities in coastal high hazard areas. By increasing the ability of local governments and state agencies to coordinate planning activities, we can help adapt to impacts of climate change. Towards that end, we will look at the ways that these groups currently interact, especially with regard to issues involving uncertainty related to climate change impacts. Through an examination of climate change related activities by Queensland’s coastal local governments and state level planning agencies and how they coordinate their planning activities at different levels we aim to identify the weaknesses of the current planning system in responding to the challenges of climate change adaptation and opportunities for improving the ways we plan and coordinate planning, and make recommendations to improve resilience in advance of disasters so as to help speed up recovery when they occur.

Abstract

We report measurements of the temperature dependence of the sound attenuation and the fractional change in sound velocity for the glass (G) and orientational-glass (OG) phases of polymorphic ethanol. Strikingly similar behaviors are found for both phases despite the OG's underlying crystal (bcc) lattice. Such similarity, which is also revealed in dielectric spectroscopy and inelastic neutron scattering measurements, suggests whole molecule small-angle librations as a common microscopic origin for a wide variety of "glassy" phenomena.

Abstract

The magnitude and sign of the effective magnetic splitting factor g* for conduction electrons in GaAs/AlxGa(1-x)As quantum wells have been determined as a function of well width down to 5 nm. The experimental method is based on combined measurements of the decay time of photoluminescence and of the suppression of its circular polarization under polarized optical pumping in a magnetic field perpendicular to the growth axis (Hanle effect). Measurements as a function of hole sheet density in the wells reveal a transition from excitonic behavior with very small apparent g value for low density, to larger absolute values characteristic of free electrons at higher densities. For 20-nm wells g* for electrons is close to the bulk value (-0.44), and increases for narrower wells passing through zero for well width close to 5.5 nm. A theoretical analysis based on three-band k.p theory, including allowance for conduction-band nonparabolicity and for wave-function penetration into the barriers, gives a reasonable representation of the data, leading to the conclusion that g* in quantum wells has a value close to that of electrons in the bulk at the confinement energy above the band minimum.
